Designed for easy maintenance

The sampling compartment is extremely spacious (25cm wide by 25cm deep) allowingeasy access when you need to change burnerheads or nebulizers. The burner system uses anew innovative quick-lock design (Figure 1) thatallows the complete burner assembly to simplyglide and lock into place. All connections are madeautomatically, so tedious manual disconnectionof gas lines to remove the burner assembly iseliminated. There are no fittings to tighten orconnections to make and most importantly, notools are required.

No down time

The AAnalyst 400 makes troubleshooting andrepair easy. All electronics are located in a single,user-replaceable module. The operator can just slide the module out from the front of theinstrument and replace it with a new one (Figure 2).Instrument operators can replace most partsquickly and easily without a service visit. Inaddition, integrated diagnostics can be used toquickly help troubleshoot the system. Rugged design for real-worldapplications

Whether your AA is in a state-of-the-art laboratoryor a remote mining location, the AAnalyst 400ensures dependable operation. The entireoptical system in the AAnalyst 400 is sealed in a protective housing to shield it from corrosiveenvironments. The optical system can also bepurged to ensure optimum performance inextremely corrosive or dirty environments.

The PerkinElmer burner system is equally userfriendly. The corrosion-resistant solid titaniumburner head installs easily in the burner chamber.A fail-safe mechanism ensures that the burnerhead is always properly restrained without theneed for hold-down cables. No tools are requiredto assemble or disassemble the burner system forroutine maintenance. For convenience, a largecorrosion-resistant tray that can accommodate avariety of sample vessels is included. The tray is detachable and mounts quickly and easily onthe front of the instrument.

Worry-free sampling

An inert polymer spray chamberprovides superior performance for the analysis of corrosive and high-solids samples. The spray chamber is manufactured from a high-strengthcomposite, which eliminates the need forpressure-relief devices.

The high-precision nebulizer maximizes stabilityand sensitivity, even for the toughest matrices(Figure 3). The nebulizer is adjustable so a widevariety of sample matrices— aqueous or organic, acids or bases, diluted or concentrated—can beanalyzed under optimum conditions. Whateveryour application, the AAnalyst 400 provides trouble-free operation.

Safety first

The entire instrument is not only easy to use andmaintain, it also includes safety features normallyfound only on top-of-the-line AAs. The fullyautomatic gas box is standard on every system, providing the highest level of safety available on any flame AA. The system automaticallyrecognizes which burner head is installed andadjusts the gas settings correctly for the type of flame used, providing worry-free and safe operation.

The AAnalyst 400 continuously monitors criticalcomponents, including burner, flame ignition, gas pressure, drain status, and many others. Ifany system check indicates an unsafe operatingcondition, the flame is automatically extinguished. When nitrous oxide is used, the gas box willautomatically light the flame under air-acetyleneconditions and properly switch to nitrous oxideand adjust the gas flows to the proper levels forsafe operation.

Combining double-beam optics with a solid-state detectorimproves performance

The AAnalyst 400 features the first true double-beam Echelle optical system used in an AA. True double-beam systems compensate forchanges that may occur in lamp intensity duringan analysis. The system ensures a more stablebaseline and improved performance—precisionand detection limits—plus simpler operation.Compared to pseudo double-beam systemsoffered in other systems, which move an optic or the burner head, the AAnalyst 400’s truedouble-beam system compensates for signal driftmany times per second rather than only oncebetween each sample.

At the heart of the high-performance opticalsystem is a unique solid-state detector designedto provide high-quantum efficiency in the UVregion. When combined with the high lightthroughput of the Echelle optical system, evendifficult elements can be measured with excellentsignal-to-noise ratios. Plus, using a solid-statedetector means that no expensive photomultipliertubes will ever have to be replaced, once againlowering the cost of ownership.

Automatic lamp selection andalignment ensure proper installation

The systems include a four-lamp mount withbuilt-in power supplies for both hollow cathodeand electrodeless discharge lamps (EDLs) (Figure 4).EDLs provide much higher light output andlonger lifetime when compared to conventionalhollow cathode lamps. The patented PerkinElmercableless LuminaTM lamps ensure proper connection.Just slide them in—you can’t connect themincorrectly. The Lumina lamps are then recognizedby the AAnalyst 400 and the wavelength, slitand lamp parameters are automatically set andthe lamps aligned.
