HKU alumnus David Lee is flying high across the tech world, yet the Hong Kong native has never forgotten his roots. In front of the FBe class

of 2019, he offered fascinating insights into his career, returning triumphantly as keynote speaker at the FBe graduation ceremony.

From learning halls to the big leagueDavid graduated from the University of Hong Kong with first class honours in BBA (Information Systems) and BEng (Software Engineering) in 2003 and 2004 respectively. It was during his third year of study at HKU that he co-founded his first start-up “team and Concepts” with seven other HKU students, developing a web calendar app three years before Google Calendar was invented. “We didn’t have a lot of resources, but we were very resourceful,” he told the attentive audience.

After graduation, he joined classmates to set up a company full time. editgrid, their online collaborative spreadsheet, was acquired by

Apple in 2008 and David was honoured as one of Business Week’s “Asia’s Best Entrepreneurs under 25”. “When you envision a different future, you can start bending reality with your own effort,” he said. “start by sharing your vision and asking for support – you’ll be surprised how many people share the dream – blaze your own path,” he told the students.

David’s innovations were noticed by industry players and he relocated to silicon Valley to work for Apple in 2009. After eight years, he decided it was time to move on. He co-founded neX team Inc., which uses mobile AI technologies that understand and analyse mobile video capture in real-time. the team is currently focused on their ios app, HomeCourt, which applies these technologies to basketball. “Look at me, I’m 5 foot 5, and I’m not even good at basketball,” he told at the congregation.

We didn’t have a lot of resources, but we were very

Reaching the NBAstep by step, the team inputted information and data and built the app’s capabilities, making it applicable to players and coaches wanting feedback on their techniques. they eventually signed a strategic partnership with the NBA and gained investors such as Jeremy Lin, steve nash and Mark Cuban. A highlight of their work was being invited by Apple to present HomeCourt’s innovative shot science with steve nash at Apple’s new iPhone event.

David’s journey up until now has been one of spirit, innovation and commitment and he has been an inspiration for many at the University of Hong Kong. Does David have any words of wisdom for FBE graduates? As he puts it, “Write your own story. With every challenge there comes an opportunity. the opportunity to build your character, resilience, and test your creativity. Follow your passions, listen to your heart, you will find your path. The future is for you to create.”

to inspire the interest of students to learn economics, we cannot simply teach them the technical skills to solve the economic models. We have to show them that economics is relevant: the subject can help them develop insights about the real world that they live in. to engage the students in the learning process, we cannot simply use the monotonous chalk-and-talk presentation format in the lectures. We have to draw the attention of the students by using multi-media in the lecture presentation and to enrich the learning experience of the students by adopting a variety of active learning activities.

Design and delivery are the two most significant factors in my teaching preparation. Design includes digesting academic materials to find the hidden twists that may challenge students’ understanding and creating teaching materials that fit the learning style of most students. While good design produces the tangibles, delivery is all about the intangibles, such as logic, pace, tone, and atmosphere. You may vary these elements in different classes based on the background, interests, and characteristics of different student groups. successfully established intangibles will naturally build a trustworthy environment for students to interact with you. the feedback you collect from students will also help you with designing the next class.

Double Davids in awards bonanza

In a swoop of accolades, HKU Faculty of Business and economics lecturers David Lee and David Bishop received both the Teaching Innovation Team Award from the university and the Faculty Special Contribution Teaching Award conferred by the Faculty.

The double win came with the team running a highly popular MOOC (massive online open course) about ethics and risks in financial technology on EdX. Abandoning the talking head style instructional videos commonly used in MooCs, they designed a series of dialogical, animated and case-based instructional videos to engage learners and initiate debate and discussion.

“the online socratic method was very much well received by over 7,000 learners, resulting in an average video completion rate of over 80 percent, and over 4,000 discussion posts generated in the first six-week offering of the course, which are very high for a MooC,” Mr. Lee said.

the MooC course also connected the global learning community with HKU’s on-campus students with simultaneous video discussions. “By doing so, global perspectives were brought to local classrooms, and the Hong Kong specific context was also shared with the international audience,” Mr. Bishop said.

