ORDER!CHECKLINE II HELPS TO MAKE THE PALACE OF WESTMINSTER A SAFER PLACE TO WORK

BACK IN 2003 Roger Townsend, Checkmate’s Installations Director conducted a survey of the Palace of Westminster roof in conjunction with Purcell, Miller, Tritton Architects. Our brief was to provide a complete

design solution of safe access and working to enable staff carrying out maintenance tasks to move from one roof to the next whilst staying attached to a safety line. All without penetrating the roof tiles. In 2010 we won the contract to install Checkline II – our single wire lifeline – onto part of the building known as ‘Speakers Court’ and formed part of the

works by specialist contractors Shepley

Engineers Ltd who dismantled the roof, repaired the steel frame and rebuilt it.In cooperation with the architects, Checkmate designed stairways for the roof slopes incorporating Checkline II continuous life lines and special cantilever style frames to support the GRP walkways and Checkline II to all box gutters. The Parliamentary Works Services Directorate were so impressed with Checkline II’s design and incredible functionality that the product has been

specifi ed for Phase II of the roof works expected to commence in 2012.Checkline II is currently being installed at 7 Old Palace Yard – for the Commercial Services Directorate,

House of Commons.

Hover Story

Our Flexible FriendUSHPAL THIND joined Checkmate Flexible Engineering in 2008 as project engineer. Since then, he has gained valuable experience in fl exible product design and manufacture and has played a pivotal role in driving the fl exible engineering team forward.

Ushpal’s promotion to industrial products manager is a refl ection of the success of the peristaltic hose business. Thanks to his hard work and determination, Checkmate now supply 30% of the North American market with sales tripling since 2008.

But it doesn’t end there. Ushpal also brings his extensive skill set to the Anaconda team and works on all aspects of design, manufacture and testing of the project.

Testing 1 2 3!IT’S NO secret that there have been many long-standing issues concerning safety in the lifting industry. In April 2011, we decided to begin to address some of these issues by conducting a number of rigorous tests on our heavy lifting webslings.

The tests involved the compatibility of textile slings when connected to component hardware, the effect of adding multiple eyes to textile slings and the overall design of heavy lifting webslings.

The subsequent reports that came from the tests were submitted to LEEA with the sole aim of improving the safety of products across the lifting industry.

Since then, LEEA has commissioned us to carry out

further tests enabling the organisational

body to put the appropriate

recommen-dations in

place.

You can see all the results on our website.

A Royal Appointment

Checkmate collect third Queen’s Award

IN JULY THIS YEAR, CHECKMATE’S MANAGING DIRECTOR

OLIVER AUSTON AND DESIGN ENGINEER DUNCAN BARRIER

WERE INVITED TO A RECEPTION HOSTED BY HER MAJESTY

THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF YORK IN RECOGNITION OF

THE COMPANY’S LATEST AWARD.

THE ACCOLADE was this time

awarded to Checkmate for

its Xcalibre fall arrest block

- a device that has been

proven to save lives

among employees

who work at height.

Speaking about

Xcalibre, Auston said

“We passionately

believe that

innovation

is the key to

business success,

and Xcalibre

embodies that,

allowing us to

sell across the

UK and the world

against cheaper, foreign-made

alternatives. Quite simply, it’s the best

at saving lives and preventing injury.”

Checkmate’s patented technology,

including the SBM (Sealed Brake

Module, inset above right) and injection

moulded one-piece drum,

were both inspired by the

automotive industry, and use

the very latest aerospace

materials and automated

manufacturing techniques.

These unique features allow

the device to function in

more arduous environments,

and reduces both the weight

and the manufacturing costs.

Anaconda.An update.

IT’S BEEN A BUSY FEW MONTHS FOR CHECKMATE SEAENERGY.

HAVING WON support from

Carbon Trust back in 2009,

the team has been locked in

talks with potential investors

in an attempt to raise the

necessary funds to take the

project to the next stage.

To aid this process, Brewin

Dolphin was appointed

financial advisor in January

with the aim of raising a

pre-float of £6m to build

the biggest rubber tube

ever made. This comes after

an independent review by

international consulting

engineers Black & Veatch

who stated that Anaconda

will indeed be one of the

most cost-effective ways

of converting wave energy

into useable energy.

Des Crampton, chief

executive at Checkmate

Seaenergy hopes that

the pre-float budget will

allow the team to create

a full-size device.

“We are working

with Brewin Dolphin

to help achieve full

commercialisation of the

Anaconda Wave Energy

Converter”, explains

Crampton. “We believe

Anaconda will offer a cost-

effective means to capture

the enormous amount of

energy available globally

in offshore waters and can

play an important part in

achieving the UK’s climate

change target of at least

15 per cent of energy

generation to come from

renewable sources by 2020.”

Anaconda’s unique ability

to harness wave energy

has global benefits with

potential sites identified

in the UK, Europe, Canada,

United States, Australia,

New Zealand, South Africa

and South America.

The Department of

Energy and Climate Change

in Whitehall has also

shown a lot of interest

and enthusiasm in the

project. The Minister of

State underscored the

Coalition Government’s

position to support, in a

constructive and proactive

fashion, the fledgling marine

renewables industry and

he noted that, assisted by

The Carbon Trust, very

promising results had been

achieved demonstrating

that Anaconda has

serious potential to

drive down the cost of

energy in the sector.

CHECKMATE FLEXIBLE Engineering has now produced more than 30,000 dunnage bags for heavy duty cargo protection. We wanted the products to be the ‘salesman’ and the van to

be a tool to enable a mobile showroom and demonstration

fully stocked product portfolio giving potential users the ability

to see, touch and test our equipment prior to a sale.
