CARL SPATAFORA...2019 RESIDENTIAL BEAUTIFICATION AWARD WINNER PHOTO BY STEVE FOULKROD Inside St. Clair Shores The official newsletter for the City of St. Clair Shores BLOSSOM HEATH PARK BEACH HOUSE Construction on the Beach House at Blossom Heath Park resumed full-speed ahead after a short work stoppage due to an engineering problem earlier in the summer. Workers dug 15 feet below the surface and discovered that the old building was sitting on 12 feet of landfill and was unable to support the new building design. Re-engineering of the foundation and the material to correct the problem added $136,000 to the project. A combination of City and TIFA funds covered the additional cost. The renovations are on target now that the redesigned foundation is in place. New steel framing is installed for the second floor deck, electricians are on site installing the rough electrical work and masons are completing the brick work. The existing roofing has been removed and prepared for the new roofing once the masonry work is complete. The revised schedule shows the project completion between late October and mid-November. NEW APARTMENT COMPLEX The site of the old Gourmet House on Jefferson will soon have a new occupant. City Council approved building a two story, 24 unit apartment complex on the site. The site plan proposed by Rondo Investment LLC calls for 5 one-bedroom units and 7 two-bedroom units on each floor. Each unit will be single story with either a walk-out patio or a second story balcony. Amenities include a rooftop patio, basement laundry and storage, a fitness center and enclosed lobby areas. The apartment complex will also have hard-board siding painted in “Key West” pastel colors and a lighthouse element. Construction is planned for October. LAKE ST. CLAIR WATER LEVELS The DPW continued to monitor the lake levels over the summer and discovered that we are not out of the “water” just yet. Sewer Department employees continue to measure the lake level at locations where we have had water on the roads. Although the lake levels have been dropping, they are still at or just below the road surface at many locations. The DPW has been able to remove some of the temporary plugs and bypass pumps along the waterfront, but they will be keeping them ready as the City anticipates needing them again this spring. This winter, the DPW will be making repairs and doing maintenance on our 42 permanent storm water pump stations and various portable gasoline powered bypass pumps so that we will be ready in the spring. Sand bags and sand are still available at the filling stations. The City urges residents to keep the sand bags that they have installed on their property until the City knows for certain that the lake levels are dropping and they will no longer be needed. This year, residents started to see problems with the high lake levels in the beginning of May. If possible residents should try to protect the sand bags they have filled and installed against freezing lake waters so they do not lose them. Resident can contact the DPW at 445-5350 with any questions or concerns. Senior Centerfor Active Adults...Where YOU Matter!!!

St. Clair Shores

APPLE PIE WEEK IS HERE! It’s that time of year again! The annual St. Clair Shores Senior Activity Center’s Apple Pie Fundraiser, our largest fundraiser of the year, from Wednesday, September 18 at 8 am until 1,000 pies are sold out! Pies are for sale for $10/pie. All sales are first come; first serve, and no pre-sales. If you’ve visited the Senior Center during sales in the past, you already know that the pies sell out faster than you can bake a pie. They’re homemade from dough to filling by a battalion of volunteers and delicious!. When we sell out of 1,000 pies, that’s it...they’re gone. You’ll have to wait until next year’s fundraiser.

Proceeds from our Apple Pie Fundraiser support programs and the Senior Activities Center and the hot meal program we offer our senior daily.

Every sum-mer I have the privilege of filming an episode of The Mayor’s Corner at the homes of the winners of the City’s Beautifica-tion Award. The winners welcome me into their homes and yards and talk passionately about their landscaping and the improvements they have made over the years. These winners are not profession-als; they’re like you and me. They’re ordi-nary citizens who love to garden, who love to “play in the dirt” and create something beautiful in their City. Sponsored by the St. Clair Shores Beautification Commission, the award is intended to inspire other neighbors to improve their homes and landscapes. As many of our present and past winners have pointed out, the need to revitalize and enhance their property especially in an older community becomes “contagious.” Neighbors continually walk the neighborhood, talking with one another about gardening and landscaping; then, go back to their own homes, apply a little “sweat equity” and improve their own property a little bit more. It’s a domino effect and exactly what we hope the Beautification Awards would achieve…a more attractive and livable community. Now if you’re reading this and thinking to yourself “I can’t possibly make my home look like these winners; I don’t know what to do.” Borrow an idea from each of our winners and duplicate it in your home. It may be displaying artwork on the brick wall of your patio like Lynn and Nelson Caldwell or using an entire palette of colors in your flowers and shrubs to enhance your landscaping like Carl Spatafora (a special “thank you” to Carl for his warm hospitality and those of his neighbors on the day I visited his home) or using greenery as a focal point in your landscaping and taking out the grass from the any cracks in your sidewalk like Sharon Pine. Or it may be as simple as putting a pot of flowers on your porch. Congratulations to all of our Beautification Award winners. I believe that a well-kept home, neighborhood and business says that the residents take pride in their community. With pride comes value, beauty and a great image of St. Clair Shores! As always I welcome your comments or concerns, you can contact me by phone at 445-3983 or email at [email protected].
