2014 SEASON / 1

WELCoME to the SEVENTH SEASoN of INSIGHT THEATRE!Our opening production of Oliver! is sure to lead us into a stunning summer of live theatre to entertain and inspire. The cast of Oliver! features wonderful professional actor-singers led by Alan Knoll and Broadway’s Spencer Davis Milford who promise us a delightful production filled

with great voices and orchestration. “Consider Yourself At Home!” is the theme of our season and is one of the fine songs from this great musical.

Our July production of Over the River and Through the Woods continues that exuberance with a wonderful comedy about family. Set in New Jersey, this Italian family schemes to keep their grandson close to them. The play is humorous as well as thought provoking. I really giggled when I read the script and also found myself moved to tears, too.

In August, we present The Spitfire Grill, a folk, bluegrass, pop-style musical with a poignant and exciting score. This intimate show is about redemption and the real possibility for renewal of the spirit. The tuneful duet “Colors of Paradise” is sung with lots of warmth in this story about mending broken hearts.

Our final selection is one that many of our audience members voted for last season. Death of a Salesman, a dramatic modern tragedy, is an American classic. This award-winning play offers moments for reflection and reveals the challenges of living in our American dream-driven world. Willie Loman’s struggle evokes empathy, yet also asks the question: Why? What are the causes, both psychological and experiential, that bring his downfall? When Linda, his wife, states at the end “Willie, we’re free and clear!” does the awareness of the fragility of the human spirit inspire determination to find better paths for generations to follow? What is the “American Dream” anyway? I hope to share in discussions of this great play with you. Once again, the cast is outstanding, and I am so proud to have such great talent on our stage.

I look forward to seeing you in our lobby after the shows this season. Please let me know if you have comments about our productions or questions about our choices. We so appreciate your thoughtful comments and invite your active participation.

OLIVER! DIRECTOR’S NOTESIt’s hard to think of a musical more suited to the current moment than Oliver!

First of all, the show is about the excesses of a free market and the ways that can corrupt people. Mr. Bumble, the corpulent headmaster of an orphanage, sells off Oliver Twist, one of the kids in his care, because the little guy annoys Bumble by saying that he’s hungry. An undertaker and his wife, who can only be described as morbid (sorry!) entrepreneurs, buy the kid. A den of thieves profits from the

spoils of the industrial revolution by picking the pockets of the wealthier classes, and these thieves are presided over by a venal, gold-hoarding criminal named Fagin who takes financial advantage of his boys while pretending to take care of them.

Wow — it does sometimes feel like everything old is new again!

That said, Oliver! is a musical with a tremendous heart, and that is why I find it so very appealing. At its core Oliver! is a David-and-Goliath story. Oliver represents David, and Goliath is represented by Bill Sykes and the social injustices of the time.

I remember first seeing Oliver! when I was a very young child. I was totally taken with it, and I found it both exhilarating and a bit scary at the same time. While working on this production, my reaction is much the same. I still cheer for Oliver and Fagin’s gang of boys. I still wonder why Nancy, who has a heart of gold, allows her life to be directed so by Bill Sykes. And I continue to marvel at the character of Fagin, who seems content, though his circumstances are beyond his control.

In the end, Oliver’s journey is that of a little boy who survives with amazing virtue and goodness — and along the way, reminds others of their own virtue and goodness. Enjoy! — Edward M. Coffield

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS DIRECTOR’S NOTES“Tengo Famiglia.” If you just said that in English, it would be “I support a family.” But in Italian, it means more, much more — “I am a man; I am doing well for my woman and my children; I have a reason for being alive.” These words uttered by Frank Gianelli in the opening scene of this play are not only words of advice for his grandson Nick, but to all of us hearing him. In our busy world of work, business, politics and socializing, we tend to forget, or at

least overlook, that which is most important in our lives, our number one priority, our true goal for happiness — family! Having grown up in a very Italian family myself, I was brought up to believe in the three “Fs” of life, as Nick says: family, faith and food ... in that order. However, I don’t believe the Italians have the monopoly on this belief. All families of all races, faiths and nationalities share this way of life. All of mankind has been striving for this way of life ever since we crawled out of the cave. But even though we continue to strive, we sometimes fall off the path and forget the truth. Hopefully, viewing this charming and endearing play by Joe DiPietro we will gently be guided back on the right path. “Tengo Famiglia” — John Contini

THE SPITfIRE GRILL

THE SPITFIRE GRILL DIRECTOR’S NOTESDirecting this intimate powerhouse featuring such an outstanding cast is a special reward. I always look for shows that offer moving stories and well developed characters. The characters in Spitfire are psychologically fascinating, the story relevant and surprisingly poignant, and the folk-style music has an irresistible charm. “Colors of Paradise,” “Digging Stone” and a tuneful rendition of “Shoot The Moon” are some of my favorites.

The musical is based on a 1998 film. As an Off Broadway musical, it won the 2001 Richard Rogers Musical Award and since then has been performed across the nation at many regional theatres to rave reviews.

The setting of the story is rural Wisconsin a few years ago, and the themes deal with forgiveness and redemption. The wonderful joy that closes the play makes my heart pound! I am hoping it is as infectious for you — and that you enjoy pondering the surprises along the way.

