Towson High School Alumni Association

Fall 2015

Greetings Alumni! From time to time, the THSAA undergoes changes that fit both our mem-

bership base as well as the current society. The organization was formed in 1907 as a social entity that would allow gradu-ates to maintain their relationships with their fellow graduates. As times changed, the organization became more reunion driven and started focusing on providing scholarships. The technology generation brought forth our first computer database, more frequent mailings to keep in touch and a strengthened financial commitment to the high school itself.

And so, we enter the next phase. Volunteer support in the organization has nearly ceased, but this is not new to similar organizations as individuals are pulled in so many directions. What is most important now is to make sure that THSAA continues regardless of vol-unteer support – we owe it to the school that gave us so much in strengthening the foundations of our lives. We have taken measures over the past few years by hiring an office manager to run the dai-ly functions and have engaged in social media and e-communications to assist in both connecting with today’s alumni as well as cutting costs.

Most recently, we have contracted with an organization membership soft-ware company who will take us to the next level of communication with you. In the next few months, you will see an opportunity to go online and review your profile, update it and begin engag-

ing with both your classmates and all other alumni. Communication will be streamed effortlessly and regularly based on your preferences. We will have a job board that will allow alumni related com-panies to connect and offer positions to other THS grads. Alumni will be able to advertise their businesses to create more networks. Reunions will be able to set up their own groups, very similar to Facebook, and allow for notifications and conversations between classmates. Updates to your address and contact in-formation will be instantaneous and you will be able to control what information is viewable and to who. Finally, donations to specific projects and membership dues will be able to be processed online, once again, streamlining our systems and sav-ing your money.

Donations, of course, are still needed to finance the new system and to contin-ue to provide Towson High School with their “wish list” items. Be on the look-out for our annual appeal letter to arrive through the mail. The goal is to eventu-ally have all transactions and correspon-dence go through the new system. If you have an email address, please make sure you provide it when sending in your do-nation.

We are very excited for this new change and hope you find it beneficial while we strive to create a better connec-tion with you.

The music program at THS con-tinues to offer outstanding mu-sic education to the students in

their program. During the 2014-2015 school year the school transitioned into an A/B schedule which allowed more students to take music classes. This year there are over 600 students in the various music classes as well as 97 students in the marching band! As a result the music boosters are needed even more than ever.

We have purchased new pro-grams for the AP music lab, repaired a few tubas, and purchased addi-tional marching band uniforms and concert attire. These expenses are in addition to the usual costs of clean-ing and repairing uniforms as well as equipment. Since last year the con-cert attire includes not only tuxes for the gentlemen but lovely black long dresses for the ladies, which makes them look quite professional. We have long range plans with our cap-ital budget to continue purchasing large instruments so that the stu-dents have quality instruments to play at school.

Having such a large music pro-gram has not compromised the qual-ity however. Last year the teachers achieved the highest score possible in

all but one area during their assess-ments; which is how the county rates the school’s music programs. The marching band continues to march in parades, the orchestra, jazz and vocal students are well represented in the All County and All State compe-titions and many have also been cho-sen to play with the BSO in their Side by Side competition. The Jazz Ensem-ble continues to play at Kenilworth Mall during the Holiday season as well as at various events around Tow-son. Last year the school put on the musical Hairspray which was a smash success and Marc Shaiman, the writ-er of the Broadway score, came to the show and wrote a personal letter to the teachers praising the work of the band. How many schools can claim that success?! When you add it all up THS has a fantastic music program with dedicated and creative teachers as well as students who are talented and work hard to make this program so wonderful.

In 1966, Towson High School stu-dents and staff began Colophon, the school’s literary arts maga-

zine. The first issue published was little more than a small collection of poems and a few black and white il-lustrations. Since then, Colophon has grown into an annual award-winning publication that features a range of student works including prose, po-etry, drama, sculpture, photography, painting and musical scores. Colo-phon was founded with the intention of giving Towson High students the chance to express themselves in new ways and to share and enjoy in the thriving creative culture within the school. These intentions have yet to change.

This coming year, 2016, marks Colophon’s 50th anniversary. To cele-brate, the Colophon staff has decided to publish a “Golden Issue” that com-piles some of the remarkable works from each of the past forty-nine years, alongside our annual edition of the magazine. We want to honor and commemorate the works of students that have continued to inspire Tow-son’s creative arts for so many years, as well as uphold, what has become, an important tradition to the school.

In keeping to tradition, this “Golden Issue” will be student-de-signed and sold. We are hoping to be finished scanning, reading, design-ing, editing and printing it by the De-cember holidays of this year. By this January we will be onto our next task of assembling and producing the 50th edition of the magazine. It is a busy year for Colophon and we hope that anyone interested in celebrating with us will do just that.

If you wish to pre-order ei-

ther book you can contact the staff at our magazine’s email: [email protected]. More importantly, though, we are interested in meeting you. For the “Golden Edition,” we are looking for people interested in writ-

ing commentaries about their experi-ence with the magazine. We want to talk with everyone who remembers, worked on or was published in Col-ophon over the many years. It is our goal to show Colophon’s similarities and differences over the generations.

We at Colophon hope to see and speak with you soon. For more in-formation about Colophon, visit our website at www.thscolophon.weebly.com. Thanks for an amazing fifty years!

Alumni Visit THS

The Classes of 1965 and 1975 came back home to THS during late September. Both

groups toured the campus, sharing memories with one another and the student tour guides, who are mem-bers of Student Government. The tours were organized by Mr. Seward, ’64- building mentor, and Mr. Blair- the SGA advisor.

Memorable highlights: The Class of ‘65 was dismayed that a favorite student hang-out area had been re-

placed by an addition to the build-ing- the science wing and library. The former class President from ’75 asking if the tradition of passing down a master key to the building to Senior class presidents was still active (and it is not!). We welcome all classes to visit THS during their reunion years. The student guides enjoyed learning about the history of the building from those who made it. Thank you for allowing the current Generals to reconnect with our true Golden Generals!

TOWSON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Dear Ms. Millard,

Thank you for awarding me the Arthur C. Crommer Mathematics Award and schol-arship! I am pleased and honored that you recognized me. I was particularly happy to receive the award from Mr. Stange, one of my favorite teachers. This will help greatly in helping me pay for my expenses at the Univer-sity of Pittsburgh.

I look forward to being a member of the Alumni Association in the near future!

Sincerely,Walter YoungTowson High SchoolClass of 2015
