Brampton is a city of neighbourhoods that appeals to a wide range of tastes and lifestyles, from luxury estates, to family-friendly communities, to urban condos and apartments in our vibrant downtown. Here are just a few of the areas worth exploring:

MOUNT PLEASANT VILLAGE. Mobility is key in this transit-focused urban community built around a new Mount Pleasant GO commuter train station, an inter-city rail line, transit, and great recreational paths and space to walk, bike and play. At its heart is Mount Pleasant Village Square, served by a library and community centre in a restored historic CPR train station. DON’T MISS: Look for unique goods sold by artisans at the Village Market every Thursday evening from June 22 to October 5.

BRAMALEA. Canada’s first model suburb, founded in the 1960s, has grown up into a diverse collection of family-oriented communities. Attractions include the exciting retail shops of Bramalea City Centre, year-round activities at Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park and a GO station for easy access from around the region. DON’T MISS: Mount Ching! You can ski, snowboard or go tubing, right in the city in Brampton’s destination park.

CASTLEMORE. This suburban area in the northeast corner of the city has several new residential developments, and is known for its large and luxurious estate homes built on the shores and ravines along the Humber River.

CHURCHVILLE. This rural hamlet in the southwest corner of the city, deep in the Credit River Valley, has been designated a heritage community. First settled 200 years ago, a number of original timber-frame buildings survive to this day. The community is steeped in history – some families have been here for generations.

DOWNTOWN BRAMPTON. Brampton’s urban core is a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly destination for shopping, dining and enjoying vibrant cultural attractions any time of the year. Graced by tranquil parks, historic homes and tree-lined streets, it is also home to a growing number of residents drawn by all the great local amenities. DON’T MISS: Garden Square, The Rose Theatre, PAMA and more!

JASON ROSSOThree decades before opening his new Downtown Brampton eatery J. Red & Co Food + Drink (341 Main St. N.), Chef Jason Rosso worked his first kitchen jobs in the same neighbourhood.

In the following years, Chef Rosso – who you may know as co-host of Food Network’s “Restaurant Makeover” or from “Recipe to Riches” – has honed a distinctive style to win accolades in several top Canadian dining establishments.

Chef Rosso is happy to call Brampton home (again!), this time to offer a dining experience that hails the best of Canada and its influential ethnically diverse cuisine.

RANVEER BRAR One of India’s best-known celebrity chefs, Ranveer Brar has brought his enthusiasm and culinary expertise to Canada to develop the menu and concept for Mayura Inspired Indian Cuisine in Brampton (200 County Court Blvd.).

The new fine dining establishment focuses on both traditional Indian and fusion fare, aiming to present a fresh twist to the familiar South Asian palate.

Fans of lifestyle television may recognize Chef Brar from India's food channel shows and appearances as a judge on “MasterChef India.” Brar has had restaurants in Boston and India, but Mayura is the first in Canada.

TOP 5S FROM FIND OUT WHAT’S NEW AND BUZZING IN BRAMPTON’S FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE ON INBRAMPTON.COM. WE ASKED THE TEAM’S WRITERS TO SHARE THEIR SUGGESTIONS FOR TOP 5 PLACES TO EAT.

TOP 5 UNIQUE CUISINESBrampton is known for global cuisines thanks to a vast and varied food scene that reflects a vibrant, multicultural population. From western comfort food to savoury Indian treats, the city has it covered. Here’s a Top 5 compiled by the savvy tasters at inbrampton.com:

1. LA CATRINAAuthentic Mexican food in downtown Brampton: This family-owned restaurant uses recipes from “La Abuela” – the grandmother – and ingredients that capture the essence of Mexico. The menu offers a wide selection, from tacos to ceviche to house-made mole dishes. For dessert, try traditional churros or the Pastel De Tres Leches (vanilla sponge cake soaked in three milks, filled with peach); a favourite of the InBrampton team!35 Queen St. W.905.497.1766 lacatrinamexicanfood.com

2. POUTINE DARE TO BE FRESHThis downtown staple brings a taste of Quebec to the Flower City. Offerings include Mediterranean poutine (topped with feta curds, sun-dried tomatoes and kalmata olives), Krabby Patty & Shrimp poutine (crispy crab patty, breaded shrimp and caper mayo), and even a breakfast poutine (fried eggs and Canadian back bacon). Other options include classics like Montreal smoked meat and “steamie” hotdogs. 20 Main St. S.289.752.3615 poutinedaretobefresh.ca

