Abundant Blessings

God has richly blessed our ministries at Salmon Creek this summer. I look forward with great anticipation for the ways God will use us this Fall of 2017. As the summer draws to a close, I continue to give thanks for the inaugural year of Project Transformation and all of the children and families who have been blessed by this program. I am in awe of the Youth Mission Trip to the Yakama Nation, our fantastic Vacation Bible School where Paul and the Underground Church came alive for us, the first ever Music Camp attended by 20 young people, our Dino Dig and movie attended by 42 plus people, (who knew that Dinosaur eggs smelled like coffee!) and the wonderful vegetables from God’s Garden. I am grateful to the Camps that have hosted our children and youth and adults who have gone as counselors. Mission U was an enriching time for those who attended. You covered me with prayer when I went to Fort Collins and the CRU17 Conference and spoke twice, teaching the Word to 5,000 plus people each time. It has been powerful to preach through the Epistle to the Romans this summer. The Word is alive! God is growing the Kingdom and we get to be partners – life could not be better!

An exciting new opportunity for ministry evolved from the Vision 20/20 activity that began with the 2016 Charge Conference last winter. Family Promise is a ministry to homeless families that our church, together with other local churches, has covenanted to participate in. Planning is underway. Family Promise is a national organization with 202 Family Promise affiliates in 42 states across the United States. In Washington there are 2 active and 4 developing affiliates. In Oregon there are 3 active and 2 developing affiliates. Family Promise is a 501(c)3 non-denominational, faith-based program to help homeless children and their families achieve a stable place to live. Pastor Joyce Emery, Steve and Gay Enyeart, and Bob and Martha Hager have all been associated with churches affiliated with Family Promise. The mission of Family Promise is to mobilize communities to help low-income families achieve and sustain their independence. The goal is to stabilize families by helping them repair credit, develop savings, find employment, and find a permanent affordable place to live; while providing a temporary safe place to live. The cornerstone of Family Promise is the development of Family Promise Affiliates that provide homeless families with shelter, meals, and comprehensive, compassionate support. Around the country, Affiliates are (1) helping homeless families achieve independence, (2) providing congregations with local mission activities, (3) creating initiatives that meet community needs, (4) giving people of all ages meaningful volunteer opportunities, and (5) building public awareness of homelessness and the needs of low-income people. The Clark County Affiliate, Family Promise of Clark County, was established December, 2016. The Board of Trustees, Ad Board, and Council on Ministries have all approved and signed a one year covenant for Salmon Creek United Methodist Church to become a Host Church. A committee has been formed to begin preparations for start-up in 2018. Over the next few months we will provide information through the Circuit Rider and presentations to build your understanding of how you and your families can be involved. The Family Promise Team at Salmon Creek envisions 100% of the members of Salmon Creek being able to participate! The homebound can be part of the prayer team. Anyone can donate time, food or fellowship to our guests providing a warm and safe place for families with children. Look for more information about this exciting new opportunity to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus Christ in ministry to a vulnerable population in need in our local community. There will be more communications in the Circuit Rider and in worship services about ways that you can help in this ministry as it evolves. Christ calls upon us to serve the most needy among us. Family Promise provides us with just that opportunity. Stay tuned for more information over coming weeks about Family Promise and how you can help this ministry to succeed in our church. For more information about Family Promise, please visit their website at http://familypromise.org/.

