our daily life, and yet most of the times we fail to notice it. Even the tiny toddlers of C U Shah Preparatory school contributed with their seven projects in this humongous venture. All the projects that the students presented in the fair, exceeded the expectations of the visitors. The lucid explanation of some complicated projects left a long lasting effect on the visitors’ minds.

Apart from all these projects, one of the attractions of the science fair was the juxtaposition of science and entertainment. Students performed a play on the theme of environmental conservation, there was a puppet show on education and a magic show to abolish superstitions from society. Also, Natansh Vyas, a student of class X presented an animation of 22 different types of math projects in a single show. He also presented some extremely interesting math puzzles in quite an impressive manner. All these techniques gave people a new outlook towards the merits of science and also proved an eye opener to many students, parents and even teachers of science. This was the place where everybody learned something, and left with a number of

innovative ideas of learning science.

The science fair was originally the idea of Shri Bhalchandra Joshi, and the idea was executed quite astonishingly

by the principals, teachers, students and parents. Once again, to quote A P J Abdul Kalam, “History has proven that those who dare to imagine the impossible are the ones who

break all human limitations. In every field of human endeavor, whether science, medicine, sports, the arts, or technology, the names of the people who imagined the impossible and

achieved are engraved in our history. By breaking the limits of their imagination, they changed the world.” The Genius Minds of GLS are all set to change the world.

Playing an instrument or participating in a music program in school has been shown to have broad positive effects on learning, motivation and

behavior.

Music activities prepare the brain for more difficult tasks and are a tool to help wire the brain to reach higher level of thinking.

To motivate and encourage the children to play

musical instruments for the first time in K.N.Primary school, a competition was organized. It became a memorable event as the children came out with flying colors.

PREPARING FOR SPACE – JOURNEY

N. R. Primary school organized a Rocket making workshop on

17th January 2014 in the school premises.

It was conducted by scientists Shri. M. P. Deomurari a retired scientist of Physical Research Laboratory associated with Model Rocketry for 35 years. He was accompanied with Shri. H. R. Sisodia from Vikram Sarabhai community centre, presently working with Gujarat Vidhyapith and Shri. Neel Shah a student of B. E.

Computer. This innovative idea was visualized by Shri. Deven Rathore Principal of M. K. Secondary & Higher

Secondary School. Shri. M. P. Deomurari interacted with the students by asking them questions about space and

forces acting in the space with some practical examples. He drew a rocket diagram and explained its parts and

functions. A demo on making the rocket was given.

Around 44 students participated and made individual rockets under their expert guidance. It was exciting to watch the rocket launching on the inauguration day of the Science Fair on 23rd January by our respected Sir, Shri. Sudhirbhai Nanavati. The remaining rockets were launched safely by the students themselves on 29th January G.L.S. grounds amidst excitement and cheers. We all learnt a lot and enjoyed the experience thoroughly.

FAIR OF THE SCIENTIFIC KINDScience surrounds us….is the reason for the progress of mankind…science has taken us to the moon, has made communication possible with far-flunged loved ones. Yet, we stop ourselves from unraveling its’ mysteries. A career in pure sciences and scientific research is yet to gain popularity. All the schools under the GLS umbrella came together and unitedly worked towards making

science more appealing and simple to their students. A Science Fair was jointly organized on the GLS ground on Jan 23 and 24. The fair had students explaining scientific principles and mysteries using models. More than 10,000 visitors visited this fair over the two days!!!Congratulations to all the principals, teachers, staff members and students of all the schools for

taking such an initiative and making it a huge success.

Chocolate Walnut Fudge

Ingredients•Dark chocolate 100 grams•Walnuts, finely chopped 1 / 2 cup•Unsalted butter 4 tablespoons•Condensed milk 400 grams• mawa 180 grams•Vanilla essence 1/2 teaspoon

MethodGrease a seven-inch square

aluminum tray.Heat a non-stick pan; add

the butter and allow it to melt. Add the chocolate and stir till it

melts. Stir in the condensed milk and cook for five to six minutes.

Add the walnuts to the pan and mix. Add the mawa, and vanilla essence, and mix well.

Transfer the mixture onto the greased tray and spread evenly with a greased spatula. Cool in the refrigerator before cutting into pieces. Serve chilled.

Eggless Mango Cheesecake

Ingredients:Cream cheese - 1 block Cream - 170 gm Sugar - Half a cup Mango puree - 3/4 of a cupGelatine - 1 Tbsp (optional)Hot Water - 1/4 cupGraham cracker crumbs/

Mari biscuit powder - 1.5 to 2

cups (Depending on how thick you want the base to be)

Unsalted butter, melted - 75

gm (about 1/3 of a cup)

1. Whiz the graham crackers/Mari biscuits in a food processor. Add melted butter and whiz again until the mixture comes together. Press into the bottom of an 8” spring form pan that’s lined with aluminum foil or use individual glasses. Refrigerate while preparing the rest of the cheesecake.

