In 1979 Grandparents Day became an official holiday by President Jimmy Carter. I was very fortunate to have grown up with my grandparents and great grandparents living close by. My maternal grandparents lived next door to us and later on my parents built an ohana (apartment) behind our house for our great grandparents. Once I became an adult and moved away from the cold Illinois winters to the warmer climate of Arizona, I learned of an or- ganization called The Holiday Project®, which organized visits to elderly facilities on Christmas Day. My husband and I became chairpersons for this project for many years and I thoroughly enjoyed the visits and seeing the happiness it brought to each of the residents when we spent time with them on the holidays. Our motto for The Holiday Project® was Youre The Gift. This really helped fill the void of no longer having my own liv- ing grandparents. Our residents seemed more like family and friends to me and it felt as if they were my hanai(adopted) grandpar- ents. Over the years Ive seen wonderful family relationships and how our staff at Roselani Place is very caring when assisting the residents. To me, its like celebrating Grandparents Day all year long. On the first Sunday after Labor Day we celebrate National Grandparents Day. This year the date falls on September 13. Like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day we also have a whole day dedicated to our grandparents. In 1979 Grandparent’s Day became an official holiday by President Jimmy Carter. I was very fortunate to have grown up with my grandparents and great grandparents living close by. My maternal grandparents lived next door to us and later on my parents built an ohana (apartment) behind our house for our great grandparents. Once I became an adult and moved away from the cold Illinois winters to the warmer climate of Arizona, I learned of an or-ganization called The Holiday Project®, which organized visits to elderly facilities on Christmas Day. My husband and I became chairpersons for this project for many years and I thoroughly enjoyed the visits and seeing the happiness it brought to each of the residents when we spent time with them on the holidays. Our motto for The Holiday Project® was “You’re The Gift.” This really helped fill the void of no longer having my own liv-ing grandparents. In 1999 my husband and I, along with our son made the move to our beau-tiful island of Maui. When our son started college in 2006, I was very for-tunate to be hired as the Marketing Director for Roselani Place and enjoyed that position for nearly 12 years. Our residents seemed more like family and friends to me and it felt as if they were my “hanai” (adopted) grandpar-ents. Over the years I’ve seen wonderful family relationships and how our staff at Roselani Place is very caring when assisting the residents. To me, it’s like celebrating Grandparent’s Day all year long. Now, as my husband and I are packing up our belongings to move closer to

our families, I will truly miss all of the “grandparents” / friends I have got-

ten to know at Roselani Place. On September 13th, please take a moment

to spend some time (face time) or call someone who may not have a chance

to socialize much these days. My we all practice our own version of The

Holiday Project® and reach out to those who may just be a phone call

away.

Roselani Place Covid-19 Updates from the General Manager

As part of our ongoing communication with residents, families, staff, vendors and guests of Rose-

lani Place, we would like to provide an update to the Covid-19 cases within our Community. Since our last update, our case counts have unfortunately risen. As part of our routine testing the current case count as of September 1st is 33 cases: 20 staff and 13 residents.

Moving forward Roselani Place will continue to test residents every 4 days with nasal swab, and staff every 2 days, until such time as the case counts diminish for staff and residents and the Maui

Health Department provides updated guidance for continued testing.

We will provide updates every week as the situation progresses, and appreciate your understanding of this situation. In order to contain the spread of this highly contagious virus, newly created work space bubbles or cohorts or followed. Please expect a slight delay in our services and know that we are trying our very best to meet the needs of our residents under this given situation.

All the staff are working harder than ever before. We continue to monitor and provide the best care to our affected residents and are thinking and wishing our staff affected a speedy recovery. Roselani Place stays committed to the safety and well-being of our residents. And no matter how strict your policies are this virus shows how extremely contagious COVID-19 really is and how quickly it’s contracted. We have been blessed by the community with donations of PPE from Hale Makua, Bayada Home Health Care, Kaiser and Hawaii Healthcare Emergency Management. We wanted to thank the residents, families, friends, the Maui health community, Mayor Michael Victorino, Dr. Lorrin Pang MD, Takako Nakaaki, Heidi Taogoshi RN, Carol Lopez RN, Dr. Marcus Griffin, Dr. Reza Danesh and the entire Mo-DoMD Team and Healthcare Association of Hawaii HAH, who assisted us in mitigating this virus. Eve-ryone’s support, prayers and aloha continue to get us through this challenging time. It’s our continued goal to minimize the number of residents, staff, families, and visitors in the Commu-nity to help mitigate the spread to others. Maui Health Department recommends that any person who

develops fever or respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) should stay home away from other people and seek health advice by phone from a healthcare provider. We appreciate everyone’s continued support, and that we recognize the heroes among us who work to provide excellent care to

our Kupuna.

**We would also like to take a minute to apologize and clarify a statement made in our last press re-lease. New clarification was provided by the family member, and we would like to share it here. In our originally press release, we noted "Because of the possible exposure from a family member, itis unclear where the resident had actually contracted the virus”. Later on it stated “On August 17, a nurse at Rose-lani Place was notified of possible exposure from the resident's son". The correct statement should read, “a nurse at Roselani Place was notified by the resident’s son of a possible exposure of the resident while in the hospital, after a call from the hospital contract tracers”. **

Thank you, Faith Gianan

Labor Day - a holiday honoring working men and women The United States, Puerto Rico and Canada all observe the first Monday of September as Labor Day. The Labor Day holiday as we know it grew out of the efforts of labor unions over a century ago. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, records indicate the holi-day was first proposed in the late 19th century. Matthew M. Maguire and Peter J. McGuire are credited as the founders of this holiday observance, as they were the first to suggest there be a day of observance honoring working people here in the United States. Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter, helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. The first observance of this holiday in the United States came in September of 1882 when a Labor Day Pa-rade was held by the Knights of Labor in New York City. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make La-bor Day a legal holiday. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holi-day. Many people observe this day with cookouts, weekend trips, fun events or just plain relaxation. Some labor organizations and businesses hold gatherings for their members and workers to celebrate the day togeth-er.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s® October 17, 2020

Different Walk, Same Reasons . . . The world may look a little different right now, but one thing hasn’t changed: our commitment to ending Alzheimer’s. This year, Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is everywhere — on every sidewalk, track and trail. Your health and safety are our top priorities. We won’t have a large in-person gathering — instead, we invite you to walk in small teams of friends and family while others in your community do the same. Because we are all still walking and fundraising for the same thing: a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Every year the Roselani Place staff participates in this annual event. We look forward to any donations you can contribute to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, and re-search. Contact Debbie Priest, at 871-7720 to donate or to walk.

National Assisted Living Week® was established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995. “Caring is EssentiAL” is this year's theme for National Assisted Living Week, which highlights the incredible care provided by essential caregivers in assisted living facilities across the country. Many of us know someone who has either worked or re-

sided in an assisted living environment. Assisted living

facilities provide thorough care and a sense of communi-

ty for older adults and individuals living with disabilities.

Celebrating National Assisted Living Week gives us a

chance to recognize all of the staff, volunteers, and com-

munities that play a vital role in

making these facilities a suc-

cess. So get ready, September

13-19, 2020mis a week to point

out the amazing things that go

on within the world of assisted

living.
