fears and assist you dur-ing this difficult time.
Stimberts businessoffers free senior careand placement.
In addition, the assis-
tance she offers isnt justrelated to seniors but toanyone who may needassisted living or full-time care.
What is your back-ground?
I was a social worker inWashington and I workedwith unwed pregnantmoms. Personal experi-ence is what got me into
this particular aspect ofthe field. It was the expe-rience I had with mygrandparents that led meinto this field. When Imoved to California, Iwas a care coordinatorfor another firm and, inOctober, I started thiscompany.
Who do you assist infinding a care facility? We help place people
who cant cook for them-selves, cant shower andcant take care of them-selves. This is oftentimessenior citizens but it alsoapplies to adults of all agegroups.
How do you know thatyoure placing a person in
the right facility for them?We try to make the
proper fit based on theirpersonalities and abili-ties. We also try to matcha patient with otherpatients who have abili-ties that are similar. Itsimportant for us to get toknow the person we are
helping so that they canbe properly placed.
How do you go aboutmaking that connection?
I get to know my clientsfirst and then we take apersonal tour at the facil-ities that might be a goodmatch. Once a client isplaced, I follow up withthe client and the facilityto make sure that it is a
good fit.
What is something youwould like individuals toknow?
Seniors dont have tolose their independencewhen they move into anassisted-living situation. They can be as inde-
pendent as theyre ableto.
Residents often havefears that their quality oflife will change becausethey will no longer be in
their own surroundings. How do you address theseconcerns?
The quality of life usu-ally actually increasesbecause they are nolonger alone (if theyvelived alone). There isalways someone to talk
to, make friends with, play games. There areorganizations that matchin-home visiting care-
givers with patients sim-ilar interests in activities, hobbies, favorite TVshows, music, knitting, sports and just aboutanything else you canthink of. They really justneed some friendly com-panionship.
Moving into an assisted-living facility is expensive. How would a move likethis be possible for some-one on a limited income?
There are programs out
there, depending onwhere a client lives. Thereis a program, Adopt anelder, where they sup-plement to help peopleget a patient into a carehome. If a client qualifies, then MediCal becomespart of the solution. I cansometimes work withcare homes to get lowerincomes.
Whats a final thoughtthat you would like thereaders to know?
I like helping people, even if someone needs tojust call me and cry onmy shoulder. Caregiversneed someone to ventwith.

Weve all seen the heart-breaking commercialsthat show abandoned
and abused animals. The Society for the Preven-
tion of Cruelty to Animals(SPCA) airs those commercialsto bring awareness to abuse but
also to bring awareness to res-cuing animals. While Februaryis National Responsible PetOwner month, being a respon-sible pet owner is somethingthat we should be every day ofthe year.
Bringing a new pet into thehome is something thatshouldnt be taken lightly.
Adding a pet into the family isexpensive and requires a lot oftime.
However, more importantly,it is one of the most rewardingexperiences any family canhave. The companionship, joyand laughter that a pet canbring outweighs any of the neg-ative aspects.
To have a happy and healthyfurry, gilled or winged familymember is an ongoing process.Regardless of whether you'rebringing home a puppy/kitten,rescuing a mature dog/cat orpurchasing your first aviary oraquatic companion, there are anumber of steps that allresponsible pet owners contin-

Part of being a responsible pet owner is getting your pet out to exercise. By taking their dogfor a run on the beach, Ali Brown and Mike Murphy get exercise along with their dog, Harper.Don't forget that when it's cold outside and you wear a coat, your pet is probably cold as well.

