Dr. Smith’s presentation was stimulating and entertaining, and demonstrated the speaker’s wit, intelligence, originality and vision. Through the leadership of theBibliocentre and its User’s AdvisoryGroup (UAG) two complementary

groups were established to pilot a virtualreference project from the perspective ofurban, rural, small, medium and large col-leges. One group managed technical servic-es and the other group managed client serv-ices. Together these groups decided that asynchronous service would best meet theperceived needs of their users, i.e., usersexpect virtual reference to be live. The twogroups reviewed current virtual referencetools including LSSI and Question Point,and considered others.

Participation in the pilot was voluntary andgrew as the pilot project evolved.Participating colleges contributed time andhuman resources. The pilot included:Algonquin, Centennial, Conestoga,Confederation, Georgian, George Brown,Humber, Loyalist and St. Clair Colleges andThe Bibliocentre. The purpose of the pilotwas to provide opportunities for many col-leges to participate and to enable staff tobecome engaged with virtual reference. Thehope was that some colleges would champi-on virtual reference. The pilot was sched-uled for the summer term and the hours ofoperation were 11:00-3:00 Monday toFriday for a four week period. Althoughthe pilot was brief it provided time for staffto work with the Question Point product ina limited environment. Three collegesmade Question Point available to their usersand several colleges communicated witheach other in “role-play” as part of theirvirtual reference trial. For staff new to vir-tual reference this provided a risk freelearning environment

The outcome of the pilot project was sharedthrough the following reflections of the par-ticipants. Participants commented on sever-al aspects of Virtual Reference includingtechnical, process, and human issues thatarose using Question Point. Participantsliked the range of applications available inQuestion Point, specifically chat, co-brows-ing and sharing applications with the

patron. The pre-designed generic scriptswere also considered beneficial. The featurethat allows the library user to take controland become involved in the search, while,simultaneously the library staff member“approves” this role enables maintenance ofsome sense of order in the process. Theprocess of co-browsing, although beneficial,was considered to be cumbersome due tothe number of steps required in the process.It was also noted that during a virtual refer-ence session it was disconcerting not to beable to know for sure what the user wasviewing.

The human issues identified concerned theneed for policies and guidelines and mostcritically, awareness that not everyone willbe suited to virtual reference work, nor willall reference questions be suitable to the vir-tual reference environment. These salientreflections will set the course of directionfor the working groups.

The technical services and client servicesworking groups will now define policiesand standards of practice, modes of training,and ways to monitor the ongoing evolutionof the Colleges Virtual Reference initiative.

This is a new era of technology for collegesand having a consortium to experiment withsuch new technologies is an important ele-ment in enabling colleges to move forward.The participants are excited about how thiswill re-engineer their delivery of referenceservices for the future. n n n

Ontario Colleges’ Pilot for Virtual Reference:Status Report

he placed on feedback from his audience,left time for questions, and expressedgratitude for the opportunity to venture“north of Bloor” to speak to OLA’s aca-demic librarians.

He stressed the importance of core goalsfor FIS: firstly, to define clearly what thisdepartment does, and secondly, to pro-mote this within the University. Hedescribed the problems of terminology:for example, the word “information” doesnot lend itself to “exquisite precision,”and Information Studies is highly interdis-ciplinary in nature. In addition, variousacademic departments or disciplines seethemselves as engaged in activitiesinvolving the storage, usage, and dissemi-nation of information. Therefore, FISmust stake a clear and unambiguous claimto its role on campus.

Professor Smith explained the need for adistinctive mission: narrower than the useof information, higher than the use oftechnology, and broader than what is com-monly understood by the “L-word.”

While wishing to preserve what is bestabout the traditions, history, and depth ofexpertise within FIS, Professor Smith isstriving to build a new vision which takesaccount of the profound changes to thematerial substrate of information practice.

