From the Rabbi

The Blessing of UnityOne of the most beautiful passages of

the Torah is the commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Lev. 19:18) This simple statement, passed down to us through the millennia, is still relevant in our lives.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel inter-preted this verse as a pressing call to so-cial action. “How can we love our neigh-bor,” he asked, “when we flee from him and leave him abandoned, congested in the neglected ghettos of the inner city?” Although Heschel was writing in the con-text of the Civil Rights Movement and his partnership with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I feel the power of his question in our own day.

From the tragedy of Ferguson, Missouri to the horror of Charleston, South Caro-lina, the divisions in our society involving class, culture and race have been laid bare to us. In response, the Black Lives Mat-ter movement has made itself heard on the national stage, even affecting the cam-paigns of prospective Presidential candi-dates. Recognizing the historical Jewish connection to the Civil Rights Movement and the fight for social justice, it is impor-tant that our community observe Martin Luther King Day in the most fulfilling manner possible.

Once again, I have invited the First Bap-

tist Church of Pittsfield to partner with us for a special Kabbalat Shabbat service on the Friday of MLK weekend, at 7:00 PM on January 15th. Together, we’ll recom-mit ourselves to the difficult – but holy – work of acting for social justice. Once again, our choirs join together to lift our spirits in prayer and praise. Finally, it’s my great delight that my friend, Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross, will share the bimah with me on this powerful and uplifting evening. An oneg will follow the service.

Let us remain open to the guiding force of our tradition; may we find new love for our neighbors throughout this new year. Together, let us bring healing to our com-munity and the blessings of equality and justice to our troubled world.

A Celebration of

Welcome New MembersBy Rhoda Kaminstein

Welcome new members Helen and Steven Radin of Pittsfield. The couple moved to Great Barrington in 1995 and became very active members of Aha-vath Shalom Congregation with which they still maintain their affiliation.

Steve was an Educational Administrator for the New York City Board of Edu-cation after having taught math and science, being an elementary school princi-pal and doing city wide computer education. Helen taught in JCC pre-schools in Staten Island and Teaneck, New Jersey.

The Radins moved to Pittsfield in 2005. They have 2 sons - one in San Fran-cisco and one in East Greenbush who has 17 year old twin daughters.

They are especially enjoying Torah Plus with Rabbi Josh and meeting other Temple members.

Shabbat Shira and

Tu B’ ShevatFriday, January 22at 5:00 PM

Join us for our annual Shabbat Shira service, as we commemorate the Israelites making the Exodus out of Egypt with a family-friendly Friday evening service full of song.

We will also celebrate the upcoming holiday of Tu b’Shevat, the New Year of the Trees, where we will be exploring the enduring connections between Judaism and

nature. The service will feature both our adult and student leaders.

A dairy dinner will be served following the service, featuring those fruits that are symbolically linked to Tu b’Shevat. There is a $5 per person charge for the dinner, with a maximum of $20 per family.

This event is open to all members of the community. RSVP to the Temple office by

Letter from the Presidents

Progress Being Made

In November Temple’s Board of Directors hosted a Congre-gational Meeting. At the meeting we shared a lovely pot luck supper. Thank you to those who brought all of the great food. I heard comments that it was one of the best meals they had had at Temple.

Following the dinner, Rob Proskin presented a slide show of the progress we have made in the accessibility project, and things yet unfinished. The unfinished things include: recover-ing the benches in the sanctuary or replacing them with new chairs that can be moved around or snapped together, carpet-ing in the sanctuary and on the steps, painting in the sanctuary, lobby and stairways and some electrical work.

“So when will this be done?” you ask. That is a great ques-tion. We will finish when the rest of the fundraising is com-plete. We have $345,000 in total pledges and we need to raise at least another $50,000.

Thank you to those who have already made pledges and sent in donations. To those who have forgotten or who haven’t got-ten around to it yet, the time is NOW. Reach into your heart and find a way to make a donation, either all at once or spread over 3 years. We can charge it to a credit card or you can have payments sent to Temple from your bank.

Maybe you and your loved ones have already used and en-joyed our elevator, or the ramp up to the bima. Maybe some family member is grateful that we have an elevator so they can easily attend a B’nai mitzvah or a wedding. PLEASE help us to complete this project. Mail in your donations, marked L’dor Va’dor Fund, or drop them at the temple office Tues.- Thurs-days 9:00 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and say hi to Keren while you are there. A Happy New Year to all, Nancy Gagnon

F or those who couldn’t be present, I offer these thoughts:

With about 30 members in attendance, we first enjoyed a bit of schmoozing and a delicious pot luck din-ner provided by our Board of Directors, and Alba Passerini and Jackie Shayer! Thank you to all!