Guess What Officers did August 1, 2017: They weren't asleep at the wheel. Our Treasurer Clare Kennedy prepared and served a luncheon at the Kennedy home to Patti Petersen, Phyllis Browning, Jane Alt, and Lucille Harwood. Absent were Elaine Gilbert, Linda Garrison, Betty Selby, and Jan Hayden who were excused but furnished comments that were read in the business meeting. Each woman present also told what she thought of our meetings and accomplishments this past year. They agreed we had a good year; however they realize new ideas might interest more of our SCUMC women. Save Tuesday, September 19 and join us at 1:00 p.m. in the St. Paul Room for our first meeting this Fall. Program Update: In our August Circuit Rider Co-Vice-President Phyllis Browning told us topics from Mission U would be the program. It's exciting to know that the UMW video about missionary conferences will be shown. It's up-to-date, has nice photography, and is something viewers will enjoy and not want to miss. Looking Around: A church survives because members attend, donate, and involve themselves in various labors of love. Throughout the past month so many good things have happened. We in UMW are grateful for those of you who help with Sunday School, VBS, choir, maintaining the garden, folding and mailing the Circuit Rider, serve as greeters and ushers, read Scripture, do the coffee hour, and help with parking cars. The UMW officers are encouraged when they have a budget that lets them reach out to local missions and those abroad. To see UMW active in SCUMC inspires them. On the Lighter Side: Larry Kennedy told me (Lucille), "The All School Study in the Auditorium by The Bishop impressed me most about Mission U." Phyllis Browning told me "Once again Mission U was a positive experience. It is wonderful to be among other United Methodist Women in this setting where we gather for learning about mission and study to enhance Spiritual growth. I especially enjoyed Bishop Mary Ann Swenson's instruction about our mission conferences in the United States." Clare Kennedy's e-mail to me told about the All School Study. Her final paragraph reads, "As always, the educational level at Mission U is high enough that Pastors and others receive Continuing Education credits for attending. The food is good, the Central Washington climate warm and dry, and the company can't be beat. Folks should plan to attend next year--they'll wonder why they waited so long!" Please join me in this prayer by Dr. Robert Schuller: “Open my heart to Your words today. Make me more like you and may I honor you in every word and act." Amen.

Fall, a season of change, is

almost upon us. Many

things will be changing

including the level of

activity in the church.

Ministry teams, committees

and small groups that have

been on hiatus for the

summer will be meeting

again and working together

to fulfill the mission of the

church. The Body of Christ,

the church, will be more

active.

In 1 Corinthians 12, St Paul

likens the church to a

human body, with many

different parts all working

together to effectively

function and fulfill its

purpose. We all have a role

to play. Everyone who is

committed to following

Christ is gifted to serve in

the Body. An essential

element of our Roadmap to

Spiritual Growth is Serving

Christ.

Now is a great time in the

year to think about how you

are Serving Christ. How are

you serving in the Body of

Christ? If you haven’t

already found a place to

serve, there are many great

opportunities on all of the

ministry teams and

committees of the church.

I encourage you to pray for

the Lord to guide you

toward finding a place to

serve. Let us know how we

can help you get plugged

into the Body.

A Word from Your Lay Leader…

Greetings sisters-and brothers-in Christ,

Two faithful women, Sandie Hollister, and Sandy Bippes work hard to keep Legacy Hospital at Salmon Creek supplied with passage quilts for those who are

at the end of their lives. These beautiful quilts are made available to individuals so that there is color and beauty in the hospital room where they will most likely breath their last breath.

Women in our congregation and their friends, piece together the covers of the passage quilts. Sandie and Sandy tie the quilts to batting and a backing. Another angel sews on the binding. Each set of passage quilts is blessed by the Pastor and the women of JOY Bible and they are taken up to the Chaplain’s office to be distributed as most appropriate. We are grateful to be a part of this ministry of compassion.

Greetings: This mission study was held at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. The All School Study was in McConnell Hall with other classes in Black Hall. Mission U Dean Joan Hackett made announcements and welcomed attendees. They received a name

badge, a booklet with pictures of the staff and needed information. Singing, communion and anything that involved everyone took place in McConnell Hall. Other classes were Living as a Covenant Community, Climate Justice, and Youth. Comments: Our Pastor Joyce Emery and husband David took time from their busy schedules to attend some sessions. Pastor Joyce says, "I deeply appreciated learning about our historical ties to the Alaska mission and also the Red Bird Mission. I learned so much." She added, "The class on covenant reminded me of how much we need God and one another to be faithful in our time." Missionary Conferences follow from material I had and what our own Patti Petersen submitted. As stated by our Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, "Mission is part of the DNA of the Methodist Church" so our purpose for having Missionary Conferences is to provide support and resources for those who have none. Some local churches need help to sustain their congregation.