Professor Smith identified some activitiesand alliances that could make FIS a cata-lyst in piloting change in informationpractice across the University. Strategicalliances between FIS and institutionssuch as the Monk Centre can realize thebenefits of mutual expertise. Fusing sepa-rate areas of study, such as libraries,archives and museums, can also fosterprogress. An infusion of new and relevantskills can be attained by creating short-term, rotating faculty appointments withinFIS for professional and academic expertsfrom outside fields, including both privateand public sectors. Dr. Smith also sug-gested the creation of new combineddegree programs (e.g. Law andInformation Studies), and more inter-fac-ulty communication among Deans. n n n

Not only will there be something for everyone, there may be twosomethings for everyone! We have sessions on information litera-cy and instruction, reference and research, partnerships, advocacyand marketing, technical services, collections and resources, andvalues and vision in librarianship. Our experienced and knowl-edgeable speakers are not from only Ontario, but across Canadaand the United States. Here are some highlights from the 2005OCULA program.

Informational Literacy InstructionUnder the banner of information literacy we have Jane Burpeeand Peter Wolf from the University of Guelph to discuss learningtheories and teaching techniques in “Experimental LearningTheory? They Didn’t Teach That in Library School”. FromPurdue University, Cheryl Kern-Simirenko will discuss how theconcept of multiple literacies is tackled in their innovative“Digital Learning Collaboratory”. A blueprint for faculty andlibrarian collaboration will be outlined by Georgian College’sKaren Halliday and Jacquelin Limoges in “Librarian and FacultyCollaboration: A Blueprint for Integrating Information Literacyinto the Curriculum”. Barbara Fister from Gustavus AdolphusCollege in Minnesota offers “Information Literacy and theMarketplace of Anxieties: Interdisciplinary Approaches for theEvaluation of Sources”.

Innovations in Reference Service Delivery“The Art of the Reference Interview”, both in person and virtual-ly will be explored by University of Western Ontario’s CatherineRoss and Kirsti Nilsen. Seneca College’s Mara Bordignon willdiscuss the “Challenges at a College Reference Desk” by shed-ding light on the changing environment and dynamics of refer-ence in an academic setting. Mark Robertson from YorkUniversity and Diane Granfield from Ryerson University willreport on a study that has explored the motivations, expectations,and perceptions of virtual reference users in “Virtual ReferenceUsers: Expectations & Perceptions”. Librarians from SimonFraser University in British Columbia will share their experiencesof taking face-to-face reference service out of the library in“Librarians Have Left the Building – Ask Us Here!”.

Technology, Technical Services, and Statistics“GIS Service and Outreach in an Academic Library” will beexplored by Andrew Nicholson from University of Toronto atMississauga. We have two statistics sessions this year with “A

Tour of StatsCan” by Victoria Crompton from Statistics Canada,and “The Dust Has Settled: Navigating the 2001 Census fromGeography to Demography” with Ryerson’s Suzette Giles andJeff Moon from Queen’s. The hot topic of federating searchingwill be discussed by Carolyn Lam and Jane Foo of SenecaCollege in “Implementing Federated Searching: A College’sPerspective”. Improvements in VDX software will be highlight-ed in “RACER 2.7: What the Future Entails” with AmyGreenberg from University of Toronto and Anne Fullerton fromUniversity of Waterloo. Confederation CollegeConfederation College Library is pleased to announce a new collec-tion on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) -- the largest col-lection in Northwestern Ontario. The collection of books, videos,and CDs is the result of a partnership between the Library, theNorWest Community Health Centres, and the Fetal Alcohol Support& Information Network. FASD can create a variety of problemsthroughout the various stages of a person's life, including every-thing from motivational problems and mental illness, to earlyschool dropout or chronic unemployment. These occur as a resultof the fetus having been exposed to alcohol. The collection is avaluable addition for the nursing, early childhood, and social serv-ice programs at the College. It will also be made available to theentire community of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.

Fleming CollegeThis fall, Fleming College celebrated the official opening of itsEnvironmental Technology wing. This new addition at the Schoolof Environmental & Natural Resources Sciences in Lindsay,Ontario is one of the most environmentally sound commercialbuildings in Canada. This exciting new teaching and learning winghas a green roof, a constructed wetland and a walkway embeddedwith plant and animal specimens that is part of the TransCanadatrail. It also houses a geomatics lab, a computing learning com-mons, a mapping lab, a biodiversity commons and a new library.This integrated facility allows students to move freely from the bio-diversity lab, where they can sign out specimens such as skull sets,leaf collections and bird wings with the Sirsi library system; to thelibrary, where they can use the maps, periodicals and books toresearch their species. The library is approximately 18,000 squarefeet and seats about 120 students. With doors leading to all of thelabs from the library, the library is truly the hub of learning withinthe new facility.

