St. Peters resident Brryan Jackson turned heartbreak into motivation to get his life back on track. “I had been trying to lose weight since last year,” Jackson said. “One of my mentors passed away, so I wasn’t in a very good place. It was a really hard time, but I knew I needed to get healthy again.”

Brryan started a low-carb diet to help him lose weight, then searched for a personal trainer to speed up the process. He happened to already know David Griffith, a personal trainer at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, who invited Brryan to come to his Total Body Camp group personal training class. After six months of taking the class and eating right, Brryan lost 50 pounds.

“What I like about the class is it’s not a large class, so you still feel like you’re getting that one-on-one personal training,” Brryan said. “I like that David knows how his clients want to be pushed. He realizes that nothing is one size fits all—everybody is different. He listens to the difference and he accommodates that in a way that gets people the results fast.”

Brryan also said he enjoys the group dynamic of the class because it feels like you’re not just taking a class at the Rec-Plex, but you are part of a community. Everyone is on their own fitness journey, but they’re all in it together.

“I’ve met some phenomenal people,” he said. “We cry together, we fight together. It makes you want to come to class.” He says even on the days when he doesn’t feel like coming to class because it’s too cold or he’s too tired, he wants to come not just for himself but to support others in the class.

“I believe 80 to 90 percent of losing weight or getting in shape is mental. Before you set your goals and start thinking about the results, you need to create a game plan from A to Z,” Brryan said. He added that once you get your mentality down, going to the gym and eating right will come. You have to love the process, and learn to live in the process—then the results will follow.

Now that Brryan’s lost the weight, he’s more focused on conditioning his body, bulking up the muscles and overall staying healthy. “I want to be internally healthy to produce external health,” he said. “My goal now is to take my knowledge from this journey over the past year and spread it to other people.”

WHAT TO DO DURING SNOW & ICEThere are two simple things you can do to help St. Peters’ snow/ice removal operations during a winter storm:

1. Park your car on the driveway.2. Move solid waste carts to your driveway.Clearing obstacles from the street allows snow plow drivers to clear snow more quickly and place de-icing chemicals evenly.

Sign up now for the FREE Nixle service to receive urgent messages from the City of St. Peters, including updates regarding snow emergencies and how they may affect City services or programs. Subscribe to receive urgent texts, emails or both at www.stpetersmo.net/Subscribe.

Carol Connell, Ward 1 Carol Connell was nominated by Chris Connell for helping neighbors

and strangers on a regular basis, and in particular for helping her elderly neighbor, Carolyn Swanson, after she had lost her husband. Carol helps her around the house regularly and even helped her brother move to a

nursing home. Carolyn calls Carol her “guardian angel.”

Dan Fresenburg, Ward 1 Dan Fresenburg, a business owner in Ward 1, was nominated by Barbara Fresenburg for assisting a woman at a gas station. Dan was putting gas

in his own vehicle when he saw a woman with three kids in her back seat and only $5 cash in her hands. He guessed by her facial expression that it was probably all she had to pay for gas, so he decided to fill her gas tank, paid the bill and did not ask for anything in return. She was

very thankful for his generosity.

More Random Acts of Kindness Nominees Honored

Two more people were honored recently with Random Acts of Kindness awards at a meeting of the St. Peters Board of Aldermen. The program

recognizes St. Peters residents and business owners who go above and beyond in displaying acts of kindness in our community.

To nominate someone you know who went above and beyond in an act of kindness, visit www.stpetersmo.net. Nominees must reside or

Amanda Ward Country Hill Farm

Amanda Ward, 31, grew up in North County and bought her first house in the Country Hill Farm neighborhood just over a year ago. “I was mainly looking in the St. Charles County area because it was a good financial decision,” she said. “I didn’t want to go further west than Mid Rivers Mall Drive because I was working downtown.” She ended up just barely west of Mid Rivers Mall Drive, but after a year of searching, making offers on houses and getting outbid, she was happy to have finally found “the one.”