Together, their course has raised the profile of the University as a leading centre for innovative teaching and learning as well as a knowledge hub to explore fintech and the implication of new technologies. Upon the initial launch of the course in May 2019, more than 6,000 learners registered globally, with momentum gaining as another 1,000 joined soon after the launch.

Dr. Lilian Chan wins Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award 2019

Dr . L i l i a n C h a n ,   A s s o c i a t e P r o f e s s o r i n Accounting and Law,  received the Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award  for her  research accomplishments in the knowledge exchange

project “The Impact of Clawback Research on Policy Making by The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the US”. 

Most notably, Dr. Chan’s research was one of the first published works related to clawback provisions in the accounting and finance areas. The research has been a major influence on the seC’s policy on implementing an important regulation of the Dodd-Frank Act in the US.

this determined whether every listed company in the Us had to introduce provisions to limit the rewards that top executives could retain, and if their company would to be forced to correct misstatements of their earnings due to fraud. Following the publication of the research, the findings were cited in debates among policy makers, legislators, industry leaders, and market participants.

october. nearly 200 alumni, students, and guests gathered for this memorable evening.

Speaking at the dinner, Professor Hongbin Cai, HKU Dean of Business and economics, expressed gratitude to alumni and students for their support to the Faculty over the years, and outlined his hope that they would continue to render their support to the Faculty’s future development.

the event highlight of the day was the speech made by a special guest, Dr. song Li, Founder of Zhenai.com. the site is now the largest paid matchmaking platform in China and Asia. Registered members reach approximately 200 million and annual revenue has been estimated at around 3 billion yuan in 2019.

Dr. Li shared his entrepreneurial journey of walking away from a lucrative investment banker job to start his own business. He emphasised that a successful entrepreneurship relies heavily on the access to potential markets. the market shows that entrepreneurships usually fail due to a lack of market demand.

He concluded by advising the audience that they should try “to be flexible and tough… you have to be brutally honest with yourself about your idea. Entrepreneurship is a journey of exploration not only of your mind, but also of the journey itself.”

Lively welcome for taught masters programmes students

More than 480 students, guests and alumni participated in a welcome ceremony for students of FBe taught masters programmes on

24 August 2019 at the HKU Grand Hall.

Professor Hongbin Cai, HKU Dean of Business and economics, kicked off the ceremony, introducing programme directors and teachers, including Professor Yuk-fai Fong, Associate Dean for Taught Postgraduate, to the new students.

An engaging panel discussion took place at the ceremony, with Professor Fong and the alumni delving into the topic of “How to make the most of your postgraduate studies at HKU Business school”. students received practical tips, with panellists indicating that a solid foundation of industry knowledge, good job search skills, and a strong professional network, increase the chances of finding an ideal job. They advised students to stay healthy, active and social to boost their skills and reminded them to be resilient in this challenging world.

Fostering a brilliant future with FBE Mentorship Programme 2019-20

Academic performance is a critical f a c e t o f e d u c a t i o n , b u t w o r k experience and mentorship are equally important, particularly in

the business world. this was highlighted at the Kick-off Ceremony of Faculty of Business and Economics Mentorship Programme 2019-20 on 23 october 2019.

on the day, the Faculty welcomed a record number of mentors with a diversified business background, including alumni, friends and supporters of the Faculty; as well as about 70 student mentees embarking on this year’s mentorship journey.

Professor Hongbin Cai, HKU Dean of Business and economics, kick-started the event with a warm welcome to our mentors and mentees. He expressed gratitude to mentors for their generous support to the Faculty over the years, and hoped mentees this year could get the most out of the programme.

three young alumni, who were previous mentees, shared their experience and study tips to student mentees. Udara Senevirathne (BEcon&Fin 2017), senior officer – Business Development, new World Development Company Limited; Teddy Chiu (BBA(Acc&Fin) 2018), Analyst at Accenture; and Natalie Law (BBA 2019), Analyst at Citi Private Bank, offered their thoughts in an engaging session.

“the mentorship programme opened me up to have a really good understanding of business, such as skills like how to do your CV or assessing your expectations and options,” says Udara. Looking back on the programme, natalie says it was “a very good opportunity to train your skills to know more about the industry itself. I personally also enjoyed all the enrichment programmes organised by FBe.”

