Research group profile

The research group founded in 2008, was created based on common concerns in wood processing industry, ie development of new products and innovative manufacturing technologies and also the use of wood waste as renewable energy. Based on these directions of research, the group has developed so far a number of research projects won by competition both nationally and internationally (CNCSIS, CEEX Partnerships, FP7). The 15 teachers, three doctoral supervisors and six PhD students use a state of the art research infrastructure which worth of over € 1 million, which was acquired in some important projects (CEEX, PRO-DD). Ecological plywood

1, 3, 5 – beech veneer ; 2, 4 – textile insert

Characteristics: It is a material easy to be moulded in repeated pressings, is

very elastic and able to achieve spatial forms; It is reinforced with two layers of fabric of natural fibers,

which increase the elasticity and the strength of plywood produced according to the invention;

Has a low power consumption due to cold pressing of plywood;

Thermal insulation composites with low, medium and high density designed for building purpose and their method of producing. Patent Application no. A 2011 01059/24.10.2011.

Composite panel

The thermal insulation composite boards with a low, medium and high density according to the invention, are made of reinforcing elements as wood chips in the range of 2-30mm in length and the width in the range of 0.4 -10mm, and natural textile fibers in the form of waste recyclable wool with the lengths in the range of 5-25mm, in equal quantities, and matrix of mineral binders as cement, gypsum, clay, acrylic or water-soluble organic lake. The composite boards have a low cost because they are made of production waste, are achieved with a low energy consumption and they do not pollute the environment.

Completed and ongoing research projects at national and international level

1. BIOCOMPTEX Project – (BIO)DEGRADABLE COMPOSITES WITH TEXTILE INSERTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ECOLOGICA PRODUCTS, Project no.72-200/2008. The main objective was to increase the competitiveness of research and development, through a partnership between independent entities of research and development, in order to design, develop and implement advanced and innovative biodegradable products and ecological and economical technologies. The secundary objectives of the project were as follows: - to develop innovative products and technologies impacting the quality of life and environment, by their ecological and biodegradable characteristics. - capitalization of small sized biomaterials (wood fibers) and waste textiles. - to create the frame of the collaboration between the partners in the project, between the research and development units, for one of the priority areas of research, namely materials, processes and innovative products. - to propose innovative and competitive products on the international market, designed to increase the quality of life by applying technologies for recycling of small biomaterials (wood) and some textile waste. Two types of materials were proposed: a type of textile-reinforced laminated products, replacing the classic structure of plywood and materials made of particles of wood chips and textile waste, having the role of thermal and sound insulation system.

CEEX Project – LABORATORY OF TESTING THE PROCESSING ACCURACY IN WOOD INDUSTRY – Project No. 168/2006 The main objectives of the project were accomplished by defining and developing methods for measuring the dimensional, shape and position accuracy and to verify the surface quality for panels, wooden products and wooden based products used in furniture and buildings, according to European Directive 89/106/EEC for accreditation purpose. The final result of the project was achieved by specialized services offered to the companies in Romania: determination of the linear dimensions and of the straightness of the edges, determination of the angle between the sides and the radius contour, determination of depth and diameter of the holes, the measurement of flatness, parallelism sides, groove and rebate, roughness for plane and profiled surfaces. Another measurable result of this project was completed in three doctoral theses, where one of the objectives was to determine the surface roughness for plane and profiled surfaces machined by milling and sanding for species as locust, birch and pear wood. Contract value ROL 793.000. Research team: Prof.dr.eng. Ivan Cismaru, Prof.dr.eng. Maria Cismaru, Assoc.dr.eng. Luminiţa Brenci, Assoc.dr.eng. Camelia Coşereanu, Prof.dr.eng. 3. CEEX Project – LABORATORY OF TESTING – RESEARCH THE FURNITURE QUALITY AND CERTIFICATION OF THE CONFORMITY OF THE WOODEN PRODUCTS, ALIGNED TO THE EUROPEAN NORMS – Project no.. 195/2006. The main objectives of the project have resulted in the definition, development and accreditation of methods for measuring the physical and mechanical properties of wood and wood-based panels. The research results have materialized through the following specialized services to the companies in Romania: • solid wood - compression testing parallel to grain, static bending test, determining the Brinell hardness; • for wood-based boards – bending strength and flexural modulus, tensile testing, tensile testing perpendicular to the faces, screws withdrawing and density determination. Contract value ROL 795,000. Research team: Prof.dr.eng. Virgil Grecu, Prof.dr.eng. Maria Cismaru, Lecturer dr.eng. Adriana Fotin, Lecturer dr.eng. Mihaela Porojan, Assoc.dr.eng. Luminiţa Brenci, Assoc.dr.eng. Camelia Coşereanu, Lecturer dr.eng. Emilia Salcă Project coordinator: Prof.dr.eng. Virgil GRECU, [email protected] Research topics

1. Research on composite panels made of wood waste from production The research aims to patent some structures obtained from sawdust panels, ABS scrap from banding operation, with applications in building and interior design, and for soundproofing panels. In this experimental research the strength, thermal and sound insulation capacity of the panels will be tested.

Camelia COSEREANU [email protected] 2. Determination of the quality of the plane and profiled wood surfaces The subject developed by the research group aims to study and analyze the quality of the plane and profiled surfaces for wood and wood-based products. The experimental values obtained when measuring the surface roughness of the wood, have contributed to define the optimal processing parameters for different wood species, leading to a significant improvement of the surface quality of wood and wood-based panels as well as reducing of electric power consumption. The research topic has resulted in scientific papers, which have been published in ISI Proceedings and journals indexed in the international databases. Research team: Prof.dr.eng. Ivan Cismaru, Assoc.dr.eng. Luminiţa Brenci, Lecturer dr.eng. Adriana Fotin, Assoc.dr.eng. Camelia Coşereanu, Prof.dr.eng. Mihai Ispas Coordinator: Prof.dr.eng. Ivan Cismaru [email protected] 3. Use of biomass and renewable resources for solid fuel production The research aims to study the possibility of using wood biomass obtained from both forestry and processing of logs, lumber and other products obtained in wood industry. Within the general concept of biomass, the research focused on briquetting the production wood waste and on the determination of briquettes characteristics, in terms of European norms in the field. In this respect new properties were determined, as the briquettes sales index is, which makes possible the quality quantification against the compaction coefficient of the briquettes. These elements had as result the publications in ISI and BDI journals, and submitting two patent proposals to OSIM body. In the same field of biomass, research on the determination of calorific power of wood biomass have been conducted, resulted in other publications and patents. Research team: Prof.dr.eng.
