    Starting SPRINGBREAK If installation is successful, you returnto the Autorun menu where thebutton PLAY SPRING BREAK is nowvisible. Click this button to launchSPRING BREAK.

    You can also start SPRING BREAK byclicking the START button on theWindows taskbar, highlightingPrograms\Eidos Interactive\SpringBreak\ and then clicking SPRINGBREAK. The game will now launch. Ifyou choose to place a SPRING BREAKicon on your desktop at the end of theinstallation, you can also launch thegame by double-clicking this icon.

    Uninstalling SPRINGBREAK In the unlikely event that you want touninstall SPRING BREAK, point your cursorat Start\Programs\EidosInteractive\Spring Break\, clickUNINSTALL SPRING BREAK and follow theonscreen instructions.

    Should this fail to work, clickStart\Settings\Control Panel\ anddouble-click the ADD/REMOVEPROGRAMS icon. Scroll down the listuntil you see SPRING BREAK and thenclick ADD/REMOVE to uninstall thegame. SPRING BREAK can also beuninstalled from the Autorun menu byclicking the appropriate option.

    halfway there. SPRINGBREAK realistically simulates real lifebeach resorts and human behaviors,while trying not to take itself tooseriously — in fact not very seriously atall. As the owner of the resorts, you needto react to the needs of your guests,manipulate prices and deal with theday-to-day running of your humanplayground. You are there to provide thebest possible holiday experience for yourguests while trying to make a quickbuck for yourself. Along the way,they’ll experience all the joys and theheadaches of a typical package holiday;from romance and excitement todiscovering that too much partyingand sun really is a bad thing.

    winningEach scenario in the game hascertain objectives that must be metin order for you to complete thelevel and progress to the next one.Failure to do so would meanbankruptcy and ultimately losingthe game.

    tooltips Resting your cursor over certaingraphics in the game, such asbuttons, icons or buildings, willdisplay a tooltip — a small boxproviding simple information onthat item. Handy if you’re not quitefamiliar with all the functions ofSPRING BREAK.

    Manual ConventionsThroughout SPRING BREAK™ and thismanual, we refer to the followingcommon conventions that are simplefor new players and familiar to moreestablished gamers.

    CLICK: Pressing the left mousebutton. Generally used to confirm allactions in the game, such as laying abuilding or clicking a button.

    DOUBLE-CLICK: There may be someinstances where you’ll need todouble-click the left-mouse button(press the mouse button twicequickly in succession).

    RIGHT-CLICK: Pressing the rightmouse button. Generally used in-game to scroll the screen (holddown). Also cancels follow-cams.

    MOUSE WHEEL: If it’s supported byyour mouse, you can use the mousewheel to move scrollbars up and downand rotate building and scenery

  • THE MAINMENU

    The Main Menu displayed at thestart of the game is your portal intothe SPRING BREAK experience.

    starting a new gameTo start a brand new game, clickSTART from the Main Menu. You aretaken to the Map screen displayingthe 12 scenarios in SPRING BREAK. Onlythe first three scenarios are availablewhen you first start SPRING BREAK. Asyou meet the objectives and complete

    the current scenario the next one willbe unlocked and become available.

    continuing an existing gameTo continue an existing game from thepoint you last saved, click LOAD from theMain Menu, click the saved game you wishto load and then click the LOAD button.Your saved game will now load. If you havemultiple saved games, you can click thearrows at the side of the screen to scrollthrough and find the one you want to load.

    sandbox modeSandbox Mode offers you free rein tocreate the resort of your dreams on anypreviously completed scenario without theneed to meet the original objectives. Onlybuildings and islands that you’ve unlockedthrough completing the scenarios in thenormal game will be available to you.

    creditsA lot of people have worked longhours to bring you the wonderfulexperience that is SPRING BREAK. Tosee who was behind it all, you canview the credits from the Extras

    Menu (available from the MainMenu).

    THE MAP SCREENWhen you start a newgame,continue anexistinggame orwant to playin SandboxMode, you aretaken to theMap screen. TheMap screendetails your progress through SPRINGBREAK, highlighting the islands as theybecome available. Clicking an islandwill display information about theselected scenario on the right side ofthe screen. Once you have selected ascenario to play, click the PLAY button.You can only play scenarios that you’vealready unlocked.

    INGAME OPTIONSMENUYou can access the ingame settings menuby pressing the F2 key, or by clicking theSETTINGS button on the Interface. Fromhere you can change game settings, videosettings and audio settings.

    saving your current game You can save your gameat any time by clicking

    the SAVE GAME buttonor pressing the F4 key.

    The Save Scenario panelappears. With EMPTY

    highlighted, click SAVE atthe top of the panel; your

    progress will now be saved. SPRING BREAKautomatically labels the save game withsome current information about thescenario name and a time stamp, savingyou the bother of having to name yoursaved games.

    You can overwrite a previous saveby clicking the appropriate slot and

    then clicking the SAVE button. Youwill be prompted to choose whetheror not to overwrite the saved game.To delete a saved game, click the oneyou want to delete and then click theDELETE button. Again, you’ll beprompted whether or not to delete thesaved game.

    loading a saved game You can load a previouslysaved game at any timeduring SPRING BREAK. Clickthe LOAD GAME buttonto open the LoadScenario panel. Select agame and click LOAD.

    Your saved game will nowload. Please note you will lose your

    current game unless you save the gamebeforehand! You can also load savedgames from the Main Menu.

    restarting a scenarioYour resort has falleninto a dilapidatedstate and guests areleaving faster thanjet setters who justmaxed out theircredit cards? Thenclick RESTARTSCENARIO to replay thescenario from the beginning.

    changing your video settingsFrom the ingame Video Menu youcan configure various displayoptions within SPRINGBREAK.

    RESOLUTIONS:Depending on yourgraphics card, you canchoose up to fourresolutions (640x480,800x600, 1024x768 and 1200x960) todisplay the game in by clicking theSCREEN RESOLUTION box and selecting

    a resolution from the drop downmenu. The higher the resolution,the better the game will look, butperformance on slower machinesmay be affected. If a resolution isnot displayed on the menu, thenit’s unsupported by your videocard. Please contact your hardwaremanufacturer for details.

