Bertolt Brecht Questions from A Worker Who Reads Who built Thebes of the seven gates? In the books you will find the name of kings. Did the kings haul up the lumps of rock? And Babylon, many times demolished. Who raised it up so many times? In what houses Of gold-glittering Lima did the builders live? Where, the evening that the Wall of China was finished Did the masons go? Great Rome Is full of triumphal arches. Who erected them? Over whom Did the Caesars triumph? Had Byzantium, much praised in song, Only palaces for its inhabitants? Even in fabled Atlantis The night the ocean engulfed it The drowning still bawled for their slaves. The young Alexander conquered India. Was he alone? Caesar beat the Gauls. Did he not have even a cook with him? Philip of Spain wept when his armada Went down. Was he the only one to weep? Frederick the Second won the Seven Years' War. Who Else won it? Every page a victory. Who cooked the feast for the victors? Every ten years a great man. Who paid the bill? So many reports. So many questions. ("Fragen eines lesenden Arbeiters" - translated by M. Hamburger from Bertolt Brecht, Poems 1913-1956, Methuen, N.Y., London, 1976 )

Well done and Thank you Club President.—Wayne Schulz

August’s BIRTHSTONE

4

Peridot was regarded since ancient times as the symbol of the sun. The Greeks believed that it brought royal dignity upon its wearer. During the Middle Ages, peridot was pierced, then strung on the hair of an ass and attached to the left arm to ward off evil spirits. The Crusad-ers thought that peridots were emeralds, and brought them back to Europe where they were featured as ornaments in churches.

Peridot is a gem-quality transparent variety of olivine, a mineral com-posed of magnesium-iron silicates. The color of olivine ranges from olive to lime green, sometimes with a brownish tinge. The green color is due to the presence of iron, while the brownish tinge indicates a higher iron content. Some of the finest peridot stones are called “evening emeralds” because they appear greener under artificial light.

Sardonyx is a variety of the silica mineral called chalcedony. This sort of min-eral contains translucent or opaque layers of tiny quartz fibers which are stacked on top of each other to give a banded appearance. Sardonyx stones usually contain white and brownish-red bands. The word Sar-donyx is derived from the Greek, Sard meaning “reddish brown,” and onyx mean-ing “veined gem.” Roman soldiers wore sardonyx talismans engraved with heroes such as Hercules

or Mars, god of war: they believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and dar-ing as the figured carved on it, and that it would also guard them from evil and bring good fortune. During the Renaissance, sardonyx was believed to bring eloquence to the wearer and was highly valued by public speakers and orators. Cameos and intaglios are often carved from Sardonyx. Cameos are figures carved on a stone, where the white layer appears as relief and the coloured layer is the background. Intaglios are the reverse of cameos: they are incised figures on the stone, where the stone is carved through the dark layer to reveal the light layer. Sardonyx is a relatively common and inexpensive gemstone. It was a favourite gemstone in ancient times, popular not only because it was attractive, but also because it was widely available and therefore - Unlike most rare gemstones that could only be bought with the wealth of royalty and nobility - sardonyx could be obtained by many less-wealthy people.

August Birthstone poem - "Wear a Peridot or for thee,

No conjugal fidelity, The August born without this stone, `Tis said, must live unloved; alone."

Parmesan Cheese Bread

INGREDIENTS

• Butter or margarine

Parmesan Cheese—finely grated

Thick white bread—café slice

STEPS • In a bowl, mix equal parts butter or margarine with the parmesan cheese to create a paste. • Spread the paste on one side of the bread. • In a non stick fry-pan , fry the bread paste side down over a medium heat until golden brown while resting a flat butter/side plate (upside down) or lid on top so the bread steams.

This is a big hit with the grand kids., it’s also great to serve with soup. If your palate likes it a bit spicier ad some chili fakes to the parmesan mixture