Aside from this, Udara sees networking as a crucial take away from the programme. “the internships are very helpful in terms of networking. outside of that there are also many opportunities organised by different groups and businesses – seize the day and make use of them,” Udara advises.

For natalie, having a mentorship constructed the building blocks for her career. “I was a summer

analyst in Citi Private Bank and then fortunately received a ful l t ime offer and came back. Remember to open yourself to more opportunities – don't try to limit your options because they're uncomfortable to do. Knowing your personality is very important,” she says.

the success of the programme stems from the fact that it provides opportunities for students to connect with the real business world, while mentoring empowers students by sharing of knowledge, experience, encouragement and inspiration. through regular mentoring sessions in the academic year, students gain in professional and personal development.

teddy advises students to go beyond the mentorship programme by independently seeking chances for learning. “I joined a few case competitions and met many amazing people from different countries. I think that's a very good way for you to expand your network,” he says.

Finally, if things don’t go according to plan after graduation, keep going through the struggle. “Perhaps you performed poorly in your internship, or during another programme, but at least you learnt your lesson and can take that away and apply it to your next opportunity. I think it’s really important to learn from mistakes,” teddy adds.

Employee turnover is a constant scourge of businesses. Recruiting, on boarding and training employees is a costly and time-consuming affair. While a certain amount of turnover is always to be

expected in any company, businesses are constantly seeking ways to encourage their employees to stay with the firm. Some of these measures are employee-focused, such as offering salary raises or bonuses, holding team-building activities, offering training or attractive career–building opportunities, while others include enhancing the company’s brand and reputation through corporate social responsibility.

one under-explored area is the question of whether employees’ positive perceptions of a company’s CSR activities may play a part in encouraging existing staff to stay. that gap has now been filled by new research published in Personnel Psychology 2019 and conducted by Thomas W. H. Ng, Professor of Management and strategy of the University of Hong Kong; Kai Chi Yam, Assistant Professor of Management and Organisation of National University of Singapore, and Herman Aguinis, Professor of Management of George Washington University in the United states.

they found positive results to their study of the idea that “perceived CSR lowers employee turnover because it enhances employees’ pride, which then translates to strengthened organisational embeddedness (OE) that lowers the tendency to leave.”

CSR BenefitsCSR can be defined as corporate policies and actions that go beyond the organisation’s interest and aim to affect stakeholders positively. It comes in many shapes and forms and may include donating a portion of a company’s profits to charity; raising funds for good causes; conducting environmentally positive activities, such as cleaning beaches or helping repair earthquake damage; volunteering in local communities, or otherwise making a positive contribution to the world.

The positive impacts of CSR for companies include improving company branding and recognition; enhancing customer loyalty; increasing marketing effectiveness; building the company’s appeal, particularly among millennials, and helping to rebuild a positive public image following a scandal.

Employee perceptionsMany of these benefits are outward-focused and look at the objective CSR activities from the company’s perspective. One aspect of CSR that has been neglected, however, is the impact on employees of the firm’s CSR activities. What this study adds to the research is an investigation of the benefits to the company that result from employees’ positive reactions to their company’s CSR activities.

the premise of the study rests on the theory that a linked sequence of outcomes exists between CSR perception, emotion, attitude and behaviour. that is, as the authors put it, “…perceived CSR leads employees to experience emotions. These emotional responses then trigger job attitudes. Finally, job attitudes result in job behaviours.”

Once employees are aware of a company’s CSR activities – and this is not a given, as many employees may be unaware or under aware of such activities – emotions are triggered. the most important emotion explored here is pride. When an employee feels that their organisation is doing something positive, they feel pride in their organisation, which may then trigger a change in employees’ attitude.

To evaluate the impact of CSR on employees, the study focused on examining the employees’ perceptions of CSR to understand their reactions by incorporating inputs from organisational behaviour, human resources management and applied psychology. In particular, they looked at employees’ perception of their firms’ CSR activities rather than looking at the activities themselves or the company’s view of CSR. “Crucially it is the appraisers’ subjective perceptions of CSR, such as its nature,

motives and beneficiaries that are mainly responsible for the appraisers’ reactions,” say the authors.