    INCREASING PERFORMANCE: IfSPRING BREAK seems to be runningslowly, you can try toggling theSEA EFFECTS (animating sea) andLIGHTING EFFECTS (all nighttimelights on buildings and sceneryitems and the shadows cast bybuildings) OFF to increaseperformance.

    OBJECT OUTLINES: Outlinescharacters when they go behindstuff. Defaulted to OFF as we’re notfans, but hey, some people like it soit’s there if you want to use it.

    NUDGE SCROLLING: The Map Areascrolls when you place the cursor atthe edge of the screen. Again, youmay like it ... we do, so it’s defaultedto ON.

    changing your sound settings You can alter both the volumeof the MUSIC andSOUNDEFFECTS inSPRING BREAK byclicking theappropriatevolume controland sliding it tothe left to decrease and to the rightto increase the volume.

  • If you’ve never played this typeof game before, it’s importantto understand the basicterminology and controls usedthroughout this manual andSPRING BREAK. We’ve alreadytouched upon the controlterminology used. You cannotdirectly control what the guestsat your resort do, but you caninfluence their decisions!

    The Main WindowThis is your view into the wonderful

    microcosm of SPRING BREAK. You notonly watch the daily lives of all your

    guests here, but you can select yourguests and buildings to find out more

    about them, plan and build your resortand even manipulate certain buildingsin a bid to try and keep yourmoody guests happy. The MainWindow is divided into the Interfaceand the Map Area.

    The Map AreaThis area is used to control the view of yourresort. Everything you see and control iswithin the Map Area of the game.

    selecting within the map areaClicking a building, a staff member, a guestor piece of scenery will display certaincharacteristics relevant to them. Forexample, clicking a guest will select himor her and open a panel withinformation specific to that guest.

    scrolling the map areaNUDGE SCROLL: Move the

    mouse cursor to the edge of thescreen in any direction andhold it there; your viewpointwill shift in that direction.

    CURSOR KEYS SCROLL: You canalso use the cursor keys to scrollthe map. If this is your preferredscrolling method, NudgeScrolling can be disabled fromthe ingame Options Menu.

    FAST SCROLL: Nudge scroll notquick enough? Then hold downthe right mouse button and,while keeping the button pressed,move your mouse cursor aroundthe screen. You’ll notice theviewpoint will follow yourmovement — this is handy for thelarger levels later when you need toscroll somewhere quickly.

    mini-mapAt the top left of the MainWindow is a miniaturerepresentation of the overallMap Area — the Mini-Map.Buildings in your resort areshown as blue, staff aredetailed by red and guestsare represented by black.

    A rectangular green box on theMini-Map indicates the currently visible

    proportion of the Map Area. By clickinganywhere on the Mini-Map you can jumpto that part of the Map Area. Click theARROW button at the top of the Mini-Map to minimize it.

    objectives counter When you start ascenario, a counter forany specific objectivesis shown on the smallpanel to the left of theMain Window. This counterprovides indispensable at-a-glanceinformation on how close you are toachieving an objective. The ObjectivesCounter Map Area can beminimized in the sameway as the Mini-Map.~~~

  • The InterfaceThe Interface at the bottom of theMain Window allows full control overall manner of things in SPRING BREAK.Here’s a brief description of the mainfunctions and controls:

    BUILD BUTTON: Opens theConstruction panel,where you canbrowse availablebuilding types,find out theircharacteristics andstart construction ofthese buildingswithin your resort.

    SCENERY BUTTON: Opensthe Scenery panel, whereyou can browse availablescenery items, see theircharacteristics and buythem for your resort.

    Clicking the STAR button nextto the Resort Rating will display an

    overview of statistics for your

    current resort: theMap Area-area size,

    weather conditions,average temperature,

    known hazards, male/female appeal, total amount ofguests, staff and buildings, thenumber ofsceneryobjects andthe totalamount oflitter strewnabout.

    CURRENT TIME: Details thecurrent time of daydisplayed as a 24-hourclock.

    ARRIVAL TIME:Indicates the timethat thenext

    ship or busis due to arrive at

    your resort. Clicking theARRIVAL button will displayan overview of the scheduledarrival times and other usefulinformation.

    CASH: Displays thecash available tospend on your resort.Or not as the casemay be. Clicking theCASH button opens the

    Finance panel.

    POWER OUTPUTAND USAGE:

    The yellow barrepresents the total

    amount of power yourgenerators are

    outputting. The red barindicates total powerusage by all thebuildings within yourresort. Clicking thePOWER button to theleft of the powerconsumption bars

    will display the PowerInformation panel.

    MESSAGETICKER: Listsimportantmessages from yourstaff or generalinformation about your resort.Clicking the ARROW button to theright of the Ticker displays themessage history. Clicking theARROW to the right of themessage focuses yourview over the source ofthe report, if stillapplicable.

    STAFF SHORTCUTS:Each photographrepresents one ofyour staff types. If aphoto is blank, that stafftype is unavailable on the currentscenario. If a photo is semi-

    transparent, you don’t have any ofthat staff type employed.Constantly clicking a photo will

  • In order to getanywhere in SPRING

    BREAK, you’re going tohave to master the art of construction.Placing buildings and laying paths areeasy, but choosing the right ones andwhere to place them is the secret ofsuccess. There are multiple buildings foryou to choose from, all graduallybecoming available as you progressthrough the scenarios.

    Choose what buildings you want to laycarefully; you may have limited space, sovary your buildings in order to offerample day and night entertainment. Alsolook at the weather conditions for thescenario carefully — if it’s notorious forraining then a beach barbecue probablywouldn’t be a best seller.

    Every type of building takes a certainamount of time to constructdepending on the size of thebuilding and how many builders areassigned to that construction site.(Smaller buildings will appearalmost instantly while larger oneswill take much longer.)

    The ConstructionPanel

    Click the BUILD buttonon the Interface to

    open theConstruction panel.

