Meet the Bridge Pastor

Grace to you, and peace, from God, our Father,

and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ ~

What a blessing it is for me to be with you here at New Hanover

Evangelical Lutheran Church (NHELC). I am glad to be able to walk

with you on the last leg of your journey to meet your new pastor. It’s

not easy having to wait, having pastors come and go, but there is a

pastor who will come to serve you here in the near future.

Let me share a little about myself as we get to know each other. I was

born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and baptized at Salem Lutheran

Church in Oberlin. Our family moved to Hialeah, Florida when I was

three. I grew up there attending public school and graduating from

Miami-Dade Junior College, as it was called at that time. I have a BA

from Florida International University in Miami and an MA from the

University of Oklahoma in Norman. Both degrees are in English. My

first career was as a college English teacher.

I then learned COBOL and Assembler and became a Computer

Programmer, and then an Analyst in Hartford, Connecticut at

Traveler’s. It was at that time that I became the Chairperson of the

New England Synod’s Christian Education Committee which oversaw

all the Campus Ministries that we supported in our synod. It was

during this time that I felt called to go to seminary.

So we packed up the household, left lucrative careers, and moved to

Gettysburg. The we being my husband, Rand, and our children Sara

and Jedediah. I graduated from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at

Gettysburg in 1994 and was ordained on August 24th, 1994. My first

call was to Elm River-Norman-Stordahl Lutheran Parish in Galesburg,

North Dakota. In the late fall of 1996 I accepted a call at St. John

Evangelical Lutheran Church

in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. I

served there for over 18 years.

Since then I have been the

Bridge Pastor at Zion

Lutheran in Flourtown, the

Bridge Pastor at St. James

Lutheran Church in Limerick,

and the Interim Pastor at

Advent Lutheran Church in

Harleysville. And now I’m

here! I hope our time together

will be one of joy and hope.

Please know that even though

I am part-time I am available

as needed by you. Please call

or e-mail if you are in need of

pastoral care. I am also avail-

able to answer questions ~ if I

know the answer.

I thank you for allowing me to

come along on your journey.

The road looks pretty sunny!

The love of God in Christ

Jesus be with you all ~

Decorate the church red for Pentecost

The church color for

Pentecost is red, signifying

the work of the Spirit and re-

minding Christians of the fire

of the Spirit. On Pentecost,

May 20th, NHELC will be

decorated with red geraniums.

You can help decorate the

church red by purchasing a

pot of three geranium plants.

The price for a pot of gerani-

ums is $18.00. If you would

like to purchase geraniums,

place your donation in an en-

velope then place it in the of-

fering plate or mail it to the

church. Be sure either the

check or envelope is marked

with “Geranium” and you

provide your name so credit

will be given toward your

church contributions. Plants

may be taken home following

the 10:15 service on May 20th

or left in the sanctuary to be

planted around the church.

Deadline to order is Sunday,

May 6th.

Then you must complete a

Facility Use Request Form

(sample to the right) and

submit it to the church office.

Copies are available on the

desk in the Welcome Center

or call the office at (610)

326-1335. Be sure to include

the expected ending time of

your meeting and provide any

exceptions to your regularly

scheduled meetings. If addi-

tional space is required, you

can use the back of the sheet.

The church calendar is

available on the web site

www.newhanoverlutheran.org

under “What’s Happening.”

Also, a printed copy of the

calendar is available on

Sundays in the Volunteers’

Office. Please do not add

your request to the calendar.

Committee chairs with regu-

larly scheduled meetings, we

want to hear from you too.

Your completed form will

help get your meetings on the

calendar to avoid potential

conflict.

Calling all musicians!

As the NHELC choirs take a

well-deserved break this sum-

mer, there will be many op-

portunities for musicians to

offer their talent during each

Sunday’s prelude and offer-

ing.

If you sing or play an instru-

ment, now is the time to start

thinking about your gift of

music and how you can use it

in church this summer. Check

the Choir Room door for the

sign-up sheet.