Organisational pride and embeddednessOnce CSR has been perceived, several emotions may be triggered, with pride being paramount among them. “[W]e focus on organisational pride in particular because of individuals’ tendency to be cognisant of cues that make them feel good about themselves or about the groups to which they belong,” explain the authors. Because CSR activities are deemed as positive actions, they transmit feel-good cues to employees who perceive them. this organisational pride is triggered by information or cues about the company that lets them see their employer in a positive light. CSR activities fit into this category by enabling employees to perceive their company as capable and resourceful, and perhaps better than other companies. the fact that their company has undertaken these kinds of activities can also make employees feel positive about the management as being fair and caring.

once a feeling of pride is experienced, employees feel more attached to the source of that pride. For example, they may feel closer to the company’s goals, mission and values, and its management team. this ‘organisational embeddedness’ is defined as the extent to which employees are enmeshed with their employers, and is an overall attitude born of positive feelings towards the company. It has a direct impact on the likelihood of employees’ subsequent decisions about whether to stay with a company. “When employees are proud of their part in their organisations and assimilate the organisation entity into their self-evaluations, they are more willing to stay to help the organisation survive and prosper, as the well-being of the organisation directly affects the well-being of the employee,” explain the authors.

Linking the resultsthe authors ran four studies focusing on male and female respondents in the Us and Hong Kong and working in both

managerial and non-managerial roles. In brief, the studies required participants to imagine they were working for an organisation with a specified level of CSR activities and then complete surveys to measure their organisational pride and organisational embeddedness in these companies. the results showed that employees felt more pride when they had higher perceptions of their company’s CSR activities. The more pride they felt, the more organisational embeddedness they reported.

the authors showed the importance of organisational embeddedness both as a desired outcome and as a likely deterrent to leaving the company. “through tethering employees to their organisations, oe frames employees’ perception for their organisations in functional ways that provide employees with purpose and direction to their jobs […] Thus, OE is informative in explaining why perceived CSR is likely to result in positive job behaviour.”

Overall, the studies showed that perceived CSR is likely to result in positive job behaviour, meaning lower turnover. “Our findings contribute to the CSR literature by showing that perceived CSR can strengthen employee embeddedness, which in turn lowers turnover behaviour,” say the authors. “That is, perceived CSR is a noteworthy antecedent of employee turnover.”

the study and its outcomes offer a valuable resource to companies seeking to reap the maximum benefits from their well thought-out CSR activities. By understanding the impact of their CSR activities on employees, the firm can ensure, firstly, that employees are aware that these activities take place. Ensuring employee perception of CSR activities will strengthen employees’ bond with the company and can be another way to help reduce turnover levels, as well as improving the performance and selection of the company’s CSR activities themselves, all of which can lead to better results for the company.

By its focus on doing good for the world, CSR brings benefits in and of itself. Armed with the knowledge of the additional benefits that CSR activities can bring, companies now have more incentives to launch or expand their CSR activities.

EMBA-Global Asia ranked among the top in the world

The EMBA-Global Asia programme, HKU Business School’s dynamic partnership with the London Business school and Columbia Business school, has been named fourth globally in the annual Financial Times Executive MBA ranking. The programme has now been ranked among the top four in the world for three consecutive years.

The league table ranks the top 100 Executive MBA programmes in the world. the ranking takes into account a combination of 16 metrics, and is based on an alumni survey with various measures, including salary on graduation, career progression, how the programme has lived up to expectations, and the percentage salary increase three years after graduation.

HKU Business School’s EMBA-Global Asia programme scored strongly on the metric of salary increment, with an average salary received by graduates reaching US$338,725 per annum,

representing a growth of 98 percent. The Programme’s appeal was also boosted by graduates’ career progress, which jumped to third place, and international course experience, which further improved to second place from the fifth in 2018.

The grandmaster: Professor Yuk-fai Fong

Veteran scholar Professor Fong has been a fixture in academia for two decades, and has accumulated consulting experience for multiple corporations. Yet Professor Fong began as a physics major,

eventually discovering his calling through an economics elective course that enlightened him to his true interests. He found the systematic and formal methodology of economics fascinating and changed his major to study the field. “You can say that I am an accidental economist,” he says with a laugh.

Professor Fong has enjoyed his research journey, with some projects taking years to finish. He believes an advantage of being a scholar is that you‘re in control of what you research – he strongly encourages students that are passionate about their discipline to take this academic path.

