im McDermottwas only 23 years old when sheunderwent bariatric surgery, but her weight had already peaked at 300 pounds. She was desperate to get back

to the active life she had led before her metabolic disease and obesity.

“Everything I tried didn’t work,” Kim said of her efforts to lose weight before surgery. “Finally I did someresearch and was referred to Dr.Andrew Averbach by a friend. Iliked him right away,” she said.

Like all patients consideringweight loss surgery, Kim wasrequired to attend an educational seminar hosted by Saint Agnes, and also did her own research onthe surgical options available toher. She relied on Dr. Averbach for guidance as well. “I was scared, but he made me feel comfortableand answered my questions.”

Kim said that she appreciatedhow informative Dr. Averbach was, and after learning about her bariatricoptions she decided to undergo a sleeve gastrectomy. During thisprocedure, Dr. Averbach removedpart of the stomach, thus restrictingthe amount of food that could beconsumed. The advantage of theprocedure is that normal continuity

of the gastrointestinal tract ispreserved, while the capacity of the stomach to hold food is drastically reduced by 80 to 90 percent.

Saint Agnes is a leader inMaryland for weight loss surgery, with our surgeons performing more bariatric procedures than any other hospital in the state. In addition to the sleeve gastrectomy, Saint Agnes also offers gastric bypass, usingthe daVinci robotic surgery system when appropriate, as well as gastric banding. In December 2009, her first month after surgery, Kim lost 40 pounds – and went on to lose more than 140 pounds, going from a size 24 to a size 6. Now, she hasreturned to the softball field whichshe loved as a teenager.

“I am shocked,” she said, “I have never been this small!”

Kim credits the bariatric team at Saint Agnes, including a nutritionist, with helping her learn to eat rightand exercise properly so she could keep the weight off. “I used to eat anything, and now I know betterabout how to eat well,” she said.

Her experience was so good, in fact, that she has convinced some of her closest family and friends to

undergo the procedure themselves. “When I look at my life now I seea 180 degree difference in how Ifeel,” said Kim. “I used to comehome and lay on the couch, andnow I am always on the go. Myadvice to anyone thinking aboutit is: Don’t wait!”

or years, Patricia contemplated having cosmetic surgery.

The mother of two wanted to improve her appearance with a breast reduction and tummy tuck, but it wasn’t until she met

Dr. G. Thomas Grace, chief of plastic andreconstructive surgery at Saint AgnesHospital, that she decided to take action. His outstanding reputation as a plastic surgeon and his wonderful bedside manner made her final decision easy, she said. “Now, I don’t know why I waited so long,” she said. “I’m happy with the results. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Institute atSaint Agnes Hospital helps patients like Patricia achievethe look they want and feel their best with a range of cosmetic procedures, including breast enlargement and reduction, face lifts, abdominoplasty (known as a tummy tuck), liposuction, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and skin care treatments like laser surgery and Botox.

The Institute ensures patients have access to the latest and technology and innovations in the field. In addition, board-certified plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists and operating room nurses takea team approach with every surgery.

“We are patient safety oriented,” Dr. Grace said, “When you have the same team working with youevery day, it ensures patient safety first and foremostin everything we do.”

Patricia said staff members did everything they could to make her stay at Saint Agnes a pleasant one. “Not only does the cosmetic surgery team make you feel warm and welcome. They also make you feel so comfortable,” she said. “They made me feel beautiful before and after.”

F Renew You with Cosmetic Surgery by Allison Eatough

While many patients have cosmetic procedures performed at Saint Agnes, some are able to have less invasive, outpatient procedures such as short scar facelifts and Botox injections done inside their surgeon’s office. Kelly, mid- 50s, recently had a short scar facelift in Dr. Grace’s office to help reduce smile lines. As opposed to a normal facelift, the short scar facelift reduces the size of the scars and potential scar tissue that may form behind the ears and in the hairline thus making the scars easier to camouflage with existing hair. The short scar facelift takesless time, and has fewer complications and a faster recovery, than atraditional facelift. Kelly said she is thrilled with the results. “I had a very easy and quick recovery,” Kelly said. “It just made the biggestdifference. I would recommend it to anybody.”

BOTOX© Cosmetic Botox© Cosmetic is an FDA approved treatment which is injected into the muscles which cause frown lines between the brows. After the injections, you will notice improvement in these frown lines within days and the results can last up to 4 months. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed.

