WINTER 2017

The Hawk

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

As you browse through this edition of the Hawk Insider, I am sure that you’ll be amazed at the many accomplishments of our students. It could be in the academic arena, with over 140 colleges and universities coming to speak just to our juniors and seniors, or an opportunity to make radio contact with the International Space Station! Or perhaps our fabulous Arts Department, where there has been a great produc-

tion of Bye, Bye, Birdie, or two of our students being selected to play in the Rose Bowl Parade! It could be the phenomenon that is Kwity Paye, leading his team to our 7th consecutive State Championship in football, committing to the University of Michigan, and playing in the prestigious Under Armour All-America game in Orlando!

No matter what your area of interest, the young men of Bishop Hendricken make us proud on a daily basis. There is no more important area than the basic mission of our school, to bring each and every member of our community into a closer relationship with God. In this edition of the Hawk Insider, you will read about two initiatives, one that began last year and one this year, both spearheaded by Hendricken faculty members. For the second year, led by the efforts of Mr. Thomas and Mr. Mancuso, we hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for our neighbors, and Bishop Tobin was on hand to bless the gathering and to speak to our guests. This year, for the first time, led by Mr. Johnston, we hosted a pancake breakfast on Veteran’s Day, raising money to aid our alumni who are serving in the various branches of our military. A mission trip to Brownsville, Texas, led by Mr. Gambardella, was followed this February by our annual mission trip to Lima, Peru, where we stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized, which is a basic tenet of the Essential Elements of a Christian Brother education.

Grandparents’ Day, #GivingTuesday, concerts, NLI signings, and many, many more wonderful events capture the essence of the Bishop Hendricken community – loving, caring, and spiritu-al, dedicated wholeheartedly to the mission of our great school. Enjoy this latest edition, and please visit us as often as you can; you are always welcome home.

God Bless,

John A. Jackson ‘71, President

Our school’s vision states that the Hendricken man is confident in the power of the Gospel to meet the challenges of the future. In other words, the Hendricken man has faith. He knows that living faith instructs daily living. It reveals to him the sanctity of human life. It compels him to care for life at every stage. It inspires him to make a gift of his own life.

I have heard many powerful testimonies of men who received the gift of faith during their time at Bishop Hendricken High School. One of them recently shared with me that he believed his faith forever changed, and in a way saved, his life. These men have since put their Catholic faith into action by serving the country, their family, and the Church. Did you know that three of the men currently studying for priesthood in the Diocese of Provi-dence are Hendricken graduates? Over a dozen of our priests currently serving are former Hawks. They now return to the school throughout the year to bring our students Christ in the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation.

In January we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. It provides an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on the rich Catholic tradition that continues to form our boys. We thank God that we can speak of Christ and to Christ in our corridors and classrooms. We praise God in our Masses and devotions. We ask God to continue to protect and bless our school, so that more faith filled men will serve and lead our communities and the Church. The Hendricken man is confident in the power of the Gospel to meet the challenges of the future. He must be. And so must we.

~ Rev. Christopher Murphy

International Space Station Chat

Hendricken has been chosen as one of 11 U.S. semifinalists to host a radio contact with the International Space Station during the fall of 2017! This would become the first ever contact for a Rhode Island high school. The radio contact is being arranged through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) project which links schools around the globe with opportunities to speak with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Hendricken submitted a detailed proposal in support of its bid and has three members of the Hawks CyberPatriot Team, who passed the FCC’s amateur radio examination and earned their FCC call signs, who will be allowed to operate the radio to be used to talk to the ISS astronaut. Peer Mentor Jordan Dagrin '17 (left) uses his study period to assist Brook Golding '18 (right). Hendricken's Peer Mentors, like Jordan, use their free time to support and encourage students in our Options Program. Each day our mentors assist with various educational assignments (as seen at right in the computer lab) while also forming bonds of friendship beyond the classroom.Right: Jordan Dagrin ‘17 and Brook Golding ’18.

