to move to Salemtowne later this
summer and have generously donated
many books from their outstanding
personal library to the church library. These include reference

some time to catalog these into our collection, but the library
will then be a much more effective study resource. Watch this

Youthful Information . . . . . Hello July! It’s hard to believe we are well into the summer months already, and Independence Day is right around the
corner! The Youth are continuing to meet on Wednesday nights along with the rest of the congregation for food, fellow-
ship, and fun! In addition, we have started our Summer Sunday Movie Nights, which are at 6pm on Sunday evenings and
include a movie with discussion to follow. These will continue through the end of the summer and the start of the school
year – please see the calendar for a list of movies! Finally, the Youth had a successful car wash fundraiser on June 14th,
raising enough money to send everyone on the mission trip free of charge! Thank you all who so generously donated! The
mission trip will be at Christmount Work Camp from July 13th through the 18th, where we will help make the camp a better
and more affordable place for underprivileged children and specially-abled adults. If you would like any additional infor-
mation on any of the above events, or if you are not on the Youth email list and would like to be, please email Chris Rinker
at [email protected]. . . . . . . . . From the desk of Chris Rinker.

Grace and Peace to You All!
I am composing my article after a long return journey from my grandmother’s funeral in Texas. It was a beautiful service,
very much in keeping with the beautiful, optimistic, and compassionate woman she was. Many of you have expressed your
good wishes, prayers and condolences and my family and I thank you very much for them and hope you continue to keep us
all in your prayers in the weeks ahead. Some of my favorite memories with Grandma involve sitting in church with her (My
mother sang in the choir and did not want me to be unsupervised as a youngster.) and asking her questions about the sermon
and singing along with her as we both held the hymnal together. The celebration of her life is a reminder to me that faith is
not just something that is taught in a Sunday school class or a youth group or even a worship service. Faith is also “caught”
by being in relationship with others; with parents and grandparents talking to children and grandchildren about what Christ
has meant and still means to them outside of the four walls of the church. Faith is caught when we all are about doing the
work of the church. Faith is caught as we engage in the work Christ has called us to do. Faith is caught when we love God
with all our heart, soul, and mind and love our neighbor as ourselves. I caught my faith from many people, but most espe-
cially my grandma.
My grandmother’s passing also happened around two national events of historical proportions; the shooting of and mourn-
ing for the 9 parishioners at Emmanuel AME church in Charleston and the Supreme Court’s landmark decision granting mar-
riage equality to all Americans, including American citizens who identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans-
gender. I spoke about the tragedy in Charleston in my sermon before this past Sunday, but have not had a chance to offer
some words about the court’s decision. I know that many of us have varying opinions about this issue. For some of us it is a
moment of great joy and relief while for some it is a deeply troubling occurrence, which challenges the very nature of the
authority of scripture.
Naturally, as God’s people who desire to be in relationship with God’s world, we all will converse and pray about this
new reality as we live into God’s future. But if there is anything I love about being a Disciple of Christ, it is that regardless of
how we approach the issue of marriage equality and other issues individually, there is nothing we prize more highly or strive
for more fervently than to be what our masthead reads; “a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.”
See you in church. Ryan
P.S. I heard, in my absence, that Elaine preached a very wonderful word this past Sunday as well as led you all in worship
quite ably. Thank you Elaine and to all those who make things happen around here (which, by the way is everybody!).
See you all in church,
Ryan
Palooza Headlines…. Friends,
Summer camp here at Creative Palooza is in full swing! The first week of July will be our fourth full week! Our program
continues to thrive with children from our afterschool program as well as children that continue to join us in the summer year
after year. As always, our program has room to grow- and that’s where we need your help! Please keep us in mind when
talking to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Our best advertisement is YOU- our church members & friends.
We’d like to thank the following individuals for their hard work & dedication in getting our facility ready for summer
camp: Dan & Patsy Traylor, Mike & Kathy Sink, Gary & Sandy Bosch, Judy Gillespie, Tim Brown, Janice Taylor, & Elaine
Pruitt. Your help is greatly appreciated! We couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you for your continued support of Creative Palooza! . . . . . .FROM THE DESK OF SUE HALFORD