    This is where youchoose the buildings

    you’ll construct. Threetabs at the side of

    the panelrepresentthe threemainconstructiongroups:

    Essential: All theessential staff,utility and amenity

    buildings.

    Food/Clubs:All land-based eating anddrinkingestablishmentsplus other

    types of entertainmentbuildings such as clubs.

    Leisure: All water andbeachactivities.

    Clicking abuildingdisplaysthe cost,poweruse andappeal to either sexon the left side of the Constructionpanel. It also details which building isrequired before this buildingbecomes available to construct. If abuilding is grayed out, then itrequires another building (or set ofbuildings) to be constructed andcompleted before becomingavailable.

    NOTE: You will not be able tochoose and construct a building ifyou do not have sufficient funds inyour account. The cost of thebuilding will be deducted from youraccount once you confirm whereyou wish to construct it.

  • Your cursor will change to a previewof the building and its floor plan.

    Whenever the placement of a buildingis unsuitable, the building will becomesemi-transparent and a red mark willappear indicating the invalid placementpoint. When a placement is valid, thepreview of the building will be solid; clickonce and the framework of the buildingwill be placed on the Map Area ready foryour builders to begin constructing. Yourbuilders will start work on the newbuilding immediately unless they aretending to other jobs at the time, in whichcase as many as are available will headtowards the new construction site.

    NOTE: Its important that you don’t placetoo many buildings down in one go,otherwise you may end up spreading yourbuilders around too thinly. Two buildersattending a building will complete the jobin half the time, three in a third, etc.

    You can rotate a currently selectedbuilding by pressing the Spacebar orpushing the mouse wheel up or downbefore you’ve confirmed placement ofthe building. This can sometimes allowyou fit the structure into a tight spotas the width and length of buildingsmay vary dramatically.

    selling a buildingAll buildings can be sold for about75% of their original cost price.Selling a building removes it and anystaff associated with it from the gameworld. Click thebuilding you wantto sell and thenclick theDEMOLISHbutton at the leftcorner of thepanel. The buildingwill then be ready for yourbuilders to dismantle as soon as anybecome available. Once a building hasbeen dismantled the funds are deposited

    in your account. Click a building atany time to display the

    progress of the dismantling.

    The BuildingInformation PanelClicking a building displays the BuildingInformation panel that allows you directcontrol over a wealth of options availableto that specific building. The name of thebuilding is shown at the top of the panel;

    clicking the ARROWSon either side of thebuilding name scrollsthrough all thebuildings withinyour resort. Thereare four tabs onthe Building

    Information panel(though this can vary from

    building to building):

    CASH FLOW: Details the income,costs, daily profit and average profit ofthat building and allows you to adjustprices associated withthat building.

    REPAIR: Lists thebuilding’s repair state,the amount of powerbeing consumed, itsage, last and totalbreakdowns, themaintenanceinspection shiftsand repair status.

    THOUGHTS:Shows thecurrent like anddislike thoughts of all theguests that have visitedthat building today.Clicking the GOTObutton to the right ofa guest’s name will

    open uptheindividualGuest Informationpanel.

    SETTINGS: Detailsspecifics relevant tothat building. Forexample, how manyempty rooms areavailable in your hotel

    or which events can bearranged on Beach Event Stage.If the Settings tab is notpresent, that building does nothave any additional informationor settings to be altered.

    In addition to the informationoffered within these tabs, theleft side of the BuildingInformation panel details theguest capacity and opening hoursof the building. Below this are twobuttons: OPEN and CLOSE.Clicking either will open or close

    the building to your guests, handyif you need to make urgent repairs to

    a building and don’t wish the gueststo continue using it.

    repairing and maintaining buildingsAll buildings have an associated “repairstate.” As buildings fall into a poor andultimately dangerous repair state they willonly work at reduced efficiency or closedown completely. Guests will also becomedismayed if they happen to use or walkpast a building and find it in anunacceptable state. Details of a building’srepair state can be found on theMaintenance tab. If a building requiresurgent attention, click the CALL MECHANICbutton at the bottom of the panel. Only aMechanic can repair buildings.

    requires power to run.On the Interface is a

    power consumptionbar that shows your

    total current poweroutput as yellow and

    current resort usage asred. The bars begin to

    flash when your resort is

    using more power than you aregenerating. Some buildingsautomatically shut down untilthere is sufficient power to runthem. Keeping your PowerGenerators in good repair isvitally important if you don’twant to plunge your resort intodarkness. When a buildingdoesn’t have sufficient power, aPower icon appears above it.

Unlikebuildings, youonly receive around20%-50% of funds back fordemolishing a scenery item andthe item will disappearimmediately from the Map Area.

    Guest and BuildingBrowser (building side)

    The Guest and Building Browser allowsyou to scroll through a complete list ofall the buildings and guests currentlywithin your resort, detailing overall

    statistics. For now we are just coveringthe building side of the Browser. Pleasesee “The Guest and Building Browser(guest side)” on page 22 for informationabout the guest side.

    The list of buildings in the browser canbe ordered by a variety of differentcriteria. To view the optionsfor buildings, click theDOWN ARROW buttonat the top of the Guestand Building browser.Then, clicking one of thefollowing filters willreorder the list so thatentries toward the tophave the greatest value.

    The filters available are:

    ALL: Lists all buildings alphabetically.

    REPAIR STATE: Shows the currentrepair state of your buildings.

    FAULTS IN LIFETIME: How manyfaults the building has had. If abuilding has had a high number offaults, you should decrease thegap between the amounts of daysyour mechanics come to visit.

    AGE: The age of the building.Older buildings are more proneto breaking down so requiremore regular maintenance tripsfrom your mechanics.

    POWER CONSUMPTION: Theamount of Power the building isconsuming.

    INCOME TODAY: How muchincome each building has had sofar today.

    COSTS TODAY: The amount ofcosts incurred by that building sofar today.

    PROFIT TODAY: Total amount ofprofit the building has made today.

    AVERAGE PROFIT: An average profitfor the building over the life of thebuilding.

