In fiscal 2015-17, the company grew earnings 49%, 44% and 35%. Revenue growth was 32%, 24% and 26% in the same years. Because the fiscal year ends in January, the market expects to get the final numbers for the year in February. Analysts see earnings ris- ing 33% on a 24% pop in revenue. While there has been some ero- sion in annual growth, the changes are too small to worry about. Margins are another thing to watch when fiscal 2018 results are released. Pretax margins stepped up from 8.3% to 10%, 11.8% and 12.9% in recent years. Salesforce.com’s stock sketched and broke out of three bases in 2017. Gains from the ideal buy point to the start of the next consoli- dation were 9% after an April break- out, then 7% and 11% from the brea- kouts in August and October. The current consolidation began forming in November. The poten- tial buy point is 109.29 with the 5% buy zone stretching to 114.75. Sales- force shares are trying to poke above that entry now. Because the earlier bases ad- vanced less than 20% after each breakout, the base count technical- ly remains first stage. But an inves- tor might expect the next breakout to behave more like a second-stage base than a first-stage one — prima- rily because the stock has already enjoyed a long run from its low in 2008. What does this mean to inves- tors? Investors should lower their expectations. If the stock breaks out in strong volume and an investor buys shares, then the investor should set the profit-taking level at 20%, or 131.14. The 20% gain is measured from the ideal buy point, not the place the investor buys. So the in- vestor who buys at the top of the 5% buy zone (114.75), for example, would sell at 131.14 for a 14% profit. Some investors often buy stocks high in the 5% buy zone and then complain that they rarely see a 20% gain. This will happen if they are measuring from their entry rather than the proper ideal entry. Publishing software provider Adobe Systems ADBE ends its fiscal year in November. In 2015-17, earn- ings rose 56%, 45% and 43%. Reve- nue increased 16%, 22% and 25% in the same years. The Street expects earnings to grow 29% in fiscal 2018 on a reve- nue gain of 19%. Pretax margin in 2017 was 37.5%, the highest in at least nine years. Adobe broke out of bases in Janu- ary and October in 2017. The Janu- ary breakout led to a 42% gain in about eight months. The October breakout brought a 12% gain in about five weeks. The buy point is 186.37. Adobe inched above the buy point recent- ly, but volume was below average and declining. Watch to see if big volume can kick in and thereby vali- date the breakout. 6 Up Blackrock BLK Fnce-Invsmnt Mgt 555.5 6.24 vs 5.14 +21.4` +3.6 3469 +20` 88 87 Educational Dvlpmnt EDUC Media-Books 16.70 0.52 vs 0.31 +67.7a .. 38.9 +27 99 97 Jp Morgan Chase JPM Banks-Money Cntr 112.7 r1.62 vs 1.58 +2.5a –4.1 28119 +7.8` 62 82 Pnc Finl Svcs Grp PNC Banks-Supr Rgional 151.8 2.32 vs 1.97 +17.8` +5.5 4740 +13` 85 79 Skyline SKY Bldg-Mbile/Mfg & Rv 21.18 0.26 vs –0.07 +471` .. 57.8 –10 81 99 Wells Fargo & Co WFC Banks-Money Cntr 62.55 1.75 vs 0.96 +82.3` +65 24695 +6.3` 80 71 4 Down Loop Industries Inc LOOP Chemicals-Plastics 16.55 –0.20 vs –0.02 .. .. .... .. 2 64 Sonic Foundry Inc SOFO Comptr Sftwr-Dsktp 2.65 –0.36 vs –0.19 .. .. 8.3 –12 13 3 Taylor Devices Inc TAYD Mchnry-Gen Indstrl 13.00 0.02 vs 0.27 –92.6 .. 4.8 –38 43 20 Volt Info Science VISI Comml Svcs-Stffng 4.40 –0.34 vs 0.18 .. .. 289 –16 13 75 The Big Cap 20 is a computer- generated watch list of leading growth stocks. INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY

San Francisco’s Salesforce.comCRM

hasshown consistentlystrong earn-ings and revenue growth of late.

In fiscal 2015-17, the companygrew earnings 49%, 44% and 35%.Revenue growth was 32%, 24% and26% in the same years.

Because the fiscal year ends inJanuary, the market expects to getthe final numbers for the year inFebruary. Analysts see earnings ris-ing 33% on a 24% pop in revenue.

While there has been some ero-sion in annual growth, the changesare too small to worry about.

Margins are another thing towatch when fiscal 2018 results arereleased. Pretax margins steppedup from 8.3% to 10%, 11.8% and12.9% in recent years.

Salesforce.com’s stock sketchedand broke out of three bases in2017. Gains from the ideal buypoint to the start of the next consoli-dation were 9% after an Aprilbreak-out, then 7% and 11% from the brea-kouts in August and October.

The current consolidation beganforming in November. The poten-tial buy point is 109.29 with the 5%buy zone stretching to 114.75. Sales-force shares are trying to pokeabove that entry now.

Because the earlier bases ad-vanced less than 20% after eachbreakout, the base count technical-ly remains first stage. But an inves-tor might expect the next breakoutto behave more like a second-stagebase than a first-stage one — prima-rily because the stock has already

enjoyed a long run from its low in2008.

What does this mean to inves-tors? Investors should lower theirexpectations.

If the stock breaks out in strongvolume and an investor buysshares, then the investor should setthe profit-taking level at 20%, or131.14. The 20% gain is measuredfrom the ideal buy point, not theplace the investor buys. So the in-vestor who buys at the top of the 5%buy zone (114.75), for example, would sell at 131.14 for a 14% profit.

Some investors often buy stockshigh in the 5% buy zone and thencomplain that they rarely see a 20%gain. This will happen if they aremeasuring from their entry ratherthan the proper ideal entry.

Publishing software providerAdobe SystemsADBE ends its fiscalyear in November. In 2015-17, earn-ings rose 56%, 45% and 43%. Reve-nue increased 16%, 22% and 25% inthe same years.

The Street expects earnings togrow 29% in fiscal 2018 on a reve-nue gain of 19%.

Pretax margin in 2017 was 37.5%,the highest in at least nine years.

Adobe broke out of bases in Janu-ary and October in 2017. The Janu-ary breakout led to a 42% gain inabout eight months. The Octoberbreakout brought a 12% gain inabout five weeks.

The buy point is 186.37. Adobeinched above the buy point recent-ly, but volume was below averageand declining. Watch to see if bigvolume can kick in and thereby vali-date the breakout.