Juvederm®Juvederm® is also an FDA approved hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. This smooth consistency gel helps add volume and hydration to your face. Juvederm® is most commonly used to treat your smile lines. This injectable process takes about 15 minutes to complete, results can be immediate and lasts up to 1 year.

Restylane®Restylane® is another type of hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. Like otherhyaluronic dermal fillers, Restylane® is free from animal proteins, which eliminate risks of allergic reactions. It is most commonly used to improve facial wrinkles and folds. It will keep your skin looking young and restore its natural fullness. This filler is non-surgical, well tolerated and lasts up to six months.

Radiesse®Radiesse® is a calcium hydroxyapatite filler that is considered an injectable implant for the improvement of soft tis-sue loss with aging or improvement in contours of the cheeks, nose or chin. It is made from a substance that is identical to what is naturally found in the body.

Results are immediate and may last as long as 18 months.

Non-Ablative LaserThe Cutera Nd: YAG laser and IPL system is useful in improving the general texture and color of the skin and is able to treat prominent blood vessels, age/sun spots, and remove unwanted hair.

Chemical PeelsWhen skin care products alone are not enough, incorporating a chemical peel may be reccomended for improvement in color, texture, fine lines, and even problem acne. Chemical peels do require a short recovery time but the result willbe a brighter, more even complexion.

Skin CareSometimes looking good and feeling better only requires a simpler, non-surgical solution. The Plastic &Reconstructive Institute and Saint Agnes offers a variety of other options for skin care and rejuvenation.

Skiing is a big part of life inVermont for the Chase family. “It’s in our genes. It’s in our lives. I like to be with the kids,” Tom says. One of his three daughters was a competitive acrobatic skier and his son is a ski racer. Three of Tom’s nine grandchildren are ski racers, including a 12-year-old whom Tom describes as “pre-Olympic level.”

n March 2011, 70-year-oldTom Chase of Burlington, Vermont underwent alengthy back surgery at Saint Agnes Hospital. Today, the Construction Company CEO rides his bike for 20 miles

twice a week, can run a half mile on soft surfaces and skis in the beautiful countryside of Vermont.

Dr. Raymond Haroun, directorof Spine Surgery at the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute at Saint Agnes, performed the surgical procedures which ended years of back pain for Tom, and have allowed him to reclaim a lifetime of activity and exciting, though sometimes hazardous, pursuits.

Tom grew up on a farm, where he says he and his family members “worked like machines from anearly age.” He was a student-athlete, enjoying soccer and basketball. He raced stock-modified cars forthe International Motor SportsAssociation in the mid-1980s,where he was involved in a few crashes on the track. Tom wasalso a skier with a fondness forchallenging courses.

A Changed Man By the time Tom came to Dr. Haroun in 2011, he had debilitating pain and was often unable to sleep. “I couldn’t continue on as I was,” Tom recalls. The level of medication he neededto take worried him.

It impacted Tom’s professional life in his job as CEO for a construction firm. He couldn’t sit comfortablyand was often agitated. Now,coworkers tell him he is “a different person,” Tom said.

Tom had spent years supporting his wife as she battled ovarian cancer. When she passed away Tom began to address his own health concerns.

Tom was referred to Dr. Harounby a colleague in Pennsylvania, and when he visited him in Baltimore in November 2010, the surgeon outlined the proposed treatment. “He had a very good level of experience,” Tom said. “I decided that he was the man…to get close to my spinal column.”

Tom’s complex back injuriesincluded stenosis (compression ofspinal nerves), spondylolisthesis(protrusion of vertebrae towardthe stomach, restricting the spinalcolumn) and calcium deposits dueto injury and age. His surgeryinvolved the lower lumbar vertebraeas and well as the top sacral vertebra.

Dr. Haroun performed adecompression and fusion torelieve the pain and restore stability. Dr. Haroun notes that the surgeon’sjudgment in determining who is a good candidate for these types ofprocedures is key. In Tom’s case, Haroun felt that “everythingcorrelated,” enabling him topinpoint the problem area andcorrect it successfully.

A Dedicated Team Tom was discharged from Saint Agnes five days post-operatively, and stayedin the area another week beforereturning home to Vermont. He says that follow-up x-rays confirmed thefusion process was “very solid.”

For such a complex procedure and recovery, Dr. Haroun appreciates the support of his professional colleagues at Saint Agnes. Members of the“dedicated spine team” at the hospital“really come together to providespecific support” for patients withback or neck surgery, accordingto Haroun.

