HISTORY:
Tourism began in the Maldives in 1972. A United Nations mission on development which visited the
Maldives Islands in the 1960s did not recommend tourism, claiming that the islands were not
suitable. Ever since the launch of the first resort in Maldives in 1972, however, tourism in Maldives
has flourished. The arrival of the first tourist group is estimated to have occurred in February
1972. The group landed at Malé, the capital city of the Maldives, and spent 12 days in the country
Maldives. Tourism in Maldives started with just two resorts with a capacity of about 280 beds
in Kurumba Village and Bandos Island Resort. Kurumba island resort is the first resort which was
opened in Maldives then Bandos island resort was opened. At present, there are over 105 resorts
located in the different atolls constituting the Republic of Maldives. Over the past few decades, the
number of tourists in Maldives has risen continuously. In 2009, local island guesthouses started
popping up in the Maldives. This was thanks to a change in regulations that began to officially
allow tourists to stay among the local population,
rather than just on privately owned resort islands. Today,
more than 800,000 tourists visit the Maldives each year.
Former President HE Ibrahim Nasir,
KCMG introduced tourism in Maldives.
NATURAL BEAUTY OF MALDIVES:
Maldives is very famous for its natural beauty which includes the blue ocean and white beaches, accompanied by clean air and pleasant temperatures. The climate of the Maldives is ideal for visitors to get engaged in water sports such as swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water-skiing. windsurfing and
kite boarding.
Due to its extraordinary underwater scenery and clean water, Maldives is ranked
among the best recreational diving destinations of the world.[1] It was also report-
ed to be the world's top honeymoon destination, according to a global survey
by Agoda.com.
OVERVIEW OF A TROPICAL RESORT:
A tourist resort in the Maldives consists of an exclusive hotel on its own island, with its population entirely based on tourists and work force, with no local people or
houses.
These islands developed for tourism are approximately 800 by
200 meters in size and are composed of sand and coral to a
maximum height of about 2 meters above the sea. In addition
to its beach encircling the island, each island has its own
"house reef" which serves as a coral garden and natural
aquarium for scuba divers and snorkelers. The shallow water
enclosed by the house reef also serves as a large natural
swimming pool and protects swimmers from the ocean waves
and strong tidal currents outside the house reef.
The buildings on a typical resort includes rooms and suites
reserved for use by its guests, restaurants, coffee
shops, shops, lounges, bars, discos and diving schools.
A portion of the island also contains staff lodgings and
support services such as catering, power generators, laundry,
and a sewage plant. On-island shops offer a wide range of
products, such as souvenirs and artifacts. Most resorts offer a
wide variety of activities such as aerobics, volleyball and table
tennis.
ECO - TOURISM IN MALDIVES:
Some promotion of ecotourism is practiced in the Maldives, with resorts emphasizing recycling of heat that is wasted in producing electricity and stricter policies of waste disposal.[3] Furthermore, the government aims to conserve the natural beauty of the islands before they are being altered into resorts by enforcing laws such as prohibition of catching turtles and reduction in the damages caused to
the coral reefs.
Nevertheless, the Maldives have frequently come under criticism for their lack of protection of the local shark populations, which have sharply decreased after being hunted extensively for decades. In some areas of the island, sharks have entirely disappeared. Sharks are hunted primarily for their fins. Shark fins are exported from the Maldives to other countries in Asia, where they are regarded as a delicacy. The fins are amputated from the live animals, which are
then thrown back alive into the sea.
Although laws exist that prohibit this practice in the Maldives, these
laws are not respected or enforced by the local authorities.[4]
In 2001, a local environmental organization called Seamarc/Marine
savers (known onsite as Reefscapers), has set up an ambitious
program of reimplantation of coral in damaged areas, on the basis of
resort sponsorship.[5] Many thousand of tourist-sponsored
"coral frames" have been transplanted with success in many resort
reefs like Kuda Hurra and Landaa Giraavaru, and are under close
survey by marine scientists ; they constitute a refuge for thousand of
tropical species, and participate in the preservation and recovery of
these fragile ecosystems.
MALDIVES LOCAL TOURISM:
‘Real Maldives’
Beyond the political rhetoric, a growing number of specialist operators have emerged trying to cater to the mid-market demand from tourists looking to experience the ‘real Maldives’ a side of the country often unseen due to the prevalence of the
lucrative ‘one island, one resort model’.
One such group is Secret Paradise, which this year began offering tourists special packages in North Male’ Atoll and South Male’ Atoll aiming to combine the traditional tourist staples of sunbathing, water sports and diving with authentic Maldives experiences like cooking and eating with local
families, or assisting at island schools.
Ruth Franklin, a senior UK business figure who helped
develop Secret Paradise with a local partner, said that aside
from providing a more authentic travel experience, a key
selling point for the business was to provide more affordable
holidays for tourists concerned the Maldives was out of their
price range.
“To many travelers, ‘budget’ means a room for US$20 or less a night
in many Asian destinations. In the Maldives, budget should be
interpreted in relation to the cost of a night on a resort for bed and
breakfast. Guesthouses on average start at US$50 verses the
cheapest resort at US$250,”
- Ruth Franklin -
Our packages are designed to take above and below into account so
that travelers have the option to spend tropical adventurous and
exploration on the ideal islands on their budget. Compared to the
country’s resort and even safari boat industries, the niche status of
guesthouse tourism did grant the segment a unique appeal in the
region.