    CUSTOMERS TODAY: The amount ofcustomers the building has had so fartoday.

    POPULARITY TODAY: How popular thebuilding is compared to the others today.

    OPEN: Whether a building is currentlyopen …

    CLOSED: … or closed.

    The SceneryPanel

    Guests love a beautifulresort and you can chooseto lay various sceneryitems such as paths,benches, plants andlights from theScenery panel accessedby clicking the SCENERYbutton on the Interface.Placing a scenery itemworks in the same way as placing abuilding except there’s no constructiontime added — all scenery items appearimmediately.

    Seven tabs represent the different typesof scenery items you can place: paths,furniture, plants, bushes, ornaments,trees and advertising boards. As youclick each scenery item its cost andappeal rating is shown at the top ofthe panel (if applicable).

    Unlike most other panels in SPRINGBREAK, the Scenery panelhas a couple of extracontrols:

    IN: Minimizes theScenery panel to theside of the screen.

    OUT: Returns theScenery panel back to

    its originalsize.

    CLOSE: Closesthe Scenerypanel.

    the importance of pathsGuests don’t like aimlessly

    wandering around for hourstrying to find things to do. They

    like to be guided there and thebest way of doing this is throughpaths. Paths are very important tothe success of your resort —guests are unlikely to use anyattractions or amenities unlessthere is a path to take them there!

    It’s also important that you planyour paths carefully — try to keepthem simple so they guide yourguests around your resort. Pathscan only be built on solid land thatis clear of any obstructions; theycannot be built on beaches, onwater, through trees and rocks orover other buildings.

    laying pathsFrom the PATH tab onthe Scenery panel, clicka piece of paving andyour cursor will changeto a preview of thatpiece of path. Nowclick the Map Area tolay a piece of paving

    and it will be placedimmediately.

    If any part of the path goes red, itindicates that the path cannot belaid at that point. Laying a segmentof paving next to an existing oneautomatically joins them together.Holding down the left-mousebutton allows you to lay pavingdown, as though you were“painting” on the Map Area —saving you trouble of having toclick each path piece downindividually! Remember to addlights along your paths so guestscan see where they’re going atnight.

    Guests are the single mostimportant things within yourresort and by Jove they can be ahard bunch to please. Guestslike to complain about anythingand everything unless it suitstheir personal requirements andexpectations. But not everyguest desires the same thing —during the day some may like tolounge around sipping piñacoladas or chilling out in cafés.Others demand more thrillingentertainment like jet skis andbeach discos, or just want to getaway. By evening, quiet guests come

    out of their shells and begin todemand other types of entertainment

    such as romantic meals at restaurantsand clubs where they can style on the

    dance floor.

    SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE: Asfickle as they are, guests areyour only source of income.But they aren’t all rich; mostguests only have a limitedamount of hard-earned cash tospend and they choose carefullywhat to spend it on. Offer lots ofvarying attractions to your guests andthey’ll respond by spending oodles of cash,praising your resort and encouragingmore people to vacation there — while atthe same time making you a packet.Everyone’s happy!

    DRASTIC ACTION: Pleasing guests is not awalk in the park though. Whenever theguests’ opinion counters reach very lowvalues, the guest is left with little choiceother than to leave the resort. Soonother guests will follow — jumpingon the next boat or bus out of there.

    No guests, no money. No money,you can kiss your chances of

    success goodbye.

    Listening to YourGuestsResponding to feedback from theguests is vitally important inensuring a smooth running,profitable resort. Feedback fromguests comes in a number ofguises: the Thumb System and theSmileys offer a simple visualrepresentation of the guests’mood. The Guest Information panelgoes into more depth, allowing youto identify exactly what’s troublingthem.

    the thumb systemThumbs up! Or down as the case maybe. When guests see or usesomething they like, be it eating atasty burger, admiring the cleanlinessof your rest rooms or applaudingthe celebrities on display, then a

    “thumbs up” will appear abovetheir heads. If they

    disapprove ofsomething, say a newly

    arranged mess on thefloor, they’ll give it a

    “thumbs down” and walkoff in a snit. Not a good

    thing as they’ll probablyend up telling their friends.

    The Guest InformationPanel

    Clicking a guestopens up theGuestInformationpanel. Thispanel givesdetails ofthe

    guest’s desires,opinions and thoughts. Paying

    close attention to the guest’sopinions is vitally important whendeciding what areas to address andimprove and, ultimately, whetheryour resort becomes a huge successor a total failure.

    Remember though, like most peopleon this planet, guests in SPRING BREAKare as unpredictable as the weather–— they all have their own opinionsand desires and can react differently inthe same situation.

    guest informationThe Guest Information tab offers a viewto the current state ofthe Guest:

    ACTIVITY NOW:What the guest iscurrently doing. Ifthe guest iswanderingaround doingnothing, you need to askyourself why.

    TOP DESIRES: What the guest is currentlymost looking for.

    ARRIVED ON: What day the guestarrived.

    DEPARTING ON: What day the guest isdeparting.

    CASH: Amount of cash the guest hasleft to spend on the island. If the guesthas a fair stack of money left, thendon’t just sit there — offer things tospend it on!

    SUNBURN: How much a guest issunburnt. Sunburnt guests aren’thappy guests, so make sure thatthere’s somewhere to get suntanlotion.

    DRUNK: A percentage of howdrunk the guest is. Once guestsget to 100%, they’re liable torelieve themselves at thenearest location, throw up andthen fall asleep in a dark corner.Not very pleasant for the otherguests!

    BLADDER: The higher thebladder rating, the more yourguests are bursting to go to thetoilet. If their bladder rating getstoo high and there are no toiletsavailable, they’ll just let loose there

    and then.

    HEADACHE: When guests becomedehydrated, they’ll start complaining of

    headaches. It’s nothing serious, just ahangover, but they’ll moan without

    headache pills.

    guest opinionsThe Guest Opinions tablists the seven mainopinions that affect yourguests’ everydayenjoyment of your resort.Any opinions that are in thered are spoiling their holidayand you’ll need to know why.These opinions are:

    BEAUTY: Plants, trees, lights, statues andshrubs all add to create a beautifulenvironment for your guests to enjoy. Themore beautiful scenery items you have,the happier your guests will be.

