Dear Parents and Caregivers, This week our College community celebrated the Feast of the Assumption and our 134th birthday. The Feast of the Assumption has always been an important day for the Christian Brothers. Blessed Edmund Rice devoted his prayers towards Mary and prayed before a picture of the Assumption. The congregation was proclaimed on this feast day; Br Ambrose Treacy and three other brothers left Ireland for Australia on the Feast of the Assumption in 1868 and the foundation stone at Christian Brothers College was laid also on this feast day. While the when and the how of Mary’s assumption are utterly a mystery, there is no doubt that the reason for her assumption is ultimately a matter of love, God’s gracious love in response to Mary’s faithfulness. In Mary we see an ordinary woman who becomes extraordinary by virtue of her faith in what God makes possible in her life. Mary not only listened to God’s word and heard it, but she allowed the Word to take flesh in her life. For the Christian Brothers, Mary’s life depicts her unconditional love for her God and all of humanity. This feast is an opportunity to celebrate the heavenly rewards of such a loving discipleship and to be inspired at how humanity can be raised to such glorious heights simply because of love! 134th Birthday Celebrations Christian Brothers College celebrated its 134th birthday on Wednesday. The Assumption Mass was celebrated by Fr Kevin Hennessy cp, who has been associated with the college for many years. The mass was a wonderful celebration of Mary’s courage, wisdom, compassion and faith; she was totally committed to God‘s plan and reminded us as a College community that we need to be open to God’s love in our everyday life. Thank you to Mr Bruce Were, Sr Kanistal and Mr Rory Harris who prepared the mass and Mrs Guthleben, Ms Felicity Davies and Ms Emma Woehle for the liturgical music. Ms Emma Woehle sang a beautiful solo of the “Ave Maria” after communion. The rest of the day was dedicated to our carnival activities. Many thanks to each House that provided activities and food stalls throughout the afternoon. The staff versus students basketball game again proved that the staff need to keep practising their skills, being defeated by the students 20-60. Our annual netball game with Saint Mary’s College saw the college maintain the “Birthday Cup” for the fourth time with a close contest with CBC defeating SMC 28:23. Congratulations to Ms Krystle Helps for her outstanding coaching. Br Ernest Gregory Smith Science Week It was appropriate in our birthday week that the college had the inaugural Br Ernest Gregory Smith Science Week. Br Smith was at the college for eleven years and was widely known and respected in South Australia for his science teaching. The week provided for students in both the junior and senior campuses an opportunity to engage in practical experiments, undertake science excursions and listen to guest speakers. These included speakers from the Adelaide University Geo-Science department, Australian Science Teachers Association and chemical engineers. Thank you to the science coordinator Mr Michael Lucas and the science faculty who organised the many activities throughout the week to expand our students’ curiosity in science and associated career pathways. Friends of Music AGM The Friends of Music Committee had their AGM this week. Dear Parents and Caregivers,

2 INSIGHT

Absenteeism and LatenessIt is important that parents make every effort to ensure that their son attends school regularly and on time. We have observed that some students’ names are appearing regularly on absentee and late lists.

EREA Deputies ConferenceThis week I was fortunate to attend the EREA Deputies Conference in Melbourne. The guest speaker was the Hon John Anderson AO. John Anderson served as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia from 1999 to 2005. He was acting Prime Minister during the week of September 11, 2001 when Ansett collapsed and the attack on the world trade centre took place. John spoke passionately at the conference on the importance of a values-based education and where decisions made are not based on egocentric economic models but are more moralistic, where the rights of all people are considered and those inherent values of respect and dignity are maintained in our society. He challenged us as educators to maintain our core values and beliefs to ensure our students are not influenced by the world they enter post-school which is often about individual wants and satisfaction.

CBC vs Blackfriars IntercolThe CBC versus Blackfriars Intercol continues this week. The main games will be played this Saturday. The program has been revised since last week. These include:

• Year 8/9C Basketball 8.30am CBC Gym

Police BandThe Police Band visited the college this week. Their message to the students was on cyber-safety through their music.

Congratulations• Congratulations to our Rugby 7s team who

competed last Friday wining all three matches.

• Aleck Zwolski has been selected by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange for a student exchange program to Spain from October 2012 until January 2013.

• Last week I also received an email from Gemma Paech, a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Sleep Research, University of South Australia. She sent the following email related to our Year 12 Psychology students who visited the Sleep Research Centre with their teacher Dr Lynne Grbin:

“I just wanted to say that we were all really impressed with your students yesterday afternoon. We have had other school groups in the past and your students were one of the best groups we’ve ever had.”

I am continually impressed with the attitude and behaviour of our students and their pride in our college.