Hendricken CyberPatriots

The CyberPatriot Team placed in the top "Platinum" category and advanced to the regional round of the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The competition puts teams of students in the position of newly hired IT professionals managing the network of a small company. Teams are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities and hardening the system while maintaining critical services. RJ White ‘21, Xavier Lora ‘20, and Mac Cullen ‘21 make up the team, with Mr. DiPippo as their coach. All will play important technical roles in Hendricken’s Fall 2017 "RI Space Chat #2" with the International Space Station.

RI FIRST Tech Challenge

Hendricken’s Robotics Team competed in the RI FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) State Tournament Qualifier at New England Tech in Warwick, RI. The Hawks finished 2nd overall and earned first place in match play as they handily qualified for the state tournament. Hendricken also earned honorable mention for the judges‘ “Inspire Award,” the “Innovate Award” and “Think Award.” The Hawks won the judges’ “Control Award” for implementa-tion of multiple technologies in design and execution during the match play portion. Congrats to the team on advancing to the state tournament!

Voices for Democracy

Steven Marsocci '18 was announced as the statewide winner of the VFW's "Voices for Democracy" competition for his essay “First, A Citizen,” a personal and moving piece noting “the keystone to the republic rests in each of us, in our most important role as citizens.” The junior collected a $500.00 promissory note toward his college tuition and won an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in March to represent RI at the National Voice of Democracy Competi-tion. He is now eligible to win up to $30,000 in additional college scholarships. Steven noted "I must also credit the excellent educa-tion I am fortunate to receive each day at Bishop Hendricken High School. My teachers encourage my fellow Hawks and me to think about the world not only intellectually, but spiritually as well."

Congratulations to Jonathan Duranleau '16 (mellophone) and Ethan Lyons '17 (snare drum) who represented Hendricken and RI marching in the 128th Rose Parade with the prestigious Bands of America Honor Band in Pasadena, CA. The pair donned red, white and blue uniforms in the parade seen by millions on national television. The Bands of America Honor Band gives students from every high school band program in the country the oppor-tunity to audition for a performance spot so it's remarkable that Hendricken had 2 musicians accepted to perform in this unforgettable event!

Bye Bye Birdie Soars

Congratulations to the cast, crew and orches-tra who brought 4 performances of Bye Bye Birdie to Hendricken’s Harrop Theater in December. The delightful trip back to small town America in the 60's, high energy score, and hilarious cast of characters brought down the house!

Performing ArtsTrip to Disney

Our Hendricken Performing Arts students enjoyed a wonderful week at Walt Disney World in Orlando during the February break! Not only did they take in all of the theme parks, they also participated in theater, vocal and instrumental workshops culminating with a performance at Disney Springs at the end of the week. By all accounts it looked like a tough gig for the chaperones!

Cross Country Update

The Hawks finished 2nd overall in the RI Cross Country State Championship meet at Ponaganset High School. The Hawks also placed 6 runners on the All-State team led by Jordan Dagrin's (pictured) 10th place finish. Dagrin has committed to continue his career at Quinnipiac. The Hawks had an impressive performance and great effort as they conclud-ed their season by finishing fifth in the New England Championship in November. In addition, Hendricken’s JV cross country team reclaimed the state title with a great team victory at Ponaganset High School.

Hendricken SoccerHendricken’s soccer team has the distinction of never having missed the playoffs in the more than thirty years since Michael “Mickey” Rooney has been the head coach. Overall the team had a strong year coming into the post-season with an 8-1-5 record, but narrowly missed making it to the championship with a 1-0 loss to Ports-mouth in the semifinals. Senior Lucas Gesmundo ’17 capped off an incredible year with his commitment to continue to play for URI in the fall.

Coach Doyle Honored

The US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) selected Hendricken Coach Jim Doyle as the Boys' Coach of the Year for the state of Rhode Island. The honor is based on the performance of the Hendricken team through-out the 2016 season and is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our student athletes and Coach Doyle and his staff. Congratulations Coach Doyle on your tremendous career!