The New York Times called Spitfire “a soul-satisfying … compelling story … it is freeing … penetrated by honesty and it ‘glows!’” And USA Today said: “It has an abundance of warmth, spirit and goodwill.”

I really love the show; it represents all that Insight Theatre was founded on — thought-provoking entertainment that inspires and moves the audience with an emphasis on the power of the human spirit. I am so eager to share it with you. — Maggie Ryan

THE TIMEThe late 1940s

THERE WILL BE ONE FIFTEEN-MINUTE INTERMISSION.

DEATH of A SALESMAN

DEATH OF A SALESMAN DIRECTOR’S NOTESThe year of 1949 was a good year for Arthur Miller. Death of a Salesman, one of Miller’s most famous works, received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. In February that year, Salesman was produced and premiered on Broadway — running for 742 performances. Since then, it has been revived on Broadway four times, winning three more Tony Awards for Best Revival.

As for the rest of America, World War II had ended in 1945. While some were lucky to embark on economic prosperity, unskilled laborers (gas attendants, migrant workers, sales clerks) were kept from making a profit — much of this due to government policies that benefitted larger, corporate farmers and businesses. Happy, a sales clerk, and Biff, a farm worker, were two characters Miller chose to represent this segment of the American workforce.

The struggles both Happy and Biff experience are examples of “blue collar workers” keeping afloat their dignity at lowly positions within a largely affluent society. Most importantly, Miller uses the example of the Loman family to reveal that most ordinary people are unable to achieve the “American Dream,” no matter how much they believe in it.

For Arthur Miller, Salesman is not just a play about a man needing to let go of unrealistic dreams; it is a play arguing that materialism has taken the place of the great ideals originally founded on American soil. — Wayne Loui

musical theatre at San Diego State University this fall. He is happy to be making his Insight debut with Oliver!

DANIEL BLACKWELL (Noah Claypole) is a recent graduate of Saint Louis University’s theatre program. His recent acting credits include Three Sisters, Radium Girls and Much Ado About Nothing at SLU and an appearance as an extra in The Foreigner at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. His credits as a dialect coach include Cabaret at Stray Dog Theatre and Good People at Washington University. Thank you to Edward for the opportunity, Nancy Bell for all her guidance, and to Mom and Dad for all of their support. www.danielthomasblackwell.com.

ALEx M. BOLLINI (Ensemble) is excited to be part of Insight’s cast of Oliver! Alex was most recently seen in the fifth grade production of Annie at Tillman Elementary School, where he played the role of Drake the butler. Alex would like to thank his piano and voice teacher, Taylor Pietz, for her instruction and encouragement. In his spare time he loves to draw, play basketball and hang out with his friends.

MARA BOLLINI (Old Sally) holds a BA in communications/journalism from Truman State University, a BSN from Saint Louis University as well as an MHA from Webster University. She has appeared in St. Louis theatrical productions for more than 20 years. Past production highlights include Les Misérables (Madame Thenardier), The Wild Party (Delores), Nunsense (Sister Robert Anne), Jesus Christ Superstar (Mary Magdalene), Chicago (June), Company (Susan), Grease (Rizzo/ChaCha), Godspell (Self), Damn Yankees (Sister) and ensemble roles in Sweeney Todd, Hair and Anything Goes. Mara is grateful to Edward Coffield and Maggie Ryan for this opportunity to work with them and the talents of Insight. In addition, Mara is beyond excited to share the stage for the first time with her son Alex. Much love to him, Dan and all of her family for their support and encouragement.

MICHAEL BRIGHTMAN (Mr. Sowerberry/The Visitor) is very pleased to return for his third production at Insight, having previously appeared in last season’s productions of 1776 and Our Town. other St. Louis credits include The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Mustard Seed, New Line, Stray Dog, St. Louis Shakespeare and many others. favorite roles include Peron in Evita, Lord Are in Restoration for St. Louis Shakespeare (Judy award for his performance),

Higgins in My Fair Lady (four productions!), Quioxte in Man of La Mancha (three productions!) and Billy flynn in New Line’s highly acclaimed production of Chicago. Michael was last seen in Stray Dog’s smash hit production of Cabaret as Ernst, the bad guy. Seems Michael plays a lot of bad guys lately. Typecasting to be sure!

JASON CONTINI (Happy Loman) is thrilled to be making his debut with Insight. Jason has been seen in more than 75 productions across the midwest. He has worked with The Muny, Stages, St. Louis opera, The Imaginary Theatre Company, Avalon Theatre Company, okoboji Summer Theatre and Dramatic License, to name a few. His favorite roles include: Godspell (Jesus), Hamlet (Laertes), Bah! Hambug! (Bob Cratchit), Little Bosnia (faris) and Macbeth (Macbeth). Another favorite role was as Chris in All My Sons, a production Jason did with his father John more than 15 years ago, and this marks the first time since that production that John and Jason have been on stage together. Jason has also starred in over a dozen feature films including the acclaimed indie vampire film Shadowland (Pirate Pictures) as vampire hunter Julian and the war film Khyber, which he also co-produced. Most recently, Jason wrapped production on the new St. Louis-based indie drama Four Color Eulogy, which he co-produced, co-wrote and starred. In addition to theatre and film, he is also a comic book artist and publishes two comics: Legacies End and Super Cat. Sean, we love and miss you.