After his surgery, Tom says heavoids moguls on the ski slopes. But with the help of a protective Kevlarform custom-designed by a trainerfrom the U.S. Olympic ski team, he can enjoy downhill skiing without worry.

He has regained his strength and activity level, and has lost much ofhis pain. “I think Dr. Haroun is just an amazing surgeon and technician,” Tom noted. “My experience at Saint Agnes was very positive. I had very good care.”

he Saint Agnes Cancer Institute is known forits renowned team ofphysicians, innovative treatment therapies and

multidisciplinary approach to each patient’s plan. As demand for these sought after teams and services has increased dramatically through the years, so has the need for a moreaccommodating space. In March 2013, the face of the Cancer Institute will change, as will the experiencespatients have throughout theirjourney. The new Cancer Institutewill expand by 40 percent and the physical space will now match the

exemplary care forwhich the Institute has become known.

“We are extremely proud of the new space and honored to be able to offer our patients the very best,” said Dr. Carole Miller, director of the Cancer Institute. “The spacehas large windows that let ample, natural light into the advancedand comforting infusion center which overlooks a garden, specificallydesigned to provide a healing and soothing environment for ourpatients. Chemotherapy is difficult

on the patient, so receiving treatmentin an areawith plenty

of windows overlooking a

making the treatments a little more comfortable” she adds.

The new building also includes space for workshops and classes; a hallmarkof the Saint Agnes Cancer Institute, created to support not only thepatients, but the families alike. Growing to Better Serve our Patients

The new building located on the Saint Agnes campus isn’t just any medical office building, but a multidisciplinary facility with open space and modern technology designed to provide a healing environment to support patients. The building, which will open in March 2013, is part of Saint Agnes’ long-term $200 million campus expansion project, and will be home to physicians from a variety ofspecialties such as cancer, cardiovascular, orthopaedics, bariatrics and more.

A comprehensive approach to patient-centered care Staying in line with Saint Agnes’s commitment throughout their expansion, input from both patients and physicians was taken into account every step of the design process, ensuring a space that provides the best in healthcare.

Throughout the development of the building, planners held focus groups to find out what patients felt was important in terms of services and space. Every aspect of the new buildinghas been designed with the patient in mind; free parking, welcoming family spaces, easy access to the hospital, a healing environment, and so much more. In the case of infusion, the planners discovered that some patients liked the camaraderie of a large infusion center, while others preferred privacy. The expanded Cancer Institute therefore includes private infusion areas as well as open space.

Connected directly to the hospital on two levels, the new building will make doctor’s visits to patient rooms more convenient and accessible, and the pleasant, contemporary space aims to enhance patient experiences.

“It’s fully designed for the way health care is delivered today,” says William Greskovich, vice president of operations and capital projects for Saint Agnes. “The efficient layout is easy for patients to navigate and better for providing quality care.”

eart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the United States, affecting

one out of every two women. SaintAgnes Hospital is on a mission to change those statistics.

Recognized as a local and regional leader in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease, the Cardiovascular Institute at SaintAgnes Hospital has unveiled a newarray of services specifically tailoredfor women, with the opening ofThe Women’s Heart Center.

The Center has new programs in place to help patients take control and improve their overall cardiovascular wellness, such as the “60 Minute Heart Check.” While symptoms of early heart disease are often difficult to identify, especially in women, there

are a number of risk factors that can be regulated and controlled to prevent the developmentor progressionof the condition. Understanding these risk factors and how lifestyle changes will improve overall cardiovascular health, is an important first step to fighting this disease.

“We work one-on-one with eachpatient to assess personal risk factors and determine what steps can betaken to improve heart health,”described Paula Guarante, Certified Cardiovascular Nurse at Saint Agnes. “By evaluating blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levelsand EKG results, we can put the

right preventative measures inplace. The Women’s Heart Centeris committed to helping our patients get healthy and stay healthy.”

Furthering its commitment tothe community and cardiovascular health, Saint Agnes Hospital willonce again partner with various local churches in February to celebrate Red Dress Sunday. This program was initially established in 2005 by Saint Agnes and community partners toraise awareness about the prevalenceof heart disease among AfricanAmerican women, involving church congregations throughout the regionto dedicate one Sunday in Februaryto heart health education and while donning attire.

Knowing that one single day a year was not enough, Saint Agnes through the Women’s Heart Center is spreading its commitment to raising awareness throughout the year.
