    The CompanyBorri SpA were founded in 1932 and over the decades have gained invaluable experience in maximising efficient power from their

    wide range of UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) and converter products. Borri are one of just a handful of companies able to

    manufacture high efficiency Solar Inverters up to 500kVA. It is this day-to-day practical design and production experience that

    helps Borri produce highly efficient three phase UPS for both industrial and IT applications.

    For good reason the international community has become ECO conscious. From domestic white goods to heavy industrialapplications the squeeze is on to maximise every last watt of energy. It is this new reality that has driven Borri to lead the way

    in the development of ECO UPS technology. Borri are the only company in the world to manufacture three phase UPS from

    10kVA to 800kVA with both IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) rectifiers and inverters. Borris unique efficient double

    conversion technology ensures a clean, uninterruptible source of power able to protect the most critical of loads. With three

    factories in Italy and a UK-based sales and distribution centre, supported by worldwide satellite offices, Borri are well placed to

    offer customers not just efficient products, but also an efficient service.

    Why an ECO UPS?In the post credit crunch era, managers may be focused on rebuilding their companies, regaining market share and of course

    increasing margins. The efficient use of energy could be deemed as less urgent and be set aside until the financial climate hasfurther improved. But, for medium to large organisations, any such delays can have profound effects on the balance sheet! The

    purpose of this brochure is to highlight that even

    a small saving in electrical usage (see graph)

    can generate substantial financial benefits;

    these very real savings are quickly reflected by

    enhanced profitability. In fact, if a company

    currently has an inefficient UPS the cost savings

    of replacing it with a high efficiency ECO UPS

    typically can be recouped within two years.

    A benefit of incorporating IGBT switching is

    that input THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)

    is less than 3%. This falls well inside proposed

    European legislation, thus there being no risk

    of a financial penalty. The combined features of

    the Borri ECO UPS result in low heat, low

    C02, low footprint and, most important of all,

    low fuel bills!

    It is estimated that over one third of direct and indirect energy ( air conditioning units, etc) used

    to power a UPS is wasted because of low efficiency, poor load arrangements and unnecessary

    equipment being attached.

    A double conversion ECO UPS, when compared to traditional six and twelve pulse machines,

    offers a typical efficiency advantage of more than 10%. Further, the ECO UPS remains efficient at low loads: with

    many alternative UPS topologies the efficiency drops in proportion to the load; ie. low load = low efficiency =

    higher running costs.

    Below, we have presented two graphs; these clearly demonstrate the substantial financial benefits of using ECO-

    friendly power products over three and eight years respectively. An ECO 100kVA UPS over a three year term with

    just a 6% efficiency advantage can save the user approximately 32,000; the same machine over eight years cansave a staggering 90,000. Such economies mean the green choice is so much easier to make.

    Actual savings may be dependent upon the accuracy and type of utility meter used and previously used.

    Energy Technology List

    Borri are proud to announce the ECO-UPS range from 250kVA

    6.4MVA is now listed on the Energy Technology List (ETL), part

    of the Governments Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) Scheme.The ECO-UPS range was independently verified in line with the rigorous selection

    criteria and was officially listed on the ETL as of 1st February 2011.

    The ECA scheme provides a tax incentive for businesses wanting to invest in

    technologies which meet published energy saving criteria. The purchase of a Borri

    ECO-UPS System entitles the end user to claim 100% first-year capital

    allowances for the investment against taxable profits of the period of investment

    (including associated delivery and installation costs) Thats a potential saving

    of 27% of the capital expenditure in year one!

    Carbon Trust Loan

    Borri are a registered supplier with the Carbon Trust, by investing

    in an ECO-UPS you could fund the purchase with an Interest Free

    Efficiency Loan, repaying the loan over the same period as the

    savings are realised. Loans of between 3,000 and 100,000 are

    available and can be repaid over a period of up to 4 years.

    Low Input Harmonic Distortion(THDi)

    Borri are the only company in the world offering

    IGBT technology on all their three phase ECO UPS-

    right up to 800kVA

    A Borri UPS reflects less than 3% distortion back to the mains. This lowreflected distortion results in electronic equipment upstream from the

    UPS being much less susceptible to interference (ideal for hospitals).