Independent travel will never be in our opinion as it is in Thailand for
example and quite frankly We wouldn’t want it to be. Our belief is that
local islands should have a set number of tourist beds available that is
governed by the Tourism Ministry, “Whilst we think it is right to open
up the island to tourists to allow travelers to experience local customs
and traditions and to help support local economy, We would not want
to see islands inundated with travelers to the point that the best of the
Maldives customs and traditions disappear.
We believe that wider success for the guesthouse industry could
eventually lead to growing pressure to amend laws relating to alcohol
and allowing women to wear bikinis on local beaches as part of a
potential trade off for greater economic viability of mid-market
tourism.
Whilst our belief is that alcohol will not and should not be available on
local islands there is definitely already a keen interest by guesthouse
owners to provide private beach areas for tourists
We are not in support of this as we think those guests who stay on a
local island should do so to also experience culture and tradition and
as ‘guests’ should respect a country’s law and regulations.
CRUISING IN MALDIVES:
Cruising in Maldives is a fantastic way of exploring the country and its
islands. There are a number of cruise ships which takes travelers and
tourists for a cruise around the country and its numerous atolls.
Cruises to Maldives are filled with fun, adventure and excitement. The
best way to pay a visit to the coral islands, check out their sandy and
sunny beaches and marvel at the marine life of the blue sea is by tak-
ing a cruise to the Maldives.
There are numerous cruise boats or cruise liners that organizes cruise
to Maldives. Some of the most common and popular cruise vessels that
are available include Gahaa, Gulfaam, Hamathi, Koimala, Sea Coral,
Sea Farer, Kiris, Handhu, Cat fish, Triton Diving Cruiser, MV Carina,
MS Ensis Bounty and Wattaru. One can either go for a luxury cruise
or an adventure cruise to this exotic country.
The cruises are worth embarking upon. One can go for numerous wa-
ter sports on these cruises. Snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing are
some of the popular activities that one can go for on these cruises. Be-
sides, a large number of on board activities are also organized on these
cruise. The cruise ships usually have a card room or a games room,
where the cruisers can play chess or carom. The crew of the ships
makes sure that your journey is a comfortable and enjoyable one. The
food offered in the cruises is extremely tasty and delicious. The guests
are served traditional as well as continental food.
The cruise boats are equipped with all the amenities and features
that make the journey a comfortable one. The cruise boats can ac-
commodate around 8 to 12 passengers. Some of the bigger boats
like the Handhu can accommodate upto 15 passengers at one point
of time. They are spacious and have cozy and comfortable rooms,
equipped with modern amenities like television, coffee makers, hair
dryers, mini bars, in room safe and telephone facilities. The rooms
are all air-conditioned and most of the rooms have private balconies
also.
The cruise boats also have sundecks, swimming pools, dining rooms
and bars and lounges. The cruise vessels also have a shops and
boutiques. Many luxury cruise boats also have games rooms where
the children and the adults can play different types of games.
Luxury and adventure cruises to Maldives are extremely popular.
There are many cruise lines, which have cruise packages that one
can avail of. These cruise packages are extremely economical and
lucrative. Most of the cruise are centered around the central atoll as
the number of visitors are higher in this area.
SURFING IN MALDIVES:
Maldives is a fairly new and emerging destination for surfers. The surf season coincides with the
south-west monsoon and runs from mid February to November when the best swells are generated by
winter low pressure systems in the southern Indian Ocean. March and April also provide good surfing
and have the best weather. The water is warm enough to swim without a wetsuit, though a light suit is
a good idea, for protection from the sun and coral. Booties are essential for picking your way over
exposed coral reefs, and a helmet is recommended.
Surfing in the Maldives provides you with two options; either staying in a resort or booking a
live aboard surfing vacation on a charter cruiser (Safari boat). Resorts provide boats (Dhonis) to
transport surfers out beyond the breaks between two to three times per day for two hour periods
whereas charters offer surfers the chance to surf the reefs for longer periods.
Moreover, you can only access the spot by boat. Small boats or 'dhonis' are used to load the
surfboards onto and position offshore at the rear of the breaks. Sultans is a popular destination for
surfers in the North Male' Atoll's eastern reef because it
provides consistent waves which never close out.
Diving in the Maldives:
The Maldives has become one of the world’s premier scuba diving destinations, because of the abundance of amazing white sand beaches, coral reefs, clear warm waters, many scuba diving sites and
rich marine life.
Most holiday resorts in the Maldives have a scuba diving facility and there are a number of live aboard operators offering scuba diving cruise holidays that take guests to many dive sites all over the Maldives. Many scuba divers are keen to dive in the Maldives because of the presence of whale sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, reef sharks, hammerhead
sharks and moray eels, as well as many smaller fish and coral species.
In the 2004 tsunami, the Maldives were severely damaged and much of
the coral was bleached. Thankfully, the coral reefs have made an
excellent recovery and have almost returned to their
pre-tsunami condition.
Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri
