Grand Knight’s Report
What’s inside
Laguna Council # 11236 has made it to 2018!
Before you know it, we’ll be electing new officers. I am grateful to Mike Blakey, Camilo Pizarro, Joe
Thomas, Larry Fernandez, Roy Tufts, Carl Gregsby, Romeo Gonsalvo, Ed Casey, Gus Azacarte,
Joe Wilhelm, Earl Gray, and Iggy Lopez – Alvarez for their work in the Council. I want to also
thank Fr. Leon and Fr. Ed for their support of the Knights of Columbus. Without their support we
would not be where we are today.
We sold roses that benefitted Sacramento Life, We sold pies which benefitted our Adopt a Family Pro-
gram, We sold fireworks that support our Parish Ministries throughout the year. The Kraft’s Faire sup-
ports out Scholarship Program which last year 3 graduating SEAS students were awarded $1,000.00
scholarships to help defray the cost of Catholic High School education.
Almost weekly, I asked for help in setting up the Fr. Phillip Wells Hall and 25 guys usually show up! We
managed to set a record ( with the help of SEAS Parents and the Boy Scouts ) in setting up the Parish
Festival tents and booths….3 hours! We probably will never equal that time but WOW!
Our strength is only as strong as our members. I have Worthy Past Grand
Knights such as WPGK Terry Rees, WPGK Iggy Lopez-Alvarez, WPGK Tim
Fukuda, and WPGK Carlos Llarena to ask for advice and guidance. Here’s
a hint, you can call Terry at 5:30am and he picks up! Don’t tell him I said
that.
I can’t thank all the Council Knights enough who stepped up and will step
up to make this a good year for Laguna Council # 11236.
Thank you and God Bless,
Grand Knight Rich Thompson

Faithful Navigator’s Message

JAN 2018
Beloved Brother Sir Knights!
The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from com-
plete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. I say to
myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” (Lamentations 3:22-24)
As we step into another year, I want to thank you for lifting me up this past year,
especially when I most needed your support. Years come and years pass, but
what it takes to make them worthwhile is the unconditional love we give and re-
ceive, the wonderful memories we create and store, and the zest with which we
offer to live our faith fully. You have given me these and much more in 2017, and I know there will be
more to come from you in 2018!
I want to congratulate the Assembly for achieving the Star Assembly Award. To win this award, we
had to: Earn the Fourth Degree Civic Award for outstanding implementation of patriotic programming;
Enter the To Be a Patriot competition; Meet the Assembly new member recruitment goal of 7%; Submit
the Report of Officers Elected by July 1; Submit the Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity by January 31;
Submit the Annual Assembly Audit Report by June 30; and Publish a monthly newsletter for Assembly
members. Good job!
We are, along with Bishop Bell Assembly, sponsoring a Valentine’s Dinner-Dance on February 24,
2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church Hall (8720 Florin Road, Sacramento). This will be a buffet dinner fea-
turing tri-tip and chicken, followed by a DJ dance party. This is an adults-only event to raise funds for
our neighbor Assembly, and we will receive one-third of net proceeds. All parishioners from St. Paul, St.
Maria Goretti, and Good Shepherd are invited for this joint party.
It is time to start thinking about recruiting new candidates for the Fourth Degree. Our 4th Degree Ex-
emplification will be April 21, 2018 at the usual Doubletree Hotel (2001 Point West Way, Sacramento).
Our “quota” for this year is six new members. There are three 2nd and 3rd Degree exemplifications
scheduled (January 13 at St. Dominic, Benicia; March 3 at St. John the Evangelist, Carmichael; and April
14 at St. Paul, Sacramento) prior to the 4th Degree, for any of our Brothers in the Council to advance to
the 3rd Degree in time to attend the 4th Degree exemplification. Reach out to our Council Brothers and
encourage them to move up to the 4th Degree.
Our Color Corps continues to be one of the most active in the Northern California District. You probably
have heard about the new uniforms that are being rolled out. Our Worthy Master, SK TW Starkweather,
told the Officer Installation attendees that full implementation of the new uniform won’t be until the end
of Columbian Year 2019, so for the remaining 6 months of the current Columbian Year and all of Colum-
bian Year 2018-19, our current regalia will be the “official” uniform in the Northern California District.
Good Shepherd Parish will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary during 2018. Please keep an eye in the La-
guna Knightline and the Parish bulletin for details about upcoming events. We will need all the help we
can get from the Assembly members to support this celebration.
We all know that with every new year comes new challenges and new joys in our lives. I wish you cour-
age, hope and faith to overcome the hurdles you will surely face. And may God’s peace be always with
you.
“The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.” (G.K. Ches-
terton)
God Bless! Vivat Jesus! - SK Terry F. Rees, Ph.D.

We are inviting beginners to attend our drill training sessions; most of our training sessions last approxi-
mately 2 hrs. Drill sessions will be announced soon for the beginning of our new season. We will be cov-
ering basic marching procedures and safe sword movements. Most of all, the drills learned will be very
beneficial for all Church Celebrations and Public Functions.
Our more advanced members will have a chance to try out for our St. John Paul II, Competition Team.
St. John Paul ll, Assembly 3504, has been Northern California Champions for the last two years.
“Become a Color Corps Member – You will be glad you did.”
St. John Paul ll, Color Corps has been very active snice the beginning of this last year (2017) with Church
Celebrations, Brother Knights Funerals, Confirmations Celebrations and other Religious Functions. We
have had numerous requests throughout Sacramento Diocese to assist other Church Parishes for their
Celebrations. Our Color Corps took part in the Elk Grove 2017, Veterans Day Parade and assisted in our
Armed Forces Military Ministry for Memorial Day and Veterans Day Celebrations.
During this last year Our St. John Paul ll, Assembly 3504 was saddened by having to say farewell to our
Faithful Assembly Friar SK Lester Menor, who was transferred another Parish recently. We wish him well.
Our prayers and good thoughts are with him always.
This year we are also gladdened, to welcome Rev. Fr. Edgardo J Garcia -Velazquez to Good Shepherd
Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus Laguna Council 11236. Fr. Ed will soon be advancing 3rd De-
gree Knighthood, and 4th degree in April.

present Regalia uniform, can rest until 2019. The new uniform is not required until July 1, 2019.

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...
Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed
hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the
rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep
up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt
to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I
had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demon-
strates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending
comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Worthless humans!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was
placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I
could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement
was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how
to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tor-
mentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this
again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The
dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be
more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with
the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My cap-
tors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is
safe. . . . For now.
