Newsletter 18/2017 10 August 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners As a matric teacher and a mom of a matric daughter, I would like to make this editorial about the Grade 12s. For years I had heard about the horror of this year, but, because I have taught matrics for fifteen years, I did not approach the year with the kind of trepidation felt by many parents. As these young adults approach the end of their twelve year journey, I find myself, for the first time, feeling the stress and exhaustion that so many matric learners are faced with every day. They are reminded time and again that this year is what it is all about; that it’s what they have been working towards over the past twelve years and that they should spend every waking moment studying to ensure that they have a future. As a mom, I understand the fear of having your child living on your couch for the rest of their lives, but I also want to take this opportunity to find a moment of calm in the panic and chaos. Yes, this is an important year: we all want to do our best and we all want our children to have the future we have pictured for them over the past twelve years, but, I have had to learn that we also need to take a breath. It is impossible to control everything; allow your children to take a breath too. Spending all their available time buried in books is not good for anyone – for parents and children alike.

You have spent twelve years teaching them the important stuff like work ethic and balance. This is their time to use it. Trust them. Let them use the values you have instilled in them to conquer this last obstacle. It will all work out in the end. Collection of 2016 Matric Certificates & Art Portfolios

Grade 12s who matriculated last year may collect their Matric certificates and Art Portfolios from the Front Office during school hours.

INTER-HOUSE DEBATING COMPETITION

The annual Inter-House Debating Competition will be held between 28 August and 2 September. Anyone can participate, regardless of whether they have debated before or not. The debates will be in the form of a SPAR debate, where two people argue opposite sides of a fun or controversial topic. Each SPAR should take ±15 minutes and does not require lengthy preparation. Participants will be awarded speaker points for their House. Those who wish to participate must attend the SPAR Debate Training on Monday, 21 August from 14h20 to 15h20 in Classroom D17. Upon completion of the training, participants can sign up by choosing a slot and topic on the roster that will be put up outside D17. For extra information, please speak to Miss Henry in D17.