Teaching as a privileged occupationProfessor Fong’s dedication to pedagogy grew during his teaching years in a renowned Us business school. nurtured in a culture that values teaching and research, academia has been a ‘privilege’ for him and he strives to positively influence students, being recognised with multiple awards in the process.

Interdisciplinary knowledge is keyDuring his early years, Professor Fong was one of the first local economists to research on how exogenous changes in extra household environmental factors affect independent and spousal leisure between couples. It is an example of his belief in interdisciplinary intellectual exchange and cross-disciplinary

knowledge through different methodologies. He encourages students to learn more about technology and analytics, while focusing on business-related applications. He also believes that one should learn more about machine learning and AI.

Professor Fong also emphasises the importance of learning from the past while seeking future opportunities. He highly recommends students study history, and stresses that possessing rich cultural knowledge is helpful for networking with people from all walks of life and opening new doors to career, investment or even business opportunities.

Focus on corporate social responsibility When sharing his recent research, Professor Fong highlighted recent studies on whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives can enhance a firms’ reputation. While firms need to build a reputation for their product quality, some customers genuinely care whether the firm is being socially responsible. He is interested in whether these two actions are complementary to each other and if the analysis is different based on the kinds of CSR initiates adopted by firms. He is also conducting research on fintech lending, with the aim of studying the impact lenders can bring to competition among traditional financial institutions.

The way forwardthe Faculty is growing rapidly, and HKU has always been an important place for intellectuals, experts and scholars. Professor Fong looks forward to adding to the creative knowledge pool for the foreseeable future.

Marketing makes sense with Dr. Mengzhou Zhuang

He is more than just a scholar specialising in pricing strategies and machine learning - Dr. Zhuang is an energetic individual keen on pedagogy.

The family businessAs Dr. Zhuang’s parents are marketing professors, he accompanied them from a young age during their research. Although Dr. Zhuang eventually followed in his parents’ footsteps, he rebelled and chose electronics engineering as his undergraduate major. However, marketing has always caught his eye.

For aspiring students, Dr. Zhuang has this advice:

First, think twice. Being a professor is gruelling. You have to work 24/7 and research on unexplored knowledge. one must be very passionate about the discipline before making the decision. second, never look back. the path is not easy and letting yourself be consumed by your research is key to running the gauntlet. third, it´s ok to give up. Life is all about making choices. to limit one’s option is unwise.

Interdisciplinary is the key to excelDr. Zhuang says persuading without evidence has become an endemic among business students. In a world that is increasingly digitalised, effective marketing strategies must be supported by concrete and meaningful data. therefore, marketing students must work hard on their numerical reasoning skills.

Multi-channel pricing is a heated topicDr. Zhuang is currently researching price integration. He discovered that some companies charge different prices across different sales channels. In mainland China, after a price integration policy was introduced in 2013, Dr. Zhuang observed that sales prices increased and consumers will have three different reactions.

Price-sensitive consumers leave immediately after the price increase, but will return when the price drops. Die-hard consumers are not affected as they value the shopping experiences. Nonetheless, the majority of consumers will eventually resume shopping, as the price integration reduces their time spent searching across platforms. Dr. Zhuang believes that his findings can help retailers to have a clearer picture about the consumers psyche. What makes a good advertisement? Dr. Zhuang believes that a good ad strikes a balance between attractiveness and effectiveness. For instance, thai ads are renowned for their immersive viewing experience, but the story may drag consumers’ focus away from the product. However, an ad focusing solely on functionalities may be boring to watch. An ad should always be designed according to the preferences of its target consumers, regardless of the platform. The way forward Before joining HKU, Dr. Zhuang taught in the US and he enjoyed the classroom dynamics there. Now teaching introductory courses at HKU, he believes that an informal classroom environment facilitates the teacher-student bond and encourages knowledge sharing.

Students shine in HKSI Institute Scholarship Programme 2019

Four FBe undergraduate students took part in the Hong Kong securities and Investment Institute scholarship Programme 2019 and were awarded

Champion, first Runner-up, third Runner-up and Finalist.

since its launch in 2004, the programme has provided university students with an avenue to widen their horizons and advance their career development in the financial industry.