    QUEUING: No one likes to line up, yetpeople always seem intent on doing so.Only for so long, though. Eventuallyguests become fed up and mosey offto find something else to do.

    TOTTY: Guests love beautifulpeople and everyone has hopes ofa little holiday romance. Thebetter the totty in your resort, thehappier your guests will be.

    PRICE: What the guest feelsabout the prices within theresort. Guests are always happierwith cheap goods, but ifsomething’s popular it may beworth sneakily upping the priceand making a little more profit.

    VARIETY: Details what the guestfeels about variety on the island.No one likes doing the samething over and over again.

    CLEANLINESS: If the guest findsthe resort dirty, they’ll certainly letyou know about it.

    SAFETY: Guests won’t have a goodtime unless they feel safe within theresort. From bad water to sharkattacks, there are all manner of thingsthat can upset a guest.

    BEST: What the guest likes most aboutyour resort…

    WORSE: …and then what they don’t.Take note of this, if it doesn’t improvethe guest will probably end up packingtheir bags and jumping on the nearesttransport (or off the nearest bridge).

    Click the GUEST ANDBUILDING BROWSER buttonon the Interface to open upthe Guest and BuildingBrowser. This browser allowsyou to scroll through acomplete list of all yourguests and buildingscurrently within the resortwith overall at-a-glancestatistics. As we are onlydealing with guests inthis section, please see“The Guest and Building Browser(building side)” on page 17 for buildinginformation.

    To view the options forguests, click the DOWNARROW button at the topof the panel. The list can beordered by a variety ofdifferent criteria. Clickingone of these filters willreorder the list so that entriestoward the top have the greatestvalue. Displayed to the left of thefilter menu is the amount of guestscurrently in your resort.

    When you click one of the filteroptions, all guests within yourresort will display a bar belowtheir feet with the sameinformation. The guest filteroptions available to you are:

    HAPPINESS %: How happy orunhappy your guests are with yourresort.

    SUNBURN %: How sunburnt theguest is. As they roast under thesun, guests will start to demandsuntan lotion. If a guest reaches

    100% sunburnt and there’s nosuntan lotion available, that guestwill be very, very unhappy.

    HEADACHE %: When guestsbecome dehydrated they’llstart complaining ofheadaches. It’s nothingserious; they’ve just had

    one tequila sunrise too manyand are now suffering from a

    hangover. The higher thepercentage, the more a

    guest will yearn forheadache pills from the

    General Store.

    DRUNK %: How drunk theguest is. Once they’re three

    sheets to the wind (over 90%drunk) guests are liable to start

    fighting, vandalizing, becomingamorous, using the nearestlocation for a bathroom orthrowing up there and then —none of which are particularlypleasant for the other guests.

    BLADDER %: The higher therating, the more your guests arebursting to go to the toilet. If theirbladder rating gets too high andthere are no toilets nearby, thenthey’ll just let loose there and then— to the dismay of surroundingguests.

    SICKNESS %: As guests indulge toomuch, their sickness rating increasesuntil they can’t hold on any moreand start blowing chunks all overthe place. Not pleasant for eitheryour staff or the other guests.

    PRICE: What the guest feels aboutthe prices at the resort. Guests arealways happier with cheap goods,but if something’s popular it maybe worth sneakily upping the priceand making a little more profit.

  • Your staff are veryimportant to success

    in SPRING BREAK. Theymaintain your resort as well as lookafter your guests. Without staff yourresort will fall into disrepair, causingyour guests to become upset and leavethe island. Guests are willing to pay a lotof money to go on the vacation of theirdreams, so they don’t expect to end upsleeping in a shantytown listening togolden hits from the 30s.

    Staff MoodYou can control several variables, such assalary and working hours for each staffmember. Before we go into detailabout this, remember that there is alimit to how much you can expectyour staff members to work — they’reonly human after all. Even if you offerthem ridiculous amounts of moneyto work harder and faster, therewill be a time when they need restand their mood will start dropping.As with the guests, this is indicatedby a Smiley and a moodpercentage.     then toggle the EMPTY BINS and CLEANTOILETS options to OFF (so there’s no tickin the box).

    relocating staffIf there’s a particular area of yourresort that requiresattention, you canorder a staffmember to dropwhat he or she isdoing and go directlythere. Click the staffmember and then clickthe RELOCATE button onthe left side of the Staff Information panel.Your cursor will change to a relocation-arrow. Scroll around the Map Area andthen click the location where you wantthe staff member to go. The person willstop working and head off in thatdirection.

    calling cleaners and mechanicsIf a building is in a dangerousstate of disrepair, a sceneryitem has been vandalized orsomething needs urgent

    cleaning, then you can call a cleaneror mechanic to attend to theproblem immediately. Click eitherCALL MECHANIC or CALL CLEANER(as appropriate) from the BuildingInformation panel for that item.The first staff member tocomplete his or her current taskwill head straight on over.

    The StaffControl panelallows you toquickly andeasilymanage allyour staff inone go. You

    can view all the staffcurrently in the resort or

    those of a specifictype, by clicking theDOWN ARROWbutton next to theStaff Type box andthen selecting theappropriate typesyou want to displayfrom the drop down menu. The StaffControl panel also allows you to set theworking hours and salary for any staffmember, as well as hire new staff and firethose you no longer need.

    hiring (and firing) staffWhen constructed, all staff buildings comeready stocked with one staff member.Some buildings, such as the CleanersShack, allow you to hire a few additionalstaff of that type up to a maximum perbuilding. Hiring new staff to cope withthe increased passage of guests isimportant as your resort expands.

    staff salariesEvery staff member in SPRING BREAKneeds to be paid a salary in orderto do his or her job. Adjusting thestaff’s salary level can increase ordecrease their motivation to work;for example, increasing a cleaner’ssalary may encourage that workerto work faster and harder whiledecreasing the salary will probablyupset them.

