Get People Smart for Better Family Communications Ever hear of Social Intelligence? It can strengthen your relationships, improve your com-munication skills, and maybe- just maybe- help you figure out what’s going on inside your teen’s head! Here is some insight on how to tap into this powerful emotional tool. Social Intelligence (SI) is the ability to recognize other people’s emotions and to use this intel to navigate relationships. It is closely related to emotional intelligence (sometimes abbreviated EQ or EI) which involves being in touch with your own feelings as well as other people’s. SI skills help most interactions, whether in-person, such as interaction with a grumpy clerk in “Customer Service” when returning an item, or virtual, like how to word an email to a touchy coworker. It is a little scary but there is a program that analyzes the “tone” of your email just in case you are not picking up on it. Different parts of the brain control our “filter” that keeps us from hurting others’ feelings or generates appropriate emotional responses to doing something good or bad. Another part of the brain produces “mirror neurons” which actually transmit a mimicking response, like wincing when some else stubs her toe. In other words, attitudes are contagious. That begs the question,” Is yours worth catching?” You might think, “Why bother?” SI plays a pivotal role in your health! Numerous studies have shown that people who are socially connected are happier, have lower blood pressure, are less susceptible to colds, and even outlive their more isolated peers due to a decrease in stress that results from SI. An increase in cortisol, which wreaks havoc with your health, is produced as a result of the stress of being pulled in different directions when you don’t have the ability to read the signs of what is going on around you. The signs of too much cortisol may be seen as weight gain, digestive issues, or a suppressed immune system. This is one more reason why empathy is so valuable. Another reason to increase your SI is that it just may be the secret ingredient to career suc-cess, too! It can give you an edge in networking, leadership skills, and team cooperation leading to higher income. Even though SI can be used with bad motives, as in the case of a narcissist’s manipulation, that person will eventually have his/her cover blown, and in the long term, the one with trust, goodwill, and a history of beneficence will win the day. Some are born with ample SI, but most others develop it. Some may have an advantage based on how they were raised, depending on whether they were told to suppress their emotions and not cry, or given permission or even encouraged to feel their feelings. There also seems to be an inverse correlation between screen time and the ability to read people. One more reason to limit electronics! Not everyone is a self-improvement junkie, and this is a busy month with a lot of demands. However, there is no better time to build better family relationships, and this is a great time and place to start Empowered Living!

Candy Kiss Peanut Butter Cookies A Christmas holiday isn't complete without this old time favorite of kids. A fun cookie to make with the little ones. They can peel the candy kisses and insert them for the last step.Ingredients:1 cup sugar1 cup brown sugar1 cup shortening1 cup peanut butter2 eggs1/4 cup milk2 tsp vanilla3 1/2 cups flour2 tsp baking soda1 tsp salt2 small bags of candy kissesInstructions: Cream sugars, shortening, peanut butter, vanilla and eggs. Set aside. Mix dry ingredients. Combine dry ingredients a little at a time while add-ing small amounts of milk to mixture. This part takes alot of stirring - mixture should be stiff when complete. Shape dough into 1" balls. Roll in sugar. Bake 8 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove from oven and quickly squish a candy kiss in center of cook-ies. Put back in oven for an additional 3 minutes. Let cool.
Christmas Spirit EggnogIngredients:4 cups milk 5 whole cloves 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 12 egg yolks 1 1/2 cups sugar 4 cups light cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions: Place a large saucepan over very low heat. Put the cinna-mon, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, cloves and milk in the sauce-pan. Heat milk about 5 minutes bringing to a boil very slowly. Whisk together egg yolks and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Egg mixture should become f luffy. Slowly whisk milk mixture into the eggs until blended well. Place egg milk mixture back into the saucepan. Being sure not to allow the mixture to boil and stirring continuously, cook mixture over medium low heat for approximately 3 minutes or until mixture thickens. Once the mixture thickens remove cloves. Let mixture set and cool for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Once mixture has cooled stir in 2 teaspoons of vanilla, cream and nutmeg. Blend well. Cover and refrigerate overnight. When ready to serve sprinkle nut-meg over the top.
Instructions:• Place the chocolate pieces and the chocolate square into a heavy saucepan.• Place the sauce pan over low heat. • Add the butter and stirring constantly melt the butter and chocolate together until smooth about 4 minutes.• Remove the pan from the heat and set aside until ready to use. • Place the eggs into a mixing bowl.• Use a fork and beat the eggs until they become frothy.• Pour in the sugar, salt and vanilla extract.• Mix until all the ingredients are incoporated together well.• Pour the melted chocolate into the mixture and stir to incorporate.• Fold in the peanuts and marshmallows.• Cover a baking sheet with wax paper.• Drop the marshmallow mixture onto the wax paper by a teaspoon about 1 in. apart.• Place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or until firm.• Store the candy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