Participating students were required to write a 1000 word essay on the topic “How can your career development contribute to uphold Hong Kong’s status of international financial centre?”. Selected finalists will be teamed up to work on a research project and presentation at the Outreach Committee. Awardees will be offered cash prizes and job shadowing opportunities at renowned companies including CBH Asia and Morgan stanley.

Tax championship a walk in the park for FBE students

Ateam of four FBE students won the Merit Award at the 2019 Deloitte tax Championship. the team entered the national Contest under the theme “Leading to success: be bold, be creative” in

Chengdu from 25 to 27 October 2019. Participating students in the competition were from top universities in Greater China and they exchanged knowledge and insights on tax and business, particularly on international tax and outbound M&A activities this year.

the Deloitte tax Championship is an international competition promoting education, research and innovation in taxation and supports an array of national and local programmes across Greater China. It also acts as a platform for university students to apply their tax knowledge and receive professional tax training.

Student innovators win HSBC case competition

HKU Faculty of Business and economics undergraduate students won top prizes at the HsBC Financial Dialogue series 2019 – Financial Innovation Case study.

The f inal presentation was held on 17 August 2019. Participants were asked to develop innovative tech solutions, with a focus on customer experience, wealth management risk and security. Demonstrating both thorough analysis and proposal, students developed critical thinking skills and unleashed their creativity.

Deep insights and eye openers at Asia Pacific Study Tour

The Faculty organises the Asia Pacific Study Tour exclusively for all BBA(IBGM) freshmen during the summer break of every academic year. through a series of company visits and guests talks, the study

tour offers an insightful experience, allowing students to get a taste of how a developed economy continues to evolve from its traditional businesses to a new model.

In June 2019, IBGM freshmen travelled to singapore to explore the business landscape and the differences between Hong Kong and the Lion City as locations for doing business. they visited rising start-ups, traditional family businesses and multinational corporations, and utilised what they had learnt in their final case competition.

the students had an enriching time on the study tour, gaining first-hand knowledge from industry leaders and interacting with high-calibre individuals, expanding their personal connections.

Students visited Google’s Asia-Pacific headquarter in Singapore.

It was a truly enriching experience. We received the opportunity to visit some of the biggest multinational corporations such as

Google and Uber.

A Swiss adventure

First private equity experience at Neuberger Berman

In 2019, HKU Business school established a two-year partnership with Neuberger Berman Asia Limited (NB) to launch a Private Equity Internship Programme exclusively for FBe students.

The Programme aims to help FBE students gain exposure to the world of finance and private equity. Early experience is important for cultivating the next generation of private equity professionals in Hong Kong and offering invaluable career development.

Last september, a session was held at HKU to introduce the Internship Programme, attracting over 100 participants. More than 170 applications were eventually received.

through rigorous selection conducted by both FBe and nB, four applicants were shortlisted and offered semester-long internship opportunities on a rotational basis. since october 2019, two students have already started their internships, and have been engaged in relevant training programmes, meetings and firm wide presentations at NB.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Switzerland is the most innovative country in the world in 2019. As such, the delegation visited Swiss Fintech Innovation Lab (SFIL) at the University of Zurich where they were inspired by the concerted effort of businesses, academics, and regulators promoting blockchain technology, while going to trust square in downtown Zurich – the world’s largest blockchain hub.

Finally, they went to RebecoSAM, an industry leader in the niche area of esG investing. they were able to gain an in-depth understanding of the rationales and benefits of esG investing, and compiling esG indices worldwide.

The NB internship has been a rewarding experience as it exposes me to private equity deals, the due diligence

process, and preparation of investment memos. I learned so much invaluable information with advice

from helpful and kind colleagues.

Red Cross experience opens new perspectives

FBe graduate nicholas Chu is mid-way through a one-year traineeship at the Geneva headquarters of the International Committee of the Red

Cross (ICRC), working on its mission to help victims of armed conflict and violence.

A traineeship that helps build a better world“this is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he says. “Being with the ICRC fits my aims of contributing to a worthwhile cause with my skills in business and law,” says 23-year-old nicholas.

An associate in the office of the Economic Adviser in the Department of International Law and Policy, Nicholas assists ICRC’s engagement with the private sector and international organisations such as the World economic Forum.