3. QUEEN GYPSYAuthentic Serbian cuisine based on family recipes handed down through generations.

Highlights include a trademark Karadjordjeva schnitzel: a deep fried pork roll filled with Serbian-style cream cheese – a personal fave of this InBrampton writer! A great spot to hit for quality late night eats (open until midnight except on Monday and Sunday) and a lively atmosphere. As owner Vera says on her website: “We eat crazy beautiful food, we drink, we swear, and we laugh...simple.”10 Main St. S.905.497.2001 queengypsybrampton.ca

4. SUL IRMAOS SMOKEHOUSEThis downtown restaurant specializes in Portuguese southern fusion cuisine and is best known for its smoked meat (featured on the Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here”). Must-try dishes include the beef eater (slow smoked brisket, deep fried okra and shrimp, and collard greens) and the pulled pork and “beanasaurus” (southern slow smoked pulled pork, mama’s chili, fresh cut creamy coleslaw, and fried mac and cheese bites).73 George St. S.905.216.8939 sulirmaos.com

5. THE APPLE FACTORYWho doesn’t love good ol’ fashioned traditional apple pie made with the freshest ingredients sourced locally? If you’re in the mood for homemade and country-fresh, this is the place to go. Cure your fix for something sweet or savoury with the choice of over a dozen different kinds of pies. The shop also serves freshly baked tarts and bread (you might also find candy apples, just so you know!).10024 Mississauga Rd.905.846.3715 applefactory.com

TOP 5 FOR DATE NIGHTSTo choose the perfect place to bring a date, you have to keep a few things in mind: the food has to be on point and the atmosphere equally enticing. If you're planning a special night, here are five great local spots, according to inbrampton.com:

1. J. RED & CO FOOD + DRINKA delightful atmosphere and innovative menu make this one a gem. Chef Jason Rosso is the mastermind behind the menu (see page 23 to learn more), known for his unique twist on the familiar. What's more fun than tasting something new on a date?! Try the smoked cheddar mac and cheese or crispy, fried cauliflower “wings”. Even if you find you have nothing in common, you can still talk about this food!341 Main St. N.905.866.5733 jredandco.com

2. ARIA BISTRO AND LOUNGEThis elegant dining room is located in the historic Walter E. Calvert house. If impeccable service is key to your special occasion, expect to be waited on by no less than three people through your meal. Hospitality is warm and personal – you'll be greeted with a smile and offered a genuine thank you when you leave. A pleasing menu covers everything from seafood to steaks to lamb chops to an escargot app.485 Main St. N.905.451.2600 ariabrampton.com

3. THE KHANA SUTRAThis spacious restaurant boasts an expansive, delicious menu, playful decor and relaxing live music that augments a romantic meal. Service is friendly and attentive, and food is a cut above typical Indian fare. Sharable favourites include lime prawn pakoras and Bharwaan Tandoori mushroom caps. Make an impression by trying the Shehnai Ghosht entrée (lamb roasted with cardamom) along with moist garlic naan. 2452 Queen St. E.905.789.7999 thekhanasutra.com

4. BUCATINI RESTAURANT AND WINE BARThis modern Italian resto and wine bar (wine is always good on a date!) has been around for nearly five years. As you walk in, you’ll notice contemporary décor and the sign that reads “Bucatinis” in the middle of the room. Suitable for either a casual dinner or a fancy date night, you can opt to sit at a high top table or a more romantic booth. 170 Bovaird Dr. W., Unit 16905.459.6777 bucatinirestaurant.com

5. SUSHI HOUSEWho says sushi can't be romantic? This Japanese restaurant is both good- looking and inviting, featuring booths on one side and private dining rooms on the other. The seating offers ample privacy in a cozy setting. As far as the menu goes, the food is on point to satisfy – especially with the complimentary crunchy noodle soup that kicks off every meal!135 Main St. N.905.457.4882 sushihousebrampton.ca

TOP 5 BREAKFAST SPOTSWith lots of great breakfast spots, Brampton is known to have a few iconic greasy spoons, homegrown diners and quaint family restos. If you wake up hungry in the morning this is a good city to be in! Here are the five best, as selected by inbrampton.com reviewers:

