DEAR GRADUATE OR FRIEND,It has truly been a momentous year, and as I look back on my second year as a member of this generous and supportive community, I see the progress we have made in many of the endeavors that prepare Goucher students for the jobs of the future. The collective vision we have for Goucher to provide a transformative education has advanced in many ways, and we continue to build upon the institution’s strong foundation of innovation.

The broad range of gis from our donors has made so much possible this year, including expanding funds for scholarships through investments, like our Dorsey Scholars program, and the opening of Pagliaro Selz Hall. From groundbreaking to construction to opening the doors to first-year students this past August, it is an amazing project involving the dedication and collaboration of so many. And it would not have been possible without the support of several generous donors, especially Lisa and Bernard Selz.

We were honored by the response to the inaugural gala fundraiser, and the second annual gala carried on this new tradition with a grand celebration highlighting Goucher’s commitment to service and social justice through the work of our alumnae/i honorees. Bringing together a full house of Goucher supporters, we were all very #goucherproud and look forward to exceeding expectations in 2017.

Goucher also received numerous accolades over the past year, many for our commitment to innovation. Locally, we were honored by The Daily Record as a 2016 Innovator of the Year. Additionally, we were once again named a Top 10 Most Innovative College by U.S. News & World Report. As supporters of the college, I hope these honors fortify your Goucher pride and bolster your commitment to the school.

So many of these efforts and programs are made possible not only through generous gis from alumnae/i, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the college, but also through the volunteer support provided by the Goucher community. Whether it’s hosting a Goucher student for an internship, serving on a program committee, or rolling up your sleeves to set up tables at Alumnae/i Weekend, we appreciate the countless ways you give back. I hope you will continue to support us in these many ways and encourage others in the Goucher community to do the same.

The breadth and depth of accomplishments over this past year, which have laid the foundation for our investment in reimagining liberal arts education, are made possible through the dedication and commitment of the entire Goucher community throughout the world. Again, I thank all of you who made a gi during the 2015-16 year and I look forward to working with you over the coming year.

With sincere gratitude,

José Antonio Bowen, President

DEAR FELLOW GRADUATE OR FRIEND,Goucher’s ability to thrive and embrace innovation in higher education is made possible through the many types of generosity from our community of alumnae/i and friends. We are deeply grateful for the loyal support Goucher donors continue to provide as we expand the vision for a dynamic, living-learning environment. We are pleased to share this online version of the Honor Roll of Donors, which allows us to convey more broadly the investment so many have made in the institution.

Your generosity is felt across campus—from students who receive financial aid to faculty who benefit from professional development opportunities, as well as the whole campus community, which gains enrichment from sponsored events like our visiting lecturers and artists. A total of $12.2 million was donated in 2015-16, thanks to the kindness of the Goucher community.

And Goucher Society members, along with the community as a whole, have supported Goucher College in many ways beyond financial considerations. The impact of so many giving their time, talents, and treasure is immeasurable. We want to thank and recognize those who have volunteered over the past year and are excited to announce that for the first time we will highlight volunteers in this Honor Roll. This encompasses Goucher’s mission of service and social justice and our gratitude for all you do.

Together, our gis make Goucher College a more vibrant community!

On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, we sincerely thank you. We ask for your continued support as we expand our curricular innovations and build upon the institution’s solid foundation while we navigate a new era in higher education together.

Sincerely,

Kimara Ahnert ’91 Goucher Society Co-chair

In its inaugural year, seven deserving first-year students were the recipients of

the Dr. Rhoda M. Dorsey Scholars Program. This exclusive leadership program offers outstanding students with exceptional

leadership an annual scholarship. These emerging leaders will develop their leadership skills both on and off

campus, through opportunities to connect with visiting notables, complementary

coursework, and volunteer service in the local community.

I support Goucher because thanks to the generosity of families, faculty, and staff, a student leaves Goucher prepared to

problem solve. I also continue to support Goucher because Goucher students make the world a better place, because they are genuine and confident in their ability to

take on life’s challenges.

Goucher College’s bold move to find a new way to discover talent and increase

college access through its Goucher Video Application (GVA) has worked. Students who were accepted through

the GVA did slightly better during their first semester than their peers admitted

through the conventional application process, confirming the GVA is just as

capable of predicting success in college as more traditional application methods.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 26: INNOVATION - Goucher

24

The financial results for June 30, 2016, reflect stable student revenues, progress on the first phase of the capital plan with the opening of the first building in the first-year village, and investment in salaries in line with strategic objectives.

Under President Bowen’s leadership, additional resources were directed at efforts to improve retention and enhance admissions and enrollment operations. This resulted in growth of $339,000 in net tuition, fees, and auxiliary revenues to about $49 million, or about two-thirds of the college’s total revenues.

In fiscal 2016, the college watched as President Bowen’s vision for a first-year village took shape with the construction of Pagliaro Selz Hall. To assist with capital plan funding, cash management and operational investment strategies were enhanced, resulting in a $743,000 increase in revenues from other sources.

In FY2016, the board approved President Bowen’s request for a small increase to the endowment payout. The additional funds were used for general support and student financial aid, principally, minimizing cost increases to students, one of President Bowen’s strategic objectives. Current giving and endowment support from prior gis comprise more than 26 percent of total revenues.

Stable tuition and fee revenue, stable fundraising, increased support from the endowment, and growth in the auxiliary enterprises resulted in total revenue growth of 2 percent to $72 million.

Overall, expenses rose a percent driven by investments in personnel aimed at growing enrollments over the years to come. In the end, Goucher closed the books with a $1.3 million surplus—a $604,000 improvement from the prior year.

Well being:“The number of Goucher

alumnae/i thriving in all five elements of well-being (purpose, social, financial, community, and

physical) is almost double the national average.”

Workplace Engagement:

“Goucher graduates are more engaged at work;

8 percent higher than the national average.”

Gallup and Purdue University created an index that examines the long-term successes of graduates as they pursue a good job and better life. Goucher partnered with Gallup to see how its alumnae/i are faring and how well it prepared its students overall for a good life.
