North Central Michigan Community Foundation 2015 Annual Report

We connect people who care about the future of Crawford, Ogemaw and Oscoda Counties with the causes closest to their

hearts. By encouraging individuals to create permanent charitable

endowments to meet the ever-changing needs of our communities, we can match

donors’ charitable interests with worthwhile causes by giving

grants and scholarships to area programs and students.

The North Central Michigan Community Foundation (NCMCF) board of directors is pleased to share our 2015 Annual Report with you. This year we sent more than $131,000 in grants and scholarships back into the communities we serve. We also added five new endowment funds in 2015. You can find a list of all our charitable funds online at www.ncmcf.org.

The NCMCF Youth Advisory Councils (YAC) are made up of young people ages 12 to 21 from our three-county service area. In 2015, they awarded $14,809 in grants from the Crawford, Ogemaw and Oscoda County Kellogg Youth Funds, all for the benefit of youth in our communities.

Giving Back and Spreading the Word From leadership programs to human service and health care projects, our grants are the very heart of our work in the community. Each and every grant listed in this report is possible because of our donors. It takes the generosity of individuals to create these opportunities to support our local nonprofits and students.

We hope as you read through this 2015 Annual Report, that you feel proud of the good work taking place in North Central Michigan and appreciate all those who have made a commitment to giving back to our local communities. We encourage you to share the Annual Report with others who could benefit from knowing about our grant opportunities, or who are in a position to make a gift to NCMCF.

Thank you for your continued interest and support of the North Central Michigan Community Foundation. As you can read in the following pages, your generosity can make a significant difference in local communities throughout Crawford, Ogemaw and Oscoda Counties.

With warmest regards and appreciation,NCMCF Board of Directors

2015: Reflecting on Gifts & Grants

She is particularly proud of the “wonderful fairgrounds and how the community pulled together to buy the land and make the Ogemaw County Fair one of the best in Michigan.” She also notes the West Branch Wine and Art Walk, the Victorian Art Fair and the Ogemaw County Genealogical and Historical Society’s move to the Blumenthal House, which is a local historical land mark.

As a former biology teacher, her involvement in the high school she attended (then West Branch High School) and where her two children attended (Ogemaw Heights High School) and the Educational Support Partnership (ESP) is very important to her. ESP serves as an umbrella for more than 30 scholarship funds that help students from Ogemaw County attend college.

To commemorate West Branch High School, which merged with Rose City High School in 1968 to become Ogemaw Heights High School, she and a former classmate, Ron Schneider, helped create an endowment fund in 2006. With support from past graduates of West Branch High School, the endowment fund exceeded $100,000 in 2015 - quite an impressive accomplishment. The endowment and its annual scholarship awards are a wonderful way for people to remember their alma mater and pay it forward to future generations. To date, 31 scholarships for $500 have been awarded. As the endowment fund continues to grow, forever, future generations will continue to benefit. Visit our website at www.ncmcf.org to get the rest of this story.

The Griffin Family LegacyVery few people can say their family’s roots go back six generations in their community, but Nancy and Bob Griffin can. On both sides of the family, their ancestors’ involvement in the West Branch area dates back to the 1800s. Today they run Griffin Beverage Company together, which first started serving northern Michigan in 1967 and now serves a large expanse of the state.

However, the success of their business has not stopped them from being deeply involved in their hometown. Nancy serves on the Ogemaw County Committee for North Central Michigan Community Foundation and cannot say enough about the generosity of the people in her hometown. “Small communities are wonderful, fantastically supportive. Our community does whatever needs to be done,” said Griffin as she listed off many examples.