    Another important consideration is that most European countries are

    looking at imposing penalties on companies that excessively pollute the

    electrical grid. A Borri UPS falls well inside the proposed distortion levels

    that would be subject to a fine.

    IGBT rectifier technology saves unnecessary oversizing of auxiliary

    generator sets, infrastructure cabling and circuit breakers.

    Manufacturers with high input THD machines may offer a partial

    solution by means of a twelve pulse rectifier. This old technologyrequires additional input filters and transformers to try to match

    Borris performance, This, in turn, adds a substantial price and size, and

    a loss of efficiency.

    Note: By adding extra transformers and chokes to create a twelve pulse

    input stage, efficiency will be decreased and the resultant UPS will still

    not meet the overall performance of a Borri ECO product.

    ECO Benefits to Generator Applications

    Stand-by Generator

    As stated earlier, by using an ECO UPS smaller cables and switchgear can be used. The same

    principle is true when using a stand-by diesel generator which, unlike the mains, is not infinite

    in power; thus energy must be extracted in the most efficient way possible. Borri ECO UPS

    generates less than 3% total harmonic distortion. This feature, married to a high input power

    factor (.99pf) has many benefits for both the generator and the environment.

    Smaller Generator Needed with ECO UPS

    Because reflected distortion to the generator is so low a substantially smaller engine and

    alternator can be used. Typically, when calculating the size of a generator to run with a non ECO

    UPS, a factor of 2.5 would be

    applied. For example, a

    standard 100kVA UPS

    would require a

    250kVA generator.

    Longer Generator Life with ECO UPS

    By using a Borri ECO UPS the life of the generator can be extended. A conventional UPS may

    generate 25% to 35% reflected harmonics. This distortion results in the generator alternatorwindings having to run hotter than necessary. With a Borri ECO UPS this problem will never

    occur. A further complication of bad harmonics is that the resulting mains distortion may lead

    to the generator management system (GMS) misinterpreting what is actually happening. This

    often causes hunting (the GMS switches back and forth between mains and generator resulting in

    small breaks) and such a scenario is a real threat to your load.

    Ancillary Generator Benefits with ECO UPS

    The combination of high efficiency, high power factor and low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)

    allows for smaller cables, swi tchgear and fuel storage, another less obvious advantage is that

    the generator will have a smaller footprint, thus any concrete plinth could be reduced in size,

    as could any related security fencing again real benefits to the local environment.

    Friendly Power Factor with ECO UPS

    Another energy-friendly characteristic of the Borri ECO UPS is that it draws its power at almost

    unity power factor (.99pf); ie, the current and voltage are in sync. Note: The larger the lag (power

    factor) between current and voltage the greater the waste of energy. Many conventional UPS

    draw power at a .8pf and are thus 20% less efficient. A poor power factor can lead to many

    disadvantages in generator applications; from higher fuel costs to shorter maintenance intervals.

    Transformerless Technology: The design philosophy behind transformerless technology is exclusively to reduce cost. Like most things in life, You dont get

    something for nothing. By removing the t ransformer you lose some electrical isolation and may expose your load to a wider-range of problems.

    A Transformerless UPS with an IGBT rectifier is more efficient than a conventional SCR six or twelve pulse machine. However, the Borri ECO B9000 & ECOB9600 UPS series incorporates both an IGBT rectifier and inverter making its efficiency equal to, or even better than, most transformerless units. All this is

    achieved whilst still incorporating the all-important protection of a transformer!

    Most UPS installations, for practical purposes of flexibility run at between 55% to 80% of capacity. The efficiency chart below shows that (in this power-

    band) there is no particular efficiency advantage from either transformerless or transformer technology; both fare well. Only when at 100% load does a

    transformerless machine achieve a small gain but this is offset by the efficiency of the Borri system at low load which, in the real world, is where it matters.

    To achieve a transformerless topology, more high power switching devices are required on the output, ironically its these additional switching devices that

    may reduce efficiency.

