Introducing the workshop facilitators:

Ms Sabina Cleary and Mrs Judith Bennetts have been classroom practitioners of science and chemistry/physics in New Zealand secondary schools. Sabina was Specialist Classroom teacher and Assistant Head of Faculty, supporting the professional learning of teachers at her school, and Judith was Head of Faculty, leading the learning in the science faculty at her school.

Sabina and Judith now work as Secondary Science Curriculum and Learning Facilitators at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. They work alongside secondary school science teachers, as they carry out Teaching as Inquiry (reflective practice), involving guiding teachers through an inquiry cycle. The primary role is to prompt and safely challenge the teachers, and to provide support so that the teachers are able to manage the inquiry as part of their everyday practice. The key aims are to:

• improve experiences and outcomes (learning outcomes, engagement and well being outcomes) for priority learners in the teachers’ class(es)

• develop teachers’ understanding and practice of teaching as inqiury – towards inquiry as stance.

• promote sustainability of inquiry, and develop capability within the science department and school.

They also work with clusters of science teachers developing their classroom pedagogy and programme planning.

Introduction:Several approaches can be taken to be inquiry-based learning in science. Banchi and Bell describe four level of inquiry: 1) Conformation Inquiry, 2) Structured Inquiry, 3) Guided Inquiry and 4) Open Inquiry. Participants of this workshop will briefly look at the advantages and disadvantages of each inquiry approach. They will be introduced to, and carry out, a model of guided inquiry.

Objectives:At the end of this workshop, participants will acquire the skills to demonstrate:• Familiarity with different approaches to inquiry-based learning• Understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of inquiry-based learning• Knowledge of guided inquiry• Knowledge of strategies to support students during a guided inquiry in science• Understanding of how guided inquiry supports the development of science content knowledge,

science process skills and scientific attitudes

strategies/Approaches:This is a hands-on, hearts-on and minds-on workshop on using Inquiry-based Learning in Science. Participants will work in groups and as they are guided through an inquiry looking at the issues of sustainable water and energy use. The inquiry will include researching the issue, formulating a question, and carrying out practical laboratory activities. Participants will present their findings to the group.