The job sees him create tools for businesses in complex security environments, working with the likes of Chinese companies in Africa, preparing briefs on sustainable business and supporting ICRC’s Beijing office in its engagement with Chinese institutions. “ICRC is making sure Chinese companies play a more significant role. I have been able to influence business behaviour in some of the most vulnerable places on earth,

so that was indeed very rewarding,” he says. “At ICRC, there are not many colleagues from Asia, especially East Asia. I’m glad to be able to introduce colleagues to issues in Asia or Hong Kong as well,” he adds.

International networking is keynicholas has made valuable connections in Geneva, which he describes as a “truly international city”, and attends pot-luck dinners where he meets people from all around the world. nicholas, who has a Chinese father and Malaysian mother, is already fluent in Cantonese, Mandar in , teochew, engl ish , French and Esperanto, and is now studying Arabic at the ICRC.

New horizons are herethe traineeship has opened nicholas’ eyes to the breadth of the ICRC’s operations, helping guide his career. He plans to study for a master’s degree in international affairs or diplomacy, and would like to pursue a career relating to how MnCs can influence humanitarian policy decisions. “stay humble, be receptive to new ideas. Defend your ground, but be prepared to make concessions,” he advises. “the more you learn about international affairs, the more you learn how we can improve our society,” he adds.

A life-changing year at Yale

Rewarding academic excellence for students globally, the Yale Visiting International student Programme (Y-VISP) invites high-flying scholars from partner institutions to study. the students become ful ly integrated members of the community by taking courses alongside their Yale classmates, participating in extracurricular organisations and events, and living in residential colleges.

Following this esteemed path in 2018-19 was BBA (Information Systems) student Grayson Ho Yik Chung, who participated with the support of a HsBC overseas scholarship. It was an experience that Grayson is unlikely to forget soon: “Y-VISP brings together a group of committed and ambitious students to become life-long friends. thanks to HKU, this programme has greatly enriched my undergraduate experience,” Grayson said.

During his life-changing year at Yale, Grayson maximised his time by taking unique courses and joining extracurricular activities at computer science advocate group Code Haven, the frisbee team and poker club. He also took part in an internship during the summer break to work for a food technology start-up in Chicago.

Tales of a Hong Kong business legend at HKU

Professor Chen also invited fellow CEOs to supplement the course with their own experiences including Diana CESAR, HSBC Hong Kong CEO and Christine IP, CEO of United Overseas Bank (UOB) Greater China. They presented and helped judge the students’ final presentations, by asking tough questions and providing valuable advice and feedback.

A master of change managementThroughout his eminent career, the hallmark of Professor Chen’s leadership has been his ability to implement change, a notoriously difficult feat to accomplish and to master even as a seasoned leader. He speaks honestly about the challenge, which he calls a lonely one, revealing that while many people might not be able to imagine the road ahead, eventually the “pride of knowing that you did something right will far exceed the fact that other people couldn’t understand what you were putting in motion,” says Professor Chen.

Professor Chen highlights change management issues with his “Six Attributes Model”. The paradigm looks at critical issues such as understanding the dominant coalitions in companies; and the importance of taking time when reforming to get to the root cause of organisational malaise.

Professor Chen has proven himself to be a Hong Kong legend. For the fortunate students in his class, this extraordinary experience is sure to be a highlight of their MBA journey.

Former CEO and current HKU professor Philip Chen has met his fair share of challenges throughout a 40-year career at Cathay Pacific Airways, Swire Pacific and Hang Lung Group. His new experiential

MBA elective class “Insights and Lessons – Reflections of a Ceo” is notable for use of story-telling to illustrate his points. “Philip Chen's CEO class was one of the most memorable courses I've ever taken. It was fascinating to go through cases and hear management stories”, says student Chris Joonseop Kim.

Through these insights and anecdotes from Professor Chen’s career, students have the chance to apply the practical skills to real issues such as the importance of winning hearts and minds in managing change; developing and employing critical communications skills; and the pros and cons of different management styles.

Learning by doingOver the years, Professor Chen has weathered more than a few crises. to underscore the difficulty of navigating through challenging times, and the importance of a solid crisis preparation plan, he developed a crisis management drill this fall in which students were placed in unfamiliar situations and tasked to react to them in real time, all while being videotaped by a professional film crew.