St Vincent De Paul Winter AppealOur college has recently supported the Saint Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Mr Hilary Flynn, Christian Values Coordinator, organised donations of clothing, non-perishable food and money for the appeal. The Winter Appeal has concluded with 8 cubic metres of clothing, 600+ cans of non-perishable food and $1380 which was presented to the Saint Vincent De Paul Society prior to the commencement of our mass on Wednesday. Thank you to all families who supported the appeal, in particular the Pfitzner family who contributed $500 to this amount.

MeetingsParents are reminded of the forthcoming meetings:

• The Parents and Friends AGM will occur on Tuesday, 21st August in the Board Room commencing at 7.00pm. All members of the community welcomed.

• Volunteer Induction Night for parent helpers or volunteers who missed the last induction evening has been organised for 21st August from 3.35 – 4.45pm in the Walsh Lecture Theatre.

Mary: A woman of InspirationThe Gospel used in our Feast of the Assumption Mass on Wednesday describes Mary’s visit to her cousin Elisabeth. They knew each other. They were related. But during the meeting, they discover in each other a mystery that they did not yet know and that fills them with great joy. As a College community how often does it happen that we meet people whom we know, but who surprise us by their wisdom and by their witness of the faith! It is thus that God reveals himself and allows us to know the mystery of his presence in our lives.

Luke 1: 39-56

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Double standardsWhen I make a mistake, treat another person badly, come late for an appointment or forget to call someone, I can rationalise and excuse myself: saying that: I was feeling off colour, the baby kept me awake all night, the other person deserved it, I just did not get time or someone delayed me. I can automatically name many justifiable excuses for myself. If Tom or Mary speaks sharply to me, forgets an appointment or omits to give me a message, I may judge them as being nasty, bad-tempered, thoughtless and unreliable. Double standards! If I do not check out the situation with Tom or Mary I may never know the real story and may even dwell on it so that it grows out of all proportion. “Peter went up to him and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother or sister if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times.’ (Matthew 18: 21,22) The father’s forgiveness of his Prodigal Son is another example for us. (Luke 15: 11-32) “Do not judge, and you will not be judged” (Matthew 7:1) Difficult as it is, we should try to apply the same standards to others as we do to ourselves.

It was a good experience to attend my first whole school assembly last Friday. It was a gathering which celebrated many important aspects of the school. I was delighted to see so many boys receive certificates for academic achievement and improvement from Semester 1. As well, I was pleased to present badges to all the boys who were elected to be SRC representatives for this semester. The other key presentations all emphasised important issues around giving to others. Hamish Richardson from Year 10 spoke passionately about supporting the 40 Hour famine. Mr Greg Ward followed up talking about his immersion in Africa, while the six House captains informed us about the Charities that their Houses are supporting.

I spoke in the absence of Mr Clarke who was at the Director’s day at the Catholic Education Office. After reminiscing about my memories of being here for the Centenary of the school and holding up some artefacts from that time, I asked each boy to think about the meaning and importance of the word “Respect”. Respect for self, meaning that you have a positive self image which in turn leads to being well-groomed and

well-dressed in Uniform; and then respect for others which builds up community. Finally I stressed respect for teachers which leads to harmonious relationships in class and hence better learning.

On Monday night I went to Blackfriars to attend the Intercol debates. I must say how delighted I am to see debating as part of the program. Both debates were highly entertaining. The middle school boys were contending that celebrities were not good role models, while the seniors were arguing that the Olympics should be abolished. We won the middle debate ensuring that the school name goes on the trophy for the first time. Blackfriars prevailed in the seniors so we will have more Olympics to follow. Well done to all the boys who conquered their nerves and spoke.

Finally I was very happy with the approach of all the boys at our birthday celebrations on Wednesday. Fr Kevin Hennessey led the mass to celebrate the feast of Assumption and CBC’s 134th birthday. After that our fair raised money for charity and a lot of fun was had. In particular the Shuffle dance competition went well as did the annual game of netball against St Mary’s. It was a good day to be at CBC.