"A Missionary Conference is defined because of its particular mission opportunities, limited membership, and its regional or language considerations and material needs. Each of the three conferences covered at Mission U 2017 fill a need as they serve their population. In the Alaska Mission and Conference there are less than 30 churches covering a landmass of 586,000 square miles with over 102 languages spoken, many of which belong to the indigenous people. The most important lesson we learned here was "first do no harm."

The Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference has approximately 7,000 participants in 80 churches with 39 federally recognized tribes. In 2012 we began the healing process between the Native American people and the white man. Reconciliation means putting our words into positive actions. And finally the Red Bird Missionary Conference covers 20 churches in 7 counties where over 40% of the population live in poverty. Rugged terrain creates isolation and lack of resources. Shameful exploitation and mining have damaged the environment and ruined the water supply. These are proud people we work alongside of with a hand up rather than a hand out. We have many valuable ways of supporting any one of these conferences with our time, talent, and financial help. It is time to step up and do so. In closing Bishop Mary Ann Swenson said, "This is a powerful and significant time in my life." She wants to spend a minimum of 20 hours a week ministering in missions, such as caring for our land or feeding the hungry. Please join us next year for Mission U 2018, July 13-16, 2018, Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA.

Salmon Creek Church had another successful VBS this year, July 17-21, 2017. The theme was Paul’s time in Rome. We learned about Paul’s commitment to Jesus and to spreading the Gospel, how the early church met together and the struggles they faced, and the relationship we have with God through Jesus. The kids enjoyed worship in the morning and then had the opportunity to visit a Roman marketplace, go to apprenticeship games where they participated in different sports and jobs that people did in Rome, and they visited Paul’s house and the underground church. Following VBS, a Dino Dig and Outdoor Movie Night was held at the Church as an outreach to VBS families. The kids had a lot of fun!

We are so thankful for all of the volunteers that gave their time and resources to organize this year’s VBS, Dino Dig, Outdoor Movie Night, and Family Movie Night, “Cars”.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MEANINGFUL WAY TO LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH? CONSIDER STEPHEN MINISTRY.

Stephen Ministry…what exactly is it? Lots of folks aren’t all that sure. So, let’s de-mystify it. Quite simply, a Stephen Minister is…

A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting,

A caring Christian friend who takes time to really listen,

A lay person who has received 50 plus hours of training in how to provide Christian care, and,

A dedicated Christian commissioned by Salmon Creek Unit-ed Methodist Church to provide strictly confidential in-depth caring.

Illness, death, job loss, spiritual crises, other losses…all these things are a part of life, but sometimes an individual suffering through these or similar things would like to have someone in whom they can confide the doubts, fears, and anguish they may be suffering. That’s where Stephen Ministers come in. Stephen Ministers have the gifts of mercy, faith, encouragement, and knowing how to share insights of their own deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Stephen Ministry Course Training will begin in January of 2018. Applications are now available in the Church Office. The deadline for submitting your application is November 15. Talk to Greg Berry with any questions.

Financial Peace University is a nine week class that teaches money management. Dave Ramsey and his teaching team will walk you through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, planning for the future and much more. Thursday evenings at 7 pm beginning September 14. Please register online at: http://www.salmoncreekchurch.org/financial-peace-university.html.

Mission Trip to Omak will be Oct. 21 - 28th. We have a team of 7 already confirmed to go but would be interested in more. Mark the communication card in your bulletin on Sunday, or contact Kathy Hardy.

Interested in playing board games with children? A group of volunteers does just that each Wednesday from 11:15-12:30 at Salmon Creek Elementary School. The goal is to help participants learn to work well together and enjoy thinking. It is quite popular, so we need at least 3 volunteers each week. You do not need to be there every week for this very fun church outreach. Interested? Call Jacque Ploium 360-573-0702 or let Sue in the church office know of your interest. Our first Games Day is September 13 and you will need to complete a security form a week or so before.