    Under the Salary column on theStaff Control panel you’ll see thesalary listed for every staff memberof the selected type. Use the scrollbar to the right of the Staff Controlpanel to scroll through all your staff.Click the following buttons to changethese amounts:

    INCREASE:Increases salaryamount.

    DECREASE:Decreases salaryamount.

    ALL WAGES: Appliesthe change globally soall staff member of thesame type havethe same salary.

    Adjusting staffmembers’ salaryfrom the StaffInformationpanel worksexactly the sameway. Click the staff memberand then click the Salary tab. You’llsee the same controls as detailedabove.

    staff working hoursYour staff operate in ten-hour shiftsand are defaulted to work duringnormal daytime hours when firstemployed. You cannot change thelength of the shift, though you canask them to work longer hours bychanging their shift time when theyare still working. Word of warningthough: no one likes to work toolong. Pushing staff members tocontinually do one shift afteranother is likely to rub them thewrong way — eventually they’llprobably stop working altogether.It’s also important that you alter theworking hours so that some of yourstaff work during the evening —guests like to party in the eveningas well as during the day!

    Under the Hours column on theStaff Control bar you’ll see theshifts each staff member of theselected type is currently assignedto work. You can use the scroll barto the right of the Staff Control

    panel to scroll through all yourstaff. Working hours automaticallyadjust in ten-hour shifts as youincrease and decrease the startand finish times.Click thefollowing buttonsto alter theworking hours:

    INCREASE: Setsthe shifts to finishlater.

    DECREASE: Sets theworking shifts to startearlier.

    ALL SHIFTS: Apply thechange globally so allstaff members of the sametype work the same shifts.

    mechanicNothing lastsforever andwithout amechanic yourpossessionscertainly won’t last very long. All buildingsand attractions need constant maintenanceif they are to continue in service withoutfalling into disrepair and being closedto your guests.

    Mechanics will make regular visitsto your buildings. The default isevery eight hours, though youshould increase or decrease

    this depending how populara building is — the more use a

    building gets, the greater thelikelihood it has of developingproblems. A mechanic will breakfrom his daily routine to fix anybuildings that require urgentattention. Can he fix it? Yes hecan.

    You can set the number of visitsa mechanic makes to a buildingfrom the Maintenance tab withina building’s Building Informationpanel. You can also order amechanic to urgently attend arepair by clicking the building orpiece of vandalized scenery andclicking the CALL MECHANICbutton at the bottom of the

    Building Information panel.

    lifeguardEvery beach needs a lifeguard.

    Lifeguards make guests feel safeand good by being on hand to

    help any troubledswimmer, warn of

    shark attacks andgenerally look goodwalking down thebeach. The morelifeguards you have,the quicker they canrespond to those guests get themselvesinto trouble. If you find the waters areunsafe, you can have a lifeguard close thatstretch of beach. Remember though,guests do not like being without wateractivities, so don’t keep them closed toolong. You can close a beach from thelifeguard’s Setting’ tab and also from theSea Safety Level Settings panel on each

    Lifeguard Tower.

    probably just drop it on the groundinstead. Ironically they hate seeinglitter on the floor — there’s nopleasing some people. Hire as manycleaners as you can afford and leavethem to perform their duties, clearingup litter, scrubbing dirty toilets andremoving “ralph” from the side of theswimming pool.

    If you find that you need to focus yourcleaners on emptying bins, go to theSettings tab within the Cleaner’s StaffInformation panel and toggle theappropriate order ON or OFF. Ordersthat are ticked are ON.

    You can also order a cleaner to urgentlycleanse something by clicking the CALLCLEANER button at the bottom ofthe Building Informationpanel for that object(such as emptyinga bin or cleaningthe toilets).

    security guardA few unsavoryguests will always tryand spoil the party by brawling andvandalizing. Hire a few securityguards to keep them in order andmake the other guests feel safer. Ifyou find that guests are still beingrowdy, then you can decrease thetolerance level of the securityguards and increase the amountof fines they hand out. Be carefulthough, if your tactics are tooheavy-handed, you may end updriving the other guests from yourresort.

    You can alter a Security Guard’stolerance level from the Settings tabin the Security Guard’s StaffInformation panel. You cannot alterthe minor and serious fine amounts.

    holiday repHoliday reps routinely chat with

    guests to find out how they’refeeling and if they’rehaving a great time

    or not. As your repswander around,

    they’ll let you knowwhat the guests like

    and dislike aboutyour resort, and may

    offer some pointers asto how to deal with them.

    You can adjust the amount of timeyour reps spend with your guestsfrom the Settings tab in the Rep’sStaff Information panel. The longera rep chats with your guests, thebetter the guests will feel and thegreater the improvement in theiroverall mood. The downside is you’llneed to employ more reps as theywon’t be able to chat with as manyguests in a day.

    builderBuilders will standaround drinkingcoffee and shootingthe bull unless youissue new buildorders. Once you place a new buildingto construct or request one bedemolished, your builders leap intoaction and head toward the newconstruction/demo site (unless ofcourse it’s outside their workinghours). Builders construct or demolishbuildings in the order they are placed,spreading themselves out equallyamong the work. Obviously the fewerworkers you have constructing abuilding, the longer it will take tocomplete, so it’s better to issue a fewbuild orders at a time than many at once.

    If a building requires urgent construction,use the Relocate option (explained earlierin this section) to send your builders towork on that specific building. A maximumof six builders can work on a building atany one time.

    It’s about time we got down tobusiness, and we mean seriousbusiness. Make no mistake, youmay have created a smallgolden oasis, but withoutmoney it won’t stay that wayfor long. Salaries need paying,new attractions need adding,maintenance needs doing andprices need to be kept low.

    The surrounding landscape,however lush, will mean nothingwithout the very best inaccommodation andentertainment. You need to do your

    utmost to create the ultimate resort.Your guests will tend to patronize the

    coolest places; if you let your resortslide, or don’t keep current with your

    guests’ preferences, then you’ll see yourtrade start to dwindle.

