STEM CURRICULUM

ScienceTechnologyEngineeringMath

Student Textbook Chapters Aligned to Course Materials

Page 23: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8

SCIENCE

Systematic knowledge of the physical world, gained through observation and experimentation

Applied Physics Physics of Motion Newton’s Laws of Motion Physics of Work Simple Machines

Page 24: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8

Technology

Takes place when people use their knowledge to extend their abilities, satisfy needs and wants, and solve problems.Examples:

How can we go to the Moon? How can we make an Earthquake proof building? How can we design and build a faster dragster?

Page 25: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8
Page 26: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8

EngineeringEngineer:

A person who uses his or her knowledge of Science, Technology, Math and Communication to solve technical design problems.

Example: Design a structure that can withstand the forces of an

earthquake. Design and build a CO2 Race Car that will travel the

distance of the track as fast as possible.

Page 27: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8
Page 28: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8

Mathematics

The systematic treatment of magnitude, relationships between figures and forms, and relations between quantities expressed symbolically

Examples: Force = mass x acceleration or F=m x aWork = force x distance or W=f x dSpeed = distance/time or S=d/t

Page 29: Innovation & Design STEM in Grades 3-8

Project Example- CO2 Race Car

1. Scientific principles behind project2. Math calculations 3. Engineering - designing an

aerodynamic race car using the scientific principals that were learned

4. Students do a build out using simple tools and balsa wood as a materials