“It was a really hard time to be buying a house, because if anything somewhat decent in a good price range came on and you weren’t there the second it went online, it was gone,” Amanda said. One house she bid on in St. Charles was outbid by eight people on the day it went on the market. Eventually, Amanda’s real estate agent knocked on the door of a home with a “for sale by owner” sign. An elderly couple had just put the sign in the yard that day. Amanda’s real estate agent immediately called her and told her she might like the home.

“So, this little old lady gave me a tour of the house,” Amanda said. “And honestly, I think that whole interaction is the reason why I ended up getting it, because the owners liked me and wanted me to have their house.”

Amanda has no complaints about her new home in Country Hill Farm—she loves her big yard and that her neighborhood is close to a park, trail and a lot of nearby restaurants and businesses.

“Plus it’s just nice, it’s safe,” she added.

A common narrative these days is that millennials want to live in urban centers—that they’re not interested in suburban areas such as St. Peters. But, we’ve found that St. Peters is becoming a popular place for millennials who are looking for their first home.

Like any other homebuyer, millennials are drawn to the many benefits of living in St. Peters, such as safe and quiet neighborhoods, close proximity to many parks and trails, friendly neighbors and new businesses—with just a short drive to attractions and employers in St. Louis. These are some of the same reasons that Money Magazine chose St. Peters No. 15 on the

publication’s Top 100 Best Places to Live in America for 2017.

Michelle Walker, president of the St. Charles County Association of Realtors, says that while there are a lot of millennials who aren’t

buying homes right away due to student debt, “it’s starting to trend up in the market. The most affordable housing (under $200,000) is getting gobbled up the fastest.”

St. Peters offers affordable homes in some wonderfulneighborhoods, which also means that they’re in high demand and move quickly off the market. A number of the millennials moving here loved growing up in the St. Charles County area and wanted to return. The hot local real estate market made it a challenge, but here are a few stories of millennials who managed to find that perfect first home in St. Peters:

More Millennials Are Choosing St. Peters as Their Hometown

From friendly, quiet neighborhoods to

nearby parks and trails, millennials are finding

a lot to like about living in St. Peters.

My neighborhood is nice, it’s safe.

Page 9: INSIDE: 2017 in Review • Millennials Choosing St. Peters ... Hometown...• esidential construction projects 1,874 r worth $17,667,384 – includes 22 single-family homes worth $5,637,962

Danielle Kahn Plum CreekDanielle Kahn, 25, of the Plum Creek subdivision, ran into similar challenges in her search for an affordable home. A St. Charles County native, Danielle knew she didn’t want to live anywhere else. “I knew I didn’t want to go into the city,” she said. “I work in Creve Coeur, so I knew I wanted to be off the Page extension because it’s a straight shot and it’s so much easier to get to work.”Danielle is a nurse at Mercy Hospital off Highway 270. In May of this year, Danielle graduated nursing school from St. Charles Community College, and she really wasn’t looking to a buy a house just yet. “I wanted to save up a little at first, but then I just happened to be looking—because you get a little nosy trying to see where you can get the most for your money—and I saw one and I was like, oh my gosh, I love this house and it was in this neighborhood,” she said. While she passed on that home, Danielle looked at four more houses and put offers down on two of them in the Plum Creek subdivision before she found “the one.”Like Amanda’s story above, Danielle’s Realtor noticed a house that was “for sale by owner.” They decided to check it out, and it ended up being “perfect.” Danielle closed on the house within a month.

“These houses are really cute—they’re older, but really with the location, you can’t beat it,” she said. After only a month of

being in her new house, she’s already in love with it and the neighborhood. “The neighborhood’s great,” she said. “My neighbors are awesome—one of them mowed my grass before I even moved in, another said I could use her driveway any time I need to—everybody’s been great.” Even though the majority of her neighbors are older than her, Danielle is seeing houses pop up on the market all the time and a lot more younger couples are starting to move in.

Andy and Erynn Ballman Hickory Ridge

Newlyweds Andy and Erynn Ballman, also natives of St. Charles County, have noticed a trend of younger people moving into their established neighborhood in Hickory Ridge subdivision. They moved in just over a year and a half ago and they love how quiet their neighborhood is compared to newer subdivisions. They also love the fact that they are right in between two new Walmart Neighborhood Markets.