2016 All-USA RICoach of the Year

Paye DayThe phenomenal Kwity Paye ’17 had a year for the ages beginning with his commit-ment to play for top ranked University of Michigan. The 6’4” defensive end went on to earn Super Bowl MVP honors, played in the Under Armour High School Football All-America Game on ESPN on New Year’s Day, garnered First Team All-State accolades and topped it off with RI Gatorade High School Football Player of the Year. Most recently he was also featured in Sport’s Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section and was selected as this year’s Words Unlimited co-recipient of the Schoolboy of the Year Award. The football (and track and field) star will now bring his talents to the big stage, rather “The Big House,” in Ann Arbor in the fall when he joins the Wolver-ines. Watch for this star on the rise!

11th Year of Immersion in Lima, Peru

7 Hendricken students, chaperoned by Director of Campus Ministry, Tom Gambardella ’76 and his daughter, Hendricken librarian, Regina Connolly, spent their winter vacation in Lima, Peru for the 11th straight year of immersion. The group engaged in various activities to directly serve the poor, including working in the Edmund Rice Christian Brother School of Fe y Alegria #26, helping to build a small house for a needy family and a visit to a medical clinic in Villa El Salvador to bring donated medical supplies. They also took time to visit an orphanage and immersed themselves in the Peruvian culture assisting the impoverished people of this wonderful country with care and compassion. This is a truly life-changing mission trip for our Hawks. As Brother Casey so aptly noted "Nothing like a group that gets what is most important in life.”

Alums Step to the Plate on #GivingTuesday

It is with extreme gratitude that we announce we exceeded our $50,000 goal and raised $54,515 on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving.

Words cannot express our appreciation to Frank McMahon '81 whose generosity kicked-off #GivingTuesday at Bishop Hendricken. Mr. McMahon matched the first $10,000 in donations made to Bishop Hendricken on #GivingTuesday.

George Zwiener '87, father of Max Zwiener '17, was also one of our many generous donors who stepped to the plate in support of #GivingTuesday! George owns 4 Dunkin' Donuts franchises in Cranston and gave 25 cents to Bishop Hendricken for each cup of coffee sold on #GivingTuesday.

Hawk Nation proved once again that there is strength in numbers, passion when we join together, and nothing we won't do for the boys of Bishop Hendricken High School.

To all who contributed, please accept a big THANK YOU from the over 920 boys who will benefit from your kindness.

{1970s}

{History}I have fond memories of playing football from 1968-1970 for coaches Jack Dillon, Joe Mancini, Ed Fracassa, and Ed Wnuk. As exciting as it was to win a Class A Championship the best part of playing football revolved around the opportunity to build lifelong relationships that endure to this day. The game of football is physically and mentally challenging and one’s success usually depends on good coaching, talent, hard work, preparation and teamwork. Football teaches one life lessons and I believe it was my experiences playing football at Hendricken that played an integral role in influencing my personal, profes-sional, and coaching career. The aforementioned legendary coaches as well as Fred Drennan, Emo DiNitto, Bob Griffen, Ron Mosca, and my son and current head coach Keith Croft all have been part of a proud legacy of Hendricken football.

I remember hard-nosed practices and games playing with wonderful teammates such as Moose McCauley, Joe DiNitto, Jack Vitale, Bobby Schmidt, Len Sormanti, Tom Freeman, Brian Crudden, Doug Stone, Dan Whittaker, Rich Spaziano, and Steve Furness just to name a few. However, it was the relationships I built with my fellow classmates from the class of 1970 that exist to this day; some have passed away and some have moved away and some I see more than others, but the memories will never go away. I think of a group of young men who entered Hendricken not knowing one another, but eventually developed lifelong friendships and relationships through football.