Ryerson UniversityRyerson University Library has completed renovations to build theRonald D. Besse Information and Learning Commons. Renovationsbegan in May 2004, with the targeted date of completion for thefirst week of classes in September. The main floor of the libraryhas been reconfigured to accommodate a new entrance, and renova-tions have been made to the Circulation area and Borrower Servicesdepartments. Other projects included the construction of theCommons, which will house workstations populated with comput-

Lorna Rourke receives AcademicLibrarianship AwardBy Wendy Rogers, University of Guelph Library

Lorna Rourke of the University of Guelph Library recentlyreceived the Academic Librarianship Award granted by theUniversity of Guelph Faculty Association. This prestigious awardprovides peer recognition of colleagues who have made signifi-cant contributions to the academic life of the University.

As the Academic Liaison Librarian for the School of English andTheatre Studies at Guelph, Lorna has worked particularly hard toenhance electronic collections in support of the School. She hasacted as the manager of the Virtual Reference service Guelphoffers with York and Ryerson. Lorna is committed to teachingstudents how to become better researchers.

Her commitment to teaching extends well beyond her own library,however. Lorna has taught reference skills through MohawkCollege’s Library Techniques & Information Broker Program(1990-1991; 1998-1999), and has taught the full-credit AcademicLibraries course at Western’s Faculty of Information and MediaStudies. The Academic Libraries course is unique—none of theother English-language library schools in Canada offers a compa-rable course. Through this course, Lorna has made an importantcontribution to the teaching and learning about academic librariesin Canada, serving as a role model for future academic librarians.

Former student Melanie Boyd (MLIS, Western ’04) recalls herexperience in that course: “I remember ideas, even ideas aboutideas. I remember strong, productively uncomfortable thoughtsand feelings in myself and in others. I remember my mind beingchanged and, even, changing minds – and I remember . . . the stu-dents (and prof) laughing – a lot.”

Lorna has proven her commitment to advancing librarianshipthrough her participation on the Guelph Public Library Board(1995-2001) and in various involvements with the OntarioLibrary Association, including President of the Ontario Collegeand University Library Association (1992-1993). n n n

ers connecting to the Library’s electronicresources, and a technology classroom tofacilitate instruction and the development ofresearch skills. The Writing Centre has alsomoved into the reconfigured space to allowfor better partnerships in support of studentsuccess.

University of Western OntarioThis summer, several D.B. Weldon Librarystaff members have been working on a proj-ect to gain much needed user space, and atthe same time turn the GovernmentPublications collection into a GovernmentPublications Research Collection (GPRC).As part of this project, Western Librarieswill be adopting the Library of Congressclassification system for government publi-cations in lieu of the current CODOC clas-sification scheme. Maureen Ryan, a refer-ence/instruction/collections librarian inWeldon, has been working with Jim Ford, acataloguer in Library Technical Services, inconsultation with Wendy Kennedy,Associate University Librarian (InformationServices) on an LC-modified classificationthat will reflect unique elements ofCanadian publications not expressedthrough LC.

As a result of the change in service deliveryat the Allyn & Betty Library to one servicedesk, Taylor staff members have been invit-ed to make presentations on the change,including:

l a presentation entitled "UWO IntegratedService Desk" by Joan Kammerer andCarrie Kocela at an Information ServicesTraining Retreat, University of Waterloo inApril;

l a presentation by Eeva Munoz to "TheLibrary as Place" annual meeting workshopof the Association of Canadian MedicalColleges (ACMC) in April; and

l a poster session, presented by EevaMunoz, and co-authored by Harriet Rykseat the 25th International Association ofTechnical University Libraries (IATUL)Conference in Krakow, Poland in June.

