Your impactEvery year, more than 10 000 cyclists

take part in 19 MS Bike tours across

Canada, raising more than $9 million.

By supporting innovative MS research

as well as services that help people

with MS in their day-to-day lives, you

are making a difference in the lives of

Canadians living with MS.

Last year, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada — with Biogen Canada and Brain Canada — launched an innovative $7 million+ Canadian MS Progression Cohort study.

“Being diagnosed with MS can be daunting. Symptoms are inconsistent and finding ways to manage the disease can be tricky,” says Chantal Milne, diagnosed with MS in 2012. “I want to be the mom who is able to play with my daughter on the floor for years to come. It brings me comfort to know that time and energy are being spent on research that will not only benefit me, but also future generations — including my daughter’s.”

With the support of our dedicated PwC MS Bike participants, groundbreaking research studies like the MS Progression Cohort are possible.

Meet James

Back in 2012, one of my coworkers decided to challenge

himself by taking part in a PwC MS Bike event. He chose the

Grand Bend to London ride. He returned with so many great things

to say about the event and his experience, and I signed up right

after registration opened. Three weeks later my wife was diagnosed

with MS. PwC MS Bike is more than a fundraiser, more than an event

– it’s a community all on its own. Hundreds, even thousands, come

together for each ride. This is part of what makes PwC MS Bike so

important, beyond the world-class research into finding a cure for

MS and funding that supports numerous community-level programs

that help people with MS simply live their lives.

- James, team captain of MS Grinds Our Gears, Pwc MS Bike - Grand Bend to London

Are you a new rider at PwC MS Bike? You’re in for an amazing experience! We offer fundraising support as well as all

the information you need to get ready for the big day. We can provide you with

resources to help you reach your fundraising goal, match you with a team if

desired and guide you through your PwC MS Bike experience.

• Learn the perks of riding with a team on page 6.

• Check out fundraising tips and rewards on pages 9 and 10.

Why $300?All PwC MS Bike participants must raise $300 as a minimum requirement. This amount ensures that we’re covering event costs and raising critical funds to achieve the following goals:

• Funding world-leading Canadian MS research that is integral to finding the cause and cure of MS.

• Offering a variety of programs and services to help Canadians affected by MS effectively manage and cope with the disease.

• Advocating for flexible income and employment supports, caregiver supports, coordinated care and more government investment in MS research.

Thank you for raising funds on behalf of Canadians affected by MS.

Invite a friend, family member or colleague to ride with you and their registration fee will be waived!*

Call 1-800-268-7582 ext. 3038 to register a friend for free.* Applies only to a new cyclist being referred by a past participant. One referral per past participant. All registered cyclists must raise the $300 fundraising minimum.

• Start early Once you register, start fundraising. The sooner you start asking, the sooner you will reach and even surpass your goal. So start asking today!

• Set a goal of $1000 When you aim high, many people will give larger donations to help you reach your goal. If you raise $1000, you earn our commemorative Club 1000 jersey. Raise $2000 and you earn the matching shorts.

• Make a personal donation Donate towards your own fundraising goal to get the momentum going and show your commitment to the cause.

• Use the Participant Centre The Participant Centre’s tools and resources make it easy to achieve your fundraising goal. You can edit your personal page, request secure donations, customize emails to donors and track your progress at msbike.ca.

• Ask your top donors first To set the standard of donations you receive, reach out first to those who have been your top donors in the past.

• Then ask everyone This is the number one tip given by our top fundraisers — let everyone know you need their support. Share why you ride for MS and how donor’s contributions support people affected by the disease.

• Ask your workplace Check with your workplace if it offers a charity matching gift program. Send in a request to match your donation to help increase your fundraising total.

• Use social media Post a link to your personal fundraising page on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and ask your friends, family and business network to donate. Take advantage of our social media tools and download our MS Bike app, details at msbike.ca/app.

• Get creative Fundraising doesn’t have to be restricted to asking for donations. Sell your baked goods in return for a donation. Throw a party and ask guests to donate in lieu of a hostess gift. Organize a sports pool and dedicate a portion of the money to your fundraising. Your donors will appreciate your effort and commitment.

• Join or form a team Need to stay motivated? Many teams are looking to welcome new members. Call 1-800-268-7582 ext. 3038 to find out how to join an existing team, or form your own team with co-workers, family and friends. There is power and fun in numbers.

• Thank your donors Thank those who have helped you reach your fundraising goal. This is made easy through pre-populated and customizable templates in the Participant Centre.

