In October 2019, ACK’s Health and Safety Department organized the third annual Blood Donation Campaign. The blood donations took place on 15th, 16th and 17th October 2019 in the ACK Auditorium. The event was sponsored by ACK MyPrint and the Online Institute.

There were two professional medical doctors during the campaign for any queries regarding the eligibility of donating blood. To ensure the safety of both the patients and donors, below are some of the requirements broadcasted to ACK staff and students in order to be eligible to donate blood:

• Over 18 years old.• Free of diabetes (type 1).• Not anemic.• Body weight over 50 kg.• Not having a fever or flu.• Not on any antibiotics.• No tattoos or blood transfusions received (except

with one’s own blood) in the past 12 months.

Throughout the three days, ACK students and staff donated 260 blood bags to the Central Blood Bank of Kuwait.

The campaign was very interactive with various activities and prizes including a laptop, tablet, media pad, gift to each blood donor, beverages and a game based on blood type knowledge.

On Saturday, 19 October 2019, ACK’s Male Football Team participated in the first game of the season in the UAAK (University Athletics Association of Kuwait) tournament. The game was located in the AUM campus. ACK won 4-0 against KCST.

We interviewed the goalkeeper of ACK’s Football Team, Fawaz Al Ayoubi regarding their first match.

1. What is the best part about competing?It pushes you to try your best to win. Your mindset is extremely important in determining your performance. To win, you must work as a team.

2. What emotions do you feel when you play well?When I play well, I feel very energized, especially when my teammates praise me for finishing the game with a clean sheet.

3. Your team won 4-0. How does it feel to have a one-sided victory?For my teammates, it felt great. However, as the goalkeeper, I didn’t have much fun in the game.

4. Why do you think your team did well?I believe we did well because we train hard, we work as a team and we always try our best.

ACK FOOTBALL TEAMUAAK TOURNAMENT 5. Is there anything you wish your team did better?I don’t think they needed to do anything better; they were perfect in that game.

6. What, in your opinion, makes a good football player?A lot of aspects make a good football player. However, there are three main things. First of all, you have to train hard; as commonly said, “practice makes perfect”. Second, you have to eat well; a healthy, well-balanced diet is vital for your energy and overall well-being. Lastly, you have to have a good sleeping schedule.

7. What is your team hoping to improve for the upcoming matches?We are hoping to finish most of the games with a clean sheet.

MOVEMBER

On 12 November 2019, ACK’s Public Relations (PR) Department hosted their annual “Movember” event to raise awareness about men’s health issues. This year they supported Movember in a very active and energetic way by organizing different sport activities and prizes for the winners. The multiple activities were conducted by One 2 One Kuwait, a lifestyle coaching and personal training at home business.

Many students showed their support by cheering the participants. The prizes

were distributed to the first, second and third place winners. Prizes included Fitbit watches, vouchers from LoFat and discounts from Dagla (Dishdasha).

Sunday, 20 October 2019, marked the start of the semi-annual ACK Art Gallery Competition. Many students participated in this event showcasing their passion for art and unleashing their creativity in their own unique way. There were several paintings created using oil, water colors, sculptures, as well as the recreation of popular movies and characters. The event ended on Thursday, 24 October 2019. The winner of the Art Gallery Competition was Shaikhah Al-Rashidi.

1. Briefly introduce yourself.My name is Shaikah Al-Rashidi and I am 20 years old. I study at ACK’s School of Aviation,

2. When did you become interested in art?My interest in art started at a very young age. I’ve always been trying to improve drawing by practicing a lot of sketches. Sometime later, my family and my school art teacher found out that I have a passion for art and they have been encouraging me to keep drawing ever since. Also, I follow a lot of art accounts on social media and tutorials to get inspiration.

3. When did you join the ACK Art Club and why?I joined the ACK Art Club in the 2016-2017 academic year to have a place where I can share the same interests and passion with others.

4. How was your experience being a part of the Art Gallery competition?The competition was exciting and fun. I heard about the competition from the Art Club through our

WhatsApp group chat when the Art Club President discussed the theme and competition with us. After that we went to take our canvases from Student Life in Building 2. For the drawing, I sketched the outlines with a pencil and then added acrylic paint and pastels. For the highlights, I used a white gel pen.

5. What inspired you to submit this portrait rather than any other one?The competition was about fantasy and the portrait I submitted displayed that theme.

6. Did you expect to win the competition?I tried my best to provide a well-drawn portrait. It’s a fun event at the end of the day because I’m a part of a competition that I’m very passionate about and enjoy.

FIRST-AID DAY EVENT

The Occupational Health and Safety Department held its 7th Health Day on 13 November 2019. The theme for this year’s event was “First-Aid” to raise awareness on the crucial care you should provide when a person is injured or sick until a medical team is available. Various activities were organized by student groups from the School of Business as part of their Event Management Course.

The Health Days are special occasions for the wider ACK family to gather and have fun with a purpose. Special guest of honor at the event was the Australian Ambassador to Kuwait, His Excellency Jonathon Gilbert. He was greeted by the Advisor to the President, Dr. Usameh Jamali and the Health Day Committee Chairperson, Mr. Abdulmohsen Al Rifai. Ambassador Gilbert expressed his delight at the energy and creativity of students in the organization and management of the many activities.

A very pleasing dimension of the Health Days is the growing attendance by children and younger siblings of ACK students and staff. For this year, the ACK community was able to donate 1,400KD to Cancer Aware Nation (CAN).

LEARNING DIFFERENCES AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY

“Learning differences are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math. They can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention. It is important to realize that learning differences can affect an individual’s life beyond academics and can impact relationships with family, friends and in the workplace.” - Learning Disabilities Association of America.

On 14 October 2019, ACK’s Student Support Center organized a Learning Differences and Mental Health Awareness Day on campus. It included posters displaying celebrities and role models with LD and how they not only live with it but succeed despite it.

The Student Support Center made sure to explain the types, causes and tips on learning differences and mental health. They delivered important information to students and staff as well as distributed blue ribbon badges, cookies and brochures to help raise awareness.

The Student Life Department recently organized an ACK Student Bazaar to support students with businesses. Any student who was a business owner had the chance to set up a booth to promote their business on campus and also to inspire other students to follow their passion.

The bazaar included numerous businesses from varying fields including beauty salons, food, apparel and arts and crafts. All the booths were located in front of Building 2 from 27 to 31 October 2019.

Interview with Hamad Al-Shatti By Rahma Yousef

1. Can you briefly introduce yourself?My name is Hamad Al-Shatti and I study Human Resources at ACK.

2. When did you join the ACK basketball team and why?I joined the ACK Basketball Team in 2017. I played basketball since I was 10 years old so I was always drawn toward the sport.

3. What was the most recent game/tournament you have played with the ACK Basketball Team?Last game was the UAAK tournament last year. We scored 35 points against GUST University. We have many games scheduled very soon!

4. How does the ACK Basketball Team work together? Our team is cohesive and we always play well together. We are all one. We actually train twice a week and make sure that before every game, we remind ourselves that with team work we will always win.

5. How do you prepare for a game? I eat and sleep well before the game to be physically ready and to be able to focus on winning.

6. What advice would you give to someone wanting to play basketball?It’s never too late to learn basketball. Just do your best and you will achieve your goals.
