1-10-17 Proactive Weed Management in 2017
Addressing herbicide resistance requires a proactive strategy. Especially if target weeds confer stacked resistance to multiple herbicides. The University of Illinois recently added a waterhemp biotype to the international survey of herbicide resistant weeds. This biotype is resistant to 5 sites of action including synthetic auxins, specifically 2,4-D (Heap, I. The International Survey of Resistant Weeds. Online. Internet. January 5, 2017). Multiple resistance in waterhemp is expanding throughout the Midwest, leading to management challenges for biotypes with no post control options. Overlaying residual herbicides from different sites of action is imperative when targeting these populations. Managing emergence with residual herbicides will reduce selection pressure on new technologies and maintain yield potential by minimizing crop competition.

A field study conducted in Arkansas demonstrates that a single female palmer amaranth plant going to seed can put fields out of production in only 3 years if herbicide diversity is not practiced. Weed escapes with multiple resistance pose an extreme risk to agricultural production and should be managed with a zero tolerance policy.
Practicing diversity in terms of chemical, mechanical, cultural and biological weed management focusing on the soil seed bank will be critical for sustainable control of multiple resistant weeds. Certain cultural and mechanical techniques such as row spacing, seeding rate, and tillage can be practically implemented in 2017 to enhance and diversify tactics on driver weeds.
Moldboard plowing likely isn’t feasible on the entire farm. But where soils are not as erosive and pigweed pressure is high, research has demonstrated a significant reduction of pigweed emergence when administered.
Narrow row spacing and seeding more plants per acre are strategies that can accelerate canopy closure. Pigweed seeds typically germinate with moisture and temperature spikes. Canopy closure reduces sunlight penetration and stabilizes soil temperature reducing emergence. These cultural tactics can be practical components of an integrated plan to manage weeds in 2017.
Resistance Management Guidelines: Start Clean and Stay Clean – Start with strong pre and follow 14-21 days later with an overlapping residual. Only use post herbicide technologies to clean up few escapes from residual treatments, not as primary weed removal agents. Scouting – Determine burndown herbicide or tillage effectiveness, adjust program to remove escapes prior to planting. Apply overlapping residual treatments to bare soil, if weeds are emerging adjust as necessary. Multiple Sites of Action – Employ long residual herbicides from multiple sites of action. Mechanical / Cultural / Biological Management – Deep Tillage: less erosive fields with a history of high pigweed density. 15’’ or Drilled row spacing, seeding rates of 160K or higher (adjust higher with comfort level for variety / field history lodging potential) to encourage canopy closure. Consider implementing dense cover crop systems to impede spring weed emergence. Minimize Weed Seed Production – practice zero tolerance for weed escapes (even if it means hand removal!) Minimize field to field weed seed movement – Clean equipment, harvest worst fields last if possible.
FMC Herbicide Solutions Selecting the longest lasting and most effective soil residual herbicides on resistant weeds with long germination intervals should be a component of any management plan. Authority® and Anthem® herbicides provide superior residual activity and effective solutions on resistant pigweeds, especially when utilized in an overlapping residual strategy.

In order to keep current and future post herbicide / trait technologies effective, utilizing programs allowing the least amount of weed escapes to reduce selection pressure on those technologies (Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System, Liberty Link® herbicide, Enlist™ Weed
Control System etc.) will be imperative. Authority and Anthem herbicides have demonstrated superior performance on multiple-resistant weed species in addition to broad weed spectrums.
