Urban Lane, Pakenham St
01:
NEW ZEALANDERS ARE AN INGENIOUS PEOPLE. WE HAVE A STRONG HERITAGE OF DEVELOPING GREAT IDEAS BORNE OUT OF PRACTICAL NECESSITY, OR INSPIRED BRILLIANCE, OR SIMPLY AN INSTINCT OF WHAT MIGHT WORK.
WE ARE NATURAL IDEAS PEOPLE.
Vesper Marine is a leading
manufacturer of innovative marine
safety products and has recently
been awarded the highly-coveted
2012 Professional Mariner Samuel
Plimsoll Award for Innovation. Honouring important
contributions to safety by individuals and organisations
in the maritime industry, the award recognises Vesper
Marine’s Virtual AIS Beacon for significantly improving
the wellbeing of mariners by increasing safety and
efficiency levels in the industry.
Les Mills International is
the creator of global group
fitness programmes, including
BODYPUMP™ (weights based). From its base in
downtown Auckland, this global fitness brand
exports patented group exercise classes to gyms,
fitness centres and health clubs around the world.
Attendance at classes exceeds three million
workouts per week, held across 80 countries
in more than 14,000 licensed clubs.
LANZATECH ENERGY MADVESPER MARINE LES MILLS INTERNATIONALEnergy Mad designs, manufactures
and sells energy efficient lighting.
Its vision: make lives better by saving
enough electricity to power Europe.
Each Energy Mad Ecobulb saves
consumers up to $240 over its life and boasts a
lifespan 15 times that of a traditional incandescent
bulb. Energy Mad employs 14 people, with a small but
focused international business team of five. Three years
ago, offshore sales accounted for just two per cent of
their revenue. Today, international sales make up 93
percent of their total revenue.
True innovation is about both the origination and adoption of ideas for a
valuable purpose – to improve the quality of life, to better satisfy demand,
to create wealth and to produce new possibilities and standards of quality.
Ideas need to deliver in order to count as innovation.
The romantic belief that New Zealanders can solve any problem with
a piece of ‘number 8 fencing wire’ and a bit of time in the shed has bred
an earthy ‘can-do’ pragmatism into our culture.
While New Zealanders seem to have the knack for cracking big ideas,
there is still room for improvement when it comes to developing those
ideas into sustainable, profitable and game-changing business successes.
LanzaTech is challenging the
industrial world’s definition of
waste, showing that unwanted
gases from sources including
steel mills, oil refineries and coal-fired power stations
can be used as a resource for fuel and chemical
production. The company already has partnership
agreements across a variety of sectors and has partnered
with seven Global Fortune 500 companies. Their goal is to
become a billion dollar company within seven years, with
a fully sustainable economically and socially beneficial
process that will enable energy security for the world.
NEW ZEALAND NEEDS A CREATIVE GATEWAY TO THE WORLD
OUR FUTURE DEPENDS ON COMMERCIALISING OUR IDEAS.
02:
“...we must act aggressively if knowledge-based industries are not to be pulled across the Tasman. Hence the importance of Auckland being very public, loud and credible in promoting itself as a knowledge-based city. Hence the importance of the Wynyard Quarter of celebrating our institutions, of promoting technology clusters, of the city being active rather than passive.”
THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM HAS IDENTIFIED INNOVATION AND BUSINESS SOPHISTICATION AS THE MOST IMPORTANT INCOME DRIVERS OF ADVANCED ECONOMIES. To become great innovators we need people and
companies who can not only come up with fantastic
ideas, but also commercialise them into successful,
sustainable businesses that employ skilled people,
attract customers from around the world, earn export
revenue and create wealth for the country.
Gains in innovation happen by design rather than
by accident.
Innovation clusters create a competitive advantage
for our companies. They provide an eco-system for
growth that effectively brings together the right sort
of talent for collaboration, investment in research and
development, marketing flair, government support,
legal advice, local services and efficient access
to market scale.
In the independent Powering Innovation report prepared for the Ministry of Science and Innovation (2011) several factors were identified that can help lift the level and quality of innovation in New Zealand
through strategies that include a cluster approach.
• Innovationworksbestwithinanintegrated
eco-system, whereas innovation in New Zealand
is currently too fragmented.
• Afocusisneededtoencourageandattract
research and development investment both
locally and from offshore.
• Thereisaneedtocreatebetterlinksbetween
government and the private sector as well as
academic and commercial partnerships.
• Weneedtofindwaystofosterastrongerculture
of research, development and innovation in
New Zealand, so that it becomes more deeply
ingrained in how we do business.
THE TIME IS RIGHT FOR THIS KIND OF DEVELOPMENT.
PROFESSOR SIR PETER GLUCKMAN, CHIEF ADVISOR TO THE PRIME MINISTER
In a 2007 review of innovation policy in
New Zealand the OECD commented:
“Two decades of economic reform have laid the
foundations for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Product markets work well, the labour market is
flexible and the economy is open. Public research
organisations are world-class in many areas,
notably in agriculture and health.”