In addition to these coaches and classmates I remember teachers that were so supportive of our football program and how excited they were to discuss Saturday afternoon’s game the following week in class. I remember Miss Martell asking Mike Traficante and Bill Turbitt to recap the game vs. Warwick Vets and having them address the class in French and Brother Michael questioning Tom Gelsomino, Mike McEntee, and Gregg Beecroft about a particular play and having Mr. Layfield ask Jim Cotter and Mike Shea about our chances to beat LaSalle.

The game of football is tough, unforgiving, physically challenging, humbling at times, and at times agonizing or exhilarat-ing, but it builds character and it insists on teamwork which ultimately develops friendships and memories that last forever. All of my teachers, coaches and classmates played integral roles in supporting Hendricken football. It is all my teammates who wore those gold helmets and all those who came before us and after us who share a common bond that is unique and meaningful and one that will be proudly shared forever.

While there have been numerous state championships throughout the years, including our current record-setting string of 7 consecutive state titles, the trophies will eventually get old and tarnished and will disappear and the cheers will fade away, but the relationships that we have built with our teammates will last forever. We were all part of playing for a football program that arguably is the most successful in RI high school football history and I will forever cherish being part of that. But for me I will more so remember coaches Dillon, Mancini, Fracassa, and teammates Cotter, Traficante, Gelsomino, Turbitt, Beecroft, Shea, Mallaghan, McEntee and so many others from the class of 1970.

GO HAWKS & Go Class of 70!

I believe it was my experiences playing football at Hendricken that played an integral role in influencing my personal, professional, and coaching career.

1970 Hawk Football: Fond Remembrances of Coaches,Teachers, Classmates & Teammateswritten by Earl "Buddy" Croft '70

Legendary Sportswritten by John Jackson ‘71, President, BHHS

One of my most vivid memories of the 1970’s at our school would begin with my days as a senior in the 1970-71 school year. I have been watching Hendricken football for over 40 years, and I can say without hesitation that the 1970 football team was one of the best in our school’s history. There was no Super Bowl in those days, but we had a terrific season, culminating with a Thanksgiving Day drubbing of Cranston West. To this day, there has never been a better set of linebackers than Brian Crudden, Don Bruen, and Dan Whittaker. Both Brian and Dan are in our Athletic Hall of Fame; in addition to being great football players, they excelled in wrestling and track.

I was one of the first group of students to play both basketball and baseball under the tutelage of legendary coach Ray Pepin, as he became the head Varsity baseball coach in the spring of 1971. He was the architect of the great athletic program that we have today, and he insisted that we needed to play against the best competition in order to get better – I think it worked!

{Legends}

Michael Roper...Then and Nowwritten by Frank Kernan ‘71

Those of us who attended Hendricken in the late sixties and early seventies were blessed to have Brother Michael Roper as a teacher. Bro. Michael headed the Religion Department, his classroom was 110, and all juniors had him as a teacher. His class was a hybrid of religion, political science and sociology. Brother Michael challenged us and motivated us. He took groups to work in the inner city, while others volunteered at the state hospital at Howard. He taught us to use our time and talent to improve the lives of others.

Brother Michael was a dynamic leader, his speeches at a pep rally could turn 800 boys into 800 fanatics. He gave us confidence and a sense of belonging. The memory of him walking purposely down the hall, pipe clenched in his teeth and greeting all of us by name is forever etched in my memory.

Now it is 45 years later, and visiting Hendricken on October 2nd, was Michael Roper. He was attending the Hall of Fame ceremony, along with Lawrence Lussier and Brother Joseph Walsh. His hair is white, and a little thinner, but he is still Michael Roper, quick witted, confident and magnetic. I asked him if he still smoked a pipe and he said “ No, gave it up a few years ago, miss it though.” “Too bad” I replied as I pulled pipes and a pouch from my sport coat pocket, “ I was hoping we could have a bowl. ”His eyes lit up and he smiled,“ Think we’d get in trouble if we spark up here in the foyer?” “ Probably” I replied. “Let’s head outside” as he dashed out the door. I handed him a pipe, which he expertly filled and lit up “Wonderful, I do miss this.” We talked about how the school has grown and changed, and how all these years later he is proud of his years here. He told me he teaches at a prep school on 42nd St. in New York and still enjoys teaching. He said he’s in a good place in his life. He is still Michael Roper.