    The financial aspects of the game are reallystraightforward and simple to grasp;SPRING BREAK is about fun in the sun afterall. If your bank balance is negative or lessthan the cost of the building you wish topurchase, then no new construction workcan be carried out until you have sufficientfunds in your account.

    daytime & evening businessThe day and night cycles play a big role inwhat the guests desire. During the day,most guests like to lie around on beachestrying to get that perfect bronze tan. Atnight they need other forms ofentertainment, for no matter how hardthey try they won’t get a tan in the dark.All buildings have certain opening andclosing times — though some can run

    for 24 hours. Guests are more likelyto spend larger wads of cash when

    you have an even balancebetween daytime andnighttime attractions.

    ADJUSTINGPRICESAll buildings in SPRING BREAKhave either a chargefor theattraction or aprice for thegoods they sell.Increasing theamount you chargefor an item to makeyourself more profitis great in principle, but guests likea good deal and are liable tobecome upset if they feel they’rebeing ripped off. Sometimes you mayeven need to lower your prices toencourage your guests.

    Holidays are all about sizzlinghot sunshine — but it’s not allfun in the sun. This idyllic statemay get interrupted withoccasional bouts of adverseweather affecting what yourguests want to do. And it’s notjust the weather — a number ofthings can go wrong in andaround your resort, rangingfrom a heat wave to sharkattacks. Although you can’tcontrol nature, protecting yourguests from these potential killersis a priority. A deceased guest is notonly a minor inconvenience, it’s bad

    for business.

    SUNSHINE: A lovely sunny day andeveryone will indulge themselves in

    whatever they enjoy doing the most.

    CLOUDY/OVERCAST: People sunbathingwill tend to get up and engage in otheractivities, as the perfect blaze of sunshineover the resort is under a light cloud cover.

    LIGHT RAIN: Like the cloudy weather,guests will get up and do something else.Guests in general will not engage innew outdoor pursuits, seeking the driercomforts of restaurants and cafes ormaybe going for a stroll, with someguests continuing what they do quitehappily.

    HEAVY RAIN: Even hardcoreguests retreat to their rooms orsimilar cover for the duration ofthe rainfall. Guests engaged inactivities such as jet-skiing willcontinue to brave theweather until the end oftheir turn before seekingcover.

    THUNDERSTORM:Guests still outdoorswill be risking their lives.Lightning strikes will occur,potentially damaging propertyand injuring any lingering guestswho are still intent on enjoyingthe great outdoors no matterwhat the weather.

    SHARK ATTACKS: Sharks arebad for business. Make sure yourlifeguards close any beaches whenthreatened by a shark attack.Remember though, guests getupset if the beaches are closed fortoo long.

    FOOD POISONING: Iffy watersupply? Make sure you keep youresort clean and well maintained oryour guests will go a nice shade ofgreen, vomiting their guts up.

    BEER SHORTAGE: Guests love beer, somuch so that you may encounter beershortages of certain brands if oversold —so try and offer a varied amount. Offeringan off-brand beer is better than havingno beer at all.

    player called theGipAmp that allows you to define yourown playlists, incorporatingeither the fantasticsoundtrack alreadypresent in SPRING BREAKor your own musictracks. Following is a listof the main controls onthe Interface:

    PLAY: Play current track

    STOP: Stop playingcurrent track.

    PAUSE: Pause track.

    PREV/NEXT: Skip to theprevious or next track.

    OPEN: Open up theGipAmp Browser.

    GipAmp BrowserOn the left side of the GipAmp is avolume control. Click each of thevolume buttons to increase/decrease the music volume. Thetitle of the track is displayed in themain browser of GipAmp; the onecurrently being played ishighlighted in bold. On the rightside is a scroll bar. Click and holdthe bar to move the list up anddown. At the bottom of theGipAmp panel are eight controlbuttons:

    DAY: Set selected track to playduring the daytime.

    NIGHT: Set selected track to playingduring the evening.

    SHUFFLE: Randomly shuffle thetracks into a different order.

    DELETE: Remove the track from yourcurrent playlist. Please note this doesnot delete the track from your hard-drive, just GipAmp’s playlist.

    REFRESH: Refresh playlist (handy ifyou’ve accidentally deleted a trackfrom the playlist or one you’verecently added hasn’t appeared).

    DEFAULT: Click to reset the playlistback to fantastic original soundtrackand clear out any rubbish you mayhave added…

    BROWSE: Plays all Mp3s in orderwithout the day and eveningoption.

    PLAYLIST: Plays all Mp3s with theday and evening option enabled.

    NOTE: Holding down the CTRL keywhile clicking tracks performs thesame function as in MicrosoftWindows, allowing you to group

    select multiple tracks and setparameters for them all at once.

    Adding Your Own Mp3s You can add your own Mp3s to SPRINGBREAK by placing the Mp3 you wish toplay in the Music folder located at theroot directory of SPRING BREAK gamefolder. For example, if you installedthe game to the default directory, youwould place your Mp3s in theC:\Program Files\EidosInteractive\Spring Break\Music\folder. Please consult your MicrosoftWindows manual for moreinformation about copying files into adirectory.

    You can also direct GipAmp to displayMp3s in any folder you may havethem stored in by creating a shortcutand placing it in the SpringBreak/Music directory. For example, ifyou have an Mp3 collection stored in afolder called My Music, then create ashortcut to that folder and drag anddrop the shortcut into \SpringBreak\Music (in the same way you wouldadd an Mp3). GipAmp will then displayany Mp3s present in that folder as well asin the default Spring Break\Musicdirectory.

    NOTE: Click REFRESH after creating ashortcut. GipAmp will not display any Mp3sin subdirectories of the folder you havecreated a shortcut to.

    Once placed in this directory, the Mp3s willappear within the ingame Mp3 browserwhere you can manipulate them as withthe standard game music. The Mp3s willonly appear if they are authentic Mp3 filesand are placed in the directory mentionedabove.

    unlimited snapshots of your favoritemoments while playing SPRING BREAK.Photographs are saved as .jpg files intothe photography folder within the SPRINGBREAK directory. As with all .jpg files, youcan then print your photographs, emailthem to a friend, in fact whatever youlike! You will need software capable ofdisplaying .jpg files for any of the ideasmentioned (consult the Windowsdocumentation for details on displaying,printing and emailing .jpg files).