“It’s a peaceful, close-knit neighborhood,” Erynn, 32, said.

“It seems really safe,” Andy, 31, said. “I grew up in O’Fallon, then we moved out to Flint Hill, but I like the area. If we have kids, there are a lot of neighbors.”

Andy works all over the region as a carpenter, so like Danielle, he touts the benefits of being so close to the Page extension. Erynn is a dental assistant in Chesterfield and she loves living so close to work.

Before they even moved in, the Ballmans benefited from St. Peters’ Sewer Lateral Repair Program, which provides assistance for the repair of the privately owned sewer pipes that connect residents’ homes to public sewers.

The City of St. Peters also offers some Community Development Block Grant home programs for qualifying residents, including the First Time Home Buyer Program and the Home Improvement Loan Program.

Winter Energy Saving Tips

It’s officially winter in St. Peters, which could mean higher gas and electric bills for many residents in order to keep their houses warm. But, there are ways you can conserve energy while still staying warm and comfortable during the upcoming cold winter months. Many of the tips below are easy, no-cost actions that you can take now to increase your savings; others are simple and inexpensive things you can do all year long:

1. Take advantage of the sun. • Open your curtains during the day to allow the heat of the sun naturally warm your home. • Close your curtains when it starts to get dark to reduce the chill from the cold windows.

2. Cover drafty windows. • Install tight-fitting, insulating drapes or shades on windows. • Use a heavy duty, clear, plastic sheet sealed tightly on a frame or tape clear plastic film to the inside of your window frames.

3. Adjust the temperature. • Set your thermostat as low as possible while still being comfortable. The lower you set it, the more you will save. When you are asleep, turn the thermostat down 10-15 degrees lower than normal—this can help save around 10 percent a year on your heating and cooling bills. • Use a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature setting while you sleep or when no one is home. • If you have a heat pump, maintain a moderate setting or use a programmable thermostat.

4. Find and seal leaks. • Add caulk or weather-stripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows. • Seal the air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes, gaps around chimneys, recessed lights in insulated ceilings and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets. • Add insulation around heat ducts when they are located in unconditioned spaces such as attics, crawl spaces and garages.

5. Maintain your heating systems. • Replace your filter once a month. • Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed. Make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes. • Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators.

6. Reduce heat loss from the fireplace. • If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney shaft. • If you do use the fireplace, install tempered glass doors and a heat-air exchange system that blows warmed air back into the room. • Purchase grates made of C-shaped metal tubes to draw cool room air into the fireplace and circulate warm air back into the room. • Add caulking around the fireplace hearth. • Check to see that your fireplace damper is tightly closed, when it is not in use.

7. Lower your water heating and electric costs. • Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). • Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs. • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use. • Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips and turn power strips off when equipment is not in use or use “smart” power strips. • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. • Air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.

Ameren has several rebates available for their residential customers on energy-efficient products purchased by Feb. 28, 2018. Products include smart thermostats, ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump water heater, room air purifier, HVAC systems and an instant discount on LED lighting. Learn more at www.ameren.com.

Try to find at least one new action in the lists above to help you conserve energy, save money, keep warm and be more environmentally conscious. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to be “green”, it can be as easy as a few simple lifestyle changes.

Another year of PROGRESSLooking through this issue of My Hometown, you can read some stories that really give you a good picture of St. Peters and the progress we continue to make as a community. Our Year in Review spread on pages 4-5 is full of numbers and notes that help paint a picture of what your municipal government