During the summer and continuing throughto October 2004, documents from WesternLibraries' Music Library have been on dis-play in Vienna as part of an exhibit featur-ing Alma Rosé at the Jüdisches MuseumWien (Jewish Museum Vienna). Seventy-one items from Western's world classGustav Mahler-Alfred Rosé Collection,including letters, photographs, telegrams,concert programs and music scores, havebeen lent for a commemorative exhibit,"Alma Rosé: from the Concert Hall toAuschwitz". The late Mrs. Maria C. Rosé,widow of Music Professor Alfred Rosé,donated the Mahler-Rosé Collection to theUniversity of Western Ontario. The exhibitopening received extensive European mediacoverage.

University of WindsorIn January, Leddy Library’s Art Rhyno wasawarded the OCULA AcademicLibrarian of the Year Award. InFebruary, The University of Windsor’sCentre for Studies in Social Justice namedLeddy librarian Tad Venkateswarlu as itsSocial Justice Person of the Year. In April,Leddy’s Leila Wallenius was presented withthe President's Employment EquityAward, which recognizes an individual'soutstanding contribution to theEmployment Equity Program.

In light of these recent accomplishmentsand to mark the hard work that all theLeddy Library staff had put forward tomake the first year of the double cohort asuccess, we threw a big party in April forourselves called The Leddy Celebration.

York UniversityThe Steacie Science and Engineering

Library at York University has recentlyundergone extensive renovations. The

Library was closed for several months thissummer. The new Library, which openedthis September, is much more spacious, andwill provide more public workstations,group study rooms, and comfortable, openareas to relax, read, and study.

York is participating in the ARL-sponsoredSAILS project: Standardized Assessment ofInformation Literacy Skills. York will beadministering an online questionnaire to200+ undergraduates starting this fall.The purpose of the project is to develop astandard instrument for measuring levels ofinformation literacy. The University ofWestern Ontario is the other Ontario univer-sity participating in this project. n n n

Canadore College / Nipissing University Barbara Lee is retiring as AssociateDirector, Library Services forCanadore College and NipissingUniversity after over 30 years ofdedicated library service in North Bay,Ontario. She has plans to travel exten-sively with her husband Nate, and to con-tinue as an active community volunteer inthe town of Sundridge.

As a result of Barbara Lee’s retirement,Donna Bourne-Tyson is the newAssociate Director. Donna has beenworking in the Education CentreLibrary since September 2003 asManager, Library Technical Services.She previously held the position ofSystems Manager and Head ofReference & AV at the North Bay PublicLibrary.

University of GuelphThe University of Guelph Library ispleased to welcome five new librariansthis fall:

Catherine Steeves joins the library as theAssociate Chief Librarian for InformationTechnology Services (ITS). In this newposition, Catherine will mange the ITSunit, provide strategic leadership for ITand contribute to the overall leadership ofthe Library. Catherine has held libraryand information technology positions atthe University of Alberta, in the privatesector and at the University College ofCape Breton. Catherine has been both aparticipant and a facilitator at the presti-gious Northern Exposure to LeadershipInstitute.

Justin Harrison is a recent graduate ofWestern’s MLIS program. In a previouslife, Justin spent six years working as achef in Vancouver hotels. He will bedoing collection development and liaisonfor Political Studies and GovernmentPublications.

MJ D’Elia is a recent graduate ofDalhousie’s MLIS program. He studiedEnglish and Visual Arts at Western beforegoing to library school. He will be work-ing in liaison with departmental responsi-bilities.

Pascal Lupien comes to the library fromthe University of New Brunswick, wherehe was a user services librarian. He is agraduate of the University of Montreal’sMLIS program. He will be working inliaison with departmental responsibilities.

Melanie Boyd is a recent graduate ofWestern’s MLIS program. She comes tothe library in a contract position, and shewill be working in liaison with depart-mental responsibilities.

Humber CollegeMargie Zekulin, Electronic ProductsLibrarian, took early retirement at the endof June; her replacement is Mark Bryant.Mark is a graduate of St. ThomasUniversity (BA), University of NewBrunswick (MA - History) and Universityof Western Ontario (MLIS). He hasworked at the Harriet Irving Library,University of New Brunswick and com-pleted two co-op placements with theUniversity of Guelph. Mark's job title isReference and Information Literacylibrarian.

