Message from the Director While talking to a mentor the other day she gave me a little advise. She told me stop calling the members and center “mine”. I agreed with her that I need to stop referring to them as mine. Later as I sat down and did a little reflection and thought why I refer the members as “my members” or the center as “my center”, I realized that I do this because I feel like the Corbin is my home away from home and the member as my extended family. I advocate for Corbin’s needs as if they were my own. I feel Corbin’s successes and failures as my own. I am proud to where I work and sometimes, I get carried away, so I promise to work on the “mine”.

Mrs. Corbin is one of those successes that needs celebrating. In just 1 month the generous donors raised $5570 for the replacement of the old van. We maxed out our max at $5000 to bring the total raised to $10,570. THANK YOU! Please don’t think Corbin does not need your money if you have not mailed in your check. We currently are at $21,968.17 dollars raised, but we need to get to $60,000. Any dollar amount you can give helps, so thank you. February is a time for love. Come celebrate on Valentine’s day at Corbin’s Wheel of Love lunch. Enjoy soup, salad and breadstick just like Olive Garden and prepared by Paula Davis. The entertainment is interactive. You can try your hand at Wheel of Fortune for your chance to take home a prize. Even if you don’t want to get up and solve the phrase, the food and laughs alone make is a must attend event. We even have our own Pat Sajak and Vanna White! This year Corbin is trying something new. We decided to have our St. Patrick Lunch on St. Patrick’s day Tuesday March 17th. Come enjoy a corned beef and roasted veggie meals, while being entertained by the Tap Grandmas. Tickets are on sale at the reception desk. All of this great news needs to be shared. We are in need to people to help distribute the newsletter. If you are available or interested contact Jessica in the office for more information. Marketing Corbin starts with you, so please invite people to Corbin and let them find their home away from home.

The MAC presents Mt. Saint Helens, 40 years Later

Mt. Pompeii and Lunch

Thursday, February 20,2020 9:30am-2:00pm Tour Leader: Jan Charbonneau Mount St. Helens: Critical Memory - 40 Years Later. Commemorating the 40th anni-

versary of the May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, which remains the most destructive in United States history and one of the most universal memories in the Pacific Northwest. The MAC also includes, Pompeii. Pompeii brings to life the erup-tion of Mount Vesuvius in August 79 AD. It buried the cities of Pompeii and Hercula-neum in volcanic ash, preserving tools, art and buildings, and providing an incredi-ble resource through which to understand Roman history. Then, hear the roar of

Mount Vesuvius and feel the earth move under your feet as the volcano erupts be-fore your eyes. The juxtaposition of these two “explosive” exhibitions will demon-strate the risks of living in the shadow of active volcanoes and how a stronger un-

derstanding of both events can help to save lives in the future. (Lunch on your own)

one of our finest examples of Irish Theater. We travel with Michael as his memory takes us back to 1936 County Donegal where his mother and her four sisters struggle to balance a life of heartache and loss with moments of joy and hope. It is a play about women, strong, independent women yet, like all great theater, Dancing At Lughnasa carries all of us aloft with music and dance and characters to a universal place where longings and loss are buoyed by simple joys and hope for the future.

VICTIM ADVOCACY

Later in Life/Vulnerable Adult Abuse Lutheran Community Service Northwest -

Spokane

March 11th at 1pm in the Upper North Elder abuse and neglect can be physical, emotional, or even finan-cial. It might be a caregiver neglecting basic needs like medication or meals, or a cohabiting family member using their relationship as an “entitlement” to finances or resources. Additionally, many financial scams are targeted directly (and only) at elders. Many victims rely on abusers for daily needs, financial reasons, or other very real reasons. Our advocacy team at LCS Northwest under-stands. We are here for you 24 hours a day. We can provide infor-mation and connect you with resources. Our advocates can pro-vide information, referral, safety planning, and medical & legal advocacy.

Through Meditation we create a connection between our body and our spirit. We learn how the physical aspects of Yoga Asana and Ayurvedic Medicine give us the tools to regain and maintain our health, on every level. We explore the energy sys-tem of our body known as the Chakras. Finally we will explore the angelic realms and how to gain the support we all need from a place of unconditional love. Our next session begins February 24– March 9. You can register through SCC by call-ing 279-6030 and asking for The Art of the Inner Journey, Part 2. WII BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Seven WII bowlers from Corbin competed in the January 10, 2020 All City Wii Bowling Tournament that was held at the Spokane Valley Baptist

Church close to the Holman Retirement Community. We seven braved a snow storm to participate in the tournament. There were approximately 112 Wii bowlers from across the city with 10 teams participating. Well, after a valiant effort by all 7 members, we had a nice lunch and visit and came home with a trophy as a result of our efforts. Pat Pethers bowled an impressive 256 , which was Corbin’s best game to date. Carril Cramer bowled a nice 245, Mary Kay Bryan bowled 236. With these three bowlers Corbin earned the third-place team trophy with an average of 245. We only had to count our best three bowlers today. The other Corbin bowlers playing today were Phoebe Daniels, Bonnie Hill, Barbara Ann Bonner, Theresa Topp and Pat Pethers of the Corbin bowlers won the only door prize. Pat also won fourth place individual for the day. It was worth her time to come. Just a note, there were nine of us scheduled to play today but Paul got lost again. Pretty soon we may need to have Judy drive him out. I haven’t been told, but I am assuming there will be another All City Tour-nament on February 14th. I will confirm with everyone when I know for sure.

NEXT WII BOWLING SESSION: The Corbin Wii bowler’s league had a meeting on Janu-ary 13th at 1:00 to talk about the results of the Winter session and to prepare for the Spring session to come. It was decided that the new session will begin on February 3, 2020 and will end the week of April 20th. Mary Kay Bryan

Corbin celebrated 6 birthdays on January 3rd this year! Our birthday friends are Jan Charbonneau, Marlys Hartley, Barba Ann Bonner, Dolores Steward, Ernest Vollmer, Mary Gaffigan, Evelyn Delange. Jan was the lucky winner of the $20 Corbin Gift Certificate. The cake and gift certificate was provided by Fairwood Retirement Village & Assisted Liv-ing. The lunch was delicious, with a great variety of food. The next Birthday Pot Luck is February 7, 2020. If it is your birthday month, please let the volunteers at the reception desk know before February 6th. Bring a dish, enjoy the company and celebrate, even if it’s not your birthday. The lunches are a lot of fun and you may even win a prize. If you are able to bring a little information about your dish that will be helpful for those with allergies. Thank You!

In Case you were all curious, here is a photo of the cat that was found and adopted at our Picnic in the park last year. He likes to get into mis-chief!

about tours, see page 5 of the communicator for

information on what’s coming up. You can al-

your smiling faces and would be happy to fill you

in on all the exciting trips we have to offer.

Thank you to everyone who attended the travel fair on January 24th, it

was a great turn out. Thank you to those that made chili. Every recipe

was delicious and hard to choose from, but the people spoke, and our

winner was Paula Davis. Don't you worry though, there is time to get

that special recipe perfected and bring it next year to our Annual Travel

Fair and Chili Cook Off.