Friday 10 August, 30 eager Christian Brothers College students and 5 teachers assembled on the corner of North Terrace and East Terrace at 7:30 am. The team was here to participate in Walk a mile in my boots, a one mile walk (1.6 kilometres) to raise money for the homeless people who visit the Hutt St Centre. This is one of the biggest community events in Adelaide with over 3,600 people participating in this year’s walk, a record for the walk. The group donated 10 dollars each to participate and at the end were greeted with an egg and bacon breakfast. It was great to see so many boys putting the college name out into the community and it is a true reflection of how the college encourages compassion from within each student. It shows that the students have that sense of community and compassion. It was funny to note throughout the walk the students strategically positioned themselves next to the St Mary’s college girls, in true CBC style whilst also some boys claimed they won the walk by crossing the finishing line first. One of the most overwhelming feelings on the walk was when the 3,600 strong force of people walked past the Hutt St centre. This was an extremely emotional part as many of the people who are homeless and will benefit from this fundraising were also emotional standing out the front of the centre as they witnessed such a magnificent public display of support for their situation and gave them hope that life is not all dark and there is people out there who care about them. I would also like to specially acknowledge the Pfitzner family for their donation of 500 dollars; this is a generous donation and is very much appreciated by the Hutt St Centre. Thank you to Mr Manton for taking photos of the event; we welcome and thank you for your support on such an occasion. This is the chosen charity for Bourke House and as a house and college we look forward to working closely with the centre in the future to help improve the lives of the disadvantaged in our community. With more planning and notice we hope to see another strong force of boys and their parents out there next year to continue to strive towards reducing the instances of homelessness in Adelaide. Also for anyone interested in being an ambassador next year or donating your time please contact the Hutt St Centre for any enquires.

Friends of Music AGM 14 AugustThe Friends of Music is a committee comprised of parents, music staff, students, and old collegians. The primary function is to promote music at CBC and in the wider community. In addition the committee engages in fundraising for the department.

During 2011-2012 some exciting changes have occurred. The FOM constitution has been ratified, members now include the music captain and vice-captains, and a captain’s board has been commissioned for the music room.

This week a change of officers occurred. President Mr Michael Richter, who has steered this committee since 2010, has handed over his baton to Mrs Susan Teakle. Treasurer for 2012-2013 is Mr Matt Squire and the new secretary is Ms Joanna Dalle Nogare.

The Friends of Music meet four times a year in the Board Room and the meetings are usually of one hour duration. The final meeting is a celebratory dinner. The FOM is under-represented with regard to JS parents. If you would like to join FOM please contact Ms Vivien London ([email protected]).

Flashback to the 50s, 60s and 70sOh, what a night! Demonstrations on how to “jive” and “rock and roll” by dancers from the VIP Latin American Dance Studio, a fleeting visit from the King himself, Elvis Presley, the St Mary’s Temptations that livened up the evening, a great array of people dressed in fabulous outfits -- you could not have asked for a better night’s entertainment.

A big congratulations to all the Year 8-12 music students who really got into the spirit of the night, a heartfelt thank you to the Friends of Music Committee for their work on the night and behind the scenes, kudos to Mr Roach for his organizational skills, and support of the performers, and a huge dose of admiration for our music captain, Harrison Visintin, and vice-captains, Marcus Barricelli and Jordan Lennon, who instigated this inaugural event.

6 INSIGHT

On Wednesday 15 August Christian Brothers College Adelaide celebrated its 134th Birthday. In 2012 over 1200 students and staff gathered to celebrate Mass and enjoy an afternoon of fun and activities. The foundation day of the College, 15 August 1878, was a very different scene. CBC consisted of a vacant block of land at the corner of Wakefield and what was then Ackland Street, with Ifould Street running behind. The width of the block extended to just past where the current Boardroom is located and the cost for the property was £3000.

The two Adelaide newspapers of the time, the Advertiser and the Register, give quite detailed accounts of the ceremony held on the day. Even though it was held on a week day when many people had to work there was a crowd of 300-400 present. As it was the feast of the Assumption, Mass was said with the Bishop and eleven other priests in attendance.

The crowd then processed to what is now the north-east corner of Food Tech where the Foundation Stone was

blessed and a time capsule buried underneath. The zinc box contained coins, papal medals, copies of the daily papers and a document written in Latin dedicating the College to Mary, the Mother of God. We believe the time capsule to be still located under the building.

Br Ernest Gregory SmithThis week the College celebrated our inaugural Br Ernest Gregory Smith Science Week. This festival of Science was named after Br Smith because although he taught at CBC for only eleven years, he was a particularly gifted teacher. Twenty-five percent of the boys he taught from one

particular year went on to get doctorates in science.

Br Smith was born in country Victoria on November 15th 1910, the youngest of seven children. When he was seven his family moved to Geelong and he attended the Christian Brothers School St Mary’s. At the age of sixteen he left for Sydney to join the Christian Brothers. In the 1930’s be began studying for a university science degree at the same time as he was working full time as

a teacher. His great interests were in literature, history, Latin and French so many of his friends were surprised when he chose to study science but he thought that the breadth of his interests brought a richness of understanding to science and help put it into the broader context of human endeavour.

