Founded in 1878, Telecom ParisTech is one of France’s top graduate engineering schools and the leading French school in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). At Telecom ParisTech we prepare students to meet the challenges of the information society, to manage complexity, to innovate and to work in a multicultural environment.

French ʺGrandes EcolesʺGeared towards economic stakeholders, Telecom ParisTech is a public ̋ Grande Ecoleʺ

of Engineering under the authority of the French Ministry for Industry. Two main types of Higher Education institutions coexist in France: Universities and ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ.

Small to medium size institutions, the ̋ Grandes Ecolesʺ train engineers - ̋ Grandes Ecolesʺ of Engineering - and business executives -ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ of Business-.

The French ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ of Engineering are accredited higher education institutions that are highly selective, provide high quality education and maintain close links with Industry. They have a great ratio between

teaching and administrative staff on one side, and students on the other side.

French ʺDiplôme d’ingénieurʺʺGrandes Ecolesʺ of Engineering deliver the ʺDiplôme d’ingénieurʺ, a highly prestigious degree, which is equivalent to a grade of Master of Science in Engineering. After passing a highly selective entry examination, students can benefit from a high quality curriculum, which brings together scientific and theoretical teaching with an in-depth coverage of social, cultural, economic and management issues. Internships with industry or research laboratories are a mandatory part of the curriculum. Our graduates are highly trained and are recruited for key positions in industry and business.

An engineering degree is granted after a 5-year overall period of study, generally structured as follows: two first years of intensive “Classes préparatoires” outside the ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ (intensive science courses, mostly in mathematics and physics) which lead to competitive examinations for entrance into ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ. three final years of study in the ʺGrandes Ecolesʺ which lead to the delivery of the ʺDiplôme d’ingénieurʺ. The 1st

of these three years provides a basis of fundamental core courses, like mathematics, physics and economic and social sciences. The last two years allow students to choose study tracks in specific engineering fields.

Besides the competitive examinations, alternative admission procedures are available for students who already have a higher education degree or are currently pursuing one within an institution from France or abroad.

The leading Engineering School in ICT in France The word "Telecommunications" was invented here (in 1904)ʺGrande Ecoleʺ of Engineering under the authority of the French Ministry for Industry

Research and Innovation

Telecom ParisTech’s research activities cover both the fundamental aspects of top-quality upstream research and applied research carried out in close collaboration with the socio-economic sector. Research at Telecom ParisTech is rated as Excellent (A+) and is internationally renowned. The professors regularly receive prestigious awards: CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) Medals; Academy of Sciences awards; IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) prizes and recognitions, Google Awards, etc.

Bolstered by the skills of its 350 PhD students, linked to the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), and the preferred partner of the key players in the telecommunications area, Telecom ParisTech cooperates with both academic and industrial partners in the framework of bilateral agreements and research programmes at the national level (French National Research Agency [ANR], competitive clusters) and European level (Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development).

Research finds its most useful expression when its results impact on economic and social realities. Teaching and research Chairs are always supported by one or more companies and are regularly created by means of patronage. Within their specific fields, these chairs develop research activities, new training courses and joint events - seminars, workshops and conferences. They create links between the corporate sector and the School, thus stimulating innovation.

Joint Research Centers are created and managed in partnership with the business world. They bring together Telecom ParisTech, one or more companies, and sometimes other graduate schools and research organizations, around a specific research topic (for example, the center created with EDF in 2007: BiLab: Business Intelligence for industrial applications).

Telecom ParisTech has a strong track record of obtaining competitive external funding, 30% of its budget comes from industrial contracts - proof of the excellent links the School has with industry.

Telecom ParisTech incorporates the socio-economic impacts of its research into its strategic priorities. Their success is measured by the practical integration of the results into products and services.Telecom ParisTech is the French leader amongst graduate schools of Engineering and universities in terms of innovation and technology transfer. The School supports the creation of innovative businesses by its students and graduates, immediately after graduation or later during the course of their career. Within the curricula, the school raises students’ awareness towards business creation. The school also provides its graduates with access to its incubator helping them to turn their ideas into economically sustainable businesses.

With 180 sustainable companies started since year 1999 and more than 45 hosted at any given time on its two sites (Paris and Sophia Antipolis), Telecom ParisTech’s incubator ranks 1st among incubators hosted by French graduate engineering schools. These start-ups represent aggregated earnings of 78 M€ and 2 000 jobs. Telecom ParisTech prioritizes the protection and promotion of its inventions. The current portfolio includes 100 patents. An average of 12 patents is filed in every year by Telecom ParisTech researchers. 3 new start-ups are launched every month.

International Relations

Highly international: Internationalization is since a long time a priority for Telecom ParisTech. Today, almost 50% of our students are international, coming from more than 50 different countries.

2 campuses, 2 languages of teaching: The School welcomes the students on two campuses: the Paris campus where courses are mainly taught in French and the Sophia Antipolis EURECOM campus where courses are entirely taught in English.

100 partner institutions around the world: Telecom ParisTech has developed partnerships with about 100 higher education institutions worldwide, taking part in international networks of excellence. 35 double-degrees are established with countries in North and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe.

Many opportunities to study and intern abroad: Students are highly encouraged to acquire an international experience. They have numerous occasions to intern or study abroad:

during their personal development training between their first and second year at the School during their mandatory internship in their third year of study during their third year when they can undertake a degree or non-degree programme.

Students can also take part in short exchanges within the Athens network formed by major European technical universities or institutions. 30 hours of scientific courses are provided by host institutions at each of the two sessions organized during the 3rd week in November and March. This training activity is a part of the European Socrates/Erasmus programme.

International relations built up within prestigious academic and scientific networks: An important part of Telecom ParisTech’s international relations strategy and activities are conceived and developed within the three clusters of excellence to which the School belongs to: Institut Mines-Telecom, ParisTech and Paris Saclay. Joint recruitment activities are organized for several years in Brazil, China, India and Russia.

Close link to the international strategies of the corporate world: The internationalization process of the School is thought up together with representatives from the corporate world in order to prepare students to meet the challenges of today’s working environment.

Exporting French-way of teaching and research - ParisTech Shanghai JiaoTong: Together with three other Schools from the ParisTech cluster and the University of Jiao Tong in Shanghai, Telecom ParisTech contributed to the establishment of ParisTech-Shanghai JiaoTong Institute of Engineering in 2012. Modelled on France’s top engineering Schools, this Institute based in Shanghai offers students outstanding courses with an international scope taught in three languages (French, Chinese and English), and a study period or internship in France. Telecom ParisTech manages the Information and Communication Technologies study track. The Institute currently welcomes classes of 100 Chinese students and gradually opens its doors to international students selected through an international recruitment process.
