WindowTintingThereisanadditionalchargetocheckavehiclewithtintedwindows.Allwindowswith
applicationsofafterfactorywindowtintingmustbecheckedduringthesafetyinspection.(See
exceptionsbelow)
Windowsmaynotbeanydarkerthan35%visiblelighttransmission.Thisstandardisconsidered
tobemetifthewindowtintisnolowerthan32%visiblelighttransmissionwhenmeasuredby
thestationwithaphotometer.
Windshieldtintingisallowed,howeverthecombinationofthefactorytintandtheaftermarket
tintcannothavealighttransmittanceoflessthan32%.Thetintonthewindshieldcannot
extendmorethanfiveinchesbelowthetopofthewindshieldorbelowtheAS1lineofthe
windshield,whicheverislonger.
Thewindowtintingrestrictionsapplywithoutexceptiontothewindshieldofthevehicle.
However,theydonotapplytoanyotherwindowofthefollowingvehicletypes:
Awindowofanexcursionpassengervehicle,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(27)a.
Awindowofaforhirepassengervehicle,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(27)b.
Awindowofacommoncarrierofpassengers,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(27)c.
Awindowofamotorhome,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(27)d2.
Awindowofanambulance,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(27)f.
Therearwindowofapropertyhaulingvehicle,asdefinedinG.S.204.01(31).
Awindowofalimousine. Awindowofalawenforcementvehicle.
Awindowofamultipurposevehiclethatisbehindthedriverofthevehicle.A
multipurposevehicleisapassengervehiclethatisdesignedtocarry10orfewer
passengersandeitherisconstructedonatruckchassisorhasspecialfeaturesdesigned
foroccasionaloffroadoperation.Aminivanandapickuptruckaremultipurposevehicles.
AwindowofavehicleforwhichDMVhasissuedamedicalexceptionpermit.MedicalExceptions
Apersonwhosuffersfromamedicalconditionthatcausesthepersontobephotosensitiveto
visiblelightmayobtainamedicalexceptionpermit.Toobtainapermit,anapplicantshallapply
inwritingtotheDriversMedicalEvaluationProgramandhavehisorherdoctorcompletethe
requiredmedicalevaluationformprovidedbyDMV.Thepermitshallbevalidforfiveyears
fromthedateofissue,unlesstheDriversMedicalEvaluationProgramdirectsashortertime.Therenewalshallrequireamedicalrecertificationthatthepersoncontinuestosufferfroma
medicalconditionrequiringwindowtinting.
Apersonmayreceivenomorethantwomedicalexceptionpermitsthatarevalidatanyone
time.Apermitissuedunderthissubsectionshallspecifythevehicletowhichitapplies,the
windowsthatmaybetinted,andthepermittedlevelsoftinting.Thepermitshallbecarriedin

thevehicletowhichitapplieswhenthevehicleisdrivenonahighway.DMVshallgiveaperson
whoreceivedamedicalexceptionpermitastickertoplaceonthelowerlefthandcornerofthe
rearwindowofthevehicletowhichitapplies.Thestickershallbedesignedtogiveprospective
purchasersofthevehiclenoticethatthewindowsofthevehicledonotmeettherequirements
ofG.S.20127(b),andshallbeplacedbetweenthewindowandthetintingwhenthetintingis
installed.DMV
shall
adopt
rules
regarding
the
specifications
of
the
medical
exception
sticker.
Failuretodisplaythestickerisaninfractionpunishablebyatwohundreddollar($200)fine.