    Isolation Transformer is Standard on ECO B9000 & ECO B9600 60kVA - 800kVA: When designing the B9000 and B9600 series, Borri took the decision,

    at the point of conception, to include an output transformer, but why? Because the benefits and additional protection were considered to be great and allowed

    for a wider range of applications.

    EMF Protection: A threat to any UPS is back EMF (back electromagnetic force). This energy is created by switching on and off machines connected to the

    output. The Borri transformer will dissipate this energy, protecting the UPS and in consequence your load. Back EMF and high energy spikes are also generated

    by magnetic brakes, often found on high speed drives or robotic applications and larger printers. With most transformerless UPS this rogue energy is passed

    directly across the output stage and is dissipated via an array of semi conductor devices. The life of these devices is finite, the length depending on usage,

    whilst the life of a transformer is almost infinite.

    DC Protection: Having an output transformer offers 100% protection against DC (battery/rectifier voltage) reaching the load in the event of a major

    failure. Should DC reach the load, catastrophic damage is certain.

    Transformerless UPS cannot protect against a DC threat!

    Note to Buyer: If your computer room is subjected to a substantial

    lighting strike, or similar, a transformer-based UPS guarantees no DC toyour load.

    Efficient Scalability: Borris parallel operation has the functionality for

    both redundancy and capacity increase. Up to six 800kVA UPS can be

    combined together to give an extraordinary 4.8MVA of efficient power

    at just 3% THD. Further, Borris DSP digital control protocol acts on both

    active and reactive power, monitoring each output phase. This allows

    efficient load sharing between all modules connected in parallel.

    One of the biggest expenses of UPS ownership is the replacement and maintenance of the batteries.

    The B8000, B9000 and B9600 feature an Accurate Battery Management (ABM) program whereby, following the UI characteristic curve, the charger

    starts at a constant current, automatically selected by the type and quantity of the battery used.

    The ABM system eliminates detrimental excess charging and reduces residual current ripple, one of the main causes of premature battery wear. The ABM

    program also protects against deep discharge cycles which can and do damage individual cells.

    A single battery can cost 135.00 and its not uncommon for a medium size UPS to contain 120 individual blocks. Protecting your batteries is protecting

    your investment.

    The Borri B9000 and B9600 ECO series incorporate automatic temperature compensation which regulates the battery charge voltage under hot and cold

    conditions thereby increasing battery life. By extending the life of the batteries, the environment is benefited.

    Note: Batteries contain heavy duty plastic, acid, lead and are expensive to recycle. The longer the life can be extended the fewer need to be produced and

    subsequently recycled.

    The B8000 ECO series is a transformerless UPS with IGBT input and output technology. The

    combination of Isolated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and digital processing (DSP) enables the ECO

    B8000 series to have an almost negligible effect on the mains supply, reflecting less than 3% harmonic

    distortion.

    When running in normal On-Line mode the B8000 ECO offers an AC/AC efficiency of 95% increasing

    to 98% in DC to AC mode. Achieving a high DC to AC efficiency means that, under mains failconditions, the batteries and your network run for longer. Should green mode be selected. AC to AC

    efficiency increases to approximately 98%.

    The B9000 ECO is the most efficient transformer based uninterruptible power supply available on the

    UPS market. The efficiency of the B9000 is typically 10% to 15% higher than a conventional six or

    twelve pulse UPS, providing massive efficiency and cost savings for the user. See graphs on page 3.

    The B9000 ECO incorporates an IGBT rectifier reflecting less than 3% harmonic distortion back to the

    mains and, as a consequence, has no detrimental effect on other equipment sharing the same supply.

    A further benefit of IGBT technology is that any auxiliary generator can be downsized by as much as

    50%. See page 5.

    The B9600 ECO: Like the B9000 the B9600 includes an isolation transformer, IGBT rectifier and

    IGBT inverter. The combination of these three c rucial technical components makes the B9600 ECO

    UPS the only machine available in the world able to reach 800kVA (single module) with an efficiency

    of 95% and a reflected THD of
