07/03/14 Middlebury, CT -725 Breakneck Hill
Rd
A late afternoon fire consumes a large home at 725 Breakneck Hill Rd
in Middlebury. The almost 11000 sq foot structure was almost a mile of
the main road was completely destroyed by a massive fire which
would have fire fighters wetting down hotspots until mid day the fol-
lowing day. Fire fighters from Middlebury were assisted by Water-
town, Waterbury, Woodbury, and Southbury, as well as the Tanker
Task Force for Litchfield and New Haven Counties. The fire which ap-
peared to have started in the rear right corner of the sprawling home
would prove difficult to get at with huge attic spaces and slate tile roof
and would end up moving through the attic space and consuming the
whole home. Operations also had to be halted do to the danger posed
by severe thunderstorms which moved through the area several hours
into the incident. All the occupants of the home at the time the fire
broke out escaped without injury.

07/08/14 Bethlehem, CT - 28 Aucient Oak Rd. -
Bethlehem Volunteers were called for a fully involved
house fire on 29 Aucient Oak Rd just before 5am. A jogger
running on the street spotted the well involved structure
and reported the fire. Upon arrival crews found a well in-
volved 2 and a half story wood frame on the verge of col-
lapse. A water source was established from the pond on the
property and mutual aid for manpower and tankers was
requested from Watertown, Morris, Washington, and
Woodbury. Crews used a defensive attack since the struc-
ture was so far gone on arrival and were able to keep it out
of the two car attached garage as well as the adjacent barn
and storage buildings on the property.

07/12/14 Thomaston, CT - 350 Hill Rd. - Call came in
for a possible basement fire. The police officer who ar-
rived on scene reported a working fire. By the time the
first fire apparatus arrived the 2.5 story house built in the
1800's was fully involved. There were reports of ammuni-
tion going off in the building initially as well as a release
of a propane tank in the basement and a breech in the
heating oil tank which probably fueled the fire as well. A
water source was set up quickly and attack line stretched
as well as opening the monitor on Engine 10 and the Har-
winton mutual aid Engine. A tanker shuttle was estab-
lished using Terryville, Northfield, and Harwinton mutual
aid tankers along with Thomaston's Tanker. With build-
ing so well involved prior to arrival it was a total loss with
the structure eventually collapsing. An excavator was
brought in to pull the debris part for the final wet down.
The DEEP and State Fire Marshal were on the scene to
investigate the scene and help contain the fuel oil spill
from the breached tank.