2. Mix the cream cheese, cream, and

sugar in a bowl until well combined. You can do it by hand or use low speed on your

Kitchenaid. An electric beater is not needed.

3. Add the gelatine to the hot water and stir till it completely dissolves. Add the mango puree and stir well. Keep half of this mixture aside and add the rest to the cream cheese mixture. Stir gently until well combined.

4. Pour on top of the graham cracker/mari nisuit base. Return to fridge for another 10-30 mins.

5. Pour the mango mixture as the third layer. Do this gently so that the layers don’t combine. If you use a springform pan, the top layer will be much thinner, as it should be.

6. Refrigerate overnight and get ready to serve a yummy dessert at your party that can be prepared well in advance!

BOOK

Krishna Chari-traBy Bankim Chandra ChattopadhyayaTranslated by Alo Shome

By Jean Dsouza

In times when so many divine figures and legends are fictionalized, televised

and made into films, laying my hands on this book felt like a breath of fresh air. Krishna Charitra is a famous Bengali classis where Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya endeavours to discover Shri Krishna, the real person, behind centuries of myths and legends. But the difference here is that the author makes every attempt at researching,

probing and unraveling the literature available at the time. It is not merely hearsay or grandmother’s stories that we have in this book. It is a well researched, authenticated and referenced work, blended with the author’s passion for Shri Krishna, and the passion for Indian culture.

As Chattopadhyaya says himself, the book was originally written with a feeling of patriotism, and the desire to uphold Shri Krishna as not just a mythological figure, but an ideal Indian character, whom other Indians could look up to. Writing about this work, Sri Aurobindo states: “Bankim Chandra pored over the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas striving to catch

the deeper ad sacred sense of those profound writings. To give that to his countrymen was the strenuous aim of Krishna Charitra.”

Describing Krishna Charitra, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya writes: “The establishment of Krishna’s divinity is not the aim of this book. It is the discussion of his human nature which is my intention. I myself believe in his divinity; that faith, too, I have not concealed. But I have taken no pains for persuading the reader to subscribe to that belief.”

In most cases, the interpretations of the incidents of Krishna’s life have been an

eye-opener for me. The popular belief is placed vis-à-vis historical evidence, showing the origin of certain

Hindu thought processes at some places, and commenting on the inappropriateness of it at other times.

I would recommend this book not only to devotees of Lord Krishna, but more so to students who are involved in research and thesis-writing. This is how research ought to be done. This is how we ought to think.

The translation has faulty grammar in some places, but all in all, it is not so bad.

I have found a new respect and reverence for Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya through this book.

Commercial Communication at HACC)

RaincoatDirected by: Rituparno GhoshStarring: Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai

Released in 2004, Raincoat is a Hindi film directed by the late

Rituparno Ghosh. It tells the story of two lovers (played by Aishwarya and Ajay) separated by destiny, who meet again one day. This meeting allows each to realize the truth about the lives they are living. It is an adaptation of the short story The Gift of the Magi (1906) by

O Henry. The story begins with

unemployed Manu (Ajay Devgan), in search of money to finance his new business as he has lost his earlier job at a jute mill. On his quest, he visits Neeru (Aishwarya Rai) in Calcutta, to whom he was engaged six years ago. During the rainy evening, the couple reminisce about their former love and how each ended up in their current situation.

Neeru pretends to lead a happy and prosperous life. They go on talking about their past and present with multiple flashbacks.

The raincoat comes to play when Neeru wears it to go out and fetch some food. The landlord (Annu Kapoor) speaks of the real situation of the household, and prompts Manu to give his borrowed money as rent for the house. Manu leaves

a letter under the bed sheet explaining things. When Neeru returns he does not say anything about his encounter with her landlord. After some time Manu leaves. Later, when he puts his hand inside the pocket of his raincoat, he finds

a pair of gold bangles that belonged to Neeru, along with a letter saying that she had a lot of money and he should have told her about his financial situation. She had actually read a letter that was inside the

raincoat that informed her about Manu’s condition.

This movie is a narrative with just two characters in most of the frames. Shot in 17 days, Raincoat performed well at the Box Office and turned out to be a success. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and was nominated for the Crystal Globe for Best Feature Film at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Aishwarya Rai also won the Zee Cine Award for Critics’ Choice Best Actress and was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance.
