Club News. Recent Night Photography Outings. Bronwyn has organized some interesting low light/night photography shoots lately - we ended up with a really good turnout at the old cemetery last week! It was bitterly cold - about 6C, but we all had a great time anyway. Brett Allen was there and brought some amazing lights - and Glenn provided us with some rather good "back lighting" which made for some rather impressive shots. A couple of weeks before that outing saw us at Moon Reserve and we had a surprise visit from Mattie Page! It was great to catch up with him again. Julie and Mattie ran around the trees with little led lights - and they featured in one of Bronwyn's photos - she thought it looked like a UFO! ( or a flying saucer) Gary enjoyed a cup of hot soup courtesy of Judy at Moon reserve! Library Display During the month of June, we held our annual photography exhibition at the local library in Bacchus Marsh. Thanks to all the Members who contributed photos for the display, which was changed halfway through the month. We had 100 images on display, which was a great effort by Members - well done to all. As the display was in the middle of the library, it certainly provided a striking and colourful display on entering the library! Thanks to Christine for helping Bronwyn and I set it all up both times, that was so much appreciated. The display was dismantled last Friday and photos can be collected at the workshop. Library Display

During the month of June, we held our annual photography exhibition at the local library in Bacchus Marsh. Thanks to all the Members who contributed photos for the display, which was changed halfway through the month. We had 100 images on display, which was a great effort by Members - well done to all. As the display was in the middle of the library, it certainly provided a striking and

colourful display on entering the library! Thanks to Christine for helping Bronwyn and I set it all up both times, that was so much appreciated. The display was dismantled last Friday and photos can be collected at the workshop.

Our Judge for June was David Oastler of Oastler Images, Bacchus Marsh. Thank you, David for judging for us - we all enjoyed the evening and your critique of our images.

The week before the competition, Gary Green and I both attended David's photography workshop in his studio - an amazing whole day session which involved both theory and practical exercises in a relaxed, informal and informative way. If you get the chance to enrol in any of David's workshops, take the opportunity if you can.

Well - not quite a "Simpson's night" - but don't forget the next Workshop night! - Wednesday 13th July.

It's a "hands on" workshop this time - so you will need to bring your camera, a tripod - Plus : a box you can cut up, some masking tape, a box cutter if you have one, some transfer paper from the newsagents - OR - some baking paper! This workshop has been scheduled so that you will be

able to make your own "lightbox" ( to take home) - In August, there will be another workshop using your light box - and Macro is the set subject in September for EDI's. There will be some supplies available for those who need it at the workshop, but they will be limited. Should be a fun night - and we will have a few props there to use for taking a macro shot in the new lightboxes.

At every workshop night, there is help available for those who have any queries about their camera or post processing - an informal and relaxed time for you to ask for help.

In June, we all enjoyed Eric's excellent presentation on Histograms. Eric has put the whole presentation on the club's Face Book page so that it can be downloaded by Members. If you have any questions on Histograms - Eric is happy to help, so all you have to do is ask him.

Next Competition : Wednesday 27th July 2016.

Set Subjects: EDI_ Reflecting.

Definition: Reflecting: Your interpretation of reflecting, not just water/light reflection.

Set Subject for Prints: Night/Low Light.

Definition: Night / Low Light: Low Light: After sunset, when you can still see everything around you, but can tell that it is getting dark or when you are indoors.

EDI's for both prints and EDI's will be due in by email by the workshop night on Wednesday 13th July - you can bring them along on that night on a usb stick if you like.

It's July now - and that means Fireworks time at Docklands again! From July thru to August, every Friday night, Docklands have a free fireworks display. They usually kick off at 7.30pm, and they are extremely popular, so Bronwyn usually posts a time to meet up on the Face Book page - it's always a good night - can be a bit chilly, but a keen photographer just adds an extra layer of clothes - those

Hand Warmers you can get now at the supermarkets are pretty good too! Keep a watch on the club's Face book page for a date that the club can meet up at Docklands. ( last year, we extended the time in the city and did some amazing night shoots as well!)

Picture Correct have an ebook on Fireworks available until the 4th July (US time) for download at the price of $10. You can apparently "get a refund if the ebook is not suitable"!

Gary Green was in Tasmania recently to join a Luke O'Brien Photography Tour to Cradle Mountain and experienced a bit of bad weather!

Gary had a great time anyway, have a read of his report and see some of his images here!

Cradle Mountain 4 Day Photography Workshop

(Or Tassie and the 100 year flood)

With Luke O’Brien Photography What an amazing adventure, the plan was for four days and three nights in some of the most beautiful Tasmanian country side that you could hope to imagine. Luke didn’t disappoint us. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t quite what we expected. We left Hobart on Monday morning, seven of us in a mini bus. We had a mixed group of three women and three men, all budding photographers and our mentor Luke. One from Queensland, two from New South Wales, me from Victoria and a mother / daughter team from Hong Kong. We soon discovered that the planned route would have to change, as the roads that we planned to take, had been blocked or washed away by flood waters. Not to be deterred, our fearless leader and self-appointed navigator checked the internet and made lots of calls to find us a safe path to our final destination. We arrived a few hours late, but we all made it in one peace without a scratch. The Cradle Mountain Hotel was running on generators when we arrived by they soon had the power back on. The hotel was amazing and so were the staff. We stored our gear in our rooms and then it was off to Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake with our cameras. The landscape was different to all of the standard images that you normally see, due to the amount of water in the Lake. The plan was for a sunset shoot but the clouds didn’t want to let any colour through. However, we all took some amazing pictures of ominous clouds and mist partially covering the mountain. When we were finished we went back to the hotel for an amazing meal. During the course of the workshop, the plan was for thirteen photo shoots during the day and nights. The night shoots were to be substituted with Post Processing Tutorials in case of bad weather. The shoots included sunrise and sunset shoots each morning and evening, with waterfall and rainforest shoots during the day, followed by star/night shooting obviously at night. Surprisingly, we managed to accomplish all of the things that we set out to do, even one night the clouds parted for us so that we could shoot the stars. What an amazing trip. I would recommend this workshop to anybody. I had so much fun and learnt so much it was just awesome. I should get my computer back soon, so then I will start work on all the pictures that I took. (And I took lots so it might take me awhile.)

Ed: Gary now has a new computer, so expect some stunning images from him very soon!

If you watch The Living Room on Channel 10 you may have seen this - or can "catch up" - have a look at last Friday night's episode. It features Dr. Chris ( the spunky vet on the show) who accepted Luke O'Brien's' challenge to take the same photos that Luke has produced postcards of.

http://tenplay.com.au/channel-ten/the-living-room/episodes (Season 5, episode 21)

It reminded me of the trip that Jill and I did in February with Luke to the Bay Of Fires!

Thanks, Gary for your wonderful photos and report on your trip.

We welcome all reports of photography trips here at " Newsletter HQ" - so don't be shy - send them in!