accomplished in 2017. Our economic update on page 6 gives you an idea of the amazing number of businesses that are building in St. Peters or opening their doors here. On pages 8-9, we have a story about millennials that gives you a good picture of why people of all generations consider St. Peters a great place to live and why we were ranked by Money Magazine #15 on the Top 100 Best Places to Live in America. And, of course, we have all of the other stories about the many amenities, programs and events that the City of St. Peters offer to our residents.I will throw out some more numbers that help paint a picture of St. Peters:Recent numbers show that homes here are flying off the market, more evidence that neighborhoods in St. Peters are in demand. The St. Louis Business Journal said that in 2016 St. Peters sold the most homes in the St. Louis area—1,317 homes total—at the fourth-fastest rate (43 median days on the market). We have 25 parks, nearly 1,300 acres of parkland and 20-plus miles of trails in St. Peters. Access to recreation is one of the reasons that homebuyers find St. Peters’ neighborhoods so attractive. The millennials in this issue of My Hometown say they love their new neighborhoods and nearby parks and trails. Like so many other St. Peters residents, they also have come to really appreciate their neighbors. We have a lot of people in St. Peters who help others, and that helps make our community a great place to live. To recognize those folks, we started a “Random Acts of Kindness” program in 2017. See page 7 to read about a couple of those special people, and learn how you can nominate someone for recognition through the Random Acts of Kindness program.St. Peters is also a great place to do business. Here are some numbers that tell the story of an economic boom underway in St. Peters: We’ve experienced more than 2 million square feet of commercial space opening in St. Peters in the past year. Over the past two years, commercial construction has topped $200 million in total value. That includes construction of 37 new commercial buildings. No wonder Wallethub recently ranked St. Peters the nation’s 28th best small city in the nation to start a business.

We have some more exciting developments in the planning stages, so expect more great news in 2018 and beyond as we see more and more businesses opening their doors near your neighborhood. And, of course, that means more and more jobs for our wonderful area residents. The work we do as a municipal government always has a goal—to make the City of St. Peters, “My Hometown,” a beautiful place to live, work, play and visit. As Mayor and a proud resident, I am very pleased to see that the numbers and our accomplishments show that we continue to make so much progress in all of these areas. And, I’m very fortunate as Mayor to represent so many great people in our wonderful community. Our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

30 Years in My HometownLook around you at our beautiful trees and acres of parks. Many of us are blessed with friendly neighbors and a feeling of safety in our homes. A warm and comfortable hometown feel is here in our City, a City we can be proud of.

In my youth, I grew up in a small town close to Toledo, Ohio.

From that small town, I joined the United States Navy and served in San Diego, California. When my active service in the military was completed, my family moved to Missouri. I received my Honorable Discharge from the Navy 30 years ago. Moving to St. Peters was a very welcome change in our lives as we were ready to make a home here. We set out to find a place of worship, meet our neighbors and build a strong, close community. Our new neighbors eventually became as close as family. Having good neighbors helped when we were missing our own family members who live far away.

We each have a story to tell about our lives here in St. Peters. Some stories are short and some are very long and proud. While reading through the St. Peters At Its Best history book, I realized how many families in our City have a very long history of living here. Our street signs carry names of wonderful families that lived in St. Peters long ago, and many of their children decided to stay and raise their family here as well.

Our City has grown tremendously in the 30 years my family has lived here. Together as a community we have embraced opportunities and conquered challenges placed before us. As St. Peters continues to grow and prosper every day, we look around and realize that our hometown is not just a place to exist,

but a place to raise our families and build forever friendships.

St. Peters is our home. It’s where we can feel comfortable enough to be ourselves. It’s where we can raise our children to be honorable and respectful of others. It’s where we can all freely worship our Creator. We can freely lend a helping hand to a neighbor who may be someone else’s grandparent. This is where we have been planted and I will continue to bloom as I serve you, my neighbor. In the new year ahead, I hope life writes a beautiful new chapter in your St. Peters story.

As an Elected Official, it is my pledge to serve our community with honor and integrity at all times. I also pledge to be responsive to all concerns. You may contact me at 636-734-1883. If you are not on my “e-newsletter” list just email me at [email protected] to be included. (A couple of days before each Board of Aldermen meeting I will send you the agenda highlights and important links.) I am here to help and always remember that your concern is my concern!

Paying Respect at Veterans’ Gravesites Residents and guests alike came to participate in recent Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies in St Peters. In May, we will come together again on Memorial Day, to pay our respects to those veterans that have gone before us. And, if you have ever visited gravesites of U.S. Veterans, you may have noticed coins on the top of headstones that were left behind by previous visitors.