Event day supportPwC MS Bike is a fully supported cycling tour. The following services are provided on event day to registered cyclists wearing the appropriate rider bibs:

Rest stopsOptional rest stops are located every 15 to 20 kilometres along the route. Each rest stop has a bike mechanic, portable toilets and first aid supplies, and is stocked with refreshments like water, sports drinks, snacks and fruit.

Tour LeadersTour Leaders are PwC MS Bike participants who have volunteered to help cyclists along the route. They can change a flat, provide basic first aid or contact a support and gear (SAG) vehicle. Tour Leaders are identified by their green jerseys. Interested in being a Tour Leader? Contact [email protected].

First aidTrained first aiders are available throughout the route to help all participants. If you need assistance, do not hesitate to ask. In the case of an emergency, please call 911.

Bike mechanicsMost rest stops will have a bike mechanic, courtesy of a local MS Friendly Bike Shop who can provide basic repairs (i.e. tools and tubes). We encourage you to take your bike to an MS Friendly Bike Shop for an inspection prior to the ride to ensure that your bike is in top condition. It is recommended that you pack additional spare tubes.

SAG vehiclesSupport and gear (SAG) vehicles travel along the route between rest stops. They can help cyclists with flats and provide basic first aid. They can also transport cyclists to the next rest stop if a bike mechanic or more first aid is needed. If a cyclist is unable to complete the ride, a SAG vehicle can transport the cyclist to the finish line.

To signal a SAG vehicle driver, follow these steps:

• Move safely off the road and out of the path of other cyclists

• Dismount and stand near your bike

• Remove your helmet and wave it at the SAG vehicle

Motorcyle JockeysThere will be a crew of volunteer Motorcycle Jockeys travelling along the route to assist in the event of minor mechanical issues and to communicate to SAG vehicles if transportation is required. (Not available at all events.)

Safety on route • This is not a competitive race; respect

fellow cyclists and different levels of cycling experience.

• Wear a helmet correctly. This is mandatory.

• The roads are open and therefore cyclists must always follow the Highway Traffic Act.

• Give hand signals when stopping or turning.

• Obey traffic signs and signals at all times.

• Headphones/earbuds are not permitted while riding.

• Ride on the right side of the road or in marked bike lanes to allow faster cyclists and vehicles to safely pass on the left.

• Pass on the left. Announce yourself to other cyclists by saying, “On your left.”

• Ride no more than two across, and when necessary, ride single file to let vehicles and faster cyclists pass on the left.

• When another cyclist is passing you on the left, do not turn around. Hold handlebars steady and keep your bike straight while maintaining your speed.

• Always yield to pedestrians.

• Only use your cell phone when stopped and pulled over to the right out of bike and vehicle traffic.

• Watch out for road hazards such as patches of loose gravel on the road.

• The communities we ride through are supporting our mission to end MS – let’s thank them by being respectful to their residents.

Training tipsWhile PwC MS Bike is a recreational event and a fit for cyclists of all levels, we encourage riders to get geared up to end MS before the event in the following ways:

Special events and opportunitiesTraining rides PwC MS Bike 30 kilometre or 40 kilometre training rides are an opportunity to prepare for your ride while meeting fellow cyclists. Enjoy refreshments at the halfway rest stop, get fundraising tips and submit any funds you’ve collected before the event.

Pub nights and info sessionsEnjoy free appetizers and connect with fellow participants at our pub nights. Speak to MS Society staff, have all your questions answered and submit any funds that you’ve collected before the event.

We also hold info sessions at local bike shops. Meet MS Society staff and talk to cycling experts who will cover topics such as training, what to expect at the

event and basic bike maintenance tips.

For more info about group rides, info sessions, pub nights, or how to set up an information session at your workplace, contact us at [email protected] and follow @MSBikeTours on Facebook for periodic updates.

Volunteers Volunteers are crucial to PwC MS Bike’s success. From helping to plan PwC MS Bike tours to assisting on event day, there is a volunteer position for everyone. As a volunteer, you will meet new people and have an impact on the lives of people affected by MS.

For more information on getting involved in a PwC MS Bike event in your community, please contact us at [email protected].

• Visit msbike.ca for a list of MS Friendly Bike Shops. They will do a free inspection and inform you if a tune up or adjustment is necessary (fees may apply).

• Join a cycling club. Ask the staff at your local bike store or search for one online. You can also speak with MS staff about joining a PwC MS Bike team for motivation.

• Go ride. Start your training ride with shorter distances like 15 to 20 kilometres and gradually increase it up to 60 kilometres. We will let participants know about their local training rides by e-mail and on our social media channels.

• Join the group PwC MS Bike Ontario on Strava and get inspired by your fellow riders.
