Meet Our Housing Case Workers
My name is Marcia Patrick and I am the Housing Coordinator for Senior Neighbors. I transitioned to this role after three years as a case manager where I assisted people in resolving personal problems and worked regularly with the Grand Rapids Senior Center. I work with a dedicated housing team, which includes two staff members in addition to my role. A full time case manager, Cornelius Hampton works with individuals who have criminal backgrounds while also doing outreach within the community. We also have another full time housing case manager, Nickole Glass who has been doing outreach at the Grand Rapids Senior Center and also participates in other community initiatives. In addition, both case managers attend Mel Trotter Ministries for weekly outreach and support. The Housing Program was created about five years ago due to the increased number of calls requesting assistance with housing. As a result, Senior Neighbors decided to develop a new program that was dedicated solely to addressing housing issues. The program was approved by the Area Agency on Aging and is funded by the Kent County Senior Millage and a Community Development Block Grant. The Housing Program is designed to assist seniors age 60 and above living in Kent County with a variety of housing issues. Over the past year we have assisted over 200 seniors. The program offers a wide range of services such as eviction prevention assistance, locating subsidized housing, discrepancies with landlords, and much more. Our program is very flexible, because we are willing to discuss any housing related problems a person has. We are continuously building relationships with private landlords, subsidized apartment complexes, area motels, housing commissions, and other agencies that assist individuals with housing needs. Our goal is to help and support all our clients in finding safe, permanent, and affordable housing. If you are in need of housing assistance, please contact me, Marcia Patrick at 616-233-0285, or email at [email protected]. You may contact our intake number for more information at 616-233-0281. Please don’t hesitate to call, even if you are not sure your question is something we can help with. We would love to aid you in any way we can.

2018 Senior Odyssey Update
First, I want to share a recap of
what happened with our 2018 Senior Odyssey
Competition. A mid-April ice storm forced us to cancel
our event on April 14th. This was a disappointment for
all involved, but a reminder that Mother Nature is
certainly full of surprises. We were fortunate to be able
to reschedule our event for May 5th. I want to give a
really big shout out to Grandville Public Schools for
being so fantastic to work with. They rescheduled
some programs on their end, so we could use the
facility on May 5th. Also, thank you to Big Belly
Catering for jumping in to cater the event at the last
minute.
With the rescheduling of the event, the season lasted
three weeks longer than we had planned, but our teams
gave it their all and didn’t get discouraged! We were
able to reschedule the event and still get six out of our
seven teams there, which was amazing!
Senior Odyssey had seven teams scheduled to
participate this year. These included: Grand Traverse
County Senior Center Network (2 teams), Walker
Firehouse Café, Sparta Senior Neighbors, Van Buren
County Senior Services, St. Alphonsus Young at Heart
Program and Manistee County Commission on Aging.
Three of these teams (St. Al, Sparta, and Manistee)
were brand new to Senior Odyssey this year!
A hearty congratulations goes out to our top three
finishers! First and Second place went to Traverse City
and Manistee came in Third place. Congratulations to
all our participants for their hard work and creativity!
Stay Safe in the Sun!
The warmer weather is coming, and it’s a good time to
remember these tips to stay safe in the sun! (These
tips are provided by www.healthfinder.gov.)
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the
United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is
the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also
cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The
good news is that skin cancer can be prevented. It can
almost always be cured when it’s found and treated
early.
Take simple steps today to protect your skin:
• Stay out of the sun as much as possible between
10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on
sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or
sweat.
• Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
• Check your skin regularly for changes.
It’s also important to be sure you are covering your
eyes to prevent sun damage.
Additionally don’t forget to stay hydrated! Drinking lots
of fluids is another important aspect to staying safe in
the sun. Water is the best choice. Teas, coffee, and
sodas may have caffeine, causing you to be
dehydrated. It is not uncommon for older adults to
become dehydrated, even in cooler months. This
makes it especially important to be sure you drink lots
of water during warm weather!
Be Well!

From the Coordinator’s Desk
Happy Independence Day to everyone as we watch our summer fly by! I hope you all are enjoying your summer and getting lots of opportunities to go outside to enjoy our beautiful weather.
We were able to get out and about around town in June and had a couple of events outside of the Center where we had a lot of fun together!
We have had a lot of new faces stopping by the Center and we hope this continues! If you know of anyone who might enjoy joining in on our fun, please invite them along with you!
We have a lot to offer seniors in this community, whether it be a fitness class, a delicious meal, a trip, or a great game of Hand & Foot. We encourage anyone to stop by and check us out! Happy 4th of July!

Coordinator’s Corner I hope you all are enjoying the summer months and making the most of them by getting outside and admiring the beautiful scenery! We went to Holland last month and had a great day there—first at Dutch Village and then by Lake Michigan in the afternoon. It is so fun to get out and go places that a lot of us do not get to very often, if ever! This month we will have our annual Senior Neighbors Picnic at Grandville High School on Friday, July 27 from 9-2pm. The theme is a 50’s Sock Hop, so I hope you will find some saddle shoes and come by the Center to get signed up for it! It costs $5.00 per person and seats on the bus will be limited, but you can carpool together too. I hope you will come and join the rest of the Senior Neighbors Centers for a fun day together! We promote the well-being of older adults with services that promote self-sufficiency, especially for those with physical, social or economic needs living in Kent County.
HAPPY 5TH OF JULY! (O.K., So our dance is on the day after the 4th.)
REMEMBER FRED ASTAIRE DANCING AROUND THE FIRE-CRACKERS IN "HOLIDAY INN"? Well Thursday the 5th will be your turn to make fireworks with your feet and pinwheels with your turns as you dance to the music of the Socialaires Band with singer Sandee Sicard from 1 to 3 P.M. at the Casino Club. Wear some red, white, and blue, and have some fun with us! To get here take Plainfield Ave. to Rupert where the stop-light is. Turn west and follow the road around to the stop sign. Continue across the street and the club will be on your left. Come on in and go to your left for the dance! A $5 admission helps us pay for the room and most days there is a 50/50 drawing too! If inclement weather or anything beyond our control cancels the dance, it is announced on WOOD TV's cancellations. If we have your phone number, we also try to call everyone. Whether dancing or just listening to the music, we love to see new people joining in with all of our regulars coming back! Thank You!
