And wonderful things are happening daily at SOSD, thanks to our amazing athletes, family members, volunteers, donors, board and staff.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day
The 6th annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day, to be held
on Saturday, September 26, 2015, will continue to celebrate the
theme of "Play Unified to Live Unified.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is an annual celebration of her life and an invitation
for everyone to "Play Unified to Live Unified!" This global call to action stems from
Mrs. Shriver's teaching that on the playing field, we forget about our differences
and recognize our mutual humanity. On EKS Day, we invite you to join us in playing
unified and teaching the world to live unified. We are demonstrating Eunice Kenne-
dy Shriver's enduring vision by calling upon athletes, families and friends to come
together in a day of inclusive sport and play.
Visit www.eksday.org and www.eunicekennedyshirver.org to learn more.
Welcome, Wendy Addington, to the SOSD Board of Director!

What: State Winter Games
When: February 3 & 4, 2015
Where: Terry Peak, Lead
After losing our 2014 State
Winter Games to inclement
weather, we were back and
better then ever in 2015.
Thirty-eight athletes repre-
senting six delegations cut
some wicked edges and threw
down some fast times.
Thank you to these folks for
all of your hard work… much
appreciated!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH DAKOTA
M arch 4, 2015 marked the 5th
year SOSD has sponsored
‘Spread The Word To End
The Word’ activities and programs
across the state.
The goal of this Special Olympics initia-
tive is to educate the public regarding
the casual use of the hurtful and de-
grading word ‘retarded’ while encour-
aging adults, teens and children alike
to take the pledge to stop using the
word ‘retarded’, and to help promote
the new R-word: RESPECT.
Seventy four schools and a number of
businesses displayed posters, hung
banners and distributed bracelets pro-
vided free of charge by SOSD. The
impact of this program is illustrated
through these participant comments:
Many students were excited to take
the pledge and remembered it from
last year. Kristin Trygstad - Teacher
(Elkton)
I had 23 junior kindergardeners who all
had to “pinky swear” they would never
use the R-word! To see what that little
promise meant to kids and their guar-
antee they would not use such a hurt-
ful word definitely made me see how
great this program was. I did have one
sad story though… I had a 1st grader
tell me that her mom calls her the R-
word all the time. I apologized for her
mom and after a little chat, I sent a
leaflet home with her to talk to her
parents about how hurtful the use of
that word is to her and to many others.
Samantha Himley – Teacher (Medary
Elementary, Brookings)
I have been doing STWTETW in my
school and community since my 8th
grade year and I am pleased with the
results and I know for sure in the High
School the R-Word has been almost
completely eliminated. I have one
more year left of taking part in this
great campaign and I hope by the time
I graduate next year, the R-word can be
completely eliminated from people’s
vocabulary in my school. But if not, I
hope someone else will be willing to
take on the project and continue to
spread the word! Paige Cordell - Stu-
dent (Gettysburg High School)
The Spread The Word To End The Word
campaign has become an expectation
at Meade School District…It is so well
received! I conducted the campaign
this year at the middle school with 450
students. Students often said, “Oh yea,
I remember this from last year!” An-
other student said, “I still have my mag-
net in my locker that you gave me last
year!” As a student signed the banner,
she asked if she could have a second
bracelet. She then pulled up her
sleeve and on her arm was last year’s
bracelet. It was ratty, quite dirty, and
worn—it had obviously been on her
wrist for 365 day! I gave her a handful
of bracelets this time! Chrissy Peter-
son - Special Serviced Director (Meade
School District)
W e would like to extend a huge thank you to the amazing artisans
who again blessed us with their beautifully constructed scarves and other winter wears. Over 772 pieces were distribut-ed to athletes, coaches and supports during our 2015 State Basketball Tournament in Pierre. Our supporters reside in 20* U.S. States and 16** South Dakota communities. *CA, CT, FL, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NY, OH, SD, TX, WI, WV **Big Stone City, Corsica, Dell Rapids, Hurley, Huron, Mari-on, Mitchell, Parker, Rapid City, Renner, Sioux Falls, Sturgis, Volga, Wagner, Waubay and Yankton.
The Scarf Project
began as an oppor-
tunity to provide a
gift of welcome to
the athletes of the
2009 Special Olym-
pics World Winter
Games held in Boise,
Idaho. It was hoped
2,100 scarves would
be donated so each
participating athlete would have one. By Games time, near-
ly 60,000 homemade scarves were produced from every
state in the U.S. and 12 countries around the world.
We are pleased to announce our participation
in the 2016 Scarf Project. Our colors are as
shown. We are not overly concerned with
“exact” colors. Anything close to these are
perfectly fine.
Goal: 700
Colors: Light Blue and Buff/Tan
Due: February 26, 2016
Without the dedication and expertise of these amazing volunteers, this important message would not have reached almost 28,000 South Dakota students.
THANK YOU! Julie Briggs