A coin left on the headstone is a message to the deceased veteran’s family that someone has visited their grave and paid their respects. Each type of coin left on the top of the headstone for the veteran has its own meaning.

A penny left on the top of the headstone means that the gravesite was visited. A nickel indicates that the person visiting the site trained at boot camp with the deceased veteran, while a dime means the person served with them in some capacity. A quarter left at the grave means that the person who left the coin was with the veteran when they were killed.

The money placed in national and state veteran’s cemeteries is collected and put towards future burial costs and cemetery maintenance.

The practice is believed to have first begun in the United States during the Vietnam War as a way to pay their respects to the fallen servicemen. While the practice is not always common, the practice of leaving behind mementos on top of gravestones dates back to the beginning of the human species as a way to pay respect to the deceased person.

In recent times, coins are used to indicate that someone has visited the grave site and wanted to let family and friends know that the veteran is not forgotten.

One common practice in the military is leaving behind challenge coins on the graves of deceased servicemen. These tokens usually bear the emblem of the deceased’s military unit. These challenge coins are usually left there by the service members and brothers-in-arms.

Challenge coins started gaining popularity during the Vietnam War when Special Forces units started using them. Eventually, the use of challenge coins became more widely used in the rest of

the U.S. military. Challenge coins are used to prove membership in an organization when challenged. They are also presented by unit commanders to a member of the unit in recognition for an achievement. St Peters has such a challenge coin to identify its Veterans Memorial.

So now you know about the significance of the coins on the headstone, on your next visit to our heroes’ resting place.

Keeping in Touch I believe it is very important to keep in touch with the residents living in Ward 4. Sometimes I’ll knock on doors in a neighborhood just to talk and see if there is anything I can help people with. Also, I often receive telephone calls and emails asking me for information. It’s also nice seeing everyone at their annual homeowner’s association meeting.

So many great things occurred in St. Peters during 2017, and I promise 2018 is going to be even better. To stay up-to-date with what’s going

on, sign up and receive the monthly UpFront newsletter via email. Another good resource is the My Hometown publication that is mailed directly to your home five times a year.

More and more people use social media these days. Several years ago, I starting using Facebook and I go on it daily. The page I created is used strictly for sharing updates and information with people across the City. I may post things about annual events, special storm debris pickups, road projects and a wide variety of other things I believe you’ll find useful. If you aren’t currently receiving my posts, log onto www.facebook.com/aldermanpatrickbarclay and send me a friend request so you can keep up with things throughout the entire year.

If I can ever be of service to you, feel free to contact me any time. My cell phone number is 636-795-8255 if you need to talk or send a text. Additionally, you can reach me by sending an email to [email protected] or drop me a private message on Facebook.

Thank you for your continued support. It’s an honor and a privilege to represent you on the St. Peters Board of Aldermen.

Resolve to Recycle More in 2018!Did you know in St. Peters that we create anywhere from 260-400 tons of waste nearly every day? That’s anywhere from 13-20 tractor trailer loads of trash per day. And do you know how much it costs the City to ship out that much waste every day? Around $6,000 a day! Just think of the savings if we could cut all that waste by recycling. If we just cut half of that waste, imagine what we could do with an extra $3,000 a day for our City.

The new year is upon us, so I ask that in 2018 we all resolve to recycle. Or, if you already recycle,

resolve to recycle more this year. Not only will it save the City and therefore you, as the residents, more money, but it will also help save our environment. Let’s put the landfill on a diet!

St. Peters’ Blue Bag Recycling Program makes it so easy to recycle, there’s no reason we can’t all pitch in a little more to create less

waste in 2018. A Brand New Year for St. Peters To Serve YouWhen the skies let loose with the fluffy white flakes of snow, our street crews work intensively to maintain and repair our roads in an effort to control pavement failure caused by the extreme changes in temperatures. They do their best keeping up with potholes that occur, especially this time of year with the fluctuating temperatures.

