Leaders in recycling technology

Boasting some of the UK’s most modern and innovative waste processing technology

Our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Barking (Essex) is permitted by the Environment Agency to receive over 500,000 tonnes per annum and accept virtually all types of commercial and municipal wastes.

We offer easy access and can accommodate most vehicle types and sizes. We also operate 24/7 365 days a year meaning our customers can deliver their waste at a time which suits them.

In addition to the above there are two wharfs at the facility that can accommodate 100 metre vessels to provide a more sustainable method of transporting wastes from site to their ultimate destination.

Customer turnaround times are kept to a minimum through the provision of self-service, fully-automated, Avery-calibrated scales. The use of intuitive and interactive software also enables drivers to book themselves in using touch-screen terminals accessible from their cab. The system allows drivers to declare what material they are delivering and also takes digital images of the load and vehicle number plate to ensure that information is entered correctly.

The digitisation and removal of paperwork further strengthens the audit trail and enables information to be automatically transferred into our electronic reporting process. This provides a completed waste transfer note and the capability for sophisticated waste reporting.

Continued investment in our MRF means we boast some of the UK’s most modern and innovative waste processing technology.

Our Research and Development team is continually reviewing our processes and equipment in order to increase the volume and types of materials that we can recover and to optimise quality. We maintain close relationships with industry bodies such as the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) to ensure we stay at the forefront of recycling technology.

Sustainability

We do not regard the material we manage as waste but as a valuable secondary resource

95%of wasterecycled

Sustainability is also ingrained into our own operations. We regularly benchmark and monitor our energy usage and calculate the equivalent CO2 emissions in order to explore and implement new initiatives to improve the efficiency of our recycling facilities and fleet.

This innovation has included the use of GPS tracking to optimise vehicle route planning and the use of two wharfs to move material by water. Each load moved by ship saves somewhere in the region of 140 lorry journeys, reducing emissions and congestion.

Disposal

By managing these resources in a more sustainable manner we are able to reduce our environmental impact and preserve the earth’s limited natural resources.

Our zero-to-landfill commitment means that we now recycle approximately 95% of the material that we manage. Once recovered and sorted, materials including plastic, metal, glass, paper, card are sent to our partners for further processing prior to being used in the manufacture of new products. The increased use of these secondary resources enables the creation of more sustainable supply chains and supports the development of the circular economy.

Any of the residual waste that cannot be recycled is used in the production of sustainable alternative fuels. These Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) and Refuse Derived Fuels (RDF) are used to offset fossil fuels in energy intensive industries such as cement manufacture or in Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities.

High-quality secondary resources

Our MRF employs a number of mechanical and manual processes to segregate waste into individual material streams

These streams are then either processed further on-site or transported to one of our specialist re-processors where they are prepared for use as secondary resources in manufacturing and sustainable supply chains.

MRF & Waste Transfer Station The performance of our MRF means that we are often able to recover additional materials from waste that has already been processed or originates from transfer stations. This helps our waste management and local authority customer to improve the service they give to their customers or residents, whilst also maximising environmental and commercial value of the waste, for which they are responsible for ensuring that 100% of waste is diverted from landfill.

Our facilities are capable of accepting virtually all commercial, municipal and hazardous wastes including:

PlasticsThe recyclability of plastic is one of its key strengths and delivers a number of financial and environmental benefits. Incorporating recycled polymers into new products displaces virgin plastics and saves an average of two tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of plastic recycled.

We recycle a range of plastics including bottles, bags, films, trays, window frames, piping and other bulky, rigid materials. These are processed to remove other materials and sorted into various types before being

transported to re-processors, who further treat them ready for use in the manufacture of new products.

MetalsThe case for recycling materials is pretty compelling. For example, every tonne of recycled steel saves 1.5 tonnes of iron ore and 0.5 tonnes of coal, as well as 40% of the water and 75% of the energy needed to make it from virgin materials.

We recycle a range of ferrous metals such as food cans and non-ferrous metals including drink cans and materials produced by the construction industry, such as aluminium, copper, lead and zinc. Virtually all the metal we recycle is used to manufacture new high-quality products.

Paper/Cardboard Paper and cardboard generally represent the largest fraction of commercial waste and recycling them reduces air pollution and saves trees.

Despite the fact that paper is 100% recyclable a significant amount ends up in either landfill or energy from waste facilities. Our MRF mechanically and manually segregates and sorts mixed material into a range of grades including; cardboard, white/mixed paper, newspaper and pamphlets. These are then baled for transportation to mills where it is used in new paper and packaging products.

Materials we recycle

AggregatesAggregate products such as concrete and stone products are 100% recyclable and by recycling them we can protect natural resources and eliminate needless disposal costs.

Materials can be crushed, recycled and graded for use in a wide range of applications such as road construction and land reclamation. The demand for secondary sources of aggregates has doubled in the last 20 years with many public projects now requiring a set percentage of recycled aggregates. Construction companies that want to achieve the BREEAM standards for environmental performance are also encouraged to use recycled materials.

PlasterboardIt is estimated that 300,000 tonnes of waste plasterboard a year is generated from the construction sector. This material, which is banned from landfill, can be reused time and again without altering its fundamental properties. This makes it a perfect replacement for virgin.

Our facility is designed to service a wide range of end users including plasterboard distributors, dry lining contractors, waste management companies, councils and construction companies. We also accept industrial Gypsum wastes including filter media and industrial by-products. We guarantee to recycle 100% of the waste plasterboard we receive.

High-quality alternative fuels

We have one of the UK’s most sophisticated facilities for processing and manufacturing RDF and SRF

We have invested heavily in the latest technologies to develop one of the UK’s most sophisticated facilities for processing and manufacturing RDF and SRF. These facilities enable us to recover sustainable energy from the 5% of waste we are unable to recycle and offer a zero waste to landfill service to our customers.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)RDF is the bi-product from commercial, industrial and construction waste which has been processed to remove recyclable materials. It has a low moisture content and high calorific value. This material is shredded, baled and transported to energy from waste facilities where it is used to offset traditional fossil fuels in the production of energy. Using greenhouse gas conversion data from Defra we calculate that every tonne of RDF saves 500kg of CO2 compared to landfill.

Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is used by energy intensive industries, such as cement manufacturers, to offset their use of traditional fossil fuels. Produced from non-hazardous residual waste, SRF is a dry flock-like material which can be consistently manufactured to users’ exact specification including pre-defined levels of moisture content, calorific value and chlorine. Our system is fully compliant with all legal requirements (EA, TFS, Financial Bonds, Insurance).

Transforming waste to energy

Site clearance services

Providing a range of one-off site clearance and waste management services

It is not uncommon for both commercial and residential sites to require ad-hoc waste removal services. These may be as a result of unforeseen circumstances and require the services of our emergency site clearance team. Alternatively, it may be a planned service which takes place when a business relocates or at the end of a tenancy.

Fly tipping and illegal waste sites can be harmful to the environment and have a significant impact on local communities. McGrath provides a range of services to private companies, local authorities and national organisations tasked with clearing them up.

Our experienced team organises the appropriate containment and transportation of waste to recycling facilities, where we recycle as much material as possible. Any waste that cannot be recycled is used as fuel in the production of sustainable energy. Any hazardous waste can also be safely removed and managed by our specialist team.