    Depending on your screen resolution,you can take only a limited number ofphotos at one time. These photos aresaved as only files in the folder calledPhotos, in the SPRING BREAKdirectory. For example, if you’veinstalled SPRING BREAK to the defaultdirectory offered upon installation,your photographs can be found inC:\Program Files\EidosInteractive\Spring Break\Photos\.

    CAMERA: To open or close thecamera, click the CAMERA buttonon the Interface. You can scroll thecamera around in same way younormally control the view inSPRING BREAK.

    ZOOM: Click this button to zoomthe camera in and out. The T halfzooms in. The W half zooms out.

    SHOOT: Click this to take apicture. Any photos you takeappear at the bottom of theCamera screen in the roll of film.

  • FIRST AID: Nomatter how safeyour resort,accidents are still

    bound to happen fromtime to time. Whenever theydo, your unfortunate guests willwant swift and expert attention;and that’s just what they’ll getin this well-equipped first-aidpost, complete with expertlytrained nurse.

    TOILET:Hardly themost

    glamorousbuilding in your

    resort, but one ofthe most vital all

    the same. Providingadequate toilet facilities is an essential partof keeping the guests happy. If they havenowhere to go when nature calls, thenthey’ll be forced to pee on the spot, not apretty sight for any other guest.

    REPS CHALET: Holidayreps are vital to thesmooth running of yourhotel. They’ll entertain,help and advise yourguests about allmanner of things.Without a reps chalet

    you can’t hire any holiday reps.Each chalet can hold a maximum of fivereps, who tend to stay in the vicinity oftheir chalet, so place them carefully!

    CLEANERS SHACK: Cleaners are youronly defense against litter andnasty things in yourresort. Every cleanersshack you build comes

    complete with onenew cleanerequipped with amontage of

    cleaning equipment. Throughhiring, you can house a maximumof five cleaners per shack.

    SECURITY OFFICE:Give a guest alittle too much todrink and he orshe will startgetting rowdy.Most guests willjust end up

    falling asleep at thispoint, but some will be intent oncausing mayhem, so a low-keysecurity presence is always a goodidea. Each security office comes withone security guard, ready to patrolyour resort, respond to any problemsand generally look menacing.

    MAINTENANCE HUT: Excessive usage,wear-and-tear, vandals –they all mean onething to yourbuildings;breakdowns. To keepyour attractions in tip-top condition you’llneed to hire skilledmechanics. Eachmaintenance hut can hold a maximum offive mechanics. Every maintenance hutyou build is supplied with one ever-readymechanic.

    GENERAL STORE: The generalstore sells a wealth ofessential items foryour guests, though

    two of the productsare particularlyimportant: suncream and headachepills. Guests willconsume huge amounts of bothdepending on theircurrent desire; the more

    they drink the more

    HOTEL:The centerpiece ofany new resort, themain hotel complexhouses a receptionand administrationarea in addition to a number of stylishapartments. Hotels cannot be built; theycome ready-packaged as part of theresort. A hotel is open for 24 hours andcan accommodate a maximum of 100guests. A hotel is always present on a

    map and cannot bebuilt or demolished.

    BUILDERS YARD: Allof SPRING BREAK’sislands comeequipped with abuilders yard;

    without one, youwouldn’t be able to construct anynew buildings. Although it’s thebeating heart of the resort, abuilders yard is a noisy, dirty andunsightly place that stores all thematerial and equipment requiredfor any work needed on yourresort. A builders yard comescomplete with six eager workers.A builders yard is always presenton a map and cannot be built ordemolished.

    COMPLAINTS: People complainand they comehere. In droves theyhuddle around thekiosk, voicing theirutter disdain of yourresort. There is acomplaints hut presenton every map and cannotbe built or demolished.

    Hotel and Related POWER PLANT: Though a littleunsightly, these generators are state-of-the-art machinesthat provide anenormous amountof power for theirsmall size — a wolfin sheep’s clothing.As your resortgrows, you may needto build additionalgenerators to keep up with the increasingdemand for power. Each power plantgenerates 7500 units of power.

    WATER CLEANING PLANT: It’s agood idea to builda water cleaningplant if you canafford it. They’renot essential, butthey do workwonders on thelocal water supply,which is often of dubious quality andcan play havoc with your guests’bowels. If the resort suffers a foodpoisoning attack, and a watercleaning plant has been built, thenthe recovery rate of the resort is alsospeeded up.

    EXTRA ACCOMMODATION BLOCK:Not your average beachfront chalet —extend thecapacity ofyour resort ineasy stages withthese extraaccommodationblocks, offeringthe same luxurious apartmentsas your main hotel.

    LIFEGUARDTOWER: Thelifeguard tower issupplied stock withone lifeguard readyto save lives andlook good walkingdown the beach.The lifeguard tower is an essentialbuilding wherever there is a body ofwater. Each tower has an controlradius within which the lifeguard ismost effective. The lifeguard cantravel further, but this willunnecessarily endanger your guests,so build lots of these!

    Eating and DrinkingPOOL BAR:Similar to thebeach bar, buta little morestylish anddesigned tostand bythe pool.

    It allows gueststo spend money without having toventure too far from the pool area.

    THEME BAR 1:Tacky. Very tacky.An English-themedpub, they serveproper pints forthose guests who geta little homesick for the homeland.

    THEME BAR 2:Neonlighting,plastic seats —it doesn’tcome muchsleazier thanthis. And yourguests love it.

    BEACH BAR: Whatcould be better? Sellsvarious types of beerfor your thirstyguests.

    BEACH BBQ: A realflame-grilled treat— sells genuine fatburgers all daylong. None of thegreasy rubbish youget in the cafés,this is the real deal.

    CAFÉ 1:Specializes infrench friesand snacks forguestswanting tochow down on fast food. Popularchoice when it begins to rain, a café

    is only open during the day.