Lisa DiBarbora is the successful candidatefor the Virtual Services Librarian posi-tion. She has a BA from Queen’sUniversity and a Master of Library andInformation Science from University ofWestern Ontario. Her work experienceincludes working at the Canadian Centrefor Management Development in Ottawaand the Stauffer and the EducationLibraries at Queen's University.

Karina Fong, Collections Developmentand Technical Services Librarian, retiredfrom Humber after 30 years. She isreplaced by Maureen Hyland. Maureen's

BA is from Carleton University, and herlibrary degree is from UBC. Her workexperience includes working at the GreatLibrary, Law Society of Upper Canadaand University Library, University ofCalgary.

Mary Goral is replacing Lynda MacLeodas the Reference Services LibraryTechnician at Lakeshore campus. Lyndaretired the end of July after 23 years.Mary has an advertising art diploma fromFanshawe College, a BA from theUniversity of Western Ontario and alibrary technician diploma from SenecaCollege. She has worked at VictoriaCollege, University of Toronto, MarkhamPublic Library, Toronto District SchoolBoard and Seneca College.

Susan Samuels is the successful candi-date for the Virtual Services LibraryTechnician position. Her educationincludes a Bachelor of Science in AppliedMathematics from York University and alibrary technician diploma from SenecaCollege. Susan has been working at theNorth circulation desk since the fall; shealso has work experience with ScotiabankBusiness Information Services andCanada Food Service & Dining LP.Susan replaces Doug Willford who retiredfrom Humber after 32 years.

Jeannie An has been appointed to theposition of Business Librarianat Innis Library beginning July 19, 2004.Jeannie comes to McMasterfrom the Joseph L. Rotman School ofManagement at the University ofToronto where she served as PublicServices Librarian. She was also aformer intern at Innis.

Krista Godfrey joined Mills MemorialLibrary as a Reference Librarianin July 2004. Krista graduated from FIMSin 2003. She has an MA in Classics fromMcMaster and worked as an intern at theInnis Library (Business) prior to herappointment at Mills.

Robin Sakowski has joined MillsReference as an intern from August 23 toApril 30. Robin has completed two termsat FIMS. She has a BA and an MA inEnglish from the University ofSaskatchewan, and severalyears' experience as a bookseller.

Arvind Singh is the first intern to beappointed at the Health SciencesLibrary. He joined the team on August 23,2004, having completed one term atFIMS. Arvind graduated from McMasterwith a BA Honours in English, andworked in Mills Library as a studentassistant in his final year (1993-1994). Hehas since worked as an associate teacherand in customer service.

Marcia Salmon was appointed to theposition of Cataloguing Policy Librarianon August 9, 2004. Marcia previouslyheld positions in the CataloguingDepartment at York University Libraryand Environment Canada MeteorologyDivision Library.

Ryerson UniversitySonny Banerjee (B.A., B.Ed., M.L.I.S.)has been appointed to the position ofIntranet Librarian, Reference, Researchand Instructional Team. Sonny originally

worked as a Reference Assistant, and sub-sequently in a contract position to devel-op a Library Intranet at Ryerson prior tohis appointment. Sonny will continue tooversee the development and manage-ment of the Library Intranet, in additionto assuming reference and subject liaisonresponsibilities.

Jane Binksma (B.A., M.L.I.S.) has beenappointed to the position of AcquisitionsLibrarian, Collections Team. Janeworked as a serials intern at RyersonLibrary prior to her appointment, and willbe responsible for the coordination of thelibrary's acquisitions strategy, in additionto assuming reference and subject liaisonresponsibilities.

University of Western OntarioCarrie Kocela was the successful candi-date for the position ofInstructional/Liaison Librarian for HealthSciences in the Allyn & Betty TaylorLibrary, starting in September 2003.Carrie had earlier worked in Taylor on aco-op placement and as a contract librari-an in Taylor's reference and instructionalservices. Carrie holds degrees in Biologyand Education from the University ofWindsor, as well as an MLIS fromWestern.

In September 2003, Marisa Mitchelljoined the Allyn & Betty Taylor Librarystaff as a contract librarian for a two-yearperiod. Marisa is responsible for out-reach and community activities in theHealth Sciences and Medicine. Marisaholds two degrees from Western: anHonours Zoology degree and an MLIS.

