Without a doubt, the single most important aspect of 2014 was you.Because of your generosity, we had an unprecedented year, raising

$3.7 million to fund educational opportunities and assist in communitybuilding for Bahamians most in need.

Our Way FOrWard

Last year saw the completion of our five-year strategic plan (2015-2019),established in order to most effectivelyserve The Bahamas and its people andmaximize the impact of our programmes.

This new vision requires increasedinvestment across all programmes. To support this increased investment, we plan to raise $13 million over the next five years, a goal which represents a 15% increase in donations each year over historic contribution andfundraising levels.

Because of your support in 2014:

• 99 Lyford Cay Scholars attendeduniversities abroad;

• 109 Lyford Cay Scholars studied at The College of The Bahamas;

• 25 Lyford Cay Scholars achieved the milestone of completing their degrees;

• 144 public school students arepreparing to be the first in their family to go to college;

• 21 charitable organisations providededucational opportunities for commu-nities throughout the Bahama Islands.

In this report, you will hear from FOCUS students, Lyford Cay Scholars and beneficiaries of community initiatives about how your giving made a difference in their lives. On their behalf, a heartfelt thank you!

HEadEr HEadErThroughout the year, FOCUS students areexposed to a variety of out-of-classroomexperiences. This past year began with avisit to the newly renovated LyndenPindling International Airport. Other field trips included salsa dancing, potterymaking and rock climbing at Atlantis andvisiting Ardastra Gardens & Zoo.

Special lessons outside of Math andLanguage Arts included reviewing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens andhearing from guest speakers on anti-bullying as well as engineering, realestate, land surveying and hotelmanagement careers.

The summer projects were impressive to say the least. FOCUS uses a Project-Based Learning curriculum, which catersto our students’ individual learning styles.

Grades 5 and 6 created websites to bring awareness and provide solutions to the challenges surrounding thegarbage dump.

Grade 7 and 8 created a bus route for all FOCUS students to go to and from The College of The Bahamas campusmost efficiently using geographicinformation systems (GIS mapping).

Thanks to you, FOCUS 2014 proved to be a success!

Loretta A. Rogers & Family Since her first visit to Nassau with herparents, Lord and Lady Martonmere, at theage of 8, Loretta Rogers has amassed alifetime of fond memories in The Bahamas.

Speaking nostalgically about her frequentvisits to Nassau while attending boardingschool in Palm Beach and then university inMiami, Loretta notes that her current homein Lyford Cay was once the beach househer family rented as a child. Back then, shesays, there were only about five houses onthe western part of the island.

Loretta’s array of memories range fromgalloping horses from Hobby Hall Racetrackalong Goodman’s Bay Beach to, morerecently, feeding stingrays off the south ofBimini Island. And perhaps, the mostsentimental of these being that she metand became engaged to her late husband,legendary Canadian telecommunicationsmagnate and philanthropist Ted Rogers, in Lyford Cay.

Today, Loretta not only spends a quarter of her time in the place where thesememories were built but she and theRogers family have been at the forefront of giving back to The Bahamas through The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation.

“Ted was very interested and keen on

the Foundations and on education as ameans to better the country,” she shares.“He always believed you should give back.He did well in business and felt some of it should be returned to the things he believed in.”

Beyond their significant financial support,and of equal importance, Loretta hasserved as a Board Director and President of The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundationsince 1981. Loretta took the reins of theorganisation effortlessly, employing ahands-on approach by serving on thecommittee to select new scholarshiprecipients in its early days.

It is this work that gave her deeper insight into the hardships that many

Bahamian students face when seeking post-secondary studies.

“I remember one Scholar who wasparticularly brilliant. She was one of 13 children from a family island, whosefather was a fisherman and had ahousehold income of about $11,000. How could her family educate her? She was able to make something of her life and is a good example that if you work hard and try, it doesn’t matterwhere you came from; you can do it!”

That drive to help talented youngBahamians further their education and meaningfully contribute to thedevelopment of the country, is what ledLoretta and the Rogers family to recentlyannounce an unprecedented gift to theCanadian Foundation of CAD$3.6 million.

The largest gift in the historyof both Foundations, thefunds will increase the family’scurrent scholarshipendowment to now fund eight(8) scholarships valued at$25,000 each, per year withpreference given to firstgeneration college studentspursuing undergraduatestudies in Canada.

“In today’s world, if you wantto get ahead, be a leader andcontribute to The Bahamas,you need a higher education,”she says. “Give people aneducation and they can reallycontribute to the society. Themore we help, the more theycan help in turn.”

The first of the new scholarships will bedisbursed in the 2015/2016 academic year.

In 2014, Loretta retired as President of The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation, citing the Foundation’s need for freshleadership. She remains as a Board Director and continues to be activelyinvolved with the Foundations’ work.

We salute Loretta and the Rogers family–Lisa, Edward, Melinda and Martha andremember Ted’s legacy. Thank you for yourleadership, commitment, service, example,and for your belief in us. It is because ofdonors like you that we, as a caringcommunity, are able to do our part to helpBahamian students who are most in needto secure better opportunities and a betterfuture for all.

I was one of the first scholarship recipientsof the Foundations in the early 1980s. Thatscholarship became my “springboard” torealising my dream career in Fine Arts andInterior Design.

Upon completion of my BFA degree, Ireturned to Nassau and was employed atChambers House and Garden in Lyford Cayas a Senior Designer and Assistant GalleryDirector. It was during this time that I metMrs. Loretta Rogers. The rest is history.

Today some 25 years later, Mrs. Rogers has become more than a client – she is apersonal friend and mentor. Her guidanceand kindness has taught me to stay

focused and to pursue my goals. She hasunknowingly kindled and stoked myexcitement for my career in Interior Design.

Our friendship through the years is one that I hold near and dear to my heart and one that I will always cherish.

As I reflect, I realise the scholarship was not only an investment in me, but also aninvestment in The Bahamas. One does notinvest in something they do not believe in.Mrs. Rogers believed in The Bahamas thenand still does today.

This country is blessed to have such a loyal and patriotic friend in Loretta Rogers. A heartfelt thank you!