It was particularly gratifying to see Lawrence Lussier and Joseph Walsh as the Class of ‘71 celebrated it’s 45th reunion weekend. We owe these men so much, they dedicated their lives to making us the best we could be, and we will forever appreciate them.

The late sixties and early seventies were an interesting time to be a high school student at Bishop Hen-dricken to say the least. My freshman year was marked with the election of Richard Nixon to his first term as President. The country was divided over the Vietnam War and the recent assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy created a national sense of hopelessness. But my life as a ninth grader at Hendricken was insulated from these world events and my day-to-day existence was more concerned with getting good grades in Brother Regis Crowley’s daily Latin quizzes, solving Mr. Hutton’s Algebra I problems and getting a girlfriend.

America was going through a cultural, social, and political upheaval, but life at 2615 Warwick Avenue continued in a bit of a vacuum from the rest of the world. At the end of my sophomore year, the shoot-ings at Kent State University resulted in “Four dead in Ohio.” But the big news at Hendricken a month later was not a nation-wide upheaval, but rather the news that the Holy Cross Brothers were leaving Hen-dricken which threatened to be the end of our school. A different kind of protest began with Hendrick-en parents and alumni working to save Hendricken. These dedicated men and women worked valiantly to save our school and after a year of effort, the Save Hendricken Committee influenced Bishop McVin-ney to work out a deal with the Christian Brothers to come and staff Hendricken, thus saving the school.

The Christian Brothers amassed a dream team of administrators and teachers which re-energized the school and my senior class ushered in this new era for Hendricken. Still in the safe Hendricken bubble, our senior year was consumed with our social life (which our parents knew next to nothing about), Hen-dricken athletics, and getting into college. The latter was of great importance as the military draft was still in effect and a “college deferment” would keep us out of the military, and therefore safe.

In March of our senior year there was a remarkable change in Rhode Island’s legal system and our lives – the drinking age was changed from 21 to 18. This new reality came from the logic that if an eighteen year old could be drafted they should be allowed to buy a beer. It is doubtful that the State Legislature really considered the ramifications of this change, but this new law changed the dynamic in high schools across the entire state, including Hendricken.

June came around and our graduation ceremony was held in the gym on a hot and sticky Friday night. The members of the class of 1972 were together for the last time in our safe cocoon we called Hendrick-en. As I left Hendricken that June evening, which marked the eleventh Hendricken commencement exercise, I had no idea what the next four years had in store for me and how the hand of God would bring me back to Hendricken sooner than I could imagine.

It was 1971, a brand new Dodge Charger cost $3,579.00, Jiffy peanut butter (a popular item in lunch bags in the cafeteria) was $.59, and a cassette recorder was $29.88. We were freshman in a school that had almost closed its doors and the first ones to be part of the “new Hen-dricken” with 16 Irish Christian Brothers newly arrived, led by Brother Thomas F. Ferrick, as Principal and Superior of the Brothers’ residence with faithful “Crunch,” his dog, by his side. They were the A TEAM, sent with a mission, to bring Bishop Hen-

dricken High School and its less than 300 students to excellence. The cigar smoking (in his office) Brother Sheahan; the ever wise counselor, Brother Crogan; the smiling ruddy faced Brother Maus; and the “senior in years, but junior in youthfulness” revered Brother Loftus did well, for I write this today because they achieved that goal and more! How grateful we are, and always will be to those who gave their all, parents, alumni, clergy, religious brothers and friends, so that Hendricken could not only survive but soar ahead. How fitting that the Hawk is our mascot since the sky’s the limit for this school! May God continue to bless this school that we love and call home. “Live Jesus in our hearts … forever!”