This is an opportunity for Auckland, New Zealand to
invest both public and private resources in innovation
clusters that help our companies become high-tech
success stories both locally and internationally.
03:The proposed Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct (WQIP)
is a purpose-built innovation cluster that will position
Auckland as a centre for high-tech business, research
and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
It will bring together in one place the focus, resources,
connections and opportunities to launch high-tech
business success on the global stage.
It will provide budding entrepreneurs the ideal incubator
environment in which to start-up, with flexible stylish
workspaces and close proximity to business, financial
and legal advice.
It is a place where like-minded and complementary
high-tech companies can work alongside one another,
collaborate and create new possibilities.
WYNYARD QUARTER INNOVATION PRECINCT.
It will be the centre that attracts smart high-tech talent
from within New Zealand and the wider world.
It will become a destination for international customers
looking for smart companies to work with.
It is where venture capitalists will look for partners with
whom to grow and create wealth from research and
development and business investment.
It provides local and central government focus for
their support for innovation and growing business
sophistication.
And looking to the future, the Wynyard Quarter
Innovation Precinct will be an exciting and inspirational
place for young students imagining a life in science or
technology. Or perhaps making their mark as
New Zealand’s next high-tech star.
IT IS A PLACE WHERE LIKE-MINDED AND COMPLEMENTARY HIGH-TECH COMPANIES CAN WORK ALONGSIDE ONE ANOTHER, COLLABORATE AND CREATE NEW POSSIBILITIES.

