Inside CFA Columbus February 2017
CFA Columbus momentum carries into 2017.
The 2016 calendar year was eventful for all of us—the markets experienced unanticipated politi-
cal events both at home and abroad all the while commodities and currencies did not provide sta-
bility either. Despite the Columbus society’s strengths, market control is not yet one of them.
2016 still proved to be a great year for the Columbus CFA society. Our lineup of speakers includ-
ed Myron Scholes, David Rubenstein, and individuals from Bridgewater, Goldman Sachs, Putnam
Investments, and JANA partners. In addition, we held a highly competitive Golf outing in the fall at
one of Ohio State’s beautiful courses.
In addition to the events and speakers that we attracted, the society gave back by supporting
those in the process of passing all three exams by hosting an event that allowed test takers to
ask questions about preparing for each exam, learn about study material, and also meet other
test takers with whom they could form study groups. At the other end of the process, CFA Colum-
bus recognized the 30 individuals in our area who received their charter. (Page 5)
As we look ahead to the new year, you will see a number of activities within Columbus. Within the
current month, the Research Challenge (page 3) will invite a number of teams to the Sheraton to
present their work to judges and also hear from local charterholders and hiring managers to ex-
pand their knowledge about the financial industry.
Throughout the year, pay attention to three additional initiatives. A local branding campaign has
been started at all three concourses of the Columbus Airport (page 4) and will run through the
end of the year. In addition, the society is finding ways to be even more impactful at the college
level with a mentorship program between charterholders and college students in central Ohio as
well as providing charterholders as guest speakers to college classrooms. Volunteers will be ap-
preciated for both initiatives so keep an eye out for more information.
Finally, this year’s mock exam will be held on May 6th, approximately one month before the exam
date. More details will be sent via email.

Central Ohio Research Challenge Arrives
Inside CFA Columbus
Education
As you read this, four teams of university students are diligently preparing for the Research Challenge Local Finals. Columbus CFA Society members are in for a treat, as for the first time, we are moving the event to Co-lumbus. Now members will have the opportunity to attend the presentations and witness the incredible amount of work these students voluntarily take on.
The ten teams that entered the competition in September have been whittled down to four by a small army of volunteer report graders from Columbus and Cincinnati. Teams will have 10 minutes to present and defend their written analysis of this year’s subject company, Vantiv. A panel of volunteer judges then has 10 minutes to question each team.
Once again this year, the CFA societies of Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton are collaborating for the Re-search Challenge. In the past, Wilmington was the site for the finals event due to the geographic center of the participating universities. In attempts to have more membership participation and increase value for the stu-dents, Columbus was selected as the local finals site for 2017.
“A Day in the Life” will be one of the features of the event. Local charterholders will speak about their job roles and career paths. Speakers are being selected from an array of positions, as this is designed to give partici-pants a better understanding of the breadth of investment careers. “Ask a Hiring Manager” is another of the highlights. This panel discussion is devised to inform attendees of the current state of the job market, provide tips for the job search, and allow for Q&A.
Capping off the event will be a networking happy hour, where students and society members will have a chance to chat and unwind. Society members are welcome to attend the event to watch presentations, hear fellow society members speak, and enjoy some food and drink. Inside CFA Columbus Special Reports
Columbus Contributes to Global Brand Campaign
The CFA Institute launched a global brand cam-
paign in 2016 aimed at increasing aware-
ness and recognition to benefit charterhold-
ers. The first year made investments over
three separate waves, which targeted differ-
ent geographies and made design improve-
ments with each iteration.
This included marketing messages on TV
channels (Bloomberg and Tennis Channel),
print advertisements in The New York Times,
The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and
also billboards, posters, and bus wraps in ar-
eas with high traffic.
At the end of 2016, CFA Columbus joined the
initiative in partnership with the John Glenn Inter-
national Airport (CMH). All three concourses have
80” monitors on the side walls that will display our
advertisements in a rotation. Look at the side walls
going to or coming back from your next flight.
Approximately 1 in 8 advertisements shown will be
ours and are shown for 10 seconds at a time. At
present, we are primarily in a rotation with JPMor-
gan Chase. This advertisement spot will remain in
use through 2017, though the marketing message
is going to change to reflect current activities and
broader campaign activity with the CFA Institute.
Take a photo of yourself with the advertisement
and email it to Ankit Gupta at
[email protected] for a special prize.

2016 Charter Recipient Award Night
Inside CFA Columbus
Education
The highlight event of the year for 30 individuals from our society was a dinner held on November 2nd, 2016. These 30 individuals completed the third CFA exam and had met all of the other requirements to receive their charter. For many, this was an event attended by friends and family who provided encouragement and sup-port through every grueling exam. If you recognize any of them, make sure to congratulate them on their ac-complishment.