In January 2004, Ruth Wallace,Reference/Instruction/CollectionsLibrarian in the D.B. Weldon Library,participated in the Northern Exposure inLeadership 6-day workshop designed toexplore and develop leadership styles,discuss the future of librarianship, andprovide networking opportunities.

Tom Adam became Western Libraries'first Information Literacy Coordinator inMarch 2004, with accountability for theenhancement and extension of informa-tion literacy programming for theLibraries. Tom is located in the TeachingSupport Centre in the D.B. WeldonLibrary, where he is able to liaise closelywith staff in that Centre. Tom previouslyheld a position as a Reference andInstruction Librarian at Weldon Library.

In April, Kim Cornell started a two-yearappointment at UWO with subjectresponsibility for Chemistry, Physics andAstronomy, Earth Sciences, and ChemicalEngineering. Kim comes to Western afterseveral years of working in the corporateenvironment for Ontario PowerGeneration Inc. in Toronto. Kim holds aB.Sc. in Chemistry and an MLS fromWestern.

Library Technical Services welcomedCary Daniel in the early summer for atwo-year appointment. Cary has a strongbackground in cataloguing and consider-able experience in foreign languages andsciences, which he used extensively atOCLC where he was involved in contractcataloguing for various libraries. In addi-tion to cataloguing, Cary will also be pro-viding support to Research andInstructional Services in the D.B. WeldonLibrary.

Selinda Berg joined the Allyn & BettyTaylor Library staff in May in a two-yearappointment as the Nursing Librarian.Selinda came to Western from Edmontonwhere she had just completed a practicumat the J.W. Scott Health Sciences Library.Selinda has a B.Sc. in Nutrition from theUniversity of Saskatchewan and an MLISfrom the University of Alberta.

In June, Catherine Morrisey accepted theposition of Head, Resource SupportServices for the D.B. Weldon Library.Catherine has been working in an acting

Courtney Waugh was the successful candidatefor the professional librarian position withresponsibilities for Anthropology/Psychologyin the D.B. Weldon Library. Courtney has asolid background in Anthropology, havingcompleted a B.A. in Anthropology at theUniversity of North Carolina and an M.A. inAnthropology at the University of Arkansas.Courtney also has an MLIS from Western.Her work experience includes a co-op place-ment in Research and Instructional Services,and more recently a temporary position as amember of the Government Publications proj-ect team in the Weldon Library.

In August, Melanie Burnard assumed the newrole of English/Outreach Librarian in the D.B.Weldon Library. Melanie has a B.A. inEnglish Language and Literature as well as anMLIS from Western. Melanie has worked invarious capacities over the last two years as a

co-op student/casual assistant in the BusinessLibrary, and most recently as a ReferenceAssistant in the Education Library.

University of WindsorThere are several shiny new people at TheLeddy Library. There is Jennifer Soutter, ournew Digital Services Librarian; Anne Kaay,our new Social Sciences Librarian; JonathanMakepeace, our new Bibliographic ServicesLibrarian; and Alexander Affleck who is ourPublic Services Librarian for a 12-month lim-ited term appointment.

York UniversityYork welcomed a number of staff over thesummer: In July, Michael Moir joined York'sArchives and Special Collections asUniversity Archivist. In August, theReference Department of the Scott Libraryfilled two permanent positions, ThumekaMgwigwi (Reference Librarian) and LisaSloniowski (Reference Librarian &Information Literacy ProgramCoordinator), and two contract positions,Norda Bell Majekodunmi and Adam Taves(also Reference Librarians). Michael Ridley named Chief Information Officer,University of Guelph

University of Guelph Chief Librarian Michael Ridley has accepted the new role of ChiefInformation Officer (CIO) for the University. The newly-created position of CIO reports to theprovost and is responsible for the overall strategy and policy administration of the University'sinformation technology, information services and information resources.

Ridley will continue to be responsible for the administration of the library as Chief Librarian.Through the role of CIO, he takes on the administration of the University’s Computing andCommunications Services department.

“This new position will enable the University to bring together the vision, leadership and advo-cacy for the development and use of information systems and information technology,” Provostand Vice-president (Academic) Maureen Mancuso said. “It will further our academic mission inthis important area.”