He taught at many schools in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania and also at Rostrevor from 1943-46 and at CBC from 1957-68. He was the first science teacher to use the new labs which had just been built at CBC. In order to provide first class equipment for his students using the new labs Br Smith worked with some of the fathers to construct science apparatus. They built a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope and a Wilson Cloud Expansion Chamber-equipment that was rare at that time.

Br Smith also taught a Science Honours class for nine girls from Catholic girls schools in Adelaide. In those days few women studied science and few girls schools had appropriately trained staff to teach them. Br Smith had the knowledge and CBC had the facilities and so for the first time in our College history we had female students at Wakefield St. A number of those young ladies then went on to graduate in science at Adelaide University.

In 1963 Br Smith was awarded the Australian Industry Development Association Medal for his services to Science.

He died on April 10th 1999 aged 88.

Celebrating Book Week with Comic-ConThis year the Senior Campus library will be celebrating Book Week (August 20-24) with a Comic Convention. A comic convention, or Comic-Con as it is widely known, is an occasion where fans of comics gather to hold events, meet experts and famous personalities, to celebrate all things comics. This is all about having some fun with comics and promoting reading with another format.

The CBC Book Week Comic-Con program consists of a guest author, a movie at lunch time in the library, a competition to win one of the stand-up characters, and a comic stall at lunch time on Friday 24 August.

We have invited David Maher, a graphic novel author and illustrator to present to Middle School English classes, on Thursday 23 August, about the principles involved in writing and creating comics and graphic novels. The library will also be showing PG rated superhero programs at lunchtime to highlight the theme, kicking off with the original Batman TV show. If you are concerned about your son viewing a PG rated film, please let me know.

On Friday of Book Week the Adelaide Comics Centre will be setting up a stall in the library at lunch time to showcase comics, posters, and memorabilia for students to browse items and purchase if they wish. Also, we will be holding a competition asking the boys to write a short comic strip that involves a super hero and CBC. I look forward to reading some imaginative and creative comic strips! There will be excellent prizes on offer - it should be a fun week!

Learning ExcellenceOne of the very interesting aspects of my role at the College is the analysis of every student’s report following the completion of each round of reporting. The analysis focuses on two key aspects:

• The student’s application or effort in class

• The student’s academic result for each subject

At last week’s whole College assembly we recognised and celebrated the achievements of students who had achieved ‘Excellence in Learning’ during Semester 1 and students who had achieved ‘Learning Improvement’ from their Interim Report (end of Term 1) to their Semester Report (end of Term 2). We also applauded students undertaking Stage 2 subjects who achieved an interim result for their school assessment of ‘A+’.

BOOK WEEK 2012 ChAMPIONS READ!

Book Week is an annual event run by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. The date for Book Week 2012 will be Saturday 18 – Friday 24 August. Champions Read is the theme for book week in this special Year of Reading. Scan the QR code below to access

the Junior Campus Weebly (website) and then click on the Book Week link to see this year’s shortlisted books in the various categories.

Our book week celebrations began this week as several of the classes had Greg Holfeld, an Adelaide based illustrator, visit the Junior Campus. He spoke to the boys about his illustrations, the process of book making, cartoons, and graphic novels as a genre.

The remaining celebrations will take place in Week 6. The boys will be engaged in a number of activities to promote reading and this year’s shortlisted books.

We have taken the Champions Read theme and combined it with the recent Olympic Games. We will therefore compete in some reading challenges. Each class will be

required to complete 5 events. Each event will earn them a ring. They must collect 5 Book Week rings, to create their own “Olympic rings”.

The five reading events include:

• Completion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) by the entire class.

• Championing a cause, either We Give Books (http://www.wegivebooks.org/) or a charity of their own. Books are at the heart of the We Give Books program — books for reading and books for giving! Children are encouraged to read a book online. For every book they read, a donation of a book will be added to a variety of charities. I encourage you to look at this site with your children. I believe it is an easy way to promote a love of literacy with your family while helping those who do not have access to books.

• Participating in a variety of activities based on the Book Week shortlist.

• Challenging themselves with a reading marathon. During silent reading the class will attempt a ‘personal best’ in terms of reading silently without any interruptions.

• Joining our reading mob. Each class will join with their buddy class and the older boys will share a book with their younger buddy.

Following our reading mob on Tuesday 21 August we will be having a Feast for Champions. The Junior Campus community invites parents and friends to share this celebration. Specific details about this event will be sent directly to families in the Junior Campus.

This Friday signals the last day for the boys to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). Please ensure all sheets are handed to me so that I can upload the data to ensure all children receive their medals late in Term 4.