The street crews will be out in force repairing and replacing pavement. Some residents have

questioned how the determination is made as to where and when repairs or replacement of pavement is made unless there is an emergency where a pothole or deep crack needs to be fixed.

The City uses a guideline we call the “Pavement Management Program” that is designed to provide well-maintained, high-quality streets and sidewalks in our City at the lowest reasonable cost. A computer database contains maintenance records of every street in the City including the current pavement condition.

Planned levels of maintenance are carefully matched with available funds to achieve the best possible level of service across the City. That is a big task since we have nearly 550 lane miles of streets.

I am told that properly installed concrete pavement has a life span of about 35 years and that the average useful life of properly installed

ELECTED OFFICIALS - Continued from page 15

My Hometown | stpetersmo.net

asphalt pavement is 17 years. You will see the Streets Department crews in your neighborhoods periodically sealing cracks and performing miscellaneous spot repairs to extend the life of the pavement.

Older streets in the City were constructed directly on a compacted soil sub-grade. Since 1998, all new pavement placed in the City of St. Peters has been constructed on four-inch thick aggregate rock base providing a harder, more stable base, which helps to extend the life of the pavement.

If you see a pothole in need of repair, be sure to report it. Call me and leave a message and I will take care of it for you, or you can report it directly to the City’s Citizen Action Center at 636-477-6600, ext. 1225. Our crews will work to get the pothole filled right away.

I also want to thank all of you for your patience as we worked to improve Mexico Road this past year. I know that there were a lot of lane closures that caused delays during the project as we replaced defective concrete. The good news is that we now have a better roadway for all of us to use!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday, and all of us at City Hall are working for a great and prosperous New Year. Let’s also keep our servicemen and women in our prayers and wish them the strength and courage to bring us back the freedoms we look forward to each day. If you see one of them in uniform, please stop and shake their hand and say “Thank You.” It means a lot to them.

Please save those aluminum cans for our “Pennies for Patriots Program” and drop them off on the west side of City Hall in the Brown Dumpster or at Recycle City in the big Blue Dumpster.

All the money raised goes to the USO at Lambert Field for the guys and gals that serve us here and across the sea. It’s a home away from home to make their stay comfortable. God Bless America!

Please remember that as your alderman, my door is always open. Contact me with any concern you might have. I am proud to be your alderman and value your comments. My phone number is 636-485-5710. My e-mail address is [email protected].

Call Animal Control for Strays or Wildlife ProblemsMany of us have probably come upon a stray dog or cat, or even some wildlife in our neighborhoods, but what happens when these animals become destructive? Did you know that St. Peters Animal Control loans out free traps to St. Peters residents to catch stray cats, feral cats and wild animals that pose a threat or danger to individuals or their property?

You may think that feeding or giving water to stray animals is helping them, but Animal Control discourages residents from this practice and strongly urges you to NEVER feed wild animals. Doing so can create a new set of problems for these animals, such as a loss of fear of humans or their ability to fend for themselves, which can put them at great risk.

When it comes to stray or wild animals, it’s best to call Animal Control first. Oftentimes they can make suggestions to prevent damage caused by wildlife, but sometimes the animals may need to be removed.

If the animal is indeed a stray, Animal Control officers have the best chance of locating the owner or finding new owners through the St. Charles County Pet Adoption Center. If the animal is feral, the shelter will be able to determine if appropriate placement is an option.

To report lost or found pets, please call St. Peters Animal Control at 636-278-2255. Visit the Animal Control department page at www.stpetersmo.net for more information.

Our annual recycling contest begins in May and ends in November each year —it’s another way that the City of St. Peters promotes our recycling program and rewards residents who recycle. Residents can participate in the program simply by completing and mailing in the “Promise Postcard” included in the pack of Blue Bags delivered annually to each home.

Each resident who submits a Promise Postcard throughout the year is entered to win either a monthly prize drawing or the year-end grand prize drawing. Don’t forget: If you’re running low on Blue Bags, simply tie an empty Blue Bag to the handle of your trash cart as a signal to the driver to leave you a new roll, or stop by Recycle City or City Hall.