04: THE WYNYARD QUARTER ENVIRONMENT IS PERFECT.
WYNYARD QUARTER IS THE IDEAL LOCATION FOR THE INNOVATION CLUSTER.Situated in between the Auckland CBD and the majestic
Waitemata Harbour, Wynyard Quarter is an exciting
new multi-purpose development.
It blends the traditional character and energy of
Auckland’s marine and fishing industry with newly
created spaces for more commerce, events, restaurants
and bars, high-class hotel accommodation and
sophisticated apartment living.
Within close proximity are fabulous facilities for
recreation and taking-in Auckland’s beautiful views.
Whether it is a run along the waterfront with the dog,
flying a kite with the children in Victoria Park, sailing
out of Westhaven, enjoying fresh seafood from a North
Wharf restaurant, or a short walk to the downtown
shopping area, this is a great place to be.
Wynyard Quarter is a special place that people will
find inviting to work, live, play or simply spend time in.
It has all the ingredients to fire the imagination and
foster the collaborative spirit required to energise an
innovation cluster.
Based in Auckland, the Wynyard Quarter Innovation
Precinct will also enjoy the advantages and promise of
being in New Zealand’s most international and fastest
growing city.
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest population
and economic centre, with more people of most
backgrounds and skills, more business activity, more
educational institutions and more diversity of cultures
than any other city in the country.
Whether it is linking with the rest of New Zealand,
or the world, Auckland is our best-connected city for
transport, communications and commercial networks.
Auckland is also New Zealand’s best-resourced centre
for finance, events, accommodation and entertainment.
The Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct will become
a shining light in Auckland’s future achievements.
THE INGREDIENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION CLUSTER.
05: IN ITS BUSINESS CASE FOR THE PRECINCT, INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANTS PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS (PWC) HAVE ESTIMATED ESTABLISHMENT COSTS AND RETURNS YIELDING A SIGNIFICANT COST/BENEFIT RATIO.The priority will be to focus on high value sectors like ICT
and digital media e.g. software and/or music publishing,
telecommunication services and computer system design.
This sector accounts for 1 in 30 New Zealand jobs and
1 in 10 dollars of Auckland’s economy, representing a
low risk investment due to their modest infrastructure
requirements.
The benefits that are likely to come from such an
investment will include:
• A showcase for science and innovation for Auckland-
based companies, products and capabilities to wider
domestic and international audiences.
• The creation of more than 2700 new jobs, 200 of which
are new to Auckland, will be based in the cluster.
• Improving the overall qualifications of the workforce
by attracting and retaining highly skilled ICT and
Digital Media professionals.
• The WQIP cluster will help overcome the lack of capital
and critical mass that hampers high-tech development.
THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT 2011 REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BEST PRACTICE, “FOSTERING INNOVATION-LED CLUSTERS”, DESCRIBED SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES THAT LEAD TO SUCCESSFUL INNOVATION CLUSTERS.
1. A Government/private sector blend of investment
is best – this creates both scale and the efficiency
of market forces.
2. Collaboration between firms is crucial – clusters
are ultimately about people working together to
transform ideas into business opportunities.
3. Talent is a very important factor – attracting top
talent into the cluster is vital.
4. Governments need to promote a culture of innovation
and entrepreneurship – this encourages creativity
and risk-taking.
5. Clusters work best when they are focused on a
specific sector, rather than too much unconnected
breadth across sectors.
6. Governments can help create the right environment
– supportive policies for things like taxation,
immigration and intellectual property are crucial.
7. You do not need a large domestic market if you think
globally from the outset.
INVESTING IN INNOVATION CLUSTERS HAS PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONALLY IN COUNTRIES SUCH AS SINGAPORE, DENMARK, NORWAY, USA, UK AND SOUTH KOREA. =

THREE SUCCESS FACTORS ARE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO ACCELERATE INNOVATION AND BUSINESS GROWTH. The right tenant mix and structure –
attract high profile anchor tenants and a
strong tertiary and/or research presence and
an incubator that can help entrepreneurs
start their businesses up with advice,
support, intellectual property, legal advice,
office space and access to venture capital.
Access – capital to a critical mass of skilled
people, communication technology and
flexible workspaces.
Governance and support – co-ordinated
strategy and active management.

EUSLEADING CITIES ARE NOW INCLUDING
INNOVATION AS PART OF THEIR AGENDA TO ATTRACT TALENTED PEOPLE AND BUILD ECONOMIC SUCCESS. A new type of development is emerging in the
most forward thinking districts of the world.
Their common goal: to attract groups of innovative
workers. To foster these cities’ creative ecosystems,
careful consideration has gone into planning
flexible housing options to fit the lifestyle needs
of this workforce. Public infrastructure and
programming improves networking opportunities
and promotes co-working spaces.
Not wanting to reinvent the wheel, Auckland has
studied these leading cities where this is already
underway. We have looked for the common threads
and qualities that make a place attractive to talented
people with ideas, new businesses on a growth path
and research organisations.
The factors that drive innovation and economic
growth are unique to each neighbourhood.
However, we have seen what works from these
ground-breaking examples.
In each place, the quality offering of a work/life
balance draws people in and invites others to come
and see what is going on in the innovation districts.
And in each place there is a hub where people can
go to accelerate the growth of ideas.

