WELCOME BACK EVENTBY STUDENT LIFE
It is the start of the 2017/2018 Academic Year and ACK’s Student Life organized a Welcome Back event where new students and returning ones enjoy live music, food vendors and different activities.
The Welcome Back event took place in the garden in front of Building 1. Vendors from “Kout Food Group” were selling to students and staff a variety of food including Taco Bell, Burger King and Pizza Hut.
The Music Club performed Pop, R&B and Rock hits live and the “Imagine Club” duplicated the ACK logo using only rubric’s Cubes.
This event is always a great way to welcome everyone back and give students and staff fun ways to interact and socialize.
We wish everyone a great semester ahead.

MEET ACK’S MAGAZINE TEAM
Sayuri Gunawardena Writer
Tasneim Kamal Writer
At the beginning of each semester, all ACK students are invited to join the Inside ACK - Student Magazine Committee (previously known as Student Newsletter).
We are happy to introduce the students on the right as our magazine team for this semester. Each one of these students is talented in his/her own way and has shown great dedication and passion. We also have to mention one more member who was not able to join them in the picture, Sabah Hussain, who will be a contributor to the magazine.
The team consists of a photographer, graphic designer, writers, and contributors. Their tasks include covering different activities and events on campus, conducting interviews and surveys with students, staff and ACK’s community, writing articles about various topics and improving the general content and look of the magazine.
We look forward to share all the ideas they are working on and hope this magazine gives you an insight into ACK’s campus life.
For suggestions and ideas to include in ‘Inside ACK’, please email [email protected].

2000’S MUSIC CONCERT
The ACK Music Club performed on the 15th of September to family, friends and fans. The theme of the concert was “Hits of the early 2000’s”.
They covered celebrated artists including Lincoln Park, Britney Spears and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The concert was a great success and had wonderful energy to it. The Music Club enjoyed throwing it back to music from the 2000’s that everyone appreciates and has memories with.
We would like to thank all the members of the Music Club for their dedication, talent and appreciation to music.

ACADEMIC ADVISINGBY NATALIE JAQUES, SENIOR MANAGER – TEACHING & LEARNING CENTER
You will have all by now met with your Academic Advisor who is the key person to meet with throughout your studies at ACK. If you have not met or contacted your Academic Advisor so far please call them or send a brief email explaining that you do require to meet with them.
Here are some tips on getting the most out of meeting with your Academic Advisor:
1. Get to know your Academic Advisor
Every student has different academic and career dreams and goals of what he/she wishes to achieve. Every student also has different ways to learn effectively and different circumstances which may limit his/her in learning effectively. It is important to get to know your Academic Advisor so that they can understand your dreams and goals and are familiar with your unique circumstances.
Discuss with your Academic Advisors how you are progressing in your studies and what you are doing to stay on track to meet your graduation requirements. This may be useful to stay motivated or it may help you to get back on the right path to success.
Academic Advisors care about your small achievements towards success as well as your concerns. Knowing your Academic Advisor will ensure they are in the best position to guide and support you in progressing through your studies in order to graduate on time.
12 Inside ACK
2. Meet with your Academic Advisor before problems arise
Keep your Academic Advisor’s contact information handy (i.e., including email address and phone number, consultation hours, and office location). You can meet with your Academic Advisor as often as needed so it is best to discuss any concerns or potential issues as early as possible in order to prevent issues occurring. If your Academic Advisor schedules a mandatory meeting with you then it is important to attend so that they assist you in resolving problems which best suits your needs and circumstances.
3. Requesting a meeting with your Academic Advisor
It is best to meet with your Academic Advisor during their assigned consultation hours so that they may give you their full attention when they are not teaching or preparing for classes. For more extensive advising sessions, appointments can be made by completing an Academic Advice Request Form (ACK.FO.VPAC.41.01). It is easiest to complete this form Online through the ACK portal or alternatively completing a hard copy which is available at the student counters in your relevant School or Department.
When you have a meeting arranged with your Academic Advisor it is important to think through what you would like to discuss and be prepared by knowing any information relevant to your issue. This might include reading through any related ACK policies and procedures or researching alternative unit descriptions which meet the curriculum graduation requirements.
Constructive feedback about the Academic Advising process is welcomed at any time throughout the semester and may be forwarded to [email protected].

ACK ENGINEERING ALUM BUILDING NETWORKS IN AUSTRALIA
ACK Engineering Alum, Abdelbaset Nazzal, only moved to Australia in June this year but he is already making the most of his international experience in Melbourne. Abdelbaset graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electronics and Controls), applied for a Master of Management for Engineers at CQUniversity through the ACK International Cooperation Office and started his course in July.
Although he is busy with his first semester and the excitement of living in one of the world’s most lively cities, Abdelbaset made time to visit Engineers Australia Head Office in Melbourne. “I became a member of Engineers Australia while still a student at ACK (current ACK students receive free membership to Engineers Australia) and this was a great opportunity to visit their Head Office for a tour, and to learn more about their upcoming member events and resources such as the online library to help with my studies. I’m really looking forward to participating in some of their field trips and networking events’, he shared.
For more information about Postgraduate Master’s programs at CQUniversity (positioned in the top 2% of the world’s universities - Times Higher Education rankings), visit the ACK International Cooperation Office (Building 1, Floor 1, Room F05).

CONFLICT OF BEAUTYBy: Tasneim Kamal
Every thought of mine carries your thoughts that you forgotYour morals that you decided to sellI know you cry for help and I know it so wellSo let me be your helping handbe your eyes when to wonders you are blindLet me feel your pain, just let me erase it all awayLet me love you unconditionally and blindLet me cure your heart and fix it, oh darling let it beatYou’re a queen of your own thoughtsYour knowledge is throwing roses at your feetA staircase of roses that rises you up to your own self worth and self esteemAt the end of the road you see a mirror that reads “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”Now its easy to spot the snakes that have only made you colderThen I dare ask that mirror who’s the kindest of them allBecause no matter the amount of times they tried to brainwash you, “fairest” is not a measure for a human’s worthOutside beauty means nothing, you measure beautiful by a person’s mental healthFor a person who wears a coat of flawless skin accompanied by a matching mask doesn’t matter if he is sick in the headStep a side let me tell you about the truth that recently hasn’t been said, that has been lost in translation decade after decadeTruth is, no one shall ever love you if you were ugly. However, let me educate you: ugly’s definition is the lack of beauty in one’s heartUgly is spiritual and does not consist of a person’s face, body, or physical features, and it never did from the very startUgly is a disease in the heart and no it is not genetic nor a virus that by accident you can inhaleYou choose to be an ugly being and for people to view you that wayYou chose to be ugly when you chose to behave in a despicable sort of wayDon’t dare tell me it was a defense mechanism that you developed over the years and you had no control over it whatsoeverOr choosing ugly people as friends then you come running back telling me good people don’t exist. Excuse me? How many have you met out of 8 billion? Those people who you claim changed you were the ones you free willingly chose to let them in ignoring all the others who didn’t dare have a fare complexionHow didn’t they dare?Excuses excuses.. When will they ever stop?Disappointing...Ugly is wide spread and I hope words have the power to make a changeI hope those words coming out of a simple girl’s heart would remove limits from your mind and let you escape its cageMake it set your heart on fire and to your mind let it bring out its rageRage for how ugly has been lost in translation decade after decadeBut not anymore.