Then, Andy Hochberg and Rob Proskin were thanked and lauded for their service as Chairmen of the L’dor Va’Dor Accessibility Campaign. I invited ALL congregants to pledge at any level of giving, as at the time of the meet-ing, only 30% of our congregants pledged funds toward the Campaign. Rob Proskin, the Rabbi, and members of leadership then did a beautiful job of reviewing our renovations to date: a new easement to a new walkway; THE ELEVATOR!; the social hall level handicapped bath-room; the lowered Bima; the railed ramp; the new sound

enhancing system; and, the painting of the library and

some areas of the sanctuary. They then presented the still-

needed finishes for the project: fur-ther painting of the sanctuary and entrance; carpet instal-lation; lighting changes; refinishing the flooring; adjusting the line of sight to the Bima; and, for our seating needs in the sanctuary, they addressed cost-effective options to re-place the benches with durable armed chairs. The cost to replace our current worn benches with similar benches is approximately $18, 000. The cost for armed chairs is about $26,000. With regard to the chairs, we discussed wear, functionality, cost, aesthetics, and the benefits of changing the seating arrangements from time to time to foster cre-ative worship and programming experiences. and Beautification Committee, Rabbi Josh and the Man-agement Team recommended that when we can afford new seating, we should invest in chairs. While there was some disagreement about the look of the chairs with the tradition of benches amid the need for durability and sharp budget constraints, the majority favored chairs. As of this publication, the Board will have already voted to commit to a plan, once funds become available. Whatever is de-cided, Rob Proskin will provide the best affordable seating available only at COST through his company, BBE. Thank you Rob and members of the House Committee for your efforts, talents, and priceless ‘in-kind’ benefits to make our temple home accessible, while being most thoughtful about cost, aesthetics and temple traditions.

W hile the congregational meeting size was less than the typical attendance at meetings, it was no less poignant. Some members of the

congregation expressed delight about the Accessibility Project to date. Some expressed concern about the low attendance of the congregational meeting, wondering if it means low interest to finish the project or not support any further change to the temple building. Some won-dered just in general where the support and interest does lie in our congregation. My response and that of oth-ers, suggested that perhaps lower attendance was likely impacted by a cold night in November, with many of our part-time congregants now residing in warmer climates. But, the concerns related to attendance and support do resonate with me. It would seem we are a congregation,

not unlike myriad congregations across the country, with a changed demographic that has limited and varying ca-pacity to fully develop human and financial resources. This stated, it would now seem the right time to fulfill the desire of Rabbi Josh, which is to further explore our mission and vision of Temple Anshe Amunim. More will be discussed about this in the months to come!

We are a congregation in need of funds: In order to sustain the programming and staff we require, we need to fill a $75,000 gap for our current operating budget. In order to complete the Accessibility Project, we still need approximately $52,000. And, as we have largely heard from congregants about the desire to establish an an-nual fund for a cantorial soloist, we will need to raise ap-proximately $7,000 for this cost. Toward all this, we need members to pay their dues, make voluntary contributions, make and meet pledges, and develop a rigorous fundrais-ing program.

Thank you! When you receive letters and follow up calls requesting your pledges to the Accessibility Campaign, please find it in your heart to oblige at any level. EVERY dollar will count! Donations can be made in a lump sum, or pledged over 3 years. And, please don’t stop there. If you haven’t fulfilled your dues obligation or yet made a vol-untary contribution toward our Operating Budget, please consider doing so as soon as possible. And, please consider contributing to our cantorial soloist fund. Michael and I will be chairing CAFE ANSHE, the first FUNDRAISING PROGRAM for our music and cantorial soloist program. It will be a LIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE featuring our very own Michael and Erin Duffy (Duffy and Erin Acoustic Duo); Mark Franklin, Alan Gold and other known musical talent. It will be held on Saturday, May 21 from 6:45-10:00 PM. SAVE THE DATE!

We are a congregational community that desires rich and special worship and study; fabulous adult and youth edu-cation opportunities; inspiring programs; fun social occa-

sions; and beautiful musical experiences. As we want to continue to enjoy all these facets of temple life

in our accessible, aesthetically pleasing tem-ple home, please make your financial contribution to our Campaign. Please also give of your time and talents! To

sustain all that is dear to us in our congregational lives, we must be active partners to further develop

and sustain our resources! Thanks for bearing with my commentary here.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any member of leadership to further discuss. And, I hope

to see you at the next Board Meeting, January 14, 2016, at 7 PM!