Media TIC is a 14,000m2 business incubator in a wider innovation district whose functions include technology research, knowledge transfer, making connections between companies, showrooms for new ICT technology, a training centre and outreach programmes.
Special attention has been paid to the ground floor, where communal services and communication spaces enhance the connection to the district.
Although larger in scale than Wynyard Central, the Barcelona district is an exemplar of how innovation initiatives can be integrated with broader urban renewal objectives and the image, identity and appeal of a city as a whole. The Barcelona project includes the development of new city streets, open spaces, residential intensification and key public buildings with a focus on high quality design and architecture. Particular emphasis is placed on the coexistence of innovative and dynamic companies with established and local ones to provide a rich and productive urban fabric.

A $5 million, 9,000ft2 innovation centre which is both a business incubator and venue for science and tech companies. It will be administered, programmed and booked by the same people who run the Cambridge Innovation Centre in Kendall Square Boston. It is not an office-incubator space as Cambridge Innovation Centre is, but a venue for local technology businesses to hold entrepreneur-investor meetings and social/business gatherings and forums.
SEAPORT SQUAREBOSTON
HAFENCITY HAMBURG
Boston’s Seaport Square Innovation District is similar in scale and location to Wynyard Central and a key part of a broader urban renewal project. The District includes mixed-use redevelopment which integrates retail, residential and complimentary commercial uses with incubator and work spaces purpose-built for innovation. The project also establishes a new public realm and waterfront destination for the city. Citizen participation and engagement is encouraged through an ‘urban lab’ which will test new technologies and urban strategies that reinforce community and place.
KEY POINTS:Similar in scale
Mixed-use strategy
Waterfront location
Synergies with business, educational and cultural institutions
A ‘destination’ in its own right
Urban Lab and Incubator
HafenCity covers an area of 157 hectares, making it one of the most prominent inner-city waterfront development projects in the world. Based on a new concept for urban living, it will increase the size of Hamburg City by 40 percent (Hamburg has a population of approx. 1.78 million, the Hamburg Metropolitan Region 4.3 million). Between the historic Speicherstadt Warehouse District and the River Elbe, a new city with a cosmopolitan mix of homes, service businesses, culture, leisure, tourism and commerce is emerging. HafenCity is already rated as the model project for international waterfront and ‘new downtown’ development.
KEY POINTS:Similar in scale

KNOWLEDGE QUARTER NUCLEUS
HafenCity’s new Knowledge Quarter is a similar scale to Wynyard Central and shares a high profile waterfront location and truly mixed-use approach. This project places particular importance on high quality urban design, architectural and sustainable design standards which provide an exemplar. HafenCity’s innovation strategy has established synergies with adjacent commercial activities, cultural institutions and Hamburg University to ensure it is both a dynamic working environment and a vibrant and accessible ‘destination’.

THE IDEA OF WYNYARD QUARTER INNOVATION PRECINCT IS ALREADY GAINING SUPPORT FROM SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S MOST GROUNDBREAKING COMPANIES.
Based in Auckland, Oktobor Animation is New Zealand’s largest
CG animation studio and currently provides full service CG production
for Nickelodeon on the Emmy Award-winning Penguins of Madagascar
series, the new Kung Fu Panda: Legend of Awesomeness film and
the soon to be released comedy Robot and Monster. Oktobor Animation
considers itself to be just one of a number of key players in New Zealand’s
hi-tech eco-system and welcomes the opportunity to work closely with
innovative and similarly-minded companies.
Nextspace provides powerful 3D tools to allow cities to visualise their
assets and operations as if they were viewing them in the real world.
From this, they can easily interpret proposed development and policy
changes and offer more robust consultation. Nextspace uses its Visual
City technology platform to capture data from multiple sources and
display the information as a dynamic 3D model. This helps cities make
decisions based on visual evidence and encourages interaction and
participation. The most popular applications of Visual City are used for
city planning and operations, public consultation, transport simulations
and modernising utilities.