“The A TEAM”written by Father Robert L. Marciano ‘75

When we started at Hendricken in September 1972 Richard Nixon was in the White House, polyester plaid was all the rage, and annual tuition was $450. 2615 Warwick Avenue became a second home for many of us as the Brothers would open the gym, open the library, and open their hearts to an inquisi-tive and rambunctious bunch of adolescents. Our Class of 1976 was full of both talent and personali-ties. There were four National Merit Finalists, incredibly talented musicians and actors, photographers, and multiple all-state athletes. In addition to the closeness we had (and still have) with one another, we developed a tremendous bond with faculty that would last a lifetime. I can still smell Brother Sheehan’s pipe and Brother Maus’ cigarettes, appreciate Brother Loftus’ wisdom, and duck when somebody mentions Brother Wright. Father Richman, our school Chaplain, celebrated my wedding Mass many years after graduation and remained a close friend until his passing. The steady and guiding hand of those men with our collection of zany, loud, but always supportive friends made for a special time in our lives. Whether you were a member of the outstanding marching band, an athlete, or one of the many guys in between we all wore those Hendricken jackets and letter sweaters with tremendous pride. We were, and remain Hendricken Men. It mattered then. It matters now.

{1970s}

Many alumni classes often call themselves the greatest class that ever graced the halls of Hendricken, however, in sole regards to the Class of '76 it happens to be the truth. We did have a great class and 40 years later I count the guys I first met at Hendricken among my closest friends.

What do I remember best? We had exceptional leaders, mentors and teachers. For example, we were held spellbound by the charis-

matic presence of Brother Arthur A. Loftus as he encouraged us to follow in the steps of Jesus. I think back with amusement as I recall that in my 4 years at Hendricken I never once saw Brother Loftus wearing anything but his black cassock along with a cincture and that includes while on the field watching his beloved Hawks baseball team. Yet, sometimes (okay often) I didn't work to my full potential, just take the sociology class of Brother Sean Crogan for example. Whereas Brother Loftus encouraged us to make God a part of our lives it was Brother Crogan who often reminded me that unless I shaped-up really quick and start applying myself I'd be meeting God sooner rather than later. It worked! There's a reason why Brother Loftus has not one but two scholarships named after him and Brother Crogan's impact on students (poor choice of words?) is legendary. It’s why to this day we hold them in the highest regards, it began with Brothers Crogan and Loftus keeping us well grounded, well guided and well-motivated.

Live Jesus in our hearts.... forever!

The Greatest Class Everwritten by Bob Preston ‘76

When reflecting on my years at BHHS I often realize and appreciate that the relation-ships developed then are still true and more dear today than ever before.

We recently celebrated our 40th reunion at the school. Father Murphy kindly celebrated Mass for the class of 1976. Father shared words that I will carry throughout my life. “The Brotherhood and Fellowship that we each share will

never be broken as we travel down our own roads of life. We also have the responsibility to share our fellowship with current and future alumni."

I realize how blessed I was to have been able to spend

my time at a wonderful institution with tremendous educators, and friends for life. We all shared our stories, noting how some of us may have a little less hair, and a bit more girth. However, the love of our brother classmates will always be strong.

God has blessed us all, and will continue to do so. We only need to ask for those blessings.

When I started at Hendricken, like many of us, I was a scrawny and not so self confident kid. In fact, Coach Fiore once jokingly called me the “110 pound terror from Exeter.” I was also one of the very few non-Catholics in the school.

The next four years were times of incredible growth, friendship, hard work, and most of all, fun. If nothing else, our class was one of the most mischievous, as is evidenced by the many hallway chants such as “Hello Betty,” the melodious chant for the Brother Mattus, and doing pushups in the senior physics class behind Mr. DiPrete’s (AKA Mr. Wizard) back when he went to the chalk board. Conversely, we revered Brother Loftus, feared Brother Crogan and his “CIA” and adored Doc Sheehan, Brother Devlin and others.