Look for the next STWTETW day coming

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH DAKOTA
The Unified Relay Across America (URAA)
travelled through South Dakota June 20 - 23.
The Relay participants carried the Flame of
Hope through the cities of Watertown,
Brookings, Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City.
The Flame of Hope was lit in Athens, Greece
and travelled to the United States where it
was split into three routes. The URAA began
on May 26 and traveled west, hitting all 50
states. At the conclusion of the Unified Relay,
the Flame of Hope was handed over to the
2015 Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Spe-
cial Olympics Final Leg Team. It will travel for
13 days to more than 120 cities and towns
throughout California, honoring the spirit of
the Special Olympics global movement and
delivering a message of hope to communities
where people with intellectual disabilities
continue to fight for acceptance and inclu-
sion.
Over $25,000 was raised for the URAA by
South Dakota participants. Throughout the
four days the Flame of Hope was carried
across the state, approximately 200 partici-
pants helped carry the torch.
Thank you to everyone who participated,
fundraised, donated and supported the Uni-
fied Relay Across America! This was a once in
a lifetime opportunity and we are so proud of
the participation and support from South
Dakota!
Unified Relay Across America
Heroes Behind The Badge This annual holiday blood drive is a friendly
competition between the Sioux Falls Fire
Rescue and Sioux Falls Police Department
to see who can recruit the most blood do-
nors. Congratulations to Fire Rescue for
winning this years contest!
As their charity of choice for the Police
Dept., a donation of $150 was made to
SOSD. The real winners, however, are the
folks who receive this invaluable gift of life.
Estate Planning
A re you aware of the many ways you
can give the joy and pride of Special
Olympics even when you are gone?
Leave your legacy and consider Special
Olympics in your estate planning.
Contact Darryl Nordquist, President/CEO for more information.
“I would love to help Special Olympics
athletes for many years to come.” How do you stay fit?
You have to exercise and keep exercising to
stay physically fit.
It's not good to be over weight, it's just not
good for you.
Stay away from pop, it's not really good for
you, either.
The main thing you need to do is drink lots of water and eat lots
of fruits and vegetables.
Good luck!

The Reichling Family members are no
strangers to having a big heart for those with
disabilities. Their mother, Mary Lois Reichling
started “Caring Sunday” over 30 years ago in
Watertown. Gene and Mary Lois Reichling
have 5 children, Joe, Rick, Mary Jean, Tom, &
Gary. (see photo) left to right with significant
others; Back row: Joe, Rick, Mary Jeanne,
Tom, Gary. Front row Eunice, Nam, Mavis,
Sue). The children recently donated $25,000
to Special Olympics South Dakota’s Building
Unity Capital Campaign – Unify Center. The
very generous donation was made in memory
of their mother and father.
The Caring Sunday 4-H Club in Watertown
was started by Mary Lois in 1994 to give
those with intellectual disabilities an oppor-
tunity to work together on crafts, projects
and their favorite, dancing. The club was 70
members strong, larger than most clubs in
the area, but even stronger was the mem-
bers’ positive attitude.
One of the reasons the members enjoyed the
club so much was that belonging is a funda-
mental need for all people, and this is one
place where they can feel they belong.
Best of all, though, was Reichling’s idea of
acceptance of people with disabilities, Reich-
ling said, “They’re very loving and they really
enjoy when they can put their arm around
you.”
The Reichling children wanted to follow in
their mother’s footsteps in supporting those
with disabilities. The donation is also in hon-
or of Jackie Reichling, Debra Reichling and
Kaylee Goehring-Reichling who are partici-
pants in Special Olympics. Recognition of the
Reichling donation will be displayed in the
commons of the new Unify Center where
there is plenty of room for other donors. The
Reichlings would like to challenge others to
get involved with this tremendous project.
The Unify Center will be located on the cam-
pus of the SOSD state office and will give
athletes a place to practice without compet-
ing for gym time with other sports groups.
The center will help grow current programs
across the state. The donation will also help
grow start-up programs such as Healthy Ath-
letes (free health screenings), Young Ath-
letes (children ages 2-7) and Unified Sports
(those with and without disabilities as team-
mates). Any other nonprofits in need of a
facility will be offered priority use of the Uni-
fy Center.
SOSD Receives Grant SOSD had recently been awarded a $10,000
South Dakota Community Foundation - Bush
Foundation Innovation Grant. These funds have
been earmarked to help launch Project UNIFY®
in the state.
Special Olympics Project UNIFY® is an education
and sports based strategy powered by an en-
gaged youth community that increases athletic
and leadership opportunities for students with
and without intellectual disabilities, while creat-
ing communities of acceptance for all.
According to Darryl Nordquist, “We are very ex-
cited to do more work with young people in our
state in regards to acceptance and inclusion.
These young people are our leaders of tomorrow
and I have no doubt we are in good hands.”

Modern Woodmen Supports SOSD
On March 27, 2015 Modern Wood-men Of America, in partnership with the Sioux Falls Stampede, hosted their annual Matching Funds Project. For the fifth year the proceeds from the event were donated to Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD). The event included a “Chuck a Puck” compe-tition for which the winner re-ceived $300 in Walmart gift cards and other gifts.
Dakota Beverage and Marco, Inc. also got involved by sponsoring a “Shoot for the Loot” contest.
Including the matching funds from Modern Woodmen, this event raised $11,631 for SOSD.
Thank you to everyone involved. Look for this fun event again next spring.
