For years EdTech has provided sup-port for faculty who use video re-cordingof their lessons,specifically

what is known as “lecture capture”, intheirteaching.Twoplatformshavebeenusedforthis:TegrityandCamtasia,eachwith its advantages and disadvantages.This year a new, powerful, easy-to-useand easily accessible video and lecturecapture application arrived at Hostos

that isavailableforunlimitedusebyallfaculty. Called Panopto, it brings manyfeaturesthatgiveitadvantagesoverthepreviously mentioned applications, go-ing far beyond a mere lecture captureapplicationtobeingavideoproductionand editing tool, a media file managerandlibrary,andcollaborativeteaching/learningsite.

Easy to use.If you’re familiar with Tegrity, Panoptoworksinmuchthesameway.Justclickthe Record button to start recording.When you’re done it quickly processesand uploads the recording to the Pan-optocoursefolder.It’sthenavailableforviewing.

Panopto resides in BlackboardHostos has purchased the Panoptobuildingblock,whichmeansitfunctionslike a plugin that you access throughBlackboard. There are many advan-tagestothis. In the course that you want to use Panopto, !click on Customization in the Control Panel to expand it, !then click on Tool Availability.

In the Tool Availability page, scroll down, and verify that the box next to Panopto Course Tool Application

is checked. If it is not checked, then check it, and click Submit.

In December 2015 the Office of Edu-cational Technology with the EdTechLeadershipCouncilemailedall facultyalinktoasurveyabouttheirexperiencesteaching with technology. 114 faculty

members responded to the survey.Therespondents’ represented the followingdepartments:

73% identified themselves as full timefacultyandtwenty-sevenpercentidenti-fiedasadjunctfaculty.Themajority(over80%)hadbeenteachingatHostosfor6ormoresemestersandthemajoritywere

inprofessorialtitles(17%Professor,17%Associate Professor and 36% AssistantProfessor).More than75%of the respondentshadexperienceaddingaBlackboardcompo-nenttotheircourses.Thisapproximatelyaligns with the EdTech Office’s experi-ence that approximately 60% of facultyactivate the Blackboard sites associatedwith their courses, each semester. Seechart1foradditionalinfo.Faculty members had a variety of re-sponses to the open-ended questionof what needs to be in place in order

for them to try teaching hybrid or on-line courses. Many indicated that theyneeded additional training, better sup-portingtechnology(bothintermsofon-lineresources intheirsubjectareasand

technology support on campus), anddata showing that online courses wereas good as, or better, than in-personcourses.Faculty members then responded toquestionsabouttheirtechnologyneeds,

theirexperienceswithSmartClassroomson campus, and their professional de-velopmentneeds.Blackboard,Comput-ers on Wheels (COWS) and multimediacarts were commonly used technologyresources. Faculty members indicatedthey used technology often to share

audio, video and library resources withtheirclasses.SeeChart2(below)forad-ditionalinfo.Faculty members who indicated thatthey taught in SmartClassrooms wereaskedavarietyofquestionsabouttheirexperiences using the SmartRooms atHostos. Of the respondents, the major-ityhadtaughtinSmartClassroomsforatleast4semesters:

• 16%taughtinaSmartClassroomfor1semester

• 24%taughtinaSmartClassroomfor

2-3semesters• 5% taught in a SmartClassroom for

4-5semesters• 34%taughtinaSmartClassroomfor

6ormoresemesters• Faculty members responded to an

open-ended question about otherneedsnotaskedaboutonthesurvey.Aselectionoftheirresponsesfollows:

• Chairs-Therearetimesyouwanttosit at the computer located at theteacher’s station.We do not have a

chairthatishighenoughtoseethescreen.Weneedachairthatmatch-estheheightofthecomputertable.

• Room architecture: B-507 (smartclassroom)onlyfits23students,be-cause there is a big column whichobstructtheview.Youcannotputatableorchairsbehindthiswidecol-umn. I had 26 students, and it wasreal challenge. I called facilities andinformed the Registrars, but not-ing has been done. In the future,this room should only be allocated

• Desks:Theset-upofthedesksisnotconducive to group work. It is timeconsumingtomovethedesksaround.

• WiFi-ThewifiinBuildingAhasnotbeen working all semester despitereports to IT… 3rd floor B class-rooms have such slow internetaccess that connecting to vital re-sources becomes a major hurdle.

• Cleaning: The area that houses theequipment needs to be cleaned

more often. The accumulation ofdust around the PC can cause theequipment to malfunction and alsoisunhealthyfortheusers.

Step Four: Create Questions. Yorkers who speak two languages—Eng-lish and a native or heritage language—makeuseoftheselanguagesintheirdailylives.Togetherwithme(Francisco),shecre-atedanon-linesurvey.Thefirstpartofthesurvey asks participants to indicate howoftentheyusetheirnon-Englishlanguagein various situations—at home, in theirneighborhoods,atwork,atschool,etc.Thesecondpartofthesurveyhasopen-endedquestions; here the participants may, if

theywish,writenarrativesabouttheirex-periences using two languages.With thissurveyDr.Dicker,whoisalinguistaswellas a professor of English, wishes to chal-lenge the widely-accepted notions thatimmigrantlanguagesdisappear intwoorthree generations, and that Americans ingeneral are assimilating to one commonculture and one common language, theso-called“meltingpot.”