Congratulations to the following boys who have completed the PRC challenge:

0 Purple Antony A6 Purple Matthew K, Matthew P, Jayson W

Reading hourI would also like to encourage all families to be part of The Reading Hour which occurs on Saturday 25 August. The aim for The Reading Hour is sharing a book with your child for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week. There are many activities scheduled at bookstores and local libraries. I suggest a quiet cuddle sharing the joy of literature before bed or exploring the We Give Books website as mentioned above.

Keep reading and prepare for the celebrations of Book Week.

Dear Families and Friends

This Sunday’s Readings remind us that there are people everywhere who are sitting under their own broom trees, down in the mouth, feeling sorry for themselves and asking why they have been victimised. There is no shortage of people who have lost a spouse through death or divorce. There are countless others who have to contend with serious illness, or who are paralysed by addiction or deeply wounded from betrayal by friends or family. This story of Elijah is a reminder to them and to all of us that others have had similar experiences and that there is a way out of despair and loneliness and rejection.

Elijah came to a lone broom bush and collapsed in its shade, wanting in the worst way to be done with it all - to just die: “Enough of this, God! Take my life; I’m ready to join my ancestors in the grave!” Exhausted he fell asleep under the broom bush. Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, “Get up and eat!”...The angel of God shook him awake again and said: “Get up and eat some more, you’ve got a long journey ahead of you.” Nourished by the meal, he walked forty days and nights, all the way to Horeb, the mountain of God. When he got there, he crawled into a cave and fell asleep.

1 Kings 19, 4-8

God gives Elijah time to recover and sends him off to re-engage with life and its demands and challenges. God effectively says: “Now that you’ve gotten some nourishment into you, you can pull yourself together and get on with it!”

Elijah’s story is a pretty good paradigm for those of us who are hurting and discouraged, who have reached the end of our tether: take some time out, have a good meal and you might well find yourself ready to be invited back into life.

This week has been a particularly special one for our community to celebrate the birthday of Christian Brothers College and we give thanks for the wonderful legacy the Christian Brothers have left us and the important responsibility we are left with as we strive to encourage our students to be outstanding young men in the finest Edmund Rice tradition.

Have a good week.

Gospel Challenge: honouring MaryLuke 1: 39-56

Disciple of Love

While the when and the how of Mary’s assumption is utterly a mystery, there is no doubt that the reason for her assumption is ultimately a matter of love, God’s gracious love in response to Mary’s faithfulness. In Mary we see an ordinary woman who becomes extraordinary by virtue of her faith in what God makes possible in her life. Mary not only listened to God’s word and heard it, but she allowed the Word to take flesh in her life. In and through her feminine humanity she proclaims the greatness of God’s love for all humanity and in this sense is a disciple of God’s love. This feast is an opportunity to celebrate the heavenly rewards of such a loving discipleship and to be inspired at how lowly humanity can be raised to such glorious heights simply because of love!

As we remember the love of the mother of Jesus let us remember the love of own mothers, wives and sisters in our lives and be truly inspired to love them with all our heart.

• Uni Open Days

• Year 10 Careers counselling sessions

Uni & TAFE ApplicationsThe University and TAFE Application process is now open and students are urged to apply and pay $21 by the end of this term, to avoid paying a late fee or missing out on opportunities.

Although it can appear daunting initially, the process is simple, on-line and easy to use. Make sure the SATAC Reference Number is kept in a safe place when later responding to an offer.

University Booklets have been distributed during an Information session during Pastoral Care, but all TAFE information is now obtained from the TAFE website.

Students are encouraged to apply for both University and TAFE if they are unsure of their success at this stage. TAFE applications are free this year, and there are no tuition fees for Certificate 1 or Certificate 2 courses.

University Open DaysFlinders University is open on Saturday 18 August, while Adelaide University and UniSA are open on Sunday 19 August.

Students have received programs for each of the universities, and are encouraged to plan the sessions they want to attend (many are held more than once).

Year 10 Career Counselling SessionsAll Year 10 students will undergo a Careers Counselling session, as part of their PLP, this term. Based around their online careers test, which they have completed, the session will outlines their personal style and learning preferences, their values and other motivating factors. Four possible career areas which suit the above, can then be investigated. You can discuss this with your son by checking his print-out of results.

Open A BasketballCBC 66 defeated Cabra 43

It was basket for basket in the first quarter with CBC working on the inside two point shots and Cabra working the outside perimeter with three pointers. They hit two triples which necessitated CBC increasing their effort to take the first quarter by two points. The second quarter was a decidedly ugly affair as we dropped our defensive intensity on the perimeter allowing Cabra to come back with a double triple. We could only manage to score six points for the entire second quarter. In reflection the first two quarters was a mind game tussle as both sides had players with equally matched skills. We were down at the major break 22 – 25. It came down to who wanted it most as we approached the end play.

We appreciate the individual skills of players to get the ball but that was not going to be enough. To beat the talented Cabra side CBC had to combine those skills, communicate and work as a team. In practical terms, use every player on the court, extend our defence and especially pass to the player in the best position to capitalise with a score. The tactical plays are endless but the team came together in the third and fourth quarters.

The third saw CBC blitz Cabra with good defence and outlet passes to hit the opposition with unrelenting two pointers and the occasional three. We took the quarter 23 – 6 gaining a 14 point lead. The fourth quarter was in the same vein but the passes to the high post in addition to the combination passes increased the score. This was augmented with terrific defensive rebounds and an improvement in the transition in defence, which arguably was our weakest link in the last couple of games. Hands up in defence, a basic tactic, also paid dividends. Our best wishes to Cabra in their next and final Inter-Collegiate game against St John’s Grammar School.

Poynter was superb in driving the ball to the basket from the top of the D. He certainly made his mark on the drive with his quick and deceptive change of speed. He made an impression on the team in driving and getting his own rebound on a miss, spin for a second shot or execute a pass out. He scored 7 with a major influence in the first and third quarter.

Machar did not dunk but his contribution to the overall game was excellent as he made to the centre to receive and score. A highlight was a brilliant cut from the right on a pass to execute a perfect jumper for a two. He played smart basketball and contributed with seven points. But he still owes the team a dunk!

Sach played his usual solid game intercepting and making the passing rotations. He had a great influence in the first and third quarters despite playing with three personals to his name. Most inspiring was a strong cut to the basket off an inbound from the opposition back court to execute a classic lay-up. A team lifting moment! Finished with 11 points.

Balkwill had to re-adjust his strategy in rebounding and when he did ‘look out!’ He came on strong to grab most offensive and defensive rebound balls to go up strong and finish. He was the focus of some attention from the opposition defence and in one play was double decked to the floor. He recovered, made good position on a pass to extract justice by stepping in to the basket to score. Scored eight points for the team.

De Pinto was simply awesome in this game. He compensated for the team when they made wayward passes and turnovers by chasing every ball down to restore an advantage for the team. He is testament to the fact that you do not have to score huge points to have an alternative strategy to win a game. He is confident in his defensive and offensive game and is a major lynch-pin in the team.

Ciabattoni played his usual dependable game up front in defence and made the right position in offence. He made good position to hit threes and was rewarded in the fourth quarter. However, this was not his defining contribution as he combined this with a shotgun of twos in the fourth. He

put 10 valuable points on the board.

Megins did not waver from his role as offensive forward. He again got crucial defensive rebounds for the team and expertly passed off some balls for the team to score in addition to his eight points for the game. Megins was fundamental in the third quarter to score the first four points to get the team momentum going to eventually reach a 14 point advantage.

Hilliker was at his best in the first and second quarters when we were down. He intercepted and passed off to the runners in addition to forcing the ball down the court to score. Defensively Hilliker was at his best as he put extraordinary pressure on his opposite number to force the crucial turnovers when we needed them. He played a vital role to intercept two passes in the first quarter to slow the play down and let the team regroup.

Kurvers had to learn a new tactic: ‘How to play with opposition hanging off your arm’. In spite of this he worked the high post well to be a constant threat. That soon become a reality when be hammered home nine points against double teams. Also impressive was to see him move very quickly in defensive transition to cover the centre in defence. He made good position and rebounded well to seal the game with the last four points.

My thanks to the coaching team of Chris Mellow and Ann-Marie Kurvers. Parents, you were great, thank you. It all contributed to our 10th consecutive win for the season,

Best: Zachary Poynter, Michael De Pinto, Oliver Megins, Bryce Kurvers, Machar Machar.

Final Game: Inter-Collegiate game against Blackfriars Priory School. This is an away game at 10.30 am. Full CBC game uniform required on the day.

Primary competition

Just like our heroic Olympic sailors, our valiant Junior Campus chess players have placed themselves in an almost unassailable position to secure both Gold and Silver in the SA Junior Chess League Primary CBC C Grade competition. In the second-to-last round both CBC Gold and CBC White had a clean sweep in their matches to now be leading the competition by 2.5 points and 1 point respectively from their nearest competitor. If they bring their A game to the last round we will be cheering Aussie, Aussie, Aussie -- OI, OI, OI! The other 2 teams also played very well with a win and a draw for them; well done boys!

Year 10 DebatingRounds 3 & 4

Winter ills delayed this report, but did not deter our attendance, determination, thorough planning or persistent preparation. In spite of colds, the odd virus, wet weather and a tough opposition, we gathered, usually three times each week, to brainstorm ideas, articulate key points, research, predict the opposition team’s case and argument and plan our rebuttal points.

The challenge of more sophisticated topics this year required greater analysis and depth of thought. From the opening Round, when we argued “That literature is lost at 140 characters” and considered flash fiction and virtual versus real literature. Perhaps our best line was that “there’s no satisfaction in a single tweet”. The One-Card debate forced speakers to think on their feet. They connected more with the audience, where loyal parents sat, supporting our every word.

By Round 3, we knew to pick out key phrases from opposing speakers, and use cue cards as prompts only. We gratefully acknowledge the help of visiting Flinders University Student Teacher, Justin Schultz, whose expertise and interest in English and Visual Arts greatly assisted us with the topic, “That Banksy is the Da Vinci of his time”, and undoubtedly contributed to our 2-point defeat of Glenunga International High School Blue 10, the top-ranked team in the competition. Congratulations to Hamish Richardson, recipient of the Best Speaker Award, who summed up Banksy as Da Vinci ‘in a spray can’.

The Intercol Debate in Week 4 coincided with SADA’s Round 5 fixture on Wednesday; both were secret topics. Coming newsletters will feature those reports!

First XVIII FootballMercedes 14.14 (98) defeated CBC 13.14 (92)

Goal Scorers: L Harrison 7, S Raymond 2,

Best Players: Harrison, Starkey, Bielby, Robinson (all equal), Nye, Raymond, and all played well.

In a return of the earlier thriller at Blackwood, CBC began the game brilliantly creating many scoring chances with aggressive run on play. Harrison loomed large all day and his contested marking was outstanding for his seven goal haul (could have been??). Juliani for Mercedes did much the same at the other end but had to work much harder for his goals due to extreme pressure and run-off play from D’Amico who created an avenue for attack from defence.

Stefan Starkey apparently brought his own football in the first quarter such was his possession rate and usage effectiveness. Megins worked tirelessly all day and was well supported by Tollenaar. Robinson and Delaat the “twins” also had games to remember with high possession counts and great team play. Sam Raymond was an effective forward all day and has regained his confidence after a year off.

It all came down to this “someone has to be defensive side of the contest” and game over after a questionable umpiring decision and subsequent ball-up saw a brain fade by CBC let Mercedes in for an easy but heart-breaking goal.

It all augurs well for this week’s Inter-Collegiate Match versus Blackfriars at Prospect oval.

Mr Colin CurnowCoach

Year 9 FootballCBC 9.11 (65) defeated Cabra 4.7 (31)

Best Players: Strange, Daly, McPherson, Owens, Crisanti, Boffo, Colangelo

Goal Scorers: Daly (2), Perpetua, Nicholson (1), Koulizos (1), Bojovic (1), Strange (1), Owens (1)

CBC had played Cabra early in the season and in the knockout competition, comfortably beating them on both occasions. However, we were then at full strength and this time had just 17 players due to holidays and injuries. We were expecting an improved and desperate side and this was certainly true in the first quarter, which was low scoring but saw CBC down by 5 points.

Players were instructed to work harder but smarter and they responded in the second quarter with some excellent attacking football. Trent Daly’s ruck work was first class as he repeatedly palmed the ball to his left into the path of the left-footers Jack Strange and Jack Owens. This allowed for constant forward thrusts and inevitable goals. We led at half-time by 20 points.

The trend continued in the 3rd quarter and we went in at the last change up by 34 points. In the last quarter we maintained our lead as players were rotated around the field to some extent. It was an excellent team effort that required determination to overcome Cabra’s extra player and hence a very pleasing victory.

Mr Matthew CrisantiCoach

Year 8B Football ShC 9.9 (63) defeated CBC 2.1 (13)

Goal Scorers: Haydn Nihill (1), Tevin Odhiambo (1)

Best Players: Hayden Nihill, Josh Gregorace, Christian Baker, Lachlan Jarvis, Jordan Sennett-Perez

It was a challenging game against strong opposition. The team showed strong endeavour and commitment. We outscored Sacred Heart in the third quarter with some excellent ball movement and persistence. Tevin Odhiambo’s soccer skills were on show as he scored our first goal of the game. Well done.

Mr Jerome Teakle Coach

Prep B FootballSacred heart 8.15 (63) defeated CBC 4.1 (25)

Best Players: M Frederick, H Clarke, B Salvemini

Goal Scorers: M Frederick (3), L Best (1)

It was a good effort from the boys against a strong opposition. We kept fighting all day and were in the game for 3 quarters. There were some fantastic individual efforts and goals.