From the years of 1974 through 1978, Hendricken had started to come in to its own in many ways, especially athletically, and our class certainly helped play a role in that transition. Personally, and especially as a non-Catholic, I truly enjoyed the camaraderie and the experi-ence of going to Mass with what has turned out to be some of my longest lasting and dearest friends. It is hard to believe that we will have soon been graduated for almost 40 years, but yet I can still remember many of the scenes from that time period as vividly as when they happened. The fraternal bonds, the experiences, and the memories of deep rooted friend-ships will certainly last throughout our lives. We should all be grateful, and extremely thankful, for having had the opportunity for the experience. It is great to see that the school has maintained its principles of character build-ing and continues to foster the growth of young men from all walks of life.

ories}It was the 1970’s and the RI Interscholastic Basketball League was at its peak. The

public schools ruled the roost, capturing championship after championship. The rivalries were fierce and spirited and the top tier teams were primarily from the greater Providence Metropolitan area. The civil rights movement and race inequality issues had become an integral part of the high school athletic scene. In many situations the games between parochial and Providence based schools were played in the afternoon, with a police presence or rescheduled to a neutral court to limit the threat of a potential conflict. This atmosphere along with the game’s pressure created an intense environment to play a high school basketball game.

The 1978 Hendricken basketball team was coming off one of the schools most successful seasons ever. The team had only three losses including the state title game…all at the hands of Central High School, the dominant program of the 70’s, but the tide was about to turn as the ‘79 Hendricken team was returning four starters for the upcoming season. The 1979 coaching staff and team were on a mission to win the State and New England titles, both Catholic and public. Pressure was in the air and the team was up for the challenge. The players had worked hard in the off season and the foundation for a championship season was in place. The uniqueness of the ‘79 team was centered on respect for one another and total unselfishness on the court. Head coach Raymond Pepin and assistant coach Donald Hickey had done an impressive job preparing and blending a group of young men from all over RI into the true definition of a team. This preparation included pre-season scrimmages with teams from New Jersey and New York as well as local college teams. This prepared us for a championship run. The ‘79 Hawks finished the season with a 33-1 record. Bishop Hendricken had not won a RI Interscholastic League state title until 1979. The titles included RI Metropolitan Division Champions, RI State Champions, New England Catholic Champions, and New England Public School Champions. The ‘79 season was a year my teammates and I will always look back on with pride and accomplishment.

The class of 1986 held its 30th Anniversary Reunion at Schartner Farm. From all firsthand accounts, it was one for the ages. The planning committee of Tim Schartner, Jon Cyr, Bill Provencal, Dave Such, John Castore and Peter Thomas put on a reunion that wasn't your ordinary high school reunion. Over 70 alumni and their guests enjoyed a locally grown and raised rib and chicken dinner with all the fixings. There was a raw bar and with the generosity of an alum from '86, the beverage bar remained open for most of the night. If that wasn't enough, there was a surprise fireworks show that was absolutely breathtaking. There were s’mores, a fire pit, and cigars for all the guests. Even a blackout could not slow down the party atmosphere during the night. The alumni really enjoyed the faculty members who came out to say hello such as John Berry, Steve Crawford, Ed Markowski and Joe Adamec. By all school records, it looks like it was the largest single class reunion in Hendricken's storied history!

Our Hawks enjoyed a fun night of reminiscing at Hendricken's Annual Open Alumni Night in November! Congratulations to the Class of '86 on winning the team trivia contest and bragging rights for a year! Many thanks to all of the great Hawks who attended with special thanks to Terry Crogan for his guest appearance! #HawksForLife

At lunch your dime bought you an 8-ounce coke or a 10 ounce RC Cola-add a fifteen cent order of fries and you are set for the afternoon. Pep rallies with male cheerleaders-so what. Mixers with girls from St.X or Bay View. Wearing hush puppies or sneakers-coat and tie-a wonderful time with The

Mixers with girls from St.X or Bay View. Wearing hush puppies or sneakers-coat and tie-a wonderful time with The
