Environmental Express® Organic Standards

Extend the shelf life of your standards with split volumes – Each standard is measured gravimetrically and verified using GC, GC/MS, LC and/or Wet Chemistry where applicable

– All concentrations are corrected for purity

– Quality systems are audited and registered to ISO 9001:2000

Many 1-mL volume standards can be supplied in two easy-to-use ampules, each containing 0.6 mL of solution. Dividing your standard into two ampules may extend the shelf life of your standard by allowing you to use only the amount of standard you need, when you need it.

Regardless of volume, each ampule is labeled with the description, catalog number, solvent, lot number and expiration date, and a space for you to record the date you open your ampule, as well as storage specifications. A duplicate self-adhesive label is also attached to affix to your storage container, should you store any unused solution.

Custom Solutions are Mixed to Exact Specifications

A Certificate of Analysis is provided with each standard and shows:

– Catalog number

– Lot number and Expiration date

– Storage requirements

– Solvent

– Compounds identified by name as well as universal CAS #

– Percent purity, lot # of individual compounds, gravimetric concentration in mg/L, and analyte concentration (gravi-metric concentration corrected for purity)

Environmental Express® Color-Coded Surrogates

Prevent costly mistakes in your lab – Know at a glance whether samples have been pH adjusted—the base-neutral solutions will turn a yellow color and acid solutions red

– Ideal for semi-volatile extractions such as EPA Method 3500C

– Works with solid samples by tinting the sodium sulfate used in the extraction

– Non-extractable color indicator will not affect results

– Methanol-based solutions are supplied in a 25-mL screw-top vial; store in refrigerator

– Supplied with Certificate of Analysis and MSDS

– Get higher quality data by cleaning up samples with the fines-free silica gel packing

– Purify samples prior to chromatographic analysis

– Cartridges available to suit your needs

C8 Cartridges contain moderately hydrophobic and nonpolar sorbent to extract extremely nonpolar compounds. This phase is more selective than Clean-Prep C18 for big com-pounds such as PAH, vitamin D, and oils as well as greasy compounds.

C18-Endcapped (17%) Cartridges contain a strongly hydrophobic and nonpolar sorbent to extract acidic, neutral and basic compounds from aqueous solutions, various organic compounds from water, and drugs and metabolites from physiological fluids.

Florisil® (PR Grade) Cartridges contain a polar sorbent (MgO3Si) presenting a basic character to extract nonpolar to moderately polar compounds from nonpolar solvents. The magnesium ion provides retention of chlorinated pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), and polysaccharides.

Tosic Acid (SCX) Cartridges contain a strong cation exchanger sorbent positively charged under all conditions for extraction of basic molecules (pKa 7 to 10).

Activated Carbon Cartridges are packed with pure graphitized carbon particles. This phase has been optimized for absorption of pigments in food and small organic residues in water.

HLB Cartridges are made of a wettable copolymer presenting a hydrophobic-lipophilic balance (HLB), permitting a strong retention for neutral, acidic and basic compounds and a high stability in organic solvents.

Soil-Cell®/HotBlock® Procedure for Method 3546:These steps should only be used as a guide. All QC samples, limitations, interferences, and reagent specifications are addressed in depth in EPA Method 3546. Safety concerns are also part of the full method.

1. When practical, air dry the sample at room temperature for 48 hours in a glass tray or on hexane-rinsed aluminum foil. Alternatively, mix the sample with an equal volume of anhydrous sodium sulfate or diatomaceous earth until a free-flowing powder is obtained.

2. A percent dry weight should be performed on a separate aliquot of sample for the percent dry weight calculation at the end of the analysis.

3. Weigh 10 to 30 g of sample into the Soil Extraction Cell. May vary depending on individual laboratory needs.

4. Add the surrogates and/or spikes listed in the determinative method to each appropriate sample.

5. Add approximately 30 mL of solvent. (This method was validated using methylene chloride. Other solvents may be used but must be validated by the individual laboratory).

6. Place the stainless steel inner lid with the O-ring in the Soil Extraction Cell.

7. Hand-tighten the threaded outer cap onto the Soil Extraction Cell.

8. Heat the HotBlock unit to 130ºC. This will yield an internal solvent temperature of 100 to 115ºC, which is recommended by EPA Method 3546.

9. Put the Soil Extraction Cells into the HotBlock unit and heat for 30 minutes at a block temperature of 130ºC. This will give samples 10 to 20 minutes at the appropriate temperature for extraction, which is recommended by EPA Method 3546.

10. Remove the cells and allow them to cool to room temperature.

11. Unscrew the threaded outer cap and remove. Take care in doing this step, as pressure will develop in the Soil Extraction Cells during the heating process.

12. Take out the stainless steel inner lid and rinse with appropriate solvent, taking care to collect this rinsate in the cell.

13. Proceed with filtering and rinsing, collecting all filtrates. A Büchner funnel with vacuum is recommended, but any appropriate laboratory filtration device may be used.

The extract is now ready for concentration, cleanup, and analysis.

Soxhlet Extraction / SPE Extraction

Soxhlet Extraction Thimbles

Seamless, high-purity filters – Cellulose thimbles are suitable for most applications where soils or other solids are solvent extracted

– Borosilicate glass thimbles may be helpful for high-temperature applications to 500°C or where extremely low background levels are required

– Quartz fiber thimbles withstand temperatures to 1000°C and are ideal for analysis of hot and acidic gases and trace metals

3M® Empore™ Extraction Disks

for Organics in Drinking Water and Wastewater

Provide excellent flow rate and high sample capacity – Large surface area for sorbent/sample contact

– Available for reversed phase, mixed phase, and ion-exchange extractions

Solid phase extraction is currently approved by the US EPA for many organic analytes and is recognized as an alternative test method for many more. Solid phase extraction of large water samples is best accomplished by use of 47 mm or 90 mm disks. For a complete list of procedures, visit our website at www.environmentalexpress.com.