If you would like to present

special music and need help in

finding appropriate music,

contact Director of Music

Ministry Priscilla Landis.

Planning a meeting at the church?

Since my last update, the Call

committee received informa-

tion on one potential candi-

date for the Senior Pastor po-

sition. After reviewing the

profile, we came to the con-

clusion that the proposed can-

didate would not be a good fit

for this congregation.

This process may seem to be a

bit tedious and drawn out, but

after speaking with other con-

gregations, it appears that 18

to 24 months seems to be the

norm to find a Pastor. So

please bear with us - we are

trying to find the right person

to be our Pastor.

The Southeastern Pennsyl-

vania Synod has posted the

NHELC opening so candi-

dates from all over the US can

see the posting. The last can-

didate was from Florida, so

you can tell the opening is

visible to a great number of

individuals.

Please pray for the Call com-

mittee as we search for the

right Pastor to lead this con-

gregation.

To our Prayer Partner

Churches

From the Protestant Church in

SCI Graterford

Re: A Big THANK YOU!

and an Important Update

Greetings from your brothers

of the Protestant Church at

Graterford:

As “go-betweens” connecting

the men of SCI Graterford and

our fifteen sister-churches

around the northeastern

United States, Lenore and I

are humbled by your consis-

tent and compassionate shar-

ing of God’s Love in Jesus.

The contributions of calen-

dars, devotionals, books and

cards (reminder that only

white envelopes are allowed

in the facility) are steady re-

minders to our men that they

are not forgotten and not with-

out hope and prayerful sup-

port.

The Prayer Requests we send

to you from Graterford ex-

pand the residents’ confidence

as they tread a faithful path

while incarcerated. We con-

tinue to encourage you to

“return the favor” by sending

your Prayer Requests to

them—it is always important

to remember that everyone

benefits when others pray for

them. You have approxi-

mately 250 regular Prayer

Partners at the prison ready

and willing to pray for you,

your families, your churches

and beyond. Thank you for

each and every slip of paper

that bears something for us to

put before our Lord in prayer.

Update: We will soon be

moving to Phoenix! Noooo,

not Arizona (but after this

winter, I wouldn’t mind)! As

many of you are aware, for

about 6 years, the state has

been constructing a new

prison on the Graterford prop-

erty, just feet beyond its 30-

foot wall. After many delays,

it now appears we will be

moving to the new jail—SCI

Phoenix East and Phoenix

West—within a month or so.

Security issues prevent a

“hard date” for this, but it will

be coming soon, and will be a

major undertaking. The stress

that accompanies “the un-

known” has been a major fac-

tor for our men as there will

be many changes, both

wanted and unwanted, for

them. During this transition,

it would be best if we cur-

tailed the calendar donation

project—we have a good sup-

ply to move over to Phoenix,

and more might not be appre-

ciated by the moving crew.

What we do need in this un-

certain time are your prayers

for calm, hope and persever-

ance. You may have seen in

the news that Graterford has

suffered 5 suicides since Janu-

ary. These have not been di-

rectly due to “the move,” but

the unsettled atmosphere in a

Mission Statement

Hearing, Embracing and Sharing

God’s Word with All

through Worship, Fellowship and Outreach

Vision Statement

Our vision, as members of the New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, is to strive to hear God’s Word

clearly so that our hearts deeply embrace and are compelled to share God’s Word as the Good News of Jesus

Christ through our everyday lives.

We hear God’s Word through Scripture readings, sermons, puppet skits, Bible studies, music and Bible-

centered youth programs.

We embrace God’s Word as we engage with others in a life of personal and group study.

We share God’s Word as we serve the needs of our community and the world through building and repairing

homes, supporting educational and service institutions at home and abroad, visiting the sick and homebound,

donating food and clothing for the homeless and the poor and a variety of other service opportunities.