With my best wishes for a 2016 filled with light, health and peace!

Deb Cole-Duffy

TAA and First Baptist Church to Commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. with Joint Service

On Friday, January 15, 2016 Rabbi Josh Breindel of Temple Anshe Amunim and Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross of First Baptist Church will hold an innovative service in commemoration of Martin Luther King Day. This joint event will be held at Temple Anshe Amunim at 7:00 p.m., and is open to all members of the community. A light dessert reception will follow.

The service, which has become an annual event, will reflect the joint themes of social action and awareness, and will include inspirational readings as well as music by the Temple Anshe Amunim and First Baptist Church choirs.

“Reverend King lived the mantra to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’… meaning, no matter the neighbor’s thought pattern or belief. Lovingly, as Rabbi Josh and I come together with our congregations, are we not living the dream of neighbor-focused love?” noted Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross.

Rabbi Josh commented,” Reverend King taught that people of faith must stand together. Pastor Sheila and I hope to demonstrate the truth of this lesson. By singing together, by praying together, by learning together, we feel that we can show hope and healing to our community.”

Dear Temple Anshe Amunim,

Thank you so much for the scholarship to Crane Lake Camp. I am so thankful to be able to spend part of my summer at Crane Lake.

Edna Miller Recognized for 3000 Exercise Visits

Edna Miller was honored by Berkshire Health Systems for reaching an admirable milestone: 3000 visits to their Cardiac Rehabilitation exercise program! A plaque com-memorating her achievement hangs at the Center.

Edna has been using the BHS gym since 1997, where she uses the exercise bike and treadmill four times per week. At 92, Edna credits her faithful early morning ex-ercise as the “reason she is here”, and encourages every-one to exercise a minimum of three times per week.

Jewish Federation Supports Religious Education

Temple Anshe Amunim gratefully acknowledges re-ceipt of a $14,986 allocation from the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires in support of our students’ Jewish ed-ucation. Students attending our Saturday program re-ceived $351, while students attending both the Saturday and Wednesday CHAI program received a $671 tuition subsidy.

This funding is a vital part of our school budget and we highly encourage every member of Temple Anshe Amu-nim to contribute to the Federation’s Annual Campaign.

Office Staff Changes - We said goodbye; and hello, again!

As you know from congregational emails, in Novem-ber Kathy Cowan left her position as Office Adminis-trator/Executive Assistant to the Rabbi for personal reasons. On behalf of temple leadership and the con-gregation, I extended Kathy our gratitude for her ser-vice to temple and our warmest wishes.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, I delightfully announced that Keren Weiner stepped forward to serve as Interim Office Administrator/Executive Assistant to the Rab-bi. Many know Keren as a dear congregant, and that she previously held the position of Office Administra-tor and Executive Assistant to the Rabbi for 4+ years. Keren busily began work on December 1. With Keren’s smiles, warmth and love of this congregation, we are so grateful for her willingness to serve our temple again!

As Keren, in the next few months, has some profes-sional and personal obligations, she will be filling this position in an interim capacity through March 31. From January 1- March 31, Keren will work 30 hours a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9-5; and on Fridays, 9-3. THE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAYS during this period; however, phone and email messages will be checked. Emergency contact information will be provided. Moving forward, in late February, early March, the Management Team, Rabbi, and Keren will consider temple needs and next steps toward filling the position by April 1, 2016. Of course, once a plan is established, and approved by the Board, I will be in touch with you regarding this next phase.

As we warmly welcome Keren back to the temple of-fice, she is joined by a talented temple staff! I know our congregation, leadership and Rabbi will be well served by their individual and team efforts.

Thank you again for your patience and understand-ing during this time of transition. As always, if the need arises, please do not hesitate to be in touch with our Co-Presidents or members of the Management Team.

Wishing you and your families a Happy and Healthy 2016!

Berkshire Bounty Needs Volunteer DriversTemple Anshe Amunim is a long-standing supporter of this community effort, and we are currently in need of drivers. Volunteers go to various food stores (e.g., Bartlett’s, Guido’s, Panera, Crescent Creamery), pick up their food donations, and deliver it to organizations that feed the hungry. The commitment is approximately once every 6 weeks for about 2 ½ hours, and requires some lifting and stairs. For more information, contact Sue or Joel Colker at (413) 443-5770 or [email protected].