1. FLIPSThis breakfast joint gets packed to the rafters on weekends. It serves up all the breakfast classics as well as generous combo platters that will satisfy your appetite (and may “cure” hangovers!). While it's easy enough to find greasy spoons that serve a solid breakfast game, it's rare to find one that’s so consistently tasty. No wonder it attracts everyone from families to couples to students who stayed up late the night before.575 Main St. N.905.452.8188

2. JOHN’S FAMILY RESTAURANTIf you want to hit this hotspot on a Saturday or Sunday, be prepared to wait a few minutes for a table. This tasty establishment is known for serving breakfast, brunch, and Greek and Italian fare. A beyond ordinary smoked salmon benny is heavy on both fish and flavour, topped with a memorable hollandaise. Other staples are perfectly prepared and wonderfully filling. Breakfast potatoes are exceptional, comprised of the real deal – no store-bought cubes here!1 Fisherman Dr.905.840.8888

3. STACY LEE’S FAMILY RESTAURANTDramatically understated on the outside and spartan inside, Stacy Lee’s thrives by serving hearty breakfast fare and shredded hash browns. Choose from straight up bacon and eggs, pancakes, waffles, French toast,

benedicts or a cool concoction comprised of a moist croissant, egg and cheese. You'll leave full and happy – just remember to specifically ask for those amazing shredded hash browns. You'll never want regular home fries again.4 McLaughlin Rd. S.905.459.4807

4. AJ’S FAMILY RESTAURANTTucked away in an industrial plaza, this low-key place is easy to miss but more than worth a look. The casual family resto features comforting, classic dishes – including a rich and creamy smoked salmon eggs benedict and a Hungry Man breakfast (three eggs, two strips of bacon, one piece of ham and two sausages). Portions are generous and service is friendly and attentive. All in all, a sweet breakfast spot.1 Regan Rd.905.840.6558

5. GIGGLING TOMATOESThis quick-service chain (three locations in the city) combines counter service and traditional table service, making it an ideal stop if you’re in a rush. The menu has a generous selection of traditional breakfast food, from omelettes to pancakes. The food is comforting, tasty and satisfying – as well as incredibly affordable.7920 Hurontario St.905.216.1659 gigglingtomatoes.com

PEEL ART GALLERY, MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES (PAMA)PAMA is your first stop in downtown Brampton to learn more about the art, culture and heritage of Peel Region. This year also marks the 150th Celebration of Peel County and PAMA’s courthouse and jail buildings commemorated by great exhibitions, programs and events.

Comprised of an art gallery, a museum and historic archives, PAMA offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the past and present, and historic insights based on personal lives and stories of the people of Peel Region.

Exhibits link the past, present and future within buildings of historical and architectural significance, including The Peel County Courthouse (1867), the Peel County Jail (1867), the Registry Office (1890), and the Peel County international-style building (1958). » MAP ID: 4 9 Wellington St. E. pama.peelregion.ca

JAILHOUSE TALES5 THINGS ABOUT A 150-YEAR-OLD LANDMARK: Built in 1867, and closed in 1977, the Peel County Jail building is today integrated into PAMA – Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives.

1 / LINK WITH THE PAST: Now that the jail is a museum, you can visit the Jail Gallery on the main floor. Go into one of three cells, close the metal door, and imagine what life was like for the prisoners and the people who worked here.

2 / CREATURE COMFORTS: PAMA characters Coco the Crow and Wellington the Raccoon were inspired by various animals that found shelter in the jail when unoccupied.

3 / SOUND DESIGN: The arched ceilings of the jail’s small cells were designed to create an echo and allow guards to hear prisoners from out in the hallway.

4 / CLOSE QUARTERS: While originally meant to hold 16 prisoners, one in each cell, the jail was often used to house the poor or destitute, so occupants were doubled up.

5 / GREAT ESCAPES: In the 110 years the jail operated, there were many escape attempts. A few were successful, but most ended in recapture.

CANADA’S FLOWER TOWNBrampton’s recent heritage is linked to our roots as the “Flower Town of Canada,” a history we remember and celebrate as “Flower City”. As “Flower Town,” Brampton was once one of the world’s top cut flower exporters, specializing in roses, orchids, carnations and more.

The industry emerged in 1863 after Edward Dale began selling vegetables from his estate garden. His son Harry grew the business into the third-largest greenhouse in the world, cultivating roses for over a century. Today in “Flower City” you’ll find more than 900 annual, perennial and mixed flower beds located around Brampton’s parks, boulevards, recreation facilities and city-owned buildings.