uously follow.Just as all pets are unique, so
are their needs. Some animalswill benefit from training andgrooming. Others, such as fish, wont require much more than a
healthy, nutritious and cleanenvironment. If you're a dog lover, then
training your best friend issomething from which every-one will benefit.
According to the SPCA, theNo. 1 reason for dogs ending upin shelters is because of behav-ior problems. Whether you trainthem to do tricks or you trainthem for social reasons, its nev-er too late to teach an old dog
new tricks.Adopting a pet from the SPCA
is a wonderful way to bring anew member into the familyand comes with built-in bene-fits. In addition to the SPCAhelping you determine whetherthis is a good time for you toadopt or if the desired animal isa good fit to your family, the
organization will also makesure that your new pet is spayedor neutered. It is a state law thatthe SPCA cannot surrender an
animal to a new home withoutthe pet having the required sur-gery.
Feeding your pet a nutritious
and balanced diet is essentialfor their health and well-being.
According to Crystal Piersonof Lincolns Fashion Fo Paws,When an animal is brought infor grooming, we can tell
whether or not it has a healthydiet. If it doesnt, its coat andskin can be dry, brittle and flaky, and it can develop health prob-lems.
Pearson said that a healthydiet is important for the ani-mals coat and well-being.Grooming your pet doesnt justinvolve giving them a bath andhaircut. Nails, anal glands, eyes, ears and teeth are all parts thata good groomer will pay atten-
tion to at the pets appointment.Groomers are even sometimesthe ones who notice anunknown health problem inyour pet and might recom-mend a visit to the vet.
Making sure your pet has aclean environment is crucial forits health, as well as the familys.
Whether your pet lives in a
cage, has a litter box or goesoutside, cleaning up after yourpet is a priority. If you take yourdog for a walk, it is irresponsibleand unhealthy to not clean upyour animals waste. The waste
carries an array of parasites, canpose health problems and seepinto the ground water.
Because owning a pet meanskeeping it safe, making sureyour pet is licensed, as well ashaving up-to-date identifica-tion tags and being chippedwill aid in their return if theybecome lost.
Whether its exercise, nutri-tion, shelter or hygienic care, our pets deserve to have a
home where theyre well lovedand cared for.
Responsible Pet Ownershipmonth is not the only time youshould care for your pet, buthopefully, it will remind you ofhow important it is to take careof a family member that bringsyou so much joy, laughter andcompanionship.
Crystal Pearson of Fashion Fo Paws stresses that grooming isan important part of giving a dog and cat a healthy and hap-py life. Regular grooming keeps their coat clean, and just liketheir owners, pets enjoy going to the beauty shop to havea couple hours of pampering.

At this time of year, crock-pot cooking is some-times a preferred way of
cooking dinner because ofthe delicious comfort foodand soups that we can enjoyon a cold winter day. Howev-er, with the weather we'vebeen having this winter, acrockpot meal is a great wayto allow you some free timeto spend outside playing with
the kids or going for a walk.I don't know about you but
I'm always looking for a mealthat's easy, tastes good and issomething that will garner arepeat performance on yourdinner table.
I don't know anything thatcould be simpler thanCrockpot Buffalo Chicken.
It's definitely a dish that
should be enjoyed by thosewho like spicier food, although there are ways tocut the heat of the sauce(adding butter, barbecuesauce, water or even someyogurt).
Whats wonderful aboutthis recipe is that the chickencan be enjoyed in a variety ofways. Initially, we had sand-wiches, but with the left-overs, I made a Buffalo
Chicken Pizza (with home-made crust).
Buffalo chicken can be thecatalyst for sandwiches, piz-za, wraps, topping for pota-toes or even tacos. This is oneof those dishes that youcould get several meals out ofand wouldn't feel like you'reeating leftovers.
This is the perfect season for using your crockpot

Dinner is what always comes tomind when cooks think of usingtheir crockpot but there's no reason
you can't use it to make dessert.Imagine com-ing home and
having thesmell of applecrisp be thefirst item thatgreets you atthe door.
What good ismaking some-thing in thecrockpot if itisn't going tobe easy? Withthis recipe, the
most difficultaspect is cut-ting and peel-ing the apples!
I tried thisrecipe twice in one week and useddifferent apples both times.Depending on whether you likesomething more tart or a dessertthat's a little sweeter will be whatdictates the type of apples youinclude.
I also came to the conclusion that
this would be great to put into abaked pie shell.
CROCKPOT APPLE CRISP
4 to 5 cups peeled and sliced apples (GrannySmith for a tarter dessert and Fuji or Macintoshfor a sweeter one)
2 tablespoons flour 1/3 cup granulated sugar or Splenda 1/3 cup raisins, dried cranberries or cherries 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2/3 cup quick cooking or regular rolled oats 3 tablespoons melted butter 3/4 cup brown sugar
Put apples in the crockpot, toss with the flourand granulated sugar.
Stir in raisins, cinnamon and oats. Then pour 1cup water into mixture.
Pour melted butter over apples and then sprin-kle with brown sugar.
Cover and cook on low for four to six hours.
Crockpots aren't just for main courses; theycan be used to make delicious desserts. Imag-ine coming home to this apple cobbler aftera long day at work. This is comfort food at itsfinest.
What good is

he Lincoln AreaChamber of Com-merce had a mar-
velous year in 2013. Letus first thank Mark Lusterfor his leadership as pres-ident for the past 2 1/2years. What a great job hedid in moving the cham-ber forward.
In his last newsletter, you saw some of theaccomplishments thatoccurred during this past
year. In 2013, we had 63new members join andhad another successfulyear from a revenue andearnings perspective.Once again, the Lincolnchamber ended the year
in the black. As we move into 2014,
the chamber has sharp-ened its focus. In theNovember board retreat,
we came up with newvision and mission state-ments and Id like to sharethem with you.
Vision StatementThe vision of the Lin-
coln Area Chamber ofCommerce is to be theleading resource for con-necting business andcommunity in the region.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Lin-coln Area Chamber ofCommerce is to advocatefor business and be aresource for the commu-
nity.In 2014, my theme will
be We A.R.E together.A.R.E. means Advocate,Resource and Everyone.
Every business hasworked very hard to sur-vive the economic down-turn since 2008 and thechamber was no excep-tion. In 2009 through2012, we focused onmembership and eventincome to keep the
chamber viable. In 2013,we began to be moreexternally focused andprovided a number ofactivities for members notprovided before, includ-ing, but not limited to, theLeadership Lincoln acad-emy, the Lodi Study Mis-sion, the EconomicDevelopment Forum andthe beginning of a Politi-cal Action Committee.
In 2014, we will contin-
ue with more externally-focused activitiesdesigned to advocate forthe business communityand to be a resource forresidents and businessesin our area. It will takeeveryone participating, connecting and working
together to make thishappen. So I ask you tobe more active in thechamber this year. Thosewho participate receivemuch in return. I onlystarted participating in2009 and it has paid greatdividends for my businessand it will for yours if youonly get involved. So letswork together becauseWe A.R.E Together andhave a great year.
Lastly, Id like to leaveyou with a sense of howwe did financially thispast year compared to2012 and our 2013 budg-et. I was pleased with theresults and hope you willagree. I would like toannounce that there will

e have seen a recent shiftin the market. While inter-est rates remain low, the
investors have pulled out of themarket place due to the highersales prices over the last two
years.Inventory continued to
decrease through the middle of2013 and then began to go backup toward the end of the year.
Given that the home priceswent up 35-plus percent frommid 2011 to mid 2013, we seem
to have reached a cruising alti-tude for the time being. Pricesare stable and steady, althoughnot going up at the rate they
were at the earlier part of 2013.Average price per square foot
for Lincoln was $175, an increaseof 22.4 percent compared to thesame period last year. The medi-
an sales price for homes in Lin-coln from Oct. 13 to Jan. 14 was$331,000 based on 213 homesales. Compared to the sameperiod one year ago, the medianhome sales price increased 18.5
percent and the number ofhome sales decreased 26.8 per-cent.
The average listing price forhomes for sale was $417,303 forthe week ending Jan. 15, whichrepresents an increase of 2 per-cent, or $8,296, compared to theprior week. Seventy-nine per-
cent of the homes sold in 60 daysor less. Of those, 53 percent soldin 30 days or less.
While this winter season maybe the first time we have seen a
seasonality in the last number ofyears, homes that are pricedright are still selling in the first 30to 60 days. Generally, manyinvestors have pulled out of themarket, as prices have increased35 percent over the last two
years. Conventional buyersmake up the biggest cross sec-
tion of the buyers out there cur-rently. More than 50 percent areconventional buyers.
From mid 2011 to mid 2013,the prices were going up 1.5 per-cent per month on average. Thefourth quarter of 2013 and thefirst quarter of 2014 prove tohave leveled off.
Now more than ever, if you arelooking to sell or buy, make sure
you have an experienced realestate agent, not a part-timer.
Also, it is a good idea to have a
comprehensive discussion witha lender to ensure you have asolid financial package puttogether.