Mr Vince RignaneseCoach

Year 4/5 FootballSt Michael’s 9.4 (58) defeated CBC 4.2 (26)

Best Players: All played well.

Last week really was an example of how far the CBC Little Heroes had come. Earlier in the year, we played St Michael’s College and lost by over 100 points. This time the result was much closer and there were times when our intensity for the contest matched the opposition.

The most pleasing thing, though, from this game was the ability of all of the boys to stick to their team structures and play their role.

Our kicking for goal was much better as was our ability to stop the opposition from scoring; and when we had the opportunity to score we did this well.

Our midfield team won the majority of clearances.

One special mention must go to Callum Atkinson who again showed his class by working hard gut-running back in defence to save some scores by the opposition.

Daniel Gabrielli learnt this week again that when he finds some space he can find the ball and set up some promising attacks for us.

Ethan D’Angelo again played the kick behind the play beautifully and really did cause some confusion for the opposition.

Thanks again to Mr Baldwin for supplying the oranges and Mr Atkinson for waving the flags.

Our final challenge is against Blackfriars at Blackfriars.

Mr Bruce WereCoach

Year 2/3 Football CBC 6.1 (37) defeated highgate 4.4 (28)

Highgate is the only team in the competition we haven’t won against this season so the boys were keen to fire-up and take them on. And that’s exactly what they did! The first half was strong and clean, we took control of the ball from the centre clearances and executed the play so well, with the first half going CBC’s way 5 goals clean to 2.2. Highgate regrouped and looked to take control in the third quarter but with some gutsy efforts in the centre and our backline standing up we slowed the game and stopped them getting into any rhythm. The last quarter was a tight arm-wrestle with lots of play but neither side able to convert and that was good enough for CBC to take the win.

I must again say how well this group is going, We are now the team to beat in the comp. I am so proud of every one of them and what they have achieved this season. With 3 rounds to go I must say I am already looking forward to next year’s season as the guys are showing all of us they will make a tough well-drilled Year 4/5 team. Once again, great gutsy effort.

Open B SoccerCBC 11 defeated Pulteney Grammar 2

Best Players: Whole Team

Goal Scorers: Too many to keep count

CBC was far too strong for the Pulteney team, though struggling at the start of the match and looking very lethargic -- only 3-1 up at the half. During the second half CBC kicked into second gear and started dominating the match, keeping the ball inside their opponent’s defensive half nearly the entire period. 8 brilliant goals were scored in the second half, (probably due to the opponent’s no.1 keeper getting injured at the end of the first half). All in all, a great performance by all and another win notched up for the season.

Year 8A Soccer CBC 8 defeated Adelaide high 1

Goal Scorers: Kyle Gaweda (3), Dylan D’Agostino (3), Joel De Donatis (1), Rafael Stawicki (1)

On an uneven, boggy pitch, CBC dominated the entire match against an understrength, undermanned Adelaide High team. Special mention goes to Dylan Tindall who kindly stepped in to play for the opposition... and was clearly their best player!

The 8-1 score does not reflect our dominance; we had probably 25 shots on goal, many of which went directly at their goalie, or somehow managed to go wide. However, the manner in which the midfield created these opportunities was outstanding. The team-oriented, unselfish passing and running off the ball was a pleasure to watch. I especially commend Dylan D’Agostino for his efforts to bring others into the game, and Daniel Storti for his brilliant passing to set up a number of our chances.

I trust the efforts of recent weeks will carry us into our final, Intercol match with a positive, keen spirit.

Year 8B SoccerPembroke 14 defeated CBC 0

We were outplayed. Pembroke had some star forward players who could get the ball through with ease.

Our team had its moments. Julian Cece delivered a perfect pass that weaved from left of field, slicing between their galloping defensive line, through to Aidon.

Transitional keepers, Harry Isherwood, and Matthew Di Fillippo, had time out in the field and in goals.

Debut: Harry Kapoulos.

Open Table TennisCBC defeated Blackfriars

Maybe it was the early time slot. Maybe it was the home turf advantage. Or maybe it was the interchange bench with a team and a half with that lean and hungry pre-InterCol appetite. Whatever it was, victory was clenched from the jaws of defeat in a gallant display of raw energy and verve.

Well done.

We contemplated what it means to be number one, or number two, or number three as we wheeled our bicycles down Frome Road into the fading light.

Year 7/8/9 Table Tennis CBC 7 defeated St Paul’s 5

Although the boys lost the first four matches, they were as close as it gets - not one player finished with a score less than 26 to 31! Although the team felt deflated, with victory so close and yet so far, the team’s spirits were not dampened. We continued playing with determination, eventually making a mammoth comeback and sealing the win by two matches. Well done, team!
