Let me begin by saying thank you to our customers from far and wide, many of you repeat buyers, and some of you young couples just starting out on your journey. Welcome to all of you and thank you for your confi dence in our program and our bulls. The cattle industry is one in which we each work to reach our own individual goals, but also where we all work together to make Canadian beef the best in the world. Cultivating good relationships and mutual respect, as well as standing behind our product will go a long way toward helping each other succeed!

As our annual Bull Sale approaches, we are well into calving. At this point I wish to acknowledge our help: Neels and Gerrit, Allan and Ben, who help run the ranch smoothly from day to day, season to season. I still remain very hands-on with the cattle; my iPhone tells me that today I walked 15 kms before 5:00! Time to call the doctor about these old knees!

As I write this, I refl ect on the path I have taken over the course of my life, and I can say with certainty that becoming a cattleman has been the right choice for me. As I walk through the bull pen I admire their powerful, uniform frames; thick sire prospects with lots of hair and testicle. Performance bulls built into a total package. Bulls with outstanding dams and grand dams. Selected over 45 years for disposition, calving ease and performance, as well as longevity. It’s been worth every minute.

There is a great deal of satisfaction that comes from hearing the favorable testimonials of repeat buyers. It is also gratifying to see Spring Creek bulls and females appearing in the pedigrees of elite herds. Spring Creek Simmentals is a Century Farm; for over 125 years McCarthy cattle have roamed and grazed here. Our family has been very fortunate to call this home. Our son Sean says that he ‘won the lottery of life’; he’s so lucky to be a farm kid from Saskatchewan!

As breeders our work starts many years before your bull of choice is born, layering genetics that will result in ideal females that will produce the kind of bulls that will make a difference for you our customer at year end. Our cowherd has been selected over the years for optimal body type and size, concentrating on udder quality, soundness, fertility, and disposition.

As we look to the future, there is so much to look forward to and be grateful for. We’ve raised a fi ne herd and a fi ne family here on the ranch. Our son Dan, a Professional Engineer, has invented and patented a vertical lift pump jack. His company, IJack Technologies, Inc., is set to open their state-of-the-art 20,000 sq. ft. building north of Moosomin in February. His wife Olga is also an engineer and a photographer. They have two children. Sean has a business degree, a CFA, an MBA in fi nance, and is presently working on a second MBA in computer science, while working full time as a quantitative trading specialist for Enmax in Calgary, and chief data scientist at IJack. Sean’s wife Simina is a partner at Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer LLP. They have one son, Jack. Our daughter Lauren has a commerce degree. She has been the Communications and Social Media Specialist for Trinidad Drilling in Calgary. She is now enjoying selling new builds for Sterling Homes. Charlie Power plays for the Stampeders. And as for my mom, Grandma Frances, also known as ‘GG Grandma’, well, she continues to lead by example around here, having just turned 99 in December, and living in her own house here on the farm.

We are pleased to once again be working with Bohrson Marketing and T Bar C. They provide an invaluable service and we really appreciate their professionalism. Feel free to contact them for any assistance you may need.

IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty”The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. The time your bull spends in the Winter Feeding Program will be included in this warranty. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. We’d like to welcome you to the 2019 edition of the In Pursuit of Perfection sale. This will be our 5th year consigning to this sale and wow what a ride it has been, in that time. From waves in cattle prices to the driest back to back years since the 1800’s. It is a far stretch to say we have all seen a lot in the last few years. The one thing that ceases to amaze me is the persistent behavior we have as a whole to try and better our situations. No matter the adversity we all overcome, and are better for it. I would like to begin with a much appreciate thank you to all the previous buyers and bidders as well as everyone who has shown interest in our sales through the years. It is very humbling, and gives us the motivation to provide a better animal each and every year.

Our Farm is situated 15 minutes west of Moose Jaw and consists of 160 mature cows (70 Angus, 90 simmentals). We are a family farm, and everyone has their own special roles to make it work. Our cow herd is fed completely forage diet, and has never received grain as a supplement. Our cow herd is raised with the vision of having the best feet, udder, and natural fl eshing in mind. We are able to accomplish this feat by culling very hard and using the best sires we can fi nd. Along with this we retain a very prolifi c herd. The cattle are AI\d and/ or exposed for 60 days and anything that is open is shipped in the fall.

We believe this our strongest and most consistent offering we have ever raised. The sire of 9 of our 10 bulls is none other then the powerful U2 Renown bull. He is known for adding a power punch but leaving a female that is desirable. We have a pen full of 1/2 and 3/4 sibs to these bulls, and trust me they are everything you want and more. Our lone Lazy MC Knockout bull may very well be the best one to date.

As time goes by, I get more and more impressed with the ‘McDavid’ progeny. Whether I am in the bred heifer pen or the open heifer pen, it is great to see the consistency. They are broody, have lots of hair, have nice female heads and have extra depth of body and spring of rib. The bulls have hair, performance and correctness. He calves easy, partly attributable to shorter gestations. Here is a son that should continue these traits. His dam came from Rainbow River and has a nice udder. His gestation was 285 days.

He is a twin to MBJ 38F. Their dam was my pick of the heifer calves at the Black Sand Dispersal. She is moderate in size, very correct and has a very nice udder. Her last year’s bull sold to Stellar Farms.

For such a stout bull this guy sure moves freely and stays clean in the front end. 88F’s dam is a smaller framed cow going back to Soo Line Cheif. She does however put a lot into her calve and raises heavy ones every year.
